    i have a 2006 grizzly 660. i put some hardware cloth 1/4 inch sq. to prevent rodents from getting into the clutch breather tube, it is my experience that they love to build nests under the front top cover. a good idea every spring to remove it for inspection as they also will chew on the wire harness, i had to replace mine before i new this was a problem, this is a great video. thanks

    Thank you for all your videos ! You are giving a great help and confidence on maintaining our bikes ourselves. I did watch this video and the one about wet clutch maintenant many times. My one way bearing was toast, and I decided to give it a try. In 4 hours, I actually did the job, and my engine brake is back now. I'm really proud as I'm no mechanic at all.
    This is mainly thank to you, and your awesome videos. I basically reproduced what you did, and it went very well :) So, thank you, my 660 now has engine brake again, and I did it myself :P
    I would not have had the confidence to do it without all your maintenance video. Thanks again.

    well a blown water pump seal would put water into your engine oil, increase the pressure inside your crank causing the oil to "puke" back out your breather tube and into your air box.. so i would start there. There is a video i did on a water pump seal change for a rhino in my other videos. Thanks for the view.

  • @ruyguy8888
    @ruyguy8888  Před 11 lety

    Yes i had heard of the greasless weight assembly. The sliders have a poly type material inserted to use instead of grease. Your pilot jet only controls idle. As soon as your slide moves, the needle and main will take over. My suggestion would first try to raise the needle out of the main first. It sounds like there is not a sufficient amount of fuel passing by it at that point to allow smooth throttle operation. To confirm this, at the point where it starts to bog, slowly move the choke slide.

    Thanks for this vid! Getting ready to put a Dalton clutch kit onto my '07 Grizzly and this is the best explanation yet. Will be first time behind the clutch cover so will be an adventure. Go from 26" ITP Mudlite XLs to Tatou 4S tracks in winter. Any wisdom to offer on clutch kit configuration? They recommend combining the weights provided for 26-27" tires and use stock secondary spring but wouldn't it be best for performance with tracks in our 6 month Canadian winters to go all the way with their blue spring on the secondary as well? Maybe even use all lighter weights instead of combo?

  • @ruyguy8888
    @ruyguy8888  Před 11 lety

    Yamaha does not use a conventional belt system. they use the best in my opinion. there is no need for shims anywhere on the primary or secondary clutching system, Yamaha uses very low maintenance belt drive systems. The only modifications you might need to do to a Yamaha belt system would be a clutch kit on tires over the 27" size. and Bruces 650 is holding up very well. Thanks for watching.

  • @ruyguy8888
    @ruyguy8888  Před 9 lety

    Landy Burkland The clutch cover consists of four 10mm bolts, Two up top, two down below. There are metal guides that must be in place before reassembly. Once removed, pull straight away from the clutch. Then you are done.

  • @ruyguy8888
    @ruyguy8888  Před 10 lety

    theres a fairly simple way of testing to see if your head gasket is toast. remove the rad cap and spark plug. take a skinny wine cork .. or cut one.. and drill a hole through it, place the tip of your air gun through it. place your piston at TDC (Top Dead Center) as if you where going to adjust valves. Blow compressed air down your spark plug hole sealing it off as best you can. If your coolant bubbles or you can hear air escaping through your open rad, you have a blown head gasket.

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před 2 lety

      If its consistent while idling id say your primary sliders might be starting to seize up. If it's on and off with RPMS you may have a secondary spring broken. Assuming you have not felt performance loss, it could also be just the small carrier bearing in the primary support basket worn.
      Could also be your belt starting to de-laminate
      Hard to tell really without seeing or hearing it. Id suggest to just go ahead and pull the clutch/belt cover off and start looking around for abnormalities

      @ruyguy8888  Před 8 lety +1

      Hello there, thank you for commenting.
      In stock form my Grizzly 660 did 115km/h . I have bigger tires and a Dalton Clutch kit installed and the top speed was reduced to around 100km/h
      If you are only getting around 40mph, i would first take a look at your belt width and wear, make sure it falls within the specifications from Yamaha.
      Secondly what may be happening is the grease inside your primary may have mixed with dust.dirt over time and is not causing the primary to close up far enough and bottom out.
      I would start with a good clutch cleaning, and belt inspection. That should be done as part of your regular maintenance.
      Cheers: - Ruyguy8888

    Do you have all your vent-lines snorkeled? especially the one that comes off the carburetor? When is the last time you dissasembled the gas cap breathing vent? are you sucking in water through that. many of them splash water up into the gas tank vent line and it will Vapor lock your bike. Try those things first and get back to me.

My 1999 grizzly I got for cheap because the clutch was slipping and I thought how hard can this be? Your videos helped. I do have a few issues. First one being. The bushing the primary rides on. How does that come off? Mine seems to be seized on there or a locking pin is holding it in. I'm not sure. It was late. I was 3 beers into it I just gave up. I can't get that back sheeve off without that bushing. I wondered if it needed a special puller or something.

