This video is not true presentation of Group B.
If you want to see real Group B video, you must check "Group B rally - tribute".
make one on the isle of man tt motorcycle race
In no way, shape or form was this the "Best of Group B". These were, for the most part, competing in a classic rally many years after Group B had been banned, and NOT going full send. At the height of Group B, the drivers were going flat out through a sea of spectators, in all weathers and times of day. Sun, rain, snow, ice and fog - there were no limits.
You need to find a more contemporary video to see just how good these drivers were. Try this one, as it explains what it was all about with some spectacular footage from the time.
czcams.com/video/pPk90JZqWM8/video.html
Or this one: czcams.com/video/rwOiGqp2LDU/video.html ist's about THE legend of group B Walter Röhrl there you see also his "foot work"
@@dirk9448aaa.. yes.. she is really going to love when the raley cars do the Moses impression.
Anti lag my girl
What he said. Group B was when sex was safe and racing wasn't. The footage from that period is just mental.
Yeah in this video they are rarely even driving in full anger these things. Group B monsters are scary as fuck when they all out attack on a stage. This video's driving was more like "I better be careful not to break this priceless classic!"
Walter Röhrl was one of the best Group B pilots back in the 80´s
Sorry to say , he was not one of the best , he is still the best .
Michèle Mouton with the Audi Quattro, a french woman pilot ❤
Henry Toivonen was the really best, one of the few who could handle the Delta S4
@@ep2560 jepp, thats what i wanted to say too.
@@clmM29As soon as I saw the main comment I knew there’d be a Michele simp in the replies lmao
In Europe lot of high-end performance cars are marketed as Rally. Part of the rules is that the manufacturers must produce and sell a certain number of these cars to be allowed to race them. Rally has done a lot for safety, breaking and especially suspension.
Right car models:
2:38 Lancia Rally 037
3:32 Peugeot 205 T16 (fun fact, while it is a hatchback the engine is in the middle)
3:44 Lancia Delta S4 (fun fact, the engine is also in the middle and it is both turbocharged and supercharged at the same time making it have around 480-500 horsepower)
3:56 Lancia Stratos
5:00 Audi Quattro group B (also known as the "urquattro" or original quattro)
5:36 Renault 5 Turbo (more of these hatchbacks with the engine moved to the middle)
5:48 MG Metro 6R4 (the reason why so many hatchbacks in group B had the engine in the middle was weight distribution, but a problem that occured is that these cars became very twitchy due to having very short wheelbases)
6:56 Renault 5 Turbo 2
9:06 again that is a Lancia Stratos but this time with its original and most famous livery (atleast I think its the most famous)
Wife and I between us have both the S4 and the Integrale. Admittedly, with some substantial work done.
Superior tyres, brakes, suspension, exhaust. And some small but decent engine refinement.
Both are still in close to mint condition.
(In New Zealand).
At 5:00 is a Audi Sport Quattro S1E2
@@KarILsson You're 100% correct!
At 8.14 there is the so called "Ur-Quattro".
7:06 I think its more like the maxi or not ?
@@Aleduty04 alright yeah i see that
The whistle in the audis are caused by the wastegate, this is a device to release the pressured air from the turbo charger, this is why when he slows down that whistle, that serves to prevent any damage from the overpressured air in the turbo or the engine
its aqtualy a turbo charger with no wastegate that makes that sound (turbo-fluter) its the pressured air that bumps on the closed butterfly valve and returns true the turbos impeller
so when a turbo has a wastegate it doesnt make that sound?@@tomweuts
@@Afther indeed otherwise every turbo car from factory should make this sound u can actualy hear the impeler slowing down if u listen closley
this vid explains it quite good
czcams.com/video/BFXIgME_5UA/video.html
@@Afther With a wastegate, we would hear a continuous whistle sound. Some cars did it in this video.
@@tomweuts It does have a Wastegate, what it doesn't have is a "Blowoff Valve", that's what you were trying to say i think
Walter Röhr is very popular. He is now 76 years old and still drives the Nürburgring sometimes, mostly to take reporters with him and scare them.
Quotes from him include:
“Good drivers have fly residue on their side windows.”
“I won’t wear a helmet for anything over 8 minutes on the Nordschleife (Nürburgring)!”
“When accelerating, the tears of emotion must flow horizontally towards the ear.”
“A car is only fast enough when you stand in front of it in the morning and you are afraid to unlock it.”
“If you see the tree you're driving into, you're understeering. If you just hear it, you're oversteering."
“Take out the roll bar for me! I want to test Porsche, but I don’t want to drive on the roof!”
