    My favorite sushi fact is that salmon sushi was introduced to Japan from Norway. Norway was trying to increase the amount of salmon it sold to Japan, so they had to convince the Japanese public that salmon could be eaten raw (it was usually eaten cooked), and it's become one of the more popular fishes for sushi.

      Pacific salmon often has parasites more than Atlantic salmon, so no wonder they were opposed it

    • @MrSeanomon
      @MrSeanomon Před 9 měsíci +32

      I didn’t know that, but I have a counter fact.
      Because salmon sushi was introduced to Japan relatively recently, older people don’t generally eat it so much. As a result, preferring salmon to say… tuna, is sometimes seen as childish.
      Speaking personally, when I was invited to a Michelin star sushi restaurant, my wife (Japanese) asked me not to embarrass myself by ordering salmon.

    • @comradetiedanski6038
      @comradetiedanski6038 Před 9 měsíci +13

      @@MrSeanomon old people don't eat salmon raw because japanese salmon have a huge chance of parasites in them as they live in river and streams as well as the sea (I doubt they care if it's from the altantic sea or not), tuna is fine as it lives in the sea throughout all it's life but japanese salmon don't as it can traverse between both eco-systems. It's understandable for them to not eat raw salmon as they were probably taught not to eat fish raw that got caught in the river.

    • @thecatladytm7172
      @thecatladytm7172 Před 8 měsíci

      @comradetiedanski6038 yeah all salmon can get those parasites. Fun fact, most of the salmon in the world has them! But usually they are already dead or killed in the process of cooking. Which. Obviously doesnt happen with sushi. So dont buy "fishy" sushi or you might have a friend or two burrowing in your guts and feeding on your intestines!

The person put a lot of surströmming cans in the shopping basket. My grandmother used to buy a barrel every year to give some to each family members. You scrape the rice to discard (though my late Grandpa liked to eat some), slice the fish. The smelly part is true, it is a part of it. You grow with it, you get to use to it. Many Japanese don't like it, the smell and the taste, but some who had never had it till later in their lives, like my American husband, come to love it. Nowadays Funa-zushi has become very expensive. I miss it (Especially its eggs).
