If you are in the crowd and get hit, then you have a memory that will last a lifetime. How long that lifetime is, depends on how badly you got hit.
Free Healthcare... that might be one of the disadvantages. We Europeans don't really care about safety. Fun is more important
😂😂😂
they were removing fingers from cars after races.
I lold mate :D
It’s spelled Peugeot because it is French 😂
Exactly. Maybe shocking, but other languages pronounce diffrent than english. Wtf...
Pösö😂
And is pronounced:
P-(vowel sound from "Earl" without the "r" at the end)-show (but with lowered pressure on the "sh-").
Turbo lag is the time it takes from losing turbo boost pressure (say when changing gear) and boost pressure re-established. Some turbos it is noticeable others it is small. "Anti Lag" system keeps the pressure (that's the ak47 sound you hear) not to be mistaken with the same sound some road cars make (done by tuning) called an "over run" or "crackle map"
It's also why you sometimes see flames from the exhaust. The over run allows fuel to be burned in the exhaust manifold and keep the turbo spinning even when the driver isn't pressing the gas pedal.
The sound is Turbo fluttering and its the backlog that brakes the Turbine from the Turbo .
The problem with the safety for the fans is it would be impossible. With F1 it is small (ish) tracks. But with rally it is upwards of 100km of public road per stage so there is no way they could add barriers for all of it. It's pretty safe now as there aren't so many spectators and it is run better. Also I'm pretty sure the cars are faster now than ever. But also much safer.
well they arent, the hybrid system does weigh a lot. not slow by anymeans
Not only the mileage per stage but the rally tournament itself has an annual calendar with each rally held in different countries, this would make it a logistical nightmare for H&S
Group A cars of the early 90s did faster stage times than the Grp.B cars, less power but much better suspension and handling@@Vemppu_Lutku
Nykyset wrc autot on todistetusti nopeampi kun group b autot, niissä on enemmän tehoa ja aerot on paljon kehittyneempiä. Tähän päälle vielä jousitus ja renkaat. Vaikkakin painavat parisataa kg enemmän@@Vemppu_Lutku
I was 14 when Henri and Sergio died. Attilio Bettega crashed his 037 just year before on Tour De Corse too, and died . I saw these cars live, it was a great time for a Finnish kid, we had so many great pilots on the era , Vatanen, Mikkola, Alen, Salonen,Kankkunen, all drove group B monsters ,but Henri was my hero .
And now you have Kalle
@@whocares47 Well, jeah .
About tyres in winter terrain: You have summer tires, then you have allround tires, then you have all season tires, after that you have European winter tires, then so called nordic winter tires, then you habe studded tires, after that you have rally winter tires. The grip difference between summer tires and nordic studded tires are miles away, then the jump between studded tires and rally winter tires are a universe in between!
18:45 I think by safety measures, you mean covering the tracks, with guards and fences all the way.
This is impossible! Rally is an event on public roads. It is a so called stage event. Each race is around 300-350 km, and usually has between 15-22 stages. Although most stages are raced twice in a rally event, it's still +150 km of public road, you'd need to fence!
A rally event is like this:
Race stage A.
drive on public road, to the next stage.
Race stage B.
drive on public road, to the next stage.
Race stage C
drive on public road, to the next stage.
Race stage A, B & C again, then continue with the next stages.
ALL is on public roads.
I had to laugh for "Persia". But honestly, no one outside France pronounces it correctly.
I had to laugh as well 😂, but you do realise there are millions of french speakers outside France? Right ? 😉
@@MotherGoose264 Excellent point =)
Many Finns drove for Peugeot. It still is pronounced "Pösö" here.
@@mikkomalinen2641 Or "Pökötti" =)
The correct pronunciation is "Those awful heaps of overcomplicated French nonsense."
Horsepower and light weight was a huge focus in many motorsports in the late 60s - late 80s.
The formula 1 cars of the same era pusched 1200 bhp in qualifying.
The late 60s and early 70s had Can-am,
Basically plastic prototypes with 800+ bhp as well.
Got the Porsche 917/30 out of the Can-Am series aswell, which I am pretty sure was the most powerful car in motorsport in qualifying trim alongside the 1500hp BMW M12 F1 powerplant.
Pretty absurd honestly.