You need to watch " Group B: When Rallying Got TOO FAST " for a better understanding, it's mental, there were a (french) woman competing men (Michèle Mouton), work in Audi Quattro. Even for drivers, Group B was too dangerous (and deadly).
Def
the stages are closed for trafic during the race (mind you that doesn't mean you can not run into somebody 😄) and they go trough forests, towns, villages, at night, in rain, snow, or all together combined 😋
Or a cow, as happened on a Corsican rally
@@johnleonard9090 it was actually Sardinia Rally, they don't do Tour de Corse anymore
This was a professionalprofessional race. The people can stand really close. That's part of the excitement. There is a passenger reading notes telling him what's coming up like turns jumps gravel
Hell yes! Also check out one of the biggest stars of Group B, Michèle Mouton.
Sadly this was after Group B was abandoned. There are some crazy videos out there. Many of the greats came from Northern Europe: Finland, Norway. We had some decent ones here in the UK. The late, great Colin McRae was a monster.

Sure... in the middle of a Rally racing is the bus coming. 😂🙋🏻♂️
a good youtube video to watch on group B which answers a few of the questions you have,is" group B when rallying got too fast" well worth your time.
The whisle of the Audi Quattro (all wheels drive) we heard is from the turbo (to give more air and power to the engine, first rally car to use this technology). The cute car 🚗 😁 is a Renault 5 turbo. The looking futuristic car is not a a Ferrari, it’s a Lancia Stratos and the hood looking car all red is a Lancia Delta. All theses were also (commercial) produced to the public but collectors today, for example the Audi Quattro is over $1m now and rally version over $1.5m.
Válvula de descarga
9:09 that is a Lancia Stratos, one of the most legendary Italian Group A rally cars ever made. It sounds like a Ferrari because it was powered by a Ferrari 2.5L Dino V6 that put out about 230 HP. It was styled by Bertone (famous design studio) and made by Lancia, and they are extremely capable little rally rockets
Actually, the Stratos was a Group 4 car, not Group A. The Delta HF Integrale was Lancia's Group A car.
So true! The few ones left are also worth a gazillion of dollars.
If you drive up in one of those you steal any show from anyone...
Turbo best for straight line, super charger can charge up without natural build up. Your knowledge and interest for racing is infective and you're way better than 90% of the men reacting to rally sports.
Group B was a class in rally, but it was banned long ago for being too dangerous. What you just watched was group B cars being driven in modern times and as a result rather safely because these are all priceless legacy cars at this point. Not the best video to see a rally spectacle or to see what group B was all about and what made it so dangerous.
9:10
Lancia Stratos one of the most beautiful cars that have ever competed😍, and there are also Ferraris and Porches competing in classic rallies.
9:06 To answer your question, that would be a Lancia Stratos HF, which was built and homologated to compete under the Group 4 formula in the 1970s. The reason why it sounded like a Ferrari is that it actually used a Ferrari engine, particularly the V6 from the Ferrari Dino.
9:41 driver and navigator ... the navigator reads to the rider what curves await him how sharp they are plus other instructions that allow him to ride so fast
The "sutututuu" sounds are from the turbo's blow of valve and turbos are useful for easy and trustworthy power
The sound on the Audi is turbo sound
This was a show race 30 years after the end of group B. Watch the old videos
Those were not superchargers, they were Turbos. The way they work is slightly different but the both boost power.
Most of these cars were from the mid 1980's. They were 500 horse power, 4 wheel drive, lunatic machines that would do 0 to 60 mph in under 3 seconds on ANY road surface!!This was a 'Historic' rally where privately owned cars from that era are raced for the pure pleasure and nostalgia of it all.
This is type of racing is HUGE in Europe and safety is regulated just as strictly as F1 and Nascar if not more so hence the helmets, race suits and roll cages.
Each section of the race is referred to as a 'Stage'. The Co-Driver uses a code system to describe each corner for it's tightness, width and distance to the next corner after it. You could possibly react to some 'In Car' videos to see how crazy these guys were.
The street stages are normally closed to the general public to keep everyone safe and are organised months in advance so no kids or school buses were harmed.
That 'chirping' sound from the Audi is the huge amount of back pressure from the turbo trying to escape. It has become the signature sound for that particular car.
That 'Pretty Little' white one you saw (7:14 in the video) is a Renault 5 Turbo. Think Chevy Spark with 350 horse power and a seriously bad attitude.
At 9:09 it's a Lancia Stratos not a Ferrari.
At 13:00 it's an MG Metro 6R4, Another really small car with a ridiculous engine in it. Those holes on the sides are because the engine is mounted in the trunk and the holes are the air intakes for the engine.
