  • Award winning series Made in Abyss is praised for it’s painstakingly crafted worldbuilding and heart wrenching stories. But between questionable depictions of young characters, truly disturbing scenes, and the 'desires' of the creator on full display, fans have questioned the integrity of the anime and manga. I'll be diving into the controversies of the series and exploring if certain depictions are "realistic" or just plain weird.

UPDATE: Hey All! I've gotten a couple of comments from people that clearly care about MiA and I'm here to say that's great. I also love the series. The point of the video is not to bash the series or it's storytelling but to point out general concerns that I and other fans have about certain depictions of young characters within it. These things are controversial because they involve certain depictions of children in a way that does not add to the progression of the story and seems to only be an outlet for the creator's specific desires. I hope to help people realize that it's okay to question things that might seem concerning or make you uncomfortable in our favorite series because we should be critical about the things we watch. Thanks for watching the video and leaving your thoughts!

@SH19922x I'm just not overly concerned about the abuse of imaginary children. The story is too cool to get squeamish about animated characters. What bothers me most is that most of the sexualized scenes are inconsequential to the story. Sure there’s stuff like Vuekos past shown to be horrifying. But then you get scenes of Riko pooping on a toilet that licks her clean. Why is that part of the story? Why does Akihito feel the need to share his weird fetishes in his work?
Literally nothing changes if you took those scenes out. Just draw hentai on the side or just keep it to yourself. Hard to defend or recommend Made in Abyss when you constantly have to separate Art from the Artist. Constantly being taken out of the story and hoping he hasnt harmed any child in real life is frustrating.

Made in Abyss is literally my favorite show ever. I care so much for this show that the gross and weird stuff is even more painful for me. What frustrates me to no end is that every single occurrence of urine, feces, and genitalia could have been removed after the first time and it'd literally make the show infinitely better for it.
It being so close to an unambiguous masterpiece in my eyes is what makes me so incredibly upset that I cannot blindly recommend it to anyone without a big warning and describing it as "a Mona Lisa but da Vinci decided to draw a big-enough-to-be-distracting swastika in the corner".

She knows she's not making it back, and she'll never see her friends or a sunrise ever again.

    • @magnadramon0068
      @magnadramon0068 Před rokem +15

Your guess that it's to egg on doujin artists is likely the case. It's a pretty well established practice in the anime and manga industry to add in subtext and hints in a work in order to inspire fans to make fan art. That's why so many shonen anime have bishonen as leads. It's to get the fujoshi to ship the characters.
There is a certain degree of ambivalence to this practice in Japan though. Some people don't like the blatant pandering. And others don't like it because too much pandering can lead to a really lacking work.

Anime and manga tend to pander to their most extreme fans/community members (including doujinshi artists) in a way that western media often does not. I wonder if this was exacerbated by the financial crash of 2008, which destroyed much of the international market and reduced TV+movie revenue for the domestic anime for about 7 years. Manga suffered similar drops in sales. To balance it out, the industry seems to have relied heavily on merch sales, gambling, and gatcha games targeted at the most committed fans rather than seek broad appeal (and cut costs by relying more and more on fanservice rather than story and framerate). Since Made In Abyss was serialized in 2012, it probably was written to be creepier than it would otherwise have been...
Or that's what I though until I saw the mannequin at 18:20... O_O

