Hello Made in Abyss community! It's been a little while. Before chapter 53 comes out I wanted to get a video out to generate some discussion regarding the most complex character in the entire series Wazukyn. He is often lumped as the antagonist of this ark yet I have a hard time believing in that idea. This video is a small little discussion video where I will try to explain why I feel this way. This is not at all a persuasive piece but a video that simply contains some of my thoughts, and I felt like sharing them.
I would love to hear what you guys think in the comments below! Whether it be about Wazukyan, this entire ark (what you love about it, what you hate about it etc.) or anything really I'd love to hear it down below!

I honestly figured he hoped to find the Golden City but would be happy with whatever he found because the rest of his group was what brought him enough joy that it didn't matter. I figured the whole prophecy stuff was just him going mad from being so far down in the abyss for so long and still operated under compassion. I don't know how he figured out that Iryuumi's children cured the water monster problem, but the fact he did his best to not let it go to waste demonstrated that he still had some level of humanity left in him.

The prophecy was something he had mentioned before arriving in the abyss (with talk of sages and how the compass choose veko and how his revelations are never incorrect), my belief is that he likely did have somekind of premonition that he genuinely believed in and whether it was real or not we have no proof to confirm it or deny it, but the way everyone believes in Wazukyn hints that he does have something that nobody else has (the ability to make dreams a reality).

When I think of the Ganja corps and specially Wazukyan it reminds me of the story when the survivors of a crashed airplane had to eat the bodies of other people to survive or similar cases of canibalism where people got stuck in a blizzard, island, mountain, etc. Of course in those cases (as far as we know) it is quite different in a moral scale considering most of the bodies people ate were of people already dead but the instinct of self preservation and trying to save others in a critical situation is quite similar.

    • @TheMickellPickell
      @TheMickellPickell  Před 4 lety +34

Yeah exactly, we wouldn’t know what it’s like to be in that situation and we don’t know the absolute extent of our moral compass because we haven’t been tested to that point. I feel like when we are forced into situations as dire as that, morality falls second to keeping ourselves alive

      @alexandresobreiramartins9461 Před 3 lety +3

It's interesting that, unlike the famous Survivors of the Andes movie, the people who were against eating the bodies were OK with others doing so, as long as they didn't, and the people who ate the bodies were OK with the others allowing themselves to die from starvation, as long as they didn't force them to die too. Overall, exactly the opposite of the movie, everyone acted reasonably and rationally.
People, especially nowadays, ignore that morality is a tool for social survival (let's take any "imaginary friends in the sky" dispensing said morality out of the equation), not an absolute. Especially because said people treat morality as an absolute based on THEIR personal values and views, which they usually want to impose on everyone else.

At minimum, a knife's a must for survival, even if for some reason I got separated from my stuff/bag, the whistle is to call for help with less energy than screaming. this was a good idea for a video, there's a lot to the characters in this series, that along with the excellent setting and world building, which in turn is tied back to characters, by the abyss itself being a character of its own. just the fact that Tsukushi is able to explore much more natural feeling characters, which aren't tied down by the tropes they are born from, is really refreshing, especially in the context of anime/manga, which tends to have many one note characters rather than allowing them to be influenced by the setting like in MiA. He is definitely a detail oriented person considering how well the abyss flows together cohesively with all the little details of flora/fauna and even the geography, without falling apart. Honestly , the main plot of Riko following her mom/Reg finding his origin is mainly interesting only based on the mysteries established by the setting. now that we got to see the minds of a couple white whistles, its far more interesting to see what Lyza is up to, same with Reg, as we descend and learn more, it only becomes more interesting. I especially enjoy the way "antagonists" are handled. Rather than people who intentionally stand in the way of the protagonists, acting evil for the sake of the story, they feel like others who just happened to meet them, and their motives actually feel quite real. In the case of Bondrewd, he even mentions how similarly Riko thinks, and it again echoes through Wazukyan with the entire idea of "ends justify the means". it begs the question then, is that the attitude of those who can push through the abyss, or is that simply an effect of being in there for so long? is the "longing" the raiders and ganja feel a genuine feeling, one to discover the secrets the abyss holds, or is it simply a trap of the abyss, meant to draw more victims ever towards it? Is the title of Ozen not only based on her raw power, but also her steadfast mind, that refuses to be consumed by the longing that would lead her to the point of no return like many others? Those questions, along with the star compass true purpose, really gives you an eerie feeling regarding the true intentions of the abyss. But even still it never is outright stated, which i really enjoy, we will never know if Bondrewd was actually amoral before he started delving in the abyss, or if he too was simply dragged along by the whims of the abyss, losing his humanity in the process.
Anyways sorry for the essay, I'm not sure if its even coherent or gramatically correct, tldr, I just wanted to express how much i enjoy the way this story handles the characters and their motivations in tandem with the setting they live in, especially the antagonists.