With Group B Rally drivers it was always said the unofficial logic the drivers worked to was 'Flat Out and Sideways', 'Flat Out and Airbourne' or 'Flat Out and Both'!
Audi S1 is a legendary 5 cylinder 80s rally car.. Also turbo charged, not supercharged.. The chirrup sound is the waste gate venting excess boost.. ‘Some’ of overrun bangs are anti-lag to keep the turbo spinning at high rpm.. which reduces lag when getting back on the power.. (Google anti-lag) 😄
I literally bought 2 x Mk2 Ford Focus ST’s and a Mk2 Focus RS for the 5 cylinder engine! 😎💥👊🏼
The Group b rally era took place between 1982-1986 and was a class of rally cars where some of the cars reached 550 bhp at less than 2300 lbs during the last 2 years.
Some of the cars really took advantage of the few rules that existed at the time,
Wide body kits, turbos, superchargers 4wd, mid engines and big wings light weight materials where all allowed and only 200 cars where needed to be produced compared to other classes that had to produce many more than that.
Accidents happened more and more because of the speed of the cars and the lack of crowd control so they had to ban them in 1986.
That Audi doesnt have a supercharger, its a turbo.
group B was wild, they had almost no track limits like in F1 is "the track limit is that white line" in Group B was "the track limit are the people and that cliff, maybe those trees too"
dakar is like "limits? how cute"
The white car at 7.08 was the Renault 5 turbo. The regular base model was sold in the USA as the Renault Lê Car for a short time.
As many others commented already: most of these clips ain't from Group B Era, which were the 80's. The crazy times of rally. The "supercharger" is actually the blow-off from the turbocharger.
I very well may be incorrect but i think that at least one Group B car had turbo and supercharger, but i may misremember.
Anyway. The "Ferrari" is a legend in rally racing: the Lancia Stratos. But I gotta say that my personal favourite Group B car is the Lancia Delta Integrale S4.
And since these cars are all quite "old" they weren't driven at their maximum, because no one wants to risk breaking them for real.
Also: usually the driver and the co-driver drive the down the stage before the actual race and the driver gives the co-driver the input about which infos he wants to have where and when. so the stage-infos actually come from the drivers themselves, afaik.
Favour you should watch the best in car footage from rally races and that will give you a good idea of how fast and skilled these drivers are
5:30 you always need more power to exit the corners. The turbo gives you that, The noise is the waste gate from the turbo.
7:20 You now it a Renault LeCar ('80 in USA). In EU Renault 5
Imagine that in the 80s , some pilots says that they found fingers and toes in their car. Safety at this period was stupid because of the speed of these cars .
The little stutuu noise is from a turbocharger that serve around the same purpose then a supercharger but differently
These crowds were crazy here but childs play compared to the racing in the 80s. Mechanics would literally find fingers and hair in the engine compartments after races. Like running of the bulls but cars
They run turbos on rally cars, but for a good reason. Most rally stages are high altitude locations, and with high altitude you have less oxygen in the air. The turbos compress as much air as it can and force it in the engine. It makes up the power loss for being in high altitude.
my boss is an ex rally champion, he also owns Hannu Mikkola' audi quattro. the amount of cool rally cars i get to see while at work is crazy
Couple of insightful, thoughtful and even beautiful videos about rallying made by Antti Kalhola: "Rally: The Great Adventure" and "Ari Vatanen - The Poet of Rallying". Let's say these are rally pit stops: "Rallying In Finland, Fast Rally Fans Part 1". Rally clips with different car brands: "Rallying In Finland 2021 By JPeltsi". If you want to freak yourself out: "Crazy Finns Crashing - with pure crashing sounds".
The wistling sound you hear is the waste gate to the turbo charger, opening and letting out the excess boost.
Yay! You got round to Group B! It was absolutely mental……. In a great way.
This video you need to see... Group B:The Race That Killed Its Fans
In this video you get facts about group b rally and here you can see a little more real rally group b action how crazy it was with spectators...
Group B: When Rallying Got TOO FAST
That's just a show event look for "Walter Röhrl in his Audi Sport Quattro S1 - The most amazing onboard ride (Original Rallye Footage!)"
The wedge shaped one was a Lancia Stratos
the metro had the ducts down the side because it was rear engined, its the same engine that was in the jaguar xj220 road car.
There are always 2 in the car, the driver and the navigator that tell him all the upcoming corners and abstocals.