Glad someone finally said it. I thoroughly enjoyed this series at first and tried hard to separate the highly unnecessary sexual garbage from what is otherwise incredible world-building, great characters, and a fantastic horror environment that I very much enjoyed reading, but it kept getting worse and worse to the point where something about the "Papa's rod" bit in Dawn of the Deep Soul pissed me off enough to strongly consider calling it quits. Eventually gave up around the village arc when it became clear this was going to be a running theme the rest of the series. People can scrounge together all the excuses they want about how "it's a dark series, of course it'll include dark themes" or "censorship is bad" nonsense, somehow forgetting that 99% of the qualms are directed explicitly at the fact that literal child characters are constantly being put in sexual situations that do nothing to further the story. Christ, just within the first few pages of the manga I literally had to check behind me to make sure no one could see THAT panel over my shoulder the first time I read it. People will bend over backwards to avoid any criticism of this series, even from others who admit to enjoying it, and that only makes things more miserable. You don't need sex to be scary and you certainly don't need it from an author who has admitted he actively enjoys loli/shota and can generally be deduced to be doing it for disgusting fun, not through a solely """"artistic"""" lens. Yeah, I really wanted to like MiA, but I've never been into horror that relies heavily on disgust, especially not with kids as protags. I was expecting more psychological/eldritch horror going in, and there are some elements of that, and I loved those segments. But the final episode of season 1 was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I have never felt nauseated watching a show or a movie before, but that did it. I'm glad you went into the varying types of grossness involved with the show, because a lot of people I'm acquainted with kind of handwave it with stuff like "anime/Japanese culture is just like that" or "if you aren't aging every anime character up 5 years in your head then you can't enjoy any anime" (a phrase that makes me want to commit violence). I totally understand not being able to stick with this series. The way you feel about the end of season one is how I feel about the movie, I've never watched an anime that made me feel physically sick to my stomach before.
Also people telling you to "age characters 5 years up" is concerning as hell. These creators obviously made their characters certain ages for a reason, ignoring that is problematic. The anime fandom has always had a problem with sweeping concerning aspects like this under the rug and I'm not down for that. I just want for people, especially adults, to be openly critical of what they watch. But if everyone is going to ignore it anyway I want to at least be the one to address it. Thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts!

    • @zillychu
      @zillychu Před rokem +26

I empathize with your disgust, but being able to enjoy something despite flaws only shows how different people ingest media differently. It's more problematic to say it's "concerning" that someone can handwave the controversial content. It's not indicative of any moral standing, it simply means you process the media differently. Me not being able to handle gore doesn't make doctors "concerning" for being able to stomach it.
Just ingest media critically, with appropriate awareness. That's all we have to do. Fiction is fantasy and we've all got different levels of steel stomachs to tolerate discomfort.

I really appreciate how the degree of bodily fluids and nudity shown CAN add a degree of grittiness to the story. Because it's a survival scenario in an incredibly dangerous setting, of course the characters are going to have to attend to their bodies and get used to things that are normally tiptoed around in civilized society in order to survive. When Riko is shirtless after vomiting on herself and immediately starts hyping up Reg's Incinerator, for example, the focus of the scene is not on Riko, so it feels more like the type of nudity that you mentioned is acceptable in Japan. Bit of a culture shock, but it makes the world feel a lot more real, and the overall tone of the scene isn't really a sexual or awkward one. But there are also clearly times that it's being thrown in for its own sake, and some scenes are just unforgivably stupid, like nanachi getting boobs from Kuongatari bites in the movie, and especially Riko's bathroom break during the entrance to the 6th layer. This show definitely has a degree of weirdness that would work more to its own advantage if it wasn't used in such a tone-deaf way 80% of the time.

I will admit that the third movie and season 2 were hard to watch though. I feel like made in abyss is doing well because it's covering several bases of horror. ( body disfiguration, fear of the unknown, impending and unstoppable death, monsters, visceral depictions of gore, and a little bit of atmospheric horror) It's a mixed bag driven forward by the misadventures of children.( like the goonies, goosebumps, and bokurano).

If someone is disgusted or rejects some scenes, maybe they should consider whether this anime is for them at all. This creator is like that and creates his own image of animation regardless of whether someone likes it or not. This anime contains a lot of scenes of gore and violence against children, which does not bother most viewers, but scenes of nudity and defecation do. So I advise some people to think twice about whether they really want to watch it, because despite all the cuteness it looks at first glance, this is not an anime for an emotionally immature viewer.

@@rickchakraborty2087the thing is,gore and violence usually have a purpose in story and character development, the deliberate choice to include them can easily be attributed to "making the audience feel sad for/hate a character, showing the seriousness or danger of a situation, make the story give off a darker vibe etc". This is most of the time not the case with sexual themes in a non sexuality focused story, ESPECIALLY if they can easily be removed from the story without really changing anything because where will you attribute these deliberate choices to include them then ? Other than "the author is sexually attracted to this" or" it's fan service".?
The only exception to this is in the show could be parts of Vueko's backstory because the implications of sexual abuse ARE important for understanding how she ended up in that crew and for making the audience feel empathy for her, but that's pretty much it, everything else blatantly served no purpose and gives off red flags purely because of the fact that it serves no purpose. That's why people are moved by these and not the violence and gore.