Legendary driver Juha Kankkunen famous words: WRC is for boys, Group B was for men!
For Men & Michelle 🙈🤣
Modern rally races are actually faster than Group B was back in the day, since the cars are much more efficient and safe now, but rally has lost a lot of the wild crazy spectacle it had in Group B, since Group B was the fastest we could go with the 70s and 80s technology, making the cars more focused on raw power than finesse, with the drivers skill as the only safety feature.
It's very unfair to the brilliant engineers who built these machines to say that drivers skill was the only safety feature, they had a lot of safety features. But the 80's were 40 years ago so a lot of improved across the board.
@@volundrfrey896 what safety features? The fire extinguisher between the seats?
@@CordovanSplotchVT Roll cages (lancia missed that memo), harnesses, bucket seats, crash modeling, extreme material science, helmets, racing suits, fire walls, suspension advancements etc. Everything was hugely advanced during that period, not only due to group B but because of all the genius engineers working in motorsport.
Thats Ari Vatanen dodging the cow .
As someone who goes to rallys multiple times a year here in the Netherlands. Even with the safety precautions there are now you wil never find me watching on the outside of a turn. Even with the safety precautions taken in modern rally that risk is still to high. So on almost all corners on rallys here in the Netherlands they put signs in the ground saying no fans allowed.
The only female driver to ever drive in the world championship drove an Audi Quattro, she's a french woman named Michelle something, "the queen of speed" would be worth a reaction
Michelle Mouton
Always funny when people are so amazed about driving in snow. Its not that difficult. If you can drive dirt roads, loose gravel ect. snow and ice is no problem with good tires.
And they use studded tyres...
the fact: they found a lot of fingers from the engine bays of group B cars such like peugeot 205 t16 and lancia delta S4... just becase the people was too close and some even tried to touch the car while it was passing off.........
A duo of french youtubers were able to drive one a few years ago as well as a stratos. They pissed their pants driving it in a closed circuit. This thing was literally trying to kill'em.
Those days were insane, and not only the racing. I count myself lucky to have been in full bloom in the seventies and eighties.
I know it's just a video game, but "Richard Burns Rally" is considered to be the best rally simulator even after some 15 years or so, and driving group B cars there is ridiculous. They're super powerful, but near impossible to control. Driving modern WRC cars is a breeze in comparison, and thus you get way better times in the latter.
Good god. I'd forgotten all about that game!!
If you want to take a peek at some raw Group B footage the "Group B, The Sound" videos are breathtaking. No music, no no bs, no nothing. Just raw sound.
That Audi inline 5 is THE thing for me. It sounds so... I don't know, violent? But GOOOOOD!
@@Garbox80 the S1E2 it's my absolute favourite car, it is so dramatic, nothing is quite like it, and that inline 5..., that's unbeatable, makes the car feel like it's alive, like an animal.
Fun fact: After Group B was already cancelled, it was discovered that the cars were literally too fast for humans to drive on certain stages. The human eye focuses to different distances by slightly changing it's shape. And this takes time, fractions of a second, but still. With cars this fast on roads this winding, it was at times physically impossible for drivers to clearly see the scenery coming at them.
It was just the time of outstanding great drivers. Walther Röhrl, Michelle Muton, Hanno Mikulla.
That's odd, because WRC is actually faster, than Group B.
I'm calling bluff because today's WRC cars easily outperform 80's group B. The real problem was about how hard it was to drive these cars : every element (steering, brakes, suspensions) was too archaic for the engine power. Every 80's WRC car driver who had the opportunity to drive a recent WRC car is saying recent cars are really easy to drive, in addition to way shorter competition stages.
Exactly as the comment above!
Of the fastest rally events ever, all are WRC, and you have to go to the 21th place, to find a Group B event.
Now, this is still very impressive, but my assumption is, the fastest Group B were faster, in a straight line, whereas modern WRC1 cars have a top speed of ca. 200 km/h, but mostly use gearing, that lowers the top speed, to between 180-190 km/h.
But the WRC cars are faster through corners etc.