The little blue and white car with the scoop is a car made by the former british company rover who made the original mini as austin the vehicle you saw was called a metro the rally version prepared by MG was called the 6 r4
It's a turbocharger you're hearing, specifically the wastegate. It's letting out air when slowing down.
As a person who was involved in this sport you should know a few things:
1. Roads are closed and controlled by marshalls.
2. The navigator sits in the second seat and has a route book that lists all the corners and road conditions that he reads to the driver over an intercom.
3. The cars have roll cages for safety for the occupants and also strengthen the body.
6:50 That is a Renault 5 Maxi Turbo. In Spain we used to call it "Culo Gordo" (Fat Ass), a well known widowmaker. It was like a coffin with wheels...
Gaaaah! Having the video start with legacy and tribute events... Breaks my heart.
The whistling popping sound is a turbo charger the noise is caused from the excess air pressure being vented through a device called a Watergate and dump valve Porsche rallied in this era with a car called the 959the ferrari looking car is a lancia Stratos
World Rally Championship is very popular in the World. I am not sure did F1 driver Kimi Raikkonen took part of WRC. Thank you for nice video.
Group B was a special thing. They had very strong and light cars. It was kind of dangerous. And eventually it was closed.
The audi's are turbocharged, not supercharged.
btw. the little car you like is a renault 5 turbo 2, the normal version of the renault 5 was sold in the us as AMC "le car" around 1976.
btw2. the roads where a rally takes place are closed for public during the event so the drivers should not encounter any traffic.
the whistle you hear is the blow of valve from the Audi and it is a Turbo not a supercharger :)
This was just a Rally showcase, vintage cars being driven fast (well some of them) but not even close to the real thing back in the day
9:10 is a Lancia Stratus HF (cousin of Lancia Delta Integrale HF (gen I & II))
The Renaul was a Renault 5
the Audi is an Audi S1 Quattro(yes it have all wheels integrated transmission)
and in this video it´s the I5(5 cilinder in line)
with a supercharge (making around 600-640 HP)
i hope i could help you Favour Intencional.
5:00 in group B, most of the cars had turbocharged engines. although there were also addictive designs like the LANCIA DELTA S4, which had an engine with both a turbine and a supercharger.
You need to check it This Is Rally series on CZcams. It includes everything from crashes, big saves, huge jumps and all the crazy moments. This series really shows what rally is all about. And thay audi sound is because of turbo. These cars produced crazy hp out of the engines. There were even rumors that lancia could produce around 750hp at max potential. And talking about roll cages. They are required and a car can not enter the race without it. In the past companies tried to keep the cars as light as possible so they inserted cardboard roll cages and made it looks like metal. Not exactly safe.
Rally is more technical than you think. The one in the passenger seat must say, around 10 seconds before the what corner, if there’s a jump, any water. Imagine reading it all out whilst being thrown around.
Remember that group b was from 1983 to 1986, the safety regulations were not what they are now, those people like that are impossible now
I reilly like reactions...
The 'classic king' Audi Quattro🇸🇪🇸🇪
That Audi quattro S1 has a Turbo Charger.Thats why it's chirping through the Blow Off valve
Oh believe me.
A LOT of people got hurt in rally events. Especially in Group B, which was I think why it got canceled.
Salut ^^ 7:08 C'est une Renault 5 Turbo , c'est une voiture française, c'est elle qui a introduit "la technologie turbo" en rallye
The group b cars could have as much as 500plus brake horse power. The manufacturers in this era were lancia, Toyota, Peugeot, Audi, For, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Renault, and a small english Sports car company called MG
You should watch the video Driver61 did on Group B, where he explains everything about it really clearly
This video that you analize was record at the rally festival, called Rallylegend San Marino, at the country of San Marino. This rally is out of al the championships, is a diferent rally, is a festival
Group B was cancelled in World Raly Championship by FIA at 1986
I could be mistaken but, I think this is the B class, which got discontinued due to safety concerns? Supercharger is the term for their version of turbo and supercharger which both compress air into the cylinders to combust faster. Turbo is for once the engine gets turning and producess exhaust (which turns the turbo fan blades) and the supercharger is turned by the engine belts, to make up for the lag when no exhaust comes out to turn the turbo. Ur beautiful by the way.
\O>
What you thought was a Ferrari Is a Lancia O-37, one of the greatest Group B rally cars ever created.
Fluttering sound that Audi makes is turbocharger blow off valve sound. Supercharger goes wEEEEEEEE and turbo goes STUTUTU :D
That slide they do. It's actually known as the Scandinavian flick
Carlos Sainz jnr is in F1 right now (Ferrari) and his Dad was a very very successful Rally driver
Another thing, you may be interested in, the isle of man tt. The oldest and most exciting motorsport event in Europe. I recommend "Mark Higgins POV Isle Of Man TT Run In 2016 Subaru WRX STI", withe the commentary of the driver. Very interesting and insane driving skills.