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před 10 lety

      If you have a washer, more than likely you have bought the bikle second hand and that is a cheap modification that the previous owner has done to increase low end tourqe. A washer between the two sheaves will allow the belt to rid lower in the carriage causing a gear ratio change.

    Hi there ! I just bought a 02 660 like yours. 3800 miles. Supposed to have been well maintained. The seller told me sometimes I’d need to rock it into L Ram it today for first time to plow and it did good but noticed it has a hard time getting into L. Kind of have to try and get it there 2-3 times. Sometimes it goes first time. Then a few times going into reverse it got weird and once or twice made a grinding noise after going into R and then went away fairly quickly. Seems like it has a hard time getting shifted all around when plowing back and forth etc. Any ideas ? He told me just need to change oil and coolant and that he did the diffs. I asked about transmission and said nothing to maintenance. Im new to 4wheelers. Watching you bud now !

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před rokem

      First thing to try is a shift linkage adjustment from your shifter to the transmission . Check for excess wear on the small ball joints that go into the shift arms on both the shifter side and transmission side.
      If it still is very hard to shift after that point, you may have a bent shift fork inside the transmission from the previous owner and it will require extensive work to correct.

      @ruyguy8888  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks first off for the sub.
      I've learned from working on several Ultramatic clutches that there really is no substitute for the Yamalube ultramatic grease.
      It's the only OEM recommended grease in the service manual but there is a reason. 1st is the high temp resistance. It wont sling inside your belt casing causing slippage and premature belt wear.
      2nd is the water resistance. Even high cost lubes like lucas red n tacky absorbs some water/moisture and can turn white
      3rd is it's not a clay based grease. Most general purpose greases will have some sort of organic material and will harden over its lifetime causing plugging issues in grease passages and causing poor surface to surface low resistance. Yamalube Ultramatic grease is a synthetic base and wont do that.
      I know it sucks to pay for OEM grease from the dealer, but do it once and forget about it till the next belt or clutch service. Then you ill still have some leftover for the next round or to.

    Maybe you can help with my problem. I installed a new carb. (Old one was junk) Set valve clearance. Put a new plug in. I have gas blowing into the airbox anytime the engine is running. It gets worse when you rev it up and it loses power and bogs down then back fires. I turned the air/fuel mix all the way to lean and even adjusted the carb needle all the way down. Still no help. The funny thing is when in neutral it idles and revs up great, but has gas blowing into the airbox. Someone said the intake valve is stuck or bent and that's why fuel is blowing back through the carb. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. 2005 Yamaha Bruin 350. Thanks!

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před 8 lety

      +RedEyeReviewer First off is the gas blowing into the air box coming from the crank breather tube? if so STOP RUNNING THE BIKE, you may be getting a gas/oil mixture from an overfull crank full of fuel.
      Most likely that is being caused by a faulty fuel valve stop leading into the carb's bowl. That would cause fuel to constantly pour into the carb, into the cylinder and down inside of your crank.
      If you have a stuck or bent valve, loss of compression would occur and your engine will not run.
      Check your oil first, dont just check the dipstick, pull a sample out of the crank at the oil drain plug. If it is runny, milky or smells like fuel... you may have a lot of work ahead of you to clean that engine out and get your new carb working correctly.

    • @RedEyeReviewer
      @RedEyeReviewer Před 8 lety

      +ruyguy8888 Nothing is coming out of the crank breather tube, just from the carb itself into the airbox. Yes, the oil does smell a little like gas.

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před 8 lety

      +RedEyeReviewer Filling the airbox with fuel will do the same effect as filling the cylinder head. You may be getting fuel down inside your crank via the crank breather tube.
      Im going to suggest you pull the bottom end of the car bowl off and check the condition of the float needle.
      if you smell any sort of gas in your engines oil, you will run the risk of engine destruction due to proper lack of lubrication. Buy about 3 oil filters and some really cheap 10w30 or 10w40 (or whatever is on sale) and do a few oil changes to the ATV once you determine that your gas problem is resolved.

    I see you greased the center roller that goes into the primary, does the belt not sit on that? I did not see you grease the rollers, is the primary you are working on stock? My shop manual says grease the weights?

    • @ruyguy8888
      @ruyguy8888  Před 8 lety

      +Rhino Rider I am working on an all-stock clutch yes. It I had placed a small skiff of grease around the outside of the rollers before placing them in there. Over greasing the slides and rollers have a very negative effect on the way the rollers throw the sheave out. It will act sluggish and you may get some residual grease fly out from the center of the pressure plate. All that required is a small amount .
      As far as that center roller goes, it slides into a set of rubber seals inside the center of the Sheave assembly, Your belt, unless abnormally worn, or you have a shim washer in place to spread the sheave for a lower gear ratio, shouldn't really contact the center shaft roller of the primary.
      These are just my methods of maintenance for this unit. Always consult your repair manual and follow instructions if you ave any doubt. Ill never claim to know more than a Yamaha research and development engineer, but with over 13,000kms doing the scheduled maintenance i plan out for my grizzly, the work speaks for itself.
