i think you can look every Rallye Video and you are surprised at every Minute when you look, it is one of the greatest Sport and the Driver are amazing. this Sport Fascinates me about 20 Years.
Ari Vatanens crash pictured here is from Tour De Corse, not Argentina. Ari also was seriously injured after Argentina and was in a coma, it wasnt few broken bones but a near death call. He returned to rallying 1986 driving 0 car and returned to racing in 1987. During group A era he drove Mitshubishi,Ford and Subaru WRC`s, last podium was safari rally 1998 with Ford.
I've seen several rally videos, including Group B, but not this one.

Another great video about group B is “group B when rallying got too fast” but if you’re looking for more historical rally videos, I’d definitely check out VHS rallies on CZcams.
The crowd situation is basically the same as the TDF, but that’s a bicycle race so people on the raceway can absolutely destroy a cyclist’s whole career. And in the TDF you have media motorists that also wreck a cyclist.
In your last video, Nascar at cota, your answer to the question the fastest f1 vs fastest nascar lap. the fastest f1 lap is 1.36.169. The nascar fastest lap is 2.09.114
If I'm remembering Indycar went around the track around the same speed as F2.
Both were in the 1.40's I think mid to high 1.40's.
Nascar's lap times are still quite impressive as they're faster than F4 cars. And are like a billion pounds.
I was lucky enough that I got to see these monsters back in the day and loved every minute.of it.
Me too m8, lucky enough to go to Finland one year, but was always UK events, especially the RAC.

There is a reason why this group was called Killer "B"ees.
You didn't need to buy tickets back then, and they were stages, not tracks. They had the start in one place, and the finish in another.
A course is the place where vehicles travel during a race. It can be divided in stages or sectors.
The stage can be a track when there are roads to follow (like train tracks, hiking tracks etc) or an open path when it's like Dhakar rally across open spaces in the desert.
When a track starts and ends at the same place it is called a circuit. A road stage on a rally is still a track, but not a circuit.
Group B was so exciting because of the speed increase in one year. A lot of people think four wheel drive was what made these cars fast but the real deal was pure horsepower from turbos and superchargers. Four wheel gave some advantages on loose surface but two wheel handled better. Hence the Lancia WRC victory over Audi and Opel victories in Ireland and Toyota - Nissan victories in Africa (reliability). But the writing was on the wall. Four wheel drives got better and there is no going back at the top level.
Top WRC cars now are hybrid electric and restricted to 1600cc. Using four bar of boost and the electric assist they reach 500hp.
There's a video game called Art of Rally that's a top down 2d racer that really even with it's graphical limitations makes you feel how out of control group B was with just a controller, It's like $10 on Steam and highly recommend if you like racing games.
In spite of its rather dated graphics, I think the absolute best rally sim to this day is RBR, and nowadays you can drive really well modeled grp B cars there, and they are wild. Way too powerful to control properly, really, and lacking a lot of modern inventions, which is why you get heaps better times with the modern, less powerful WRC cars in the end anyway. If you have a decent set up (wheel, pedals, shift and clutch [grp B had stick shift, clutch, modern WRC cars have sequential gearboxes and no clutch needed, just paddle shifts), do give it a go to get a feel for the difference.
Michelle Mouton didn't just win one event, she won 4 and was second in the championship in 1982 losing the championship due to a technical problem!
And remember, to the side of the Driver is an observer, constantly reading from his notes about the road ahead: How tight the next turn, if bumps or hindrances ahead!
Group B insanity as an American the crowds of people on or right beside the track is unbelievable. Wish I could see any of these cars in person.

Modern crash and rollover survival requirements for production road cars have led to much safer rally cars. For amazing driving clips, incredible saves, and spectacular crashes, I highly recommend the "This Is Rally" video series on CZcams, especially episodes 9 and 10.
It's a great video but there's ton of errors on the details and some choices made on the production, but it makes the point still; 600hp sounds nuts today, imagine 40 years ago. About the fingers and what not cut off by cars, there's even video of Todt picking some off a T16 radiator.
Know people that were at those fateful stages at Portugal and Corsica '86, and personally have seen many Group B cars run at different historical events. Looking forward to see Joaquim Santos' very RS200 run this year, as it's being brought out as a hommage to him, that sadly left us a few days ago.
Ours will be second to last generation that is going to share its time with Group B drivers. So, if you ever have the chance to meet one, talk with them, don't throw away the oportunity to enrich this conection of memory of one of the most brilliant times in racing.
Edit: some of the most poignant errors mentioned:
-No tickets were sold, rally was and is free to attend and watch.
-Picture shown is of a "normal" quattro, not the Sport quattro (true homologation 200 units special).
-Drivers didn't report "seeing some smoke" in Corsica; the Peugeot behind Toivonen came through, saw indeed smoke but continued, coming on the other site of the mountain slope the driver (just imagine what would've been rscing through his mind) decide to turn around and race back to where he saw smoke. Once there, and after seeing evidently what've happened, he radioed the message that Toivonen had crashed. There's audio of the crash of Biasion's codriver call/radio with its team (Lancia) crying out loud the car was burning down, with no signs of Henri or Sergio making it out. It was a somewhat remote and isolated part of the stage, nothing could be done. Toivonen and Cresto died right when crashing, and the fire did the rest. Haunting moment. You also have to wonder what Santos and Oliveira carried through their lives after their crash. There's a great interview with Mr. Oliveira about it. God rest their souls.