en Brilliantly said!! The world building around characters and forcing them to change is an incredibly rare thing to see in story telling which is why I love Made in Abyss so much. It’s only been about 50+ chapters but you really get a sense that people have been here a LONG time and that the abyss genuinely has been changing people for years! And I’m so glad you mentioned the *human* element of these characters. Initially this video was about how Made In Abyss produces memorable characters because they aren’t transparent like most traditional Japanese anime/manga stories. It feels that our characters have felt loss and have felt change and are not forged by a “personality” but by genuine time and experience.
I also love the ambiguity of this franchise. It’s one of the only few abstract anime’s that give you 10 questions each ark and maybe 2 brief answers. Even if we don’t find out absolutely everything, I am content with not knowing...I usually want my stories tidied up, but not knowing for some reason feels just as exciting!

It's hard to think of anyone of the Ganja corps as villainous. They are all just desperately trying to survive in a hostile environment, knowing that they'll never escape from it. He is (like Bondrewd) a very goal-driven person and tries to make the best out of the situation, even if it takes some sacrifices. What he did to Irumyuui and her children is indeed questionable, but cannibalism does happen if people are desperate enough to stay alive.

Here is the big difference between Bondrewd and Wazukyan for me:
you actually SEE the people that benefit directly from Wazukyan's actions. It's easy enough to say that Bondrewd's discoveries helped people. What people? What discoveries? To me it seems the most useful of his discoveries, were kept to himself. Which is not even unusual for White Whistles, but (and obviously this DOES NOT happen) if you tell me Bondrewd sacrificed 100 kids to find a cure for the birthday death disease, I want to see that cure, and I want to see the list of names with photos. Be open about it, if it's such a worthy cause. Instead, it's hidden, because someone might not like the process.
But with Wazukyan, you know what he did, you know who it helped, specifically. And none of it was to benefit solely him. And for the sake of argument? If Wazukyan's prediction ability allowed him to know from the moment he met that kid, that he would sacrifice her to save his people? Even if he knew in detail what he would do, and still did it? Still better than Bondrewd, simply because you see every detail of the process, from the act itself to how it saved someone.
Even Riko feels a different way about these guys. What Bondrewd did was unforgivable. But Riko is able to understand Wazukyan, where she can't with Bondrewd (though I guess it's mainly because Prushka was a friend, not some person Riko only learned of after they ceased to exist as a person).

