    When I started in the Machining field 30 years ago, one of the senior Machinists(William King RIP 🙏) used to work in the railroad repair industry as well as his Father doing Steam engine repair before him. He used to always use that phrase. When I questioned him about it, he stated his father used the term to make note of how clean the steam whistles were internally when they took them off for restoration. His Dad used to say he never had to clean or re machine any steam whistles internally. He only ever had to regrind or polish the outside because the inside was steam cleaned its entire life. Henc, the "clean as a whistle" ! This was a bit of knowledge he handed down, but man, he had an absolutely limitless amount of machining knowledge. Most of which I still use today. I miss picking his brain and think about him on the regular. Now I'm the old guy and I try my damndest to share knowledge I've learned, but I'll never be as versed as he was about machining and being a all around decent person.

    Watching you do this cleaning with ground up walnut shells jogged my memory of an incident involving using walnut shells for cleaning and the crash of a United States Army Chinook helicopter. This illustrates the use of extreme care in the use of this stuff.
    "On 11 September 1982 at an airshow in Mannheim, Germany, a U.S. Army Chinook (serial number 74-22292) carrying parachutists crashed, killing 46 people. The crash was later found to have been caused by an accumulation of ground walnut shell grit used for cleaning machinery, which blocked lubrication from reaching transmission bearings.The accident resulted in the eventual discontinuation of the use of walnut grit as a cleaning agent."

    Ray...that is absolutely amazing. I have a turbo GDI engine (EcoBoost) that is notorious for carbon buildup. A local shop that I trust is quoting me something like 8 hours of labor for that same service. The engine is not suffering yet. I am considering this as a DIY project for down the road. The only issue I have is that with a transverse mounted V-6, the far 3 cylinders are most likely a pain to get to. Maybe removing the cowl would do it. So far, Ford has no answer other than induction service that they actually don't recommend for the EcoBoost. The reason is hydrocarbon-based induction services can cause the turbos to overheat and possibly lead to damage.

    I agree 100% on the EV discussion, Ive been saying they wont solve the pollution issues ever since the lawmakers or whatever you wish to call them decided we should go all EV. One of my concerns was how they would deal with the 'dead' batteries once swapped out for a good battery. It took them yrs n yrs to work out how to have safe and how to recycle regular AA etc batteries. And those batteries were simply going into landfill for decades. Ever since I saw a video of some guys making a hydrogen power motor bike last year I thought this was the best way forward to help reduce our carbon footprint etc

      If that's what you think, you don't get around in EV circles, or rather, anti-EV-mandate circles, all that much.
      Because I, and many others, have known about what actually happens for at least a decade now. Way I see this is, with the pollution aspect, it's become the technological version of NIMBY. And when that happens, it always gets shoved near areas where the poor and working classes live. This is no different than landfills and power plants when I was growing up, and it'll be no different than the ULEZ-style fees and scheme taking place in New York City, where Manhattan is essentially being priced out from the poor being able to even visit the island, having a $15/day fee just to go on to the island.
      As a result, people are complaining that doing so just moves the pollution into areas and boroughs where kids are, thus it is affecting their health.
      ULEZ is a scheme in London, England, UK, whereby people with cars of various ages pay to go into certain zones, and can't go into some zones deemed Ultra Low Emission. ULEZ stands for Ultra Low Emission Zone, and is a scheme whereby Londoners have to pay roughly $15 USD, £12 50pence, to go into certain areas of London. An old enough car, and you can't enter some areas of London at all. For workers, this means paying £80 per week, roughly $100 USD, just to go to work. And people have been protesting this scheme for a few years now, with a group calling themselves the Blade Runners going so far as to disable and/or destroy the cameras ULEZ depends on.
      And now New York City is doing the same thing here.

      @isaiahwelch8066 Před měsícem

      @@michaelpressman7203 : I wasn't talking about mass transit, or anywhere else in the state, since the scheme in London and NYC being done, ULEZ, has to do with private car ownership and use.
      Essentially, these schemes are de facto licensing schemes that are unconstitutional, since cars have been a common conveyance for the last 110 years, and this scheme in NYC essentially violates the liberty of locomotion people have with their own cars and using them.
      The goal of ULEZ is to economically make car ownership and use so prohibitive that, ironically, only the rich and well-to-do can afford a car and all of the fees and bureaucratic red tape that goes along with them -- thereby forcing the poor and working class people on to mass transit, and therefore controlling the ability of the poor and working class to get around whenever they want.
      This same scheme was begun in London, with the same goals and objectives I just stated. Coupled with Saddiq Khan being part of C40 Cities, this is but the foundational groundwork to push the working class and poor into "15-Minute Cities" that will be nothing more than barless prisons, given the amount and kinds of 24/7 surveillance being planned and implemented. Because anyone who doubts this doesn't get it: The ULEZ cameras are _cameras_ -- which means not only are the whereabouts of people being tracked, but these cameras will all be wired together in the same network like what London already has. (If you've ever seen Fast 6, you know exactly what kind of surveillance center the UK has.)

    The PCV does leave a puddle in the intake on this gen Prius. Also the EGR cooler is likely the cause of "EGR FLOW BELOW THRESHOLD" and that needs replacement as well to make this repair effective. It could probably be blasted if the walnut is fine enough as it just gets packed 100% full of carbon. There's also a recalibration in the related TSB that supposedly reduces EGR clogging. I did mine recently and improved the mileage ~14% on average without any "Prius driving habits," so to speak.