One of the best group B/rally drivers was a female Michelle Muoton was an absolute beast of a driver. A lot of what your seeing here is auto cross with cars severely tuned down not the full blooded 600hp monsters
These are not period footage, the drivers in theses videos are being a lot more careful than they'd be back in the 80s when Gr.B was alive.
It's a completely different thing driving a classic race car with limited replacement parts and infinite historical value
14:22 it6´s an PEUGEOT 206 T16(and have a road-use version the 205 T16 looks similar but for the crowd can drive and carry friends and groceries)
Renault (5) and Peugeot (205)are french cars ;-). I haved 1 R5 Alpine Turbo and 1 205 GTI 130cv. Very good memory :-)
The white watchback its a Renault 5 Maxi Turbo. Very good video, cheers from Argentina
On most performance cars it’s not the exhaust that makes the noise it’s the engine
10:40 les routes sont fermées à la circulation, donc pas de bus sur le tracé et chaque zone de l'étape est encadrée par des agents de course ^^
Easy connection for you to connect rally to f1, Carlos Sainz is a double world rally champion, his son is driving f1 today, Carlos sainz jr
Group b's rules:
Get the fastest car you can build, don't kill yourself n don't kill the public.
1. They are actually Group B vehicles, but there are also other rally cars here. Historically relevant.
2. This video only consists of, watch events.
3. Nobody in this video is driving at full throttle.
4. If you only mention it as part of the game: Audi can be seen historically in the video, then its value alone is not affordable.
5.Audi Sport Quattro S1 Group B auctioned for: 2 million euros.
6. Nobody would do or drive a real race with a car like this anymore
9:14 this is an italian Lancia Stratos with a Ferrari engine under the hood... they always made that with a Ferrari engine
10:48 indeed they closes the roads for public traffic just to make the route for the race. No one outside the pilots can drive and walk on that road untill the race is over
8:53 turbo, no supercharger :)
Group B was around for a short time in the 80s.
It was shut down is due to a fatal accident, see explanation and background czcams.com/video/96RpBK70H0I/video.html
An interesting Swedish CZcamsr who drives rally these days is Tim Liljegren at 16 minutes he says that there is something wrong with the steering and at about 19 minutes the accident occurs.

This is from some later show event because its not full tilt racing by far. You must go back to when they competed for real and your hart will go spinning 😂😂
yha this was race for fun whit group b rally cars or replicas, not the real one. you to see the video "wen rally went to fast" it explains the begining of group b rally and the end of group b
7:25 that's the Renault 5 turbo, featured in Dragon ball manga Vol.1 as Bulma's car, btw
I don't think this is a real Groupe B video. The quality of the recording, the drivers prestation, the cars... seems something like our days festival or celebration.
I forgot which driver it was who said that when driving through the crowd you couldn't think of them as human beings. To the drivers they were just bushes, rocks and trees you just have try not to hit.
5:39 Renault 5 Turbo or R5 Turbo, crazy thing only found out yesterday you did get the Renault 5 in the usa but sales were so poor it was the reason you did not get the Renault 5 Turbo the fast one with body kit.
Co driver is very important he instructs the drive when to turn etc etc
Group b was eventually banned after the tragic and horrendous death of A driver called Henri Toivonnen
if you want the craziest track its called pikes peak. You have to design a very special rally car to handle that track. Sébastien Loeb's Record Setting Run is a great video
The group B is from the past 80s. They race on closed roads, so there are no kids.
10:39... Naw, everythings shut down and the town or where it's being held is notified, it's all planned out and saftey teams are on standby...
The audi has a turbo charger not a supercharger the noise you are hearing when he slows down is the compressed air traveling through the turbo because the turbo compresses air to force more air into the engine and when the throttle body closes which happens when he takes his foot of the gas the left over compressed air in the charge pipe has nowhere else to go but back the way it came through the turbo. Normal cars dont have this they have a wastegate instead which sits between the turbo and charge pipe and opens to release the left over charged air. The pros of not having the wastegate is a much better throttle response and the noise and the reasons why its rarely used in road cars or not at all in a production car is that it apperantly decreases the life of the turbo charger. The audi also has an anti lag system which injects more fuel to keep the engine rpm in the boost zone so the turbo stays spooled up and you have full power and response and it makes the car shoot flames out the back the con to this again is it decreases the life of the turbo