I feel it should also be noted that all of the newborn creatures Wazukyan has sacrificed (or... cooked, rather) were devoid of obvious intellect at that point and were going to die very soon anyway. Meaning it's hardly different from farmers eating chickens and their eggs. All animals are food, no matter how you look at it. The girl, which produced them, was the only victim, yet alternative was death without meaning, which... is way worse anyway (existing AND having an actual purpose totally beats unexisting). She willingly accepted every one of them inside of her. I honestly feel that destroying the village means nullifying her sacrifices. Killing own mother (even if it's just a giant village) to take revenge on those who granted her wish and made her existence meaningful... whom she cared about and guarded from an outside world... now that's an act of a true villain. Not like prior they had any better chances. They were all outcasts. They were called the "Suicide Squad" band of misfits. On the way to the island they lost all but their own vessels suffering from food losses and sickness. They were forced to stay in the 6th layer due to the curse. 6th had unholy abominations.
Then in it they adapted and a hope with a cave water source. They were surviving and starting to prosper. Then it all went to hell. The abyss took over.
People getting sick from the water being a live bacteria organism thing. He was their leader. He made the decision. P sure he even went insane like belaf just hid it very well.
Then eating the kids. They were destined to die already. If Irumui or whatever was left of her like mitty being just a response than thinking then she was lost already. He used every part of the kids so none went to waste.
The ending was probably the best as he knew they wouldn't survive too well as humans. So having a way to be rebuilt to better suit the environment he took it.
Putting veenma inside Irumui's head to keep Irumui calm and prevent her from destroying herself and them. All 100% justified.
The only thing he did wrong was the god complex of his. We all can judge from an outside view but put yourself in their shoes his specifically.
You got a group of thirsty starving and sick unwanted yourself too! You cannot go further down or you'll most likely die. Can't go back up same result. Can't explore well the area same result. Even if so no data so you're on your own. Water kills you faster. Then you get this problem solver via cannibalism. All you gotta do is swallow your morals and go through with it.
At that point death is stealing and taking the easy way out. Least he saw it through till the end. Ngl if i was there i'd probably relieve command to 2nd in line and turn off the lights forever. I'd probably go insane like belaf did when he saw what the soup was made out of.
He's not a protag or antag. Wazukyan is more of a surreal leader. Given with what he had he made do. Notice he never really gets mad or curses anyone or anything. He wants to establish a place for them all. He did but im p sure deep down he knew what was about to unfold.

Much like Bondrewd and other characters obsessed with their destiny, he is willing to sacrifice anything, including himself, to protect and pursue his ambitions. By the end of it, he's barely able to control the situation when the trio arrive in the village. Only few things go according to plan but for the most part he lets Riko, Reg and Nanachi make the decisions that ultimately lead to the end of the village. I think that Wazukyan is a wish gone rampant. He wants this adventure, to be this leading force. And while the wish started with good intentions, its become corrupted. There's so many instances into his descant into madness and his transformation that he refuses to empathize with the world. Rather he's empathizing with his vision of the world. People's sacrifices are seen less as sacrifices and more like everyone's happy to do their duty to the goal. To him, they all want the same thing, so the consequences of actions are (for lack of a better word) inconsequential if they lead up to what they all want. Over time, it feels like he's created this blissful ignorance of how people actually feel, their true motivations, and their long term affects. When Vueloeluko is trapped in Irumyuui's head, he acts almost like he did the right thing by imprisoning her. That if anything, he did her a favor and looking over Irumyuui will make her happy. He completely disregards the pain she's actually in though. His ultimate goal is no longer about his people, its about one last adventure. And if they all die trying to have it, then he believes its a death they would all welcome. This is the greed of a wish.

Being a villain kinda requires evil intent, while Wazukyan did everything he did to fulfill the wishes of the Ganja, which was inherently selfless. He took it to its logical conclusion, the absolute extreme, rather like Bondrewd. But UNLIKE Bondrewd, he was not willing to sacrifice his Ganja family. I think he viewed what happened to Irumyuui as, in the end, technically what Irumyuui wanted, and didn't view it as bad (even though it kinda totally was). This is further cemented in his willingness to die once he was certain his people would be able to continue on. It was fine if they went on without him, because it was never about him. Now, as a part of Faputa, the Ganja have become something greater than human, and found satisfaction to their eternal "homesick longing".