Coal fired also emits more radiation than nuclear- but the ooga booga is strong. We need nuclear fission, channelized hydroelectric (IE not big dams, but river/tidal channel generators), solar, geothermal, and finally fusion to be the primary sources of power instead of LPGas or Coal.

    Ray, you're right about the power consumption. We have that same problem here due to an aging power grid.
    Put it this way: Either last year or the year before, I read about a town of 50,000 people having a local trucking company wanting to convert a fleet of 30 trucks. After talking to the utility supplying power to the town, it was found that those 30 trucks would take as much power to charge as the entire town would use in one day. After finding this out because the utility said they had no ability to double their power capacity, the trucking company was unable to convert to a pure EV fleet.
    That being said, Japan is one of the few nations that also has a pure electrical railroad fleet and network, AND after the Fukushima disaster, decided to de-commision all 6 of its nuclear power plants, given the efficiency of Chinese coal-fired power plants.
    All of these things play into the EV debate, given Japan does not use diesel-electric railroad locomotives on its rail lines at all, unlike the US, which has tried to electrify the rail network in the past, and it has always been too expensive to build and maintain. It happened in the early 1900s, it happened in the 1960s. Electrifying railroading is too cost-prohibitive to work.

    • @stevewhite3424

      I don't know where you're getting your information about Japan shutting down "all 6 of its nuclear reactors" as they actually had 48.but it is some kind of deliberate missinformationtion coming from the anti-nuclear lobby. Even the tiniest bit of research would tell you that Japan currently has restarted. 12 reactors and has permit requests to restart 15 more. And has 2 more under construction.
      As far as using Chinese coal is concerned, the vast majority of the generating power in Japan following the initial shutdowns was LNG and with the restart of existing reactors, they reduce their importation of LNG significantly.
      So to summarize, Japan is not shutting down. It's 6 reactors. It is restarting a total of 27 current reactors, and Japan never used cheap Chinese coal to make up the loss of nuclear generating power after the Fukushima accident. They used LNG.

    • @imrf
      @imrf Před měsícem

    Respect your opinions on electric cars Ray, and I'm far from an electric fanatic: it's currently a very flawed technology and not the panacea many think it is. But there are two flaws in the argument you provide that need addressing.
    First, even if the energy efficiency were equivalent, you can get more effective environmental controls in a large facility, even a combustion plant, than you can in a bunch of little mobile combustion plants. They can just be made cleaner and better for the environment for the same amount of power generation.
    Second, internal combustion engines just are not an efficient way of producing power. Off the top of my head a modern gas engine has only about 30% thermal efficiency -- 70% of the energy that goes into it is wasted, a good chunk of that as emissions. Even a coal-fired power plant, one of the most polluting, has an energy efficiency of I believe around 60%, much less wasted effort, much less byproduct in the environment.
    Which pretty much means that, from an energy conservation point of view, it *would* be a net win to have a fully electric fleet. However, you are 100% correct that there are a lot of infrastructural reasons why that can't happen now and probably won't happen for a long time. There are also very ethical worries about the conflict metals that currently go into batteries. Doesn't mean it's not a goal we should approach, though, even if we never fully let go of our lovely dino-burners.

    • @robjones3818
      @robjones3818 Před měsícem +1

      @@user-tf3ir8sc5m I have, and that's why I went to pains to note that I was talking mostly from an energy-efficiency perspective, which was the thrust of Ray's argument.
      The environmental effects of rare earth mining (and the ethical implications of making heavy use of conflict metals) are another facet of the discussion entirely, though one worth having for sure.

    • @user-tf3ir8sc5m
      @user-tf3ir8sc5m Před měsícem

      I do agree that by definition, a 4 stroke engine can only be 25% efficient (excluding physics). It only produces power on 1 out of 4 strokes. Add to that, friction and thermal loss, and yes, it is not the most efficient engine. However; gasoline is a tremendous energy store vs. weight. Batteries aren't even in the same galaxy. Even when empty, you still have to push around a 1000 pound battery. When a gas tank is empty, it's empty.

    • @user-tf3ir8sc5m
      @user-tf3ir8sc5m Před měsícem

      @@robjones3818 Agreed. I just think that when you combine the production aspects of the batteries, lack of infrastructure to charge, the fact that the only change in carbon is the source; a coal fired plant vs. a tailpipe. Nuclear is the way to go on electrical production and that does not address grid distribution, charging stations, or the batteries themselves. I'm not an EV hater, I think instant torque is awesome, the tech will get better. I just don't think it is the long term solution when everything is taken into account. The gasoline based infrastructure has taken over a century to build, we don't have the resources to replace it overnight, and it wouldn't be economical to do so even if we did.....Now hybrids on the other hand; best of both worlds. Can certainly be plug-in.

    Walnut blasting at one time was a method to clean gas turbine blades. It worked OK but it destroyed the non metal seals. There are chemicals that do a better job but are expensive. Walnuts will pit soft metal surface like aluminium (Gasket face). Be sure to make sure you do not inadvertantly spray the valve stem seals.