Thanks for voicing my feelings on this stuff - I was on the phone yesterday recommending MiA to a friend and felt incredibly awkward in doing so. I hate that I felt required to tell him about the weird seemingly fetish content in a show that follows primarily two ~12 year olds. I think this type of content tarnishes an otherwise perfect anime, and it's immensely frustrating to me that in such a fantastic world that has so much depth this frankly disgusting stuff is shown. If it benefited the plot, that's one thing; but all 'those' scenes in the show never benefit the plot.

There's a certain level of discomfort that I feel enhances made in abyss, but it's surrounded by a bunch of stuff that makes me ask "is this necessary". America Is more tuned to violence so excessive bleeding is uncomfortable but probably more acceptable, Vuekos past is dark without being as graphic as it could have been, and the body horror of the 6th layer are all uncomfortable in ways that set the tone of this world and adds tension.
The bathroom stuff, such as the toilet being a living thing never feels like it's adding to the horror and just makes me want whatever's on screen to move back to the plot. Even if I try to bend over backwards I cant think of reasons for why half of these things need to happen or be shown the way it is.

(Unfortunately, as a Rurouni Kenshin's fan I have the disadvantage of knowing that the stories a person creates don't necessarily show off their deviations and sometimes it's the sublimation through art that helps people, so te say, exorcise their demons. I'm aware of people enjoying MIA while being disturbed by the author's clearly explicit fetishes, but I never thought that people ignores it because of how good the storytelling is. Tsukushi even made a point through Bondrewd's speech of curses and blessings of the abyss. While the story is great and all we can't deny that manga is the author's "fetish journey" "fetish diary" to be in fact, I mean he even showed interests in boob windows in the current chapter and surprisingly enough it's primarily adults that are subject of his fetish so far (though the other one has Loli aesthetic).
One that I admired about this mangaka is that he doesn't hold back and even though he doesn't hold back about everything somehow he makes sure that it doesn't affect the story. Though it's still take a (creep) cave raider to fully enjoy his work. I'm that creep.

The hate for dawn of the deep soul here hurts me. Made in abyss to me is another world not that of our own where everything we deem moral has been squandered, which leads to a unique atmoshere. The fact that these kids are placed in such horendous situations especially the sexual ones basically tells me, and I wish others saw it that way too, is that NOTHING in their world is really sacred. Children are not treated kindly or as precious things, and thats what makes the world as a whole so interesting. Its fucked up, its supposed to make you uncomfortable but not for the shock value. Instead of being grossed out that the world of made in abyss does not adhere to our norms and morals, try to analyze, speculate and just read between the lines of what does that say about that world and morality.
I LOVE dawn of the deep soul so so much because it made me feel all sorts of emotions, and most of all, true hatred. I dont hate THE MOVIE, I hate everything that happens in it. It fuels me with rage. And thats why I love it, no show, movie or media of any sort has made me feel this level of anger, sadness and disgust. Like a horror atraction or a roller coaster I get to tap into emotions I didn't understand where actually there.
I could go into specifics, but to watch made in abyss in a surface level without actually diving into what all that happens actually means, is to miss the point. just know that you are better and be happy you dont live there.

I was even going to look into buying the manga but apparently some of those things are far worse in there so I've decided against it.

While I love MiA and actually enjoy when stories include the gritty disgusting shit, I have to agree that I can't really defend the author for scenes like the licky toilet. I get it's trying to be "weird", but it sincerely comes off as fetish and it's certainly uncomfortable. I could 100% go without this type of unwarranted/inconsequential sexualization. However, I see baths and body fluids as more of a side effect of "being a living human", and I can appreciate the realism to include such scenarios in a setting where these things would indeed be relevant and could pose a serious challenge for survival.
And yeah, putting kids through dark/gruesome shit is certainly A Way™ that can be used to set the tone you want the story to have. But like... being of the author's inclination towards children and children characters... it's absolutely impossible to separate the two, to the point where it's pretty hard to defend (or to want to defend). I also agree with you on the CP problem in Japan, it's much deeper and different from what we have in the west.
While I try to perceive the story through the lens of the characters (kids innocently being kids), I'm still an adult and most people watching are too. We can tell when something goes beyond kids being kids, and sometimes in MiA, it does. I enjoy it a lot, but it really comes with a whole page of footnotes and disclaimers.