Wazukyan does what he does to make sure they can survive to make it to that promised land, even if his crew disagrees with the methods. both are committed, and both are despicable, but at the same time, they are not selfish, and the root goals are noble, but the abys twisted those goals, twisted them, made them monsters made from humans, both in flesh and in soul.

an excellent video. i’d also like to mention how belaf and wazukyan are very interesting foils to one another.
wazukyan, as mentioned in the video, takes “the ends justifies the means” but for the sake of his people, unlike for survival and knowledge’s sake like best dad bondrewd (the latter who i’d fight in a parking lot). even as a narehate, he did seem to specifically keep vueko in irumyuui’s head because he was aware of how much they cared for one another. he is, like you said, a person who does selfish things for selfless purposes.
belaf is different. he starts out the story as someone very intense but kind, comforting vueko when he noticed her lack of self-esteem. and his striking, clear blue eyes symbolizes that kindness-which was his downfall and what ultimately turned him into a narehate, because unlike wazukyan he was horribly guilt-ridden over his eating irumyuui’s children. when he became a narehate he got rid of his eyes, a symbol that he gave up his previous kind nature. and even when he was begging to be left behind to die wazukyan insisted he help him forward to survive.
(i’d actually really like to see you do a similar video on belaf-there’s a lot to dissect with him too)
but again: i agree with a lot of what you said in this video. wazukyan’s not my favorite made in abyss character, but he’s most definitely a very well written character who i love.

Well said!! Wazukyan is without a doubt an incredibly in-depth character whose so well written that nothing feels concrete about him. The fact that we can even speculate and theorise proves that the motivations of Akihito’s characters are so vague and ambiguous that they genuinely feel human enough to interpret.
I adore the correlation you have made between Belafu’s final appearance and his previous one. I speculated for a while that his eyes were his defining feature, that he uses them to witness things of beauty and to read of things of interest. But when he was faced with the harsh reality of his decisions, the sheer guilt alone almost makes me feel like he no longer wanted to see, as if he had felt no right to be witness of his own future. He wanted to die.
I think it falls right into the idea of shifting forms based on a person’s desires. Belafus form likely resembles the beauty he yearned for but will never be able to see because he feels no right to see it. Then again, that’s all just speculation 😁
Cheers for watching! I’d love to do some stuff on Belafu if I’ve got the time 👌

@@TheMickellPickell exactly. I honestly don't understand why people call him a villain (having said that, I haven't read past that point because I'm rationing the story so it lasts longer!) Not only that, but morality can only exist in so far as it doesn't contradict itself. Letting people die out of unwillingness to carry the burden of going against morality - a morality that can only exist in a civil man-controlled environment - without asking said individuals whether they would rather die or not through the consumption of a dead thing is, in itself, even more morally wrong. It would be essentially be letting people die because of your own standards. Heck, if I were the newborns and I were told after I died naturally I would be indispensable in so far as I would be eaten to save lives, I'd be cool with it. Like sure, funerals are good for us who wouldn't gain anything from the eating of the dead, but damn is it better to know my death - and therefore my life - were worth so much to others.
In a lot of ancient civilisations it was considered a sign of respect to eat the dead. It's like saying "everything about you had value, and through us you will live on".

So true! Even I agree that Bondrewd despite being a pivotal obstacle in the main trios journey, is also a victim to some degree. His insanity is likely a result of not just living inside the abyss, but also using the zoaholic which canonically causes people to go insane after consistent use. I love Akihito's ability to write "antagonists", because that tight-rope is never walked in traditional anime.

Antagonist and “villain” are very different terms. I think made in abyss does an amazing job of creating pure antagonists, simply , those who stand in the way of the protagonist or whose actions lead to our main groups progression. I equally don’t label bodnrewd a “villian” he himself even admits to loving all of his children and truly knowing these experiments have tremendous value for humanity and understanding the abyss. Perspective and relativism is important. This story produces so many interesting characters and challenges for our main cast to overcome. Very cool.

