Made in Abyss: Dawn of The Deep Soul is HORRIFYING

  • Made in Abyss Dawn of The Deep Soul is one of the most dark and gruesome anime films I have ever experienced but more than that it's the culmination of Nanachi's character arc and how she has to overcome her past. Bondrewd is an amazing antagonist and Pruska represents the hopeful optimism of adventure throughout the film.

I just need to get this off of my chest. Everybody loves to obsess over how amazing characters like Nanachi, Bondrewd, Reg, and Prushka are, but Riko doesn't get the love she deserves. She's by far the most underrated character in this series. She's a great protagonist with amazing character development, especially in the upcoming S2 if you've read the manga. The day Chapter 46 gets adapted is going to be glorious.

@@nightlight2499 All the Riko haters are gonna shut up real quick once that chapter gets adapted. She'll finally get her own big solo moment once it gets adapted. (Spoilers for anyone reading) I just hope they change it a bit. The plan using people with explosives felt kind of unearned as it was conviently there and shoehorned in after her big moment, which taints it because it feels like she got lucky. I think they should fulfill the tease from episode 9 in Season 2 combined with the manga version of that scene. The way I would change it is that she throws the Sun Orb up to blind it, then she jumps off Kajya's back and bashes it with the Blaze Reap. That we be SOOO amazing and satisfying!

The thing I like about Bondrewd's character arc is that he didn't change in the end, the way of achieving his goal did. He already gave his humanity away, and is completely single minded in his mission. The only reason he stopped was he was doing was because he saw that the crew had the strength and resolve to complete his mission. He essentially tricked them in the end to leave on good terms because he may have a time where they would be useful in the future. Really sad and frustrating but also really good story writing

Just because you are miserable in the present doesn't mean you are forever going to live in misery, specially kids. The potential to better their situation and become great adults is there, your life can still adquire meaning in the future. They are just kids, they have a whole life to draw meaning and purpose ahead. But Bondrew took that away from them and either killed them or left them with traumas. >manipulation
In a way yes it was but the Abyss can distinguish between real and fake emotions. The Blessing can only be investigated and acquired if the love is genuine and mutual (as we see from Nanachi and Mitty). Bondrewd's corrupted humanity has left only positive emotions in him. He only feels genuine fatherly gratefulness and love for the children he experiments on and for the protagonists that destroyed his facility and killed four of his bodies. It is implied that since he has no negative emotions, he does not understand the suffering that he inflicts unto others.
      >selfishness
Not exactly. It was confirmed that he always tries the experiments on himself first as proven by his White Whistle. He only uses others if its necessary. Abandoned orphans are the most accessible and impressionable (in the manga that he's wanted in other countries possibly due to human trafficking) so they are perfect for the investigation of the Blessing and that's why he used them.
All of these experiments are, in his words, "The preparation for the upcoming 2000 years" implying that Bondrewd is doing all this to stop a crisis that might kill everyone in the surface (we see remnants of past civilizations in the layers of the Abyss, and also the Narehate Village arc proves that the layers DO increase and kill civilizations. Its possible that this "2000 year cycle" thing is the cause) and also to provide a higher survival rate for cave raiders. None of this is for his own survival as we know that he does not mind dying even as a human nor does he mind losing his sanity when he used the Zoaholic, he does it because its necessary and he has lost his human negative emotions to despair about it.
Its not selfishness, its for necessity. Bondrewd may be unforgivable and irredeemable but you really have to understand that everything we saw in this show points to Bondrewd not having negative malicious emotions and his actions are dictated by a strong sense of duty and logic to keep humanity alive in the surface. He's not a Shou Tucker, he's an anti-villain monster.
I hate how every time I talk about Bondrewd it needs to be an essay because of his complexity, sorry for a long one.

Him adopting her was more an act of manipulation, selfishness and cruelty. His 'love' for her came from what she could give, he never intended to protect or care for her outside of what he would gain from it.

    • @robertonome2448
      @robertonome2448 Před 2 lety +192

I think that what makes it so interesting are Bondrewd's own definitions of moral & ethics - which *are* existent in some way. He said it himself, if it was possible, he'd easily sacrifice himself over and over (no matter how much pain the process would cause) just for the sake of "pathing the way of the future". Using children as the subjects was his last option in a kind of way.
Furthermore, even though he lost the great majority of his very life's work at the ending, he was not even mad; on the opposite, he was delighted by his "creation"'s and her team's competency as cave raiders; willingly passing his torch to them so to speak.
He's pretty much a textbook psychopat but not quite; he still seems to actually want his former victims/foes to surpass him In some sort of twisted way; all for the sake of finding out who's the most fit to uncover the depths of the abyss. Almost (if we can even call it so) an altruistic way of thinking, which is quite unique for such a (apparently) cruel and ruthless villain archetype

As someone who has moved around a lot, and “been on many adventures”, I’ve said many goodbyes, and each one comes with a sense of bittersweet pain and joy wrapped into the same images and memories. That’s exactly what this series feels like. I almost feel as if the abyss is a metaphor for the the loss of innocence that we experience with the passage of time and new experiences. Some people never dig into it all, they are the surface dwellers. Among those who dig, there will be a few who lose themselves.. but the ones who hold on to love for others and a sense of wonder at the experiences to be had, they discover their true selves.
I have never had an ayahuasca trip but Made in Abyss is the second closest I’ve come (after that special brownie when I was 19). It digs up such deep, unprocessed emotions from childhood until now. It feels like my Ghibli or my Disney. It does for me what those seem to do for people who are ok with things being more sanitized. I haven’t done any anime content here but I may have to make a video on this.