Turbo lag is essentially that a turbo has to wind up (build up pressure) to produce the full power. This means that turbo cars respond slower to throttle inputs compared to non-turbo cars. You also have the problem that the turbo generally produces most of it's power in higher revs, that can make turbo cars weak in lower revs. The sudden change in power from low revs to when the turbo kicks in in higher revs can also additionally be a drivability challenge, as it can lead to accidentally accelerating more than you intended to, which can lead to a snap of oversteer if you're in a corner.
Really enjoying your reactions to Rally! It reminds me of when I was growing up watching it too
there was something that was left out on the Joaquim Santos crash here in portugal. he lost control of the car trying to avoid a spectator that was too close to the road, which lead to the car losing its stability and the back end going left, leading the car into the spectators that were on the outside of the corner.
Fun fact: if you ever see something like this in person, always try to the on the inside of the corner, where it is safer
another fatality was in practice session for WRC rally Croatia this year - Irish driver Craig Breen (Hyundai i20 Rally1)
Rip Craig Breen
If spectators want to put themselves in danger, if drivers want to take that risk - then I don't see a problem.
Everyone who dies in the process knew about the dangers beforehand.
Next clip on the subject " Clarkson on Lancia vs Audi"
So sweet to see, how these things are touching you, and even after decades, it is still sad and horrible that these accidents happened. Was a pleasure to see your video, thanks for that! Best greetings from Germany.....
Because in the 80's we where much free as a society and didn't live in a bubble of false security. Freedom is counterbalanced by personal responsibility.
id go back to them times, much more freedom. id get rid some health and safety for extra freedoms
Henri was a very well liked and respected driver. And Sergio was considered to be a bit of a practical joker with a great personality. Henri had been I'll for a few days prior to the stage taking place and it is widely believed that the medication he was taking combined with fuel vapours from a small leak he had reported to the team that day combined to make him drowsy and disorientated and to start slipping into unconsciousness just prior to the accident. Sergio was not killed in the car as thought. But was thrown through the windscreen after his safety harness mechanism broke from the force of the sudden deceleration against the trees.
These are not dedicated tracks. WRC is happening on regular streets.
Rally drivers are not paid at all, maybe only the best ones make a profit. They do everything for fun and excitement. In F1, drivers earn millions of dollars per season. Definitely not here. And when it comes to wheel drive, before the introduction of Group B, rear wheel drive only was one of the main rules of rallying. Until Group B changed that.
@14:02 "I just hope people have insurance". Well, it's not the end of their world if they don't. Public healthcare may have a little longer queues for some inspections and treatments though.
cool video, great reactions!
peugeot is pronounced like pujo with the EU very similar to the U in sturdy, the J like in jail (if you leave the 'd' sound because jail is kinda pronounced like 'djail') and the O like in more
greetings from germany again.drivers and spectators knew the riscs!they took it!but in the end,it was too much!until today rally cars never reached that permormance again!
It is crazy, but modern cars are much faster than these monster Group B cars. Technology has advanced hugely.
It took few years to catch up but now they are way past group B. And a lot safer.
@@jukopliut I haven't followed rally closely for couple decades. Do you know when WRC overtook Group B?
@@koomaj Hard to say because you can measure it so many ways. Speed, acceleration, "Lap times" or what. For me WRC got better after 2000. Mitsubishi evo was old school and ford focus was new style. Nowadays these hybrids are again step closer to crazy with electric acceleration and high-tec handling.
@@jukopliut I think a good measure is average speeds at Finnish rally's absolutely crazy fast special stages.
hey dude, just found the channel. Loving it. this is what a reaction channel should look like 😛
unfortunately, at the same time, even F1 was barely starting to get into safety. Motorsport in genral as a very dangerous sport back then (it still is, but the risks are a lot lower now)
OK, I also have to link the last interview Henri Toivonen ever gave, 2 stages before the crash: czcams.com/video/OwgB4Xs4LVQ/video.htmlsi=Di2CZasBU3YMZNqg&t=14
It's in Finnish but it goes: "Henri: We are leading by 1:30 or 1:40, something like that. But I have to say this is a ludicrous race, we have been on stages for over four hours today, about the same time it takes to drive the entire 1000 Lakes Rally. In a modern car such as this one, its impossible to do a race like this.
Interviewer: Too much strain on your fitness?