He definitely is not a villain. The circumstance they had makes it hard to simply divide his actions with a right or wrong. Just like the Trolley Problem, Wazukyan standing idly by when he knew how to save people is also not a good thing. I like how it's not a simply good or evil dilemma because just like reality, it's much more complex and blurry like how soldiers feel at war. What makes this more apparent is that none of the healed party members did anything against Wazukyan's decision, well because it saved their life. Even as they saw how Irumyuui looks now.
He even recognizes that he's fucked by how he said Belaf is needed because he never got used with the suffering making him the most noble of them.

Excellent! Yep, values are ordered hierarchically. If 'the safety and welfare of my loved ones' is the top value then all other values are either subordinate to it or at least cannot contradict it. That's the way it works. Subordinate values can't violate superordinate values. That's the system. Once you know the rules then figuring out the logic behind moral decision-making, whether they be gray or not, becomes easy.

Nice FF9 music! I sorta associate both FF9 and MIA together gor some reason. Similar vibes sometimes.
As for the actual video, I also got this feeling from him. He seems like the kind of guy who is selfless, who is happy when others are having a good time or pursuing a dream, never putting them down, instead saying "Nice! That's cool!" And giving a high five To Riko in the Testicle Shop. However that does take a backseat when either his group or his own dream is at stake. Basically like you said, his moral compass is on the "ends"not on the "means." Probably sees himself as a guardian angel of his people.
This seems to be a theme, and I think is a critique of Riko's mindset. She too is very focussed on her goal, and she seems to think it through a similar way, where ends may justify the means, but she hasn't lost touch with the means yet. Both Bondrewd and Wazukan mirror her mindset, in how they approach their goal, however these two seem to have lost touch with morality, while Riko has not (yet)
Personally I beleive this arc will culminate with the party becoming mirrors of their antagonists, and them dealing with that transformation, and sacrifice.
Transformation (life and death cycle is a part of this), Sacrifice, and Dreams, seem to be the big themes in this work, from what I can find. I think a climax may involve Riko choosing between sacrifing everyone or losing her dream.
On an unrelated note, I think the bottom of the abyss leads to a seperate existance. If the Abyss was inspired by the innards of a tree, then either orth or the bottom is the roots or the leaves. Personally Orth is the roots because they provide nutrients to the abyss, and the leaves...who knows.
Some guy also had a theory on how the Abyss was a uterus and I buy that idea too. To a a degree. The Abyss definetly seems to be "alive" or at least designed to "eat" , a malevolent force designed to bring you deeper and consume you, either for nature and life (simple nutrient exchange. Blood and Corpses give life to others) or maybe something more malevolent and scheming. The Abyss seems unnatural, perhaps it was created by the creators of Artifacts and the fuel they need is death, Madoka Magica style? With Tsukushi, who knows how twisted it will be. And it's probably connected to the extinction event that killed all the praying skeletons, and the birthday disease
Sorry for the mini essay, I get carried away lol

This was a phenomenal read!!! Don't apologise at all!
I also love how you have connected both major characters to Riko. She very much replicates some of their behaviours after all. She saved Veko not really caring if *she was a good person* so that she could accomplish her goal of finding Nannachi as quickly as possible. Also when Wazukyan asks about whether Riko has "come to hate" him, she brushes it off as a "well I don't really know you that well"...I think its a portrayal of how even she understands what it's like to push aside morality to achieve certain results.
Also, that theory of the uterus makes total sense considering how sentient the abyss truly is. With the forcefield and the curse being regarded as "the blood of the abyss" and its rapid changes being similar to that of how overtime the biology of one's body begins to change as well.
*Also Madoka Magica is literally my second favourite anime to Made in abyss...glad someone who not only loves Vivi also has quality taste in anime**

