@@ap-ir8yk The size of the timing cover is a major part of the problem as the expansion and contraction of an aluminum cover that big will cause the sealant to separate over time. YMMV

I don't do this sort of stuff for a living, so bear that in mind...but when doing something of this sort where accuracy is important, I always use some guide pins to help align things before they 'land'. Takes all the drama out of it. Just some all-thread of the right pitch, or spare bolts with the heads cut off. Long enough so you can easily remove them once the part is in place and the proper fixing bolts can be fitted. It's a method I always use when splitting/mating an engine & gearbox too. Again, saves a load of drama and hassle as well as reducing the risk of damaging things.
I just did an oil pan gasket, and I used that method. Works great. I also put Vaseline on any o-rings.
The engine has alignment dowels for that cover.

Longer studs give you a surface to hang it on and allows you to make sure it’s aligned before you get too close and touch anything. It works well. Felpro puts plastic studs with some of their oil pan gasket kits.

Agree, have a selection of bolts with heads removed to use for both auto and pinsetter cover alignment issues.
An old retired mechanic, now in his 70's, taught me a trick for O-rings and seals. If you want them to stick so a surface like around that oil passage and are afraid they'll fall out on install, use either a bit of grease or a bit of Vaseline on the seal. Since those products are oil based they'll break down in the oil with no ill effects, and they'll allow the seal or O-ring to stick like they're glued in place until you get it put together.

This weekend im replacing wifes oil pressure sensor, valve cover gasket, cleaning maf sensor and throttle body.
Between our two cars Ray has helped me save over 6000 dollars in labor costs at the garage.

The cause of this is endemic to women. It is called FDA. Female Disappearing Act. When you are out with your wife somewhere, if you take your eyes off her for one second, look back....`poof' she's gone. She will then appear from another direction and give you Royal rooty toot for wandering off. It is truly terrifying. I try to stay at home much of the time.
People forget that these videos involve real work done at a real repair shop, not a hobby. Which means there are real customers, paying their hard earned money to fix their car, not to offer us entertainment. We can't expect them to pay extra so that we can see this or that.

With aluminum you might consider digging at things like those O-rings with toothpicks, and plastic hooks instead of steel O-ring picks. Also using plastic ice scrapers to scrape old sealant instead of metal tools. I just use one of those free (from Lowes or Home Depot) wood paint stirring sticks.
No matter what else happens that Subaru is getting the best oil change it's ever had

Use a dab of grease on your orings to keep them from falling out. While i understand why someone would say pull the engine and do an engine reseal. I find it amusing that they assume the customer has unlimited funds to do such things. Great videos have a great day!
Just a trick I learned years ago. Cut the heads off of a couple bolts the same size and thread them in the top holes . Set the front cover on the bolts and slide the cover to its home.
I was a general contractor for 35yrs and I always had people come and said that’s not the way we did it up north but out of respect I would let it just go even though I wanted to tell them to go back up north..

Mechanics are different.
My mechanic told me it is fine to wash your engine with a regular garden hose, never use a pressure washer.
Water may seep into covered electrical circuits and cause problems later on due to corrosion, etc. .
I do enjoy watching you work but for the life of me can’t explain why I watch you do a car I don’t own. Keep doing them I like watching.
It is amazing how people think you should remove the engine or replace the head gasket. It is so easy to judge when the work doesn’t come out of your pocket.

That is WHY I'll go to a decent mechanic to get my car repaired. Ray knows what he's doing and makes it look simple to us lay people. The amount of tools he has on hand to do a plethora of different tasks, must have cost in itself a small fortune.