Henri: Too much yeah, and I dont have the brains for this anymore."
turbo lag: basicaly a turbo works by take the exhaust throught a tubine wich the conects to an air pump via a crank shaft. If exhaust flows through the turbo the turbo spools up an sucks air into the engine. Normaly the turbo only funktions if the driver presses the throttle. This way the engine can produce more power. The time the turbo need to spool up is called turbo lag.
also this is really more of a 80's / 90's...probably 00's things modern turbo's are so small they have almost no lag and other advances in shenanigans to keep the thing spinning or spin up faster. generally a bigger turbo will produce more power but also have more lag and for regular cars you don't need/want a lot of power you want extra efficiency which a small turbo can help with (or to turn a horrible underpowered engine in to a passable one which I feel is most modern eco cars in a nutshell)
To simplify the "turbo Lag" thing they are talking about. You basically have two types of forced air induction to an engine, turbos and superchargers. Turbos take time to spool up a turbine because it harvests its energy from exhaust gasses from the engine, where as a supercharger is connected directly to the driveshaft by a belt. Superchargers will generally have better instantaneous power but lower top end power, and turbos have less immediate power but higher top end power. The lag basically refers to the time it takes to deliver that initial boost of power to the engine.
Take a look at videos of Walter Röhrl when he moved to Audi. The guy is a legend in rally.
You forget that Europe has social healthcare, so people aren't so hung up about injuries
Our social healthcare doesn't do us much good when someone has to peel our fingers out of a rally car's side air intake (Which happened for real back then)!
rally is the best! it is more safer for spectators to watch now. WRC Rally Chile starts next week!
Rally have done a lot to make cars more reliable. There is also quite abit of technology that was sort of introduced to the main stream via ralley. Its sort of a gatway of technology to be introduced.
Every year they could produce evolution model with only 20 road going versions . In 1986 Audi had some 600 bhps, Peugeot 550 and Lancia S 4 over 600 .
I used to go watching rallying live in the 80s . And i did saw the group b cars as well.
those things would do 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds. ON GRAVEL!!
Turbo works on exhaust fumes, if ur not reviving high then it’s not really doing much, that goes for big turbos, small ones don’t have much lag bcz they need low to mid revs
1:34 Welcome to Portugal from the 80's.
Where crazy doesn't even begin to describe the madness that rally was back then.
you can tell why Rally was more popular in countries with free healthcare 😅
9:45 no need to worry, the Peugeot is very agile.
What a perfect advertisement for the car company.
and one of the best driver, among 3, driving the audi quattro was a french woman! michelle mouton
Peugeot is called like that because of it's french creator Armand Peugeot who created the brand in 1889 and it is prounounced like that because g+o is prounounce like "go" so you add a "e" like g+e+o to make the sound "j" and the "t" is silent
One big moment was few years ago when Henri Toivonen old lancia delta s4 was driven by his younger brother Harri in rally finland as tribute..
Here in Europe we don't need medical insurance, because healthcare is free. Furthermore, if you are injured during a race, it is the federation itself that compensates you for damages for lack of safety on the track
The Paris Dakar Rally. Is a rally over 12 stages. In the desert of Africa. And has also been held a number of times in South America. Motorcycle, 4 whilers, Cars and Trucks. Participate in this Rally.
To get a real feel for the speed and the art, I'd suggest you look for one of the cockpit videos. There are some really crazy clips out there. Especially when the copilot's instructions are available.
Santos's crash was caused by a photographer standing on the inside of a bend leaning in to get a good shot . Santos tried to avoid him but as a result he lost control of the car going into the following bend
Turbo lag : as turbo is using exthaust gasses and lower revs there is no enough exthaus gasses to drive turbo to generate boost. Audi's "special valve" was to feed fuel to exthaus and igniting it so turbo were running always higher speed than engine speed and exthaust gasses would otherwise allowed it. Lag is the time it takes to engine rev up enough to run turbo fast enough to get boost. On 80's turbos, which were big in size, that lag were very noticiable; "no boost, no boost, no boost, all the boost and h*ll break loose...".
fun fact is we got this era the new group b its now called rally1 with 500+ hp cars and with a hybrid system in it but got only have toyota yaris gr, ford puma, and the hyundai i20n
Good to see ya back,oi oi girl!