I just comment this on your other video but I think it kinda connected to this.
Base on what he represent on the series he was more like an Observer more than a villain.
When Wazukian has been asked by Vieko on what he is planning when the time Riko and his gang is on the village he said to her that "the Future of the Village is for this children to decide" when Riko is fighting the Floating waterlike beehive he does not try to hinder or help them he just observe.
Based on his form on this chapter and his abilities, am I the only one who thinks that he looks like a "Seed"?
I really hope that after this, his remains become a sapling then become a giant Tree like Harold on Fallout, and he becomes an Observer for the adventurers of the abyss.
Tree for me symbolize Wisdom and Observer since they live pretty long and they can't move or do anything just stuck there on that environment.
Wazukian is pretty knowledgeable since he can see the future and doesn't really hinder people from doing what they want which is a characteristic of an observer.
Also didn't he put an Egg on him?
I'm pretty sure when he become a narehate it doesn't disappear it just cause a massive scar.
The reason why the Egg doesn't work is because adult body is complex so maybe it will work later on when most of his body already destroyed.
If this is a game Tree Wazukian can be like that one quest giver dude who be like "If you go into this direction you can find what you seek" since he know what happens in the future.
And he is like a person you can ask where the monster you are trying to find go.

Naa you see I took Riko's idea "why would you stop your journey at the entrance of the lowest point ever recorded" slightly differently, getting stuck in one area was inconvenient for wazukyan, but if hypothetically he could find a way to have exited the barrier safetly perhaps with a third egg,
dieing from exhaustion and destruction of his hollow body is unlikely as he didn't get absorbed unscreen.
some suggest he changed his mind on using the wishing egg on Riko and he wouldn't have expected another chance at a village forming from that and it's like he would have been able to piggyback a ride to the abyss with a hypothetically mutating Riko but that's also not right, too unpredictable with her team being comprised of dear friends.
Think the man would try to use the wishing egg despite the suggested consequence as his intentions were always extremely decisive ? Isn't part of Made of Abyss's appeal the realization that we haven't changed much since our own childhood? after one hundred fifty years the hollow we met was actually quite menacing looking, but like you said never threatening in his questions or conversations, still sounded like a one piece character.

The thing is, he couldn’t have known the suffering that would come to Irrumyui by giving her the wishing egg. From what the interference units told him, it really only safely works and fulfills wishes if kids, and she happened to be the only one he could put his trust in. Not like any of them knew it would or could get scrambled with how desperate and in pain she was when given it that would gel so many of her immediate desires together.
When it did what it did to her and the cure ended up being in her children, why let that aspect of her wish and the suffering with it go to waste by not using them for the one thing they were likely born for? There was no turning back anyway, and doing nothing would’ve meant death for everyone who had put their trust in him.
I think his own desperation and inner regret of the situation was really shown on his face when he explained to Vueko that he had to start taking the “children” while they were still alive since fresh = stronger healing. It holds on his face and even though he’s healthy and should (if he were truly heartless and unaffected by the pain Irrumyui was in and the choices he had made) be at an emotion high since it worked and his crew was essentially back from the brink of death…at that one, rare, moment-despite the smile, he looks tired. He looks emotionally drained and tortured inside as he listens to Iryumuii’s screams for her children. It was a big decision he alone had been forced to make while the other sages were down, and even though he was trying to remain positive and deny the horror of it all, it still slipped through in his barely-put together expression there.
He didn’t WANT to do it. He didn’t want the trip to have to end up going like this, clearly. But he was backed into a corner and felt he had no other feasible choice. So he dug his heels in and took the path full-on. And I think the toll of it made him lose his marbles a bit afterwards.

Simple people will try to justify his pragmatism "he did nothing wrong" but the whole point of the story is that all of them had an injustice towards Irumyuui and even they acknowledged it themselves and so the karma that is Faputa was embodied. And despite her purpose, she GREW to understand that the people inside also developed over time an understanding of "value". It was cathartic for everyone with Faputa essentially eating/inheriting every thought, dream, desire, etc. of the village and her mother (much like a shonen protagonist)
Wazukyan was pragmatic in the name of survival yet cruel to unacknowledge Irumyuui's feelings. Belaf despite being insightful, gave in to his hunger and desire while hiding never having to face judgement. And Vueko being loving yet never sacrificed her humanity the same way Irumyuui has for everyone. All of the elders had a cathartic and yet karmic end relating to all of that. It was beautiful.