I think that's the reason why Ray struck out on his own and doing so well, One thing I've noticed with Ray and that is his attention to detail in his work. You can see he prides himself in doing it right the first time. Makes me think of how many mistakes he must have made while being an apprentice. I'm sure though that he does his research before tackling some jobs.
You talking about the pressure washer trigger failing reminded me of my hunter safety course I had to take before I could get my first hunting license when I was a teenager 35 years ago. The instructor drilled into our heads that a gun safety is a mechanical device that can sometimes fail. He was a great safety instructor that was very serious about gun safety. As everyone needs to be.
The amount of time you guys have to take to preempt and counteract the keyboard warriors is phenomenal. It seems some people only watch CZcams to "critique" what they see in negative fashion.
Brake cleaning the Timing Cover just confirms Degreaser is much better suited for that purpose.
I enjoyed the Subaru timing cover leak repair video. You are very patient and careful. On another note…The Faux Cobra is getting really dusty in your shop. I think you should cover the car with the car cover it had on when it was towed in.
You got the right stuff on that right ray my go to sealer nothing else comes close I can't beleive they don't sell a gasket for it it's all glue now and you wonder why engines all leak at 50,000. Miles

A note to all you Subaru "experts" out there, the engine with the head gasket issues was the EJ series, which was discontinued almost a decade ago. the replacement engines (FA and FB) do not have head gasket issues.
Yet !!!
Watch Part 1. Owner had already replaced the head gaskets.
The basement warriors gotta keep on trying, I guess. 12 years of no head gasket failures on FB engines, but hey, let's guffaw about an ancient issue limited to EJ 2.5 SOHC. Okay -- haw haw.
Yup, 2010 or thereabouts was when the switch was made to low tension piston rings byjust about all manufacturers. Toyota had a hell of an oil drinking problem, all now forgotten by the armchair experts, because, Toyota.
The FA and FB do have head gasket leaks and where sealant is used. The FA and FB have updated head gasket designs.
Why couldn't the previous shop find this? Trying not to go into a higher tax bracket?

It wasn't done correctly the first time.
Plain and simple.
You cannot use the original coated gaskets for the repair, you just have the sane problem.
You must use the MLS gaskets from the turbo cars and six cylinder cars.
Why Subaru didn't do this in these engines is a mystery to me.

They blow out because they were single layer with coating. The remedy is MLS gaskets like on their turbo cars.

Subaru engine assembly plant has robotic arms that apply the sealant, so that every one has the same amount of sealant, so they do not leak during warranty period.
Ray obviously needs cyberpunk arms for RTV application. Never get tired holding em above you shoulders too! Think of the possibilities! Then holographic repair manuals in cyber eyes. Idk maybe Ray WOULD go for it just for the novelty and scifi.

FB engine, had the cover off, customer should have had you do a timing chain/water pump because you are right there. They are going to regret not doing it.
FB engine. The first FA was direct injection/port injection fitted to Scion FR-S and BRZ, arrived in mid 2012. Yup, the FB arrived before the FA.
FA had a timing belt. FB has timing chain and water pump is external and driven by serpentine belt so no need to pull the cover to change.
FA uses a chain as well, both F are very similar to eachother, you are thinking of the EJ @@beefeekeefee

I always put a little grease in the o-ring grooves. It helps hold the o-rings in place and lets things slide into place easier upon reassembly.

2006 2wd with 2.7l engine. Its had a small oil leak on the timing cover that started just after warranty ran out. Took it in for an estimate on what it cost to fix it. The dealer told me it would cost $2500 and they would need 3 days to fix it. Needless to say I didn't have them do it. That was years ago so I imagine it costs a .ot more. The thing about doing the job is the timing chain cover connects/seals at the bottom to the oil pan.
And it seals at the top to tthe valve cover. You can't do the job correctly unless you reseal the oil pan to remove the oil pN you have to pull the engine out of the truck because a frame cross that run under the oil pan.
You had an easy job on the car you worked on. 😊😊😊

I have used those tips before (the tornado tips) and I have to say that the one you have is significantly smaller than the one I used. They are still dangerous like you said. But I can say that you are right and you have a effective area that you have to stay in. I used one that was 4500 psi and 5100 rpm (professional grade) and used it on diesel island concrete pads at a truck stop.

Good job Ray you got us again, after you lowered the car the oil pan Bolt was not back in and you never showed yourself putting it back in then you filled it up with oil which could’ve ran right back out into the oil pan bucket and then blown up the engine but nope you put it in while we were not looking
Ray, I'm not a mechanic. Hell, I'm not even much of a DIYer outside of oil changes and basic maintenance, but I love watching your videos. I've learned a ton and you've given me confidence enough to move beyond routine maintenance.
I'll be replacing the oil cooler lines on my 20 year old Tahoe soon, and if I can muster up the courage to drop the front differential, I'll be replacing the oil pan gasket and pickup tube o-ring while I'm at it.