Lancia Delta S4(my all time favourite) Group B could do 0-62mph in 1.9s . On gravel.... Back in 1986. Eat that Tesla Model S Plaid:) Cheers Robin
When you've done with rally it will be time for the Isle of Man TT......
The race shown here was in the 1980s, when there were no assistance systems. And racing is called rally
Peugeot is French thats why
Rally drivers are a different breed. They can do some crazy shit
A Person who was involved with the Rally for Audi, sad in an Interview. That they regularly collected fingers out of the Spoiler on the back.
This was kept secret by the F.I.A to avoid distressing his family and relatives. As Sergio body was actually recovered from 26ft up a tree
Why was the car sliding into the crowd?
Because back then "no life mattered"
i had an audi quatro Road car and yes they were fantastic to drive just a couple of cheap mods to it and they drove REALLY Well..loved my quatro.
Group B photographers some of the craziest people out there putting themselves right infront of the car until the very last second to get the perfect shot
Spectators would reach out and touch the cars. when you get back to the pits there would be amputated human fingers stuck in the bodywork. Turbo lag is the effect that the turbo does not activate at low engine revs. You need to keep the accelerator floored. Modern turbos work at lower revs
we don't need insurance, we have public safety
Fire reaction channel btw 💯🔥🔥🔥
I have owned "rally" cars through the years, Toyota Gti´s corolla and Celica, BMW, I have driven Peugeut 205 and quattro........And also Subaru Legacy........ All wheel and 4WD Works........

Every rally driver's motto - "If in doubt, flat out!"
We don't need insurance, the state provide the wealth care.
Rally is on normal closed roads plus the rallycars are all terrain vehicles pretty much and in Europe health care is free
o, and Favor.... health care in Europe IS FREE!! or, better, it's completely free if you're under 18... the rest of us get it "unlimited" (regardless if you have a "sore throat" or you need a "hart transplantation") trough the normal taxation and contributions of our monthly income, so nobody in the health care system asks you was the cause of the injury your recklessness or not! you just get attended!!! ;)
and try to view group B spectators, as the "bull runners in Pamplona"! it was the question of "excitement and thrill".... both of the fact of being so close to the "power and skill of the action" as well as of the danger it presented!
Groupe B , is a categorie don't have a power limite. ~600-1000hp , after wrc close a categorie because a very dangerous , the team use a groupe B car just for desert race " dakar"
Salut ^^ 13:30 Les pilotes n'étaient pas d'accords avec le danger du public trop près du tracé, ils militaient pour plus de sécurité
Next reaction: Group B- age of the supercar 😃
gonna give a small tip, look into the mg6r4, had group b lasted 1 more year, it would have been called the turbo killer, after all, to this day the mg metro 6r4 curb stomps modern rally cross cars and makes the audi and t16 look bad, after all, according to the logic of the time, the only ways to make a car faster was either bigger engine, or add a turbo and if that didn't work, throw on bigger turbo or both, the 6r4 is naturally aspirated and made enough power to go toe to toe
it's pronounced like puh-sho, BTW! you should try also Dakar rally and Indycar!
Next video: Paris-Dakar in the 80's! :)
"Fun" fact : was not uncommon for group B drivers to find pieces of cut fingers on their car bodies at the end of the race (wings + speed + reckless crowd....)😵💫
these races are why u get special models like mitsubishi evo , suburu sti, focus rs. they made these cares so they can race them. look like regular cars but if u have one of these models you'll understand. and 400hp is alot of power then because cars used to be alot lighter. cars today make more power but are marginally faster than sports cars of the late 80's and 90's.. 2 thumbs up on the video.
Those cars had lots of More power than 350hp. About 600-700 hp was closer. That 300hp was a rule/law. Manufactors didnt give f.. K about that.
It's Europe, health care is free, you don't need insurance
healtcare is human right, not business. so its affordable
insurance is affordable since goverment regulate that.
Turbo Lag the turbo takes a lot of time to kick in and a sudden burst of power can be dangerous .
Ahhhh. Now you found it 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤
peugeot is french so you pronounce it as the french would do
Spectators also threw stones to cars they didnt like .
snow and ice rallies use steel studded tyres
The driver dodging the cows is probably Ari Vatanen, a Finnish rally legend who basically saved Peugeot from being bankrupt.
More money was spent in the rally than F1