With Bondrewd, we know he "loves" the children he experiments on ad his thought process behind it. We may not agree with it, but we can see how he came to his conclusions. Maybe I missed something and am just stupid, but I don't really understand a lot of what is doing through his head and how he feels. I understand the whole "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few" thought process, but I still don't understand how he came to be the person to have that perspective and if he never gave up on his adventure goal then what his overall idea/aspiration of what an adventure was.

He's always depicted as calm and content even when doing things he (through calmly selected words) knows is wrong, and he acknowledged them almost nonchalantly as if it's an everyday thing. Perhaps he's desintesized from leading his group through their exile, but it's made his character darker in almost sociopathic way. He knows it's wrong, his empathy's working fine, he wanted his people happy.. but he keep his vibe, smile, and composure THE SAME at all times. Except for some physical grunting like when they're breaching the abyss with serious face.. he never get mad nor get sad or looks guilty when he did immoral things. Its as out of place as watching someone looking content or maybe even happy in a funeral of their loved ones. It's creepy, and people may mistake him for having something behind the situation, like getting an inheritance or something.
I mean, maybe people would empathize with him more if he's crying/clearly feeling bad when he had to make hard decision or maybe when he's killing irumyui's kids. Like people did when they see vueko puking when she found out, she's clearly upset about it, and Belaf who tried to refuse.
Looking deeper tho, the reason (for me) he's only looking like a villain but not actually is.. is because regardless of his lack of expression.. it was not for him, it was genuinely for others and he is forced to make decisions after given only bad cards in his life. He's trying his best and choosing the lesser evil out of the circumstances, bearing the responsibility and sin of making the choice. It like playing one of those battle card games with only the worst cards in the entire game. He didn't ask for anything else other than their trust to him, he put the others first, even before his own feelings and rep. This is an Itachi from Naruto's level of commitment.. seem like a villain but is actually just given a bad card deck in life and have to make do with it for the sake of others.
Also I suspect he had to get used to maintain his composure to be calm at all times to keep his people calm. Because if the leader crumble, the followers more often than not also will.. unless someone else took charge but both vueko and belaf are not in condition for it. So he learn to hide his feelings and keep calm. Also, if he seem to feel bad about.. say.. eating the kids, so will his people, and more of them would follow belaf's example instead.. and more of them will die, not mention possibility of wasting irumyui's kids = making their death useless. By normalizing eating them, with a confident smile and nonchalant attitude, might alleviate some of his people's guilt/feelings. They can just chuck it to his orders or something.
He didn't hate on people who blamed or hate him either because he knows they're justified to feel so.

He's putting on a brave face in front of his companions because he is the "leader". He has to stay composed all the time, because if he loses it, everyone will.... This is the real tragedy of Wazukyan's character.

@@D4rkenedskies Yes I know :) I read your comment and it's quite insightful and concise. I wrote that just to confirm that his motivation is most definitely pure and he doesn't really have any bad intentions, as some people make it out to be.... He's genuinely a good person caught in terrible circumstances.

Love how him and Bondrewd are both men trying to make the world a better place, and to take care of those around them. One goes too far with science, the other goes to far with religion. Neither were bad guys, genuinely understandable antagonists. It’s some top tier character creation,

Not to mention the fact that they are both victims of circumstance. Bonedrewd came into contact with the Zoaholic, which hinted that after repeatedly switching bodies, he began to lose his sense of self, making the decision to use children as a means of scientific progression, all the more understandable. Whilst in Wazukyan's case, he was met with a morally questionable choice as a leader, and sought to do whatever it took to ensure the safety of everyone's dreams, all at the expense of one little girl. Just fantastic character writing on Akihito's part.

He is not the villain, just crazy without empathy. Just like Bondrewd, he is lawful evil. He could wait for Irumui's babys to die in her arms but he kinda likes the suffering and his plan was to use another child to make sure he lives on (and, at the end of the day, if you value your own life, you will do what you have to do).
