I watched a clip with a rally racer who basically said he let up because of people in the road and his copilot said "you let up, we lose" and that was that.
Rally drivers motto: "If in doubt, flat out!"
I join in to suggest the ''Group B - When Rally Got Too Fast'', it explains it quite well and gives also some background.

But it has its short comings also. It misses Toivonens crash with 037 in Costa Smeralda which almost killed him, and also it misses Attilio Bettegas death with 037 on Tour De Corse year before Henri and Sergio died, also Ari Vatanens near death crash in Argentina. All these are part of the very fibre of the group B history. Group B monsters in Finland by Amjays2 is great video.

One of the things this (and other Rally clips) often miss out is the night stages. Onboard POV footage of a night stage is genuinely scary.

I had a quick search and couldn't easily find any Group B night stages, but there are night videos from recent Rallies. Just remember that modern Rally cars have much better lights... and it's still scary.@@FirstUpGolf

Spectators in the 80s were next level 😂
These are normal public roads without modifications. There are no added bumps to make cars jump. Biggest jumps are In Finnish rally, which you checked first. It is also the one with fastest speeds. Drivers try to jump as little as possible because it slows them down. Car can't accelerate, when it is In the air.
only one stage with added jumps in rally finland is / was ruuhimäki at the very end of the stage.
I have to mention that "fun" fact that during services for maintenance, mecanics would find blood and even some fingers and other bits lodged in the aero pieces 😬
Every time someone reacts to rally for the first time they always get showered with Group B recommendations.
No wonder.
It was the golden age of Rally
Why so many people and so close? First, the rally had a "golden era" in the 80s, it was very popular. Secondly, at that time security was not considered as much as it is today. Third, the stages are public roads, so everyone could come and spectate.

Group B rally was what made a lot of car maker's famous like Audi when they used the 4WD Audi Quatro one of the best looking and performing rally car of all time..
Sweden rally is snow rally. They full throttle in darkness. Tru out of year they visit almost all surfaces and condititions
in the very beginning what it reads after Juha kankkunen's words.. Juha lives almost in my neighbour and my father built his house with Juha's brother, thought juha and his brother was not that much help at some times, they were always drunk as hell lol :D

@@FirstUpGolf I'm only kidding! I'm just glad people are discovering what was my first childhood experience of rally. I was 7 at the time, and these machines were otherworldly. They are special even now, but in the 80's, Jesus!!
At the time of Group B, there were about 10-12 drivers who could drive really fast with these cars. After the ban came the group A for boys and suddenly there were 30-40 rides with similar times. Where were they in the days of Group B? By the way, the saying was made by Walter Röhrl, multiple rally world champion, probably the best rally driver of all time.
Even in the 90s,rally got faster, than Group B.
Walter had his weaknesses, too. He did not like the Finnish roads because of the jumps, and he did not like "blind" rallies. Practicing and making pace notes were key to his and Geistdorfet's success. The RAC was "blind" until 1989, which gave a big advantage to crews that had lots of UK experience. The African rallies were also not to his taste

snow rally are the best.... Montecarlo, Norway, etc...
they dont do it in norway in WRC, in sweden and finland they do, (at least one year they had 2 rallies in finland, one in summer and second in winter)
Dude, I'ts basically the other way around 😁😋.... it's not that the "guy that's riding along prays that the driver knows what he's doing", it's HIM that TELLS the driver what to do and what is coming next!!!😁
Without him, the driver has no chance, since they basically are driving "blind" on a public road they in most cases never even saw, let alone raced on, and only had a chance to survey it before the race, to make the notes (that the copilot is reading to the driver during the race, from those notebooks you see copilots are holding in their hands 😉)...

Actually the current era WRC cars are (finally) faster... Group B was more raw, loud and brutal, also more dangerous and gave more thrills - but even if it took a few decades, WRC cars finally reached their pace. I stopped going spectate rally races mid 90's, since they had kinda lost their thrill... but for the last two years have started going watch them again - and damn they're fast now :) Only thing I miss from Group B is the sounds, also cars being more different from each other... but is ok :)

That's just incorrect information. The most powerful had5-600 hp. And only in the last few years. The first year's of Group B, they had no more than 300-350 hp.
Even in the 90s, rally got faster, than Group B. Better chassis, better brakes, better suspension, etc.
a lot of people died and were injured during the Groupe B era, now it's safer.
but if you want to react at the most dangerous sport in the world, watch the Isle of man TT. it's a bike race and on average more than 2 people die every year. There were 102 races and 266 deaths.