Subahoo engines haven't changed much since the 90's, used to do a lot of Subahoo engine repairs, mainly leaking valve covers and timing chains. Also got really good at swapping turbos on them.
It's the little things when you said 86.2 percent I just thought that was awesome. I love the ethics, attitude, work, etc. I was trying to tell my 8 year old how awesome it is watching these videos, she agrees.

The Right Stuff is the good stuff. The only time it ever failed on me was sealing an Austin Healy 3000 rear engine plate, and it only failed because the rear cover plate was shaped like a Pringle. It wasn't obvious to the naked eye.
Looked like a damn fine job to me, Ray. Well done. The gormless Subie techs who couldn't fix my evap issues on my Legacy GT, I dumped for an indie guy -- his schtick was turboing Subie engines to the limit. But he at least knew his way around Subies -- made things look like a cakewalk.
Dealers are the service people to avoid in general, I think.

Hi Ray. I am in South Africa and dealers and service centers refuse to presure wash (or even hose down) engines. Tjey claim it may damage electronics like the vehicle computer. I would imagine that these units are properly sealed an should not be affected. What is your take on this. I love your channel and wish we had someone like you close by.
I've often wondered why mechanics don't take pictures of the serpentine routing before they take the belt off. The first time I had a belt failure , the belt was still hanging on the stationary pulleys,s so no clue to how it was routed. A mechanic that was handy ( not just knowledgeable , but actually present as well ) had no clue either but knew there was another unit with the same engine and we copied that. I drew a picture of the routing in the owner's manual on the page that dealt with related repairs for the next time the belt failed, and in the next 700,000 klms, that happened twice.

I know you work on a lot of different vehicles but I found that getting the right size bolts, cutting the heads off and hand screwing them in as guide pins makes things a lot easier. I did that with my Dodge aftermarket transmission cover. That cover reinstall would have been easier if you had bolts you could hang it on while putting it in place.
Thank you for giving your customers the white glove treatment. I can tell you, I don't know many mechanics who wash up your car after working on it. If I lived in Florida I would definitely take my car to you for any maintenance or repairs.
Up here in Ontario we actually still have coin operated car washes. I find they do a better job than the "touchless" washes here especially in the winter it pays to have the precision to clean your undercarriage of salt.
you can even wash your mats and even your pet. They usually have a pet wash in the same building.
Best coolant funnel if you use the correct fittings for it to work correctly. I also like the vacuum tool to fill the radiator and block.

There are torque specs for those cover bolts, pulley bolts and crankbolt.
OCD Ray forgot to show us the letters on the belt before installing it. Have to see that the letters are facing the proper way.
I hate doing anything on faith, but we'll have to go with "In @RainmanRaysRepairs We Trust" this time 🤣
I looked closely at the belt and I believe the letters have worn off.
Those long arms are a blessing but sometimes a pain in the butt. Nice work.
I was watching this video and you mentioned "blowing out" the block to clean it from debris. I was thinking why not use Brake Kleen to degrease and clean the block. Then I got to thinking now you have contaminated the oil in the block with the Brake Kleen. I was thinking why not use alcohol, isopropyl or methanol as a cleaning agent. The alcohol will remove the oil and grease, as it breaks that stuff down, and then leave you with clean areas in which to place your gaskets. Using the alcohol would have saved you and oil change. Only meant as a helpful suggestion and food for thought!
I used a tip like that to clean my driveway, the found the proper tool.

What I don't like about the sealant method is the short time available before the stuff starts to set (work time). Gaskets don't have that issue. Thanks for the video.

Just did this one, couple of items, possibly not necessary but I, just to be sure, put rtv around the bolt holes on the outside edge of the cover as well. I also tighten all the bolts just past finger tight then to 5 ftlbs. the next day. To give the rtv a chance to set up a bit to help ensure some stays in the joint.
