This is why you boost leak test cars whenever you touch the system. A boost leak tester is 80 dollars. Could have saved a lot of damage that way.
You live and you learn, and Rob is really good at learning. I wouldn't be surprised if he started boost leak testing every car from now on. It's just one of those things he hadn't thought of before.
I've even made my own out of a jar, cotton, a soldering iron, and mineral oil
@@NorwayVFX I’ve been through it a lot when dealing with other shops. They often put cars on the dyno wanting me to tune a car with a boost leak. I’ve even found small leaks that are impossible to find with a smoke machine using an actual boost leak tester.
@@1234567890CAB that’s not a boost leak tester that’s a smoke machine. A boost leak tester pressurizes the system. Many times leaks occur under pressure only. Smoke machine is only viable when the leak is what we in the business co sided a large leak.
Rob, for what i have experienced, the housings warping like that acually have been because of running too rich and or too little timing. What happens is, the fuel/air mixture seem to have a little extra time to separate. By having uneven areas in the rotor containing liquid fuel you have areas with a stronger seal then other, instead of it been evenly distributed. Think of it like areas of the chamber “hydrolocking”.
Usually this is not an issue with pump gas, but with e85 and methanol, it can become an issue due to the extra volume of fuel required.
If it was detonation, 9 times out of 10 it shows at the apex seal, either pinching it at the groove, warping them or deleting them. I would trow collapsed rotor faces on there too, but that’s more of a nitrous issue.
+1 too little timing. I wouldn't have thought at such low loads the manifold would glow so red. Also in a previous video there is a shot of revving the engine under no load and the manifold is bright red. Boost leaks were before the throttle body, so shouldn't cause wild variations in MAP or AFR. Event at WOT the MAP sensor would compensate for any leaks and move to a different cell in the fuel and timing tables. Rob mentions 0-13 degrees in the video, seems way too retarded.

I have to agree here. Not a boost leak issue, although that was great to resolve. The housings warped because of compression “pressure” due to the liquid volume on E85 and not enough timing to coalesce.
@@tstarkz123 Well it actually is a boost leak issue. If you take away the air needed (boost leak) you get a very rich mixture. Liquids don't compress and something else needs to give, i.e the housings warping. Timing would'nt help here if you already have to much liquid (E85/gas), as in a very rich mixture. Ignition timing only determines when in the combustion cycle the mixture is ignited. 🙂
@@anderssteen3216 A boost leak only changes manifold pressure, if that causes a rich mixture then it's a tuning issue. A vacuum leak to the fuel pressure reg would do it when the engine is in vacuum and make it lean in boost, but I don't believe that was the case here.
Steve Morris Engines is going through a similar thing with a failure that wasn’t his fault and his total transparency and attitude towards it is commendable. Keep it up. Anything I can learn vicariously saves me money in the long run too.

When you’re tuning using manifold pressure x rpm a boost leak will not affect fuel mixture. Fixing boost leaks will not affect your ve map. However, if you’re tuning using tps rather than manifold pressure it is plausible that boost leaks may have an impact on afr. I don’t watch all the vids so idk what you have done this far but boost leaks don’t have much affect if any on a true ve speed density style table.
So happy the stache is gone, never thought I'd be typing that on a car building CZcams video but here we are.

I also like the idea of the rotary IndyCar but when you were buying it were you thinking about doing something like a le mans prototype instead and bringing rotaries back to a le mans car?
I was just wondering because a lmp3 car has around 550hp, that's a dialed up 2 rotor like this or a dialed down 3 rotor; might be pretty reliable as a 3 rotor (endurance race anyone?)
I saw a mazda lmp car on sale without an engine of bring a trialer a while ago

+ The no rotary rule is outdated anyways and measures are already in place for cars with an advantage (b.o.p). In my opinion it was the manufacturers throwing a hissy fit that caused the rule as there is no real reason rotaries shouldn't be in le mans, the Mazda 787b was actually less powerful than its rivals but it happened to not break down; its rivals all did.
As controversial as my view is is; the Mazda 787b didn't win the 1991 24hr of le mans, it survived it and happened to be promoted to first by the others' dnf.
We should all chip in and give Rob and CZcams etiquette class on ending videos

There's only one thing that always gets me with Rob's videos. The fkn ending. 🥲
Rob, big thing I see is that you are using T2 housings. FD housings have areas around the leading plug hole that have been machined to reduce the thermal stress in that area. Some of the through hole bosses have thinner webbing as well. If you have some FD housings you'll be able to see the differences between them. Thermal stress was a big issues on older motors trying to make more power.