@@YukiXKohaku a lot of it went over my head like the bowel movements because I didn't view it as something that can even be sexualized (because it shouldn't be lol). But things like the boy's dong getting hard or apparently something with a butt plug (which I must've erased from memory because my sister brought it up when we talked about it. It's been a long time) are hard to miss and clearly uncomfortable even with the benefit of the doubt. It's stuff like that that makes it too hard to rewatch for me with the idea these were possibly written for sexualization, including the small things I didn't think on before.

I love this series for the story and how it is a unique experience where you cannot get from other stories in any other media. That said I'm not excusing any of these valid accusations towards the author's fetishizations and I will not fault anyone for backing out of the series for those reasons. It's hard to even make the art over artist argument here because it's the art itself that is problematic. Fact of the matter is I'm just tolerating it (for very personal reasons these kinds of things no longer bother or gross me out) but that doesn't mean anyone else should. It's unfortunate that many people couldn't get into a very unique and mind blowing story for this reason but it be how it is. I do have hopes that this will appear much less later in the story since the author had started focusing more on the legally aged characters for the last couple of recent chapters.

Made in abyss is one of y favorite animes of all time because it's so unique and I really like the tragic mysterious story, but it's so sad it cannot be as big as other great animes because it's weird in a lot of ways. I've heard many people say that they'd want to watch it if it wasn't for all the weird things you have mentioned. It's a masterpiece but all the weird scenes could be replaced with much more meaningful scenes about the struggles of the abyss.

You know I thought there wouldn't be much that could shock or bother me after reading both Kodomo no Jinkan and Jou-sama no Eshi (both decent manga that are definitely hard to recommend). But somehow Dawn of The Deep Soul managed to get a "oh Jesus 🤦 what have I gotten myself into this time". That was upon seeing Prushka for the first time and her a Riko having a little girl talk ...about Reg. Then there came the part where all the memes about the "cartridges" started to make sense

I’ve always wanted to get into this series but have had conflicted thoughts due to scenes I’ve seen. So I’m glad it’s at least discussed to be too much among people who absolutely love this show. Maybe I’ll reconsider and give it a try at some point.
Anyone know the best way to experience it? Show, manga, video game? Etc.

This was a surprisingly fair and grounded analysis, from the title I expected surface level bashing of the story, but I was wrong. I was very surprised to see ExplanationPoint's video brought up in this all these years later, I agree with him on almost all points but that video was made before Dawn if the Deep Soul so I'd like to know if his opinion has changed. When it comes to the village of hollows and the many fetishes that are displayed there, one thing I'll say is that I really don't believe one man can have that many fetishes, like it's a lot. Were I to analyze the hollow village story arc, I would compare it to the biblical Sodom and Gomorrah. A village based solely around accruing one's deepest desires, resulting in the village being torn apart and the deaths of all inhabitants. The parallel is pretty close even without the visual cues like how Faputa carries Reg after defeating him. There are also bits of the parable of the Tower of Babel with the humans creating a literal tower to surpass their humanity, to become something greater; and the eventual fall of the tower by God (or in this case Faputa, who is revered like a god.) All in all I think it's a very good series, I think this video was a very good analysis, and I think you might like WatTheWut's summary of Bondrewd as a character, it does not justify his actions but explains his actions in a very clear way that even I missed while reading the manga, giving an extra layer of depth to an already great story.
Final note, the purple cyclops Pakoyan is actually Vueko's romantic partner, something the anime hinted at but left out.

I don‘t mind these fictional children getting in horrible situations. I mean, thank goodness they‘re fictional. For many physically existing children in the real world rn it‘s not really better :

The gore doesn't bother me much personally either, especially since it adds to the worldbuilding of MiA. The kids are in dangerous situations so it makes sense that they would be injured. It is unfortunate to think about real children in dangerous situations everyday but since the events of MiA are fantastical, at least its not depicting real life dangers. Maybe there is something to be discussed about depictions of real children in dangerous situations vs. animations of the same thing. Thank you for leaving your thoughts