This is one of the few manga I've actually had to drop, and I got pretty far. I really like the characters and the world, but I read manga as an escape from the harsher aspects of reality (grief, loss, conflict, etc) whereas this series pastes a fantasy coating on harsh reality. If it's your thing, you'll love it, but if you live in a dark place mentally, I honestly wouldn't recommend it.

I absolutely get where you're coming from, but I fell the darkness of the series does an absolutely exceptional job at showing the light at the end of the tunnel, as mentioned in the video. There are definitely parts of the manga and show that are horrifying, and almost sickening in how twisted they are, but in the end not only does the group progress past these trials and tribulations, but they try to make it better as they go through. In the end I feel that is an excellent goal for anyone, and always know that no matter how dark the night is, there is always dawn coming soon.

This story comforts me. in Veko's words:(not the exact quote) "I didnt find what I was looking for and I was still in darkness. But, what a warm darkness it is."
Veko treasured the darkness that kept her company during her search for light.
Theres always something to treasure no matter how deep you go in the Abyss of life, you must not be blinded. those treasures will keep you strong no matter how simple they are (Veko's comforting darkness) and even if you lose them they will still be a part of you in memory and in soul (Mitty & Prushka) and they will make you stronger in every turn in the Abyss. it sounds like your typical shonen idea but MiA shows us that we take it too lightly.
The curses and blessings of real life, if taken properly, will make you stronger. And thus in Bondrewd's words:
"May your journey be filled with curses and blessings."

It is series like these that attract me the most because they're not a sugar coated happy fantasy where nothing bad happens, I feel like in some way misery is reflected in the media and makes me feel closer to the inner demons and struggles I carry.
Real life is not a happy adventure but I rather see fictional characters overcoming their misery than watching a show where privileged characters are living happy lives, I've even identified series that one could say are the fantasy for privileged people, series that feel too plastic, like a product, My Hero Academia is a series that always comes to mind in that regard.

Wise like someone can be with many years of life, yet still innocent to much of the world. She's super cute and fluffy. And I really like that she seems modest when it comes to sexual things which is not only uncommon for her age, it also makes for many funny moments in the dark series, and I genuinely enjoy modesty rather than what today's world seems to want everyone to be.

We dont know how old she was when she first dived in to the Abyss, we dont know how long she lived on the fourth layer with Mitty, Ozen told Reg and Riko that the depths mess with ones feel of time and since Nanachi is no longer human any indication of her age her body might give, like her size, is questionable. Fore a non-human exampel Yugo the Eliatrope from Wakfu is at the age of 19 about the size of Riko.

So if Nanachi discovers some new monster, Bondrewd will know about it and can prepare in advance. Also, if the group reaches a new undiscovered layer and die, Bondrewd can learn from this failure himself.

His actions can be explained by his vast selfishness, complete lack of empathy-which is partially due to him losing his mind more and more every time he used the zoaholic (relic that scatters his mind/consciousness into different bodies). So far it wasn't stated as to whether he became twisted due to using the zoaholic or if he was already twisted to begin with and simply became *more* twisted after using it.

Having watched the movie, I must say, very impressive how you avoided spoilers.
On an unrelated note, I fucking cried watching this video. Guess that serves as evidence enough how horrifying this movie was.

    To pet the Bondrewd.
    To hold the Bondrewd.

I must be extremely desensitized. This movie and Made In Abyss season 1 were not that horrifying to me, but maybe that's because I read so many reviews on how horrific it is before watching it so expected worse. The only part that was truly hard to watch was the part with Riko's arm in season 1, and everything to do with Mitty was disturbing, plus of course the sexualisation of the child characters. But I didn't find it that graphic for the most part, and the story wasn't that heart-wrenching to me. Just me?
Edit: Many of the concepts are horrifying, but I didn't find this translated to actually making me feel the full force of the horror on an emotional or physical level, if that makes sense.

seriously, Made In Abyss is one of the best pieces of fiction ive ever witnessed. im fully serious when i say the only part i didnt care for was the teacher in the orphanage, dont remember her name but the older lady. she plays a super small part in the series, so it basically doesnt matter that she exists. its just crazy to me that every single other part of the entire thing all the way through to volume 11 which is all that is out so far in the manga at least, is just about perfection in my eyes. sure, there are the weird things that were drawn or animated, which the series gets in trouble for. but at least for me, its super easy to look past those weird moments because of how invested i am in the story. asides from that teacher, i love every single character in the story, and i think every character thats been introduced so far is at the least an 8/10. even characters who appear to not be important play a pretty good part in the story, like Maa for example.
i cant wait for the rest of this series to be released, its the first series thats captivated me in such a way.