Some of the onboard footage from Group B of them driving flat out through the crowds is genuinely insane, especially the Portuguese Rally(there was a brief clip in this vid). I'm just not sure which are the craziest, the drivers or the spectators? There could easily have been a lot more fatalities

It would be okay to say that Timo Salonen might be the most successful driver in group B's history, just because he was always focused on winning the same thing again and again. But did he win on any ground on 4 different cars? Did he give all other world class drivers a 10 min time difference in blind fog? Did he decide "well, I didn't want to be first, because I don't like the attention, but if this particular driver would be beating me, let's come back and just win the thing on the fly. Was he the one who defeated Quattro? Did he gather the drivers to end group B? Did he set a long time record on Pikes Peak? Did he beat the american Trans Am and Imsa Series in racing cars to show that it's nothing compared to rallye? Did he refuse to drive F1 because he considered it a kindergarden? No. It was Walter Röhrl. So if you're looking for the best one, here you go.
i never hat the opportunity to be a full rally driver. i always stuck to the rally cross. yea i had fun and loved to go sideways on wavy gravel roads and the squiling tires on the tarmac if you coming in a slide from such gravel roads but racing is expensive even with those crappy mostly stock but up to safety standard converted cars we use in rally cross.
for example you buy a car for rally cross. i would buy a car for 500€ to 1000€ then trow everything out i dont need to make it lighter also making money with it, because i dont need it anymore and also i have a small budget. now i need the roll cage for the safety requirements this are about 4000 to 6000€ only for the cage. then i do some modifications like engine tuning and suspension., flyback handbrake, replacing glass windows with plastic and such things also changing engine auxiliary positions like putting the radiator in the back of the car and drirecting the air from under the car through the radiator in the trunk upwards over the wing and putting the fueltank inside the cabin. i need moths to do this on my own.
in the end i have sepend about 10k to 20K this car and has no event i can race on i also need to pay for the permit to race on a competition this can also be 10k to 30k additional cost. then i need my racning license one in a while be refreshed. now i have a fresh license, my car and my permit now i need to transport my car to this locations and also i have to pay on some locations for my pit section where i park my trailer, my race car my portable home and workshop. i have to pay for my spend fuel my used tires and such tings. with out an investor this is really hard and if you crash your car and you cant fix it to the next event you are out for the season. no money back. all in all for one season with a new car you need about 80K and this is tough. better be a good driver and win or make good points on some events and make with it some money if you lucky some one find you who will invest in you even it is your local butcher or bakery this is a good start.
i first started driving in a kart then i was in atv kart series because i wanna try it out and this hocked me. after 10 years in a ATV kart series i had my driving license that was required in order to make your Rally license. so i did but the beginner license allows you only for rally cross and some dirt track races because i am not allowed to have a copilot that is required for open rally or sprint rally. so the closet thing i have done to rally was a big dirt course in a old brown coal mine. that course was from the top down to the bottom and back up to the top the fastest i could. every time over the weekend that course changed and very run was about 3 to 5 min. i had a ton of fun an this event but my car was not the fastet one so place 25 of 40. but i got a investor for my next rally cross race and they payed the permit and my pit locating on every race in this sesson and the only thing i had to do was painting my car pink with a big logo on the roof.
i mean yea it draw attention and we did it twice but there was no third season because of corona and for now i dont have the money and time to do this again on my own even with a funktional car in my backyard.

still irritates me they say group B became to fast and dangerous, instead of fixing what was _the_ problem. Stupid spectators standing literally in the roads.
Not downplaying that the cars became really (stupid) fast the last years of the group B, but the main problem was the outrageous lack of safety for the drivers with no crowd control what so ever.
spectators didn't kill the drivers, though. Measures should have been taken to prevent deaths of any kind, including spectators

The drivers have 0 blame for anything happening outside their control.
Who really was to blame was the FIA leader(s), not the cars, not Group B, the leader.
beh io quel periodo l'ho vissuto e in effetti la sicurezza non era la priorità. Il pericolo maggiore non era per i piloti ma per il pubblico fuori controllo. Nel video ci sono molte imprecisioni ma va bene cosi

I'm a bit stupefied, because time and time again I've heard that people had to buy tickets. As @user-uc8kr1pl6b as mentioned earlier, in is comments, the stages were free to spectate and that's why so many flocked to the public roads. Only in special enclosed spaces like race tracks, autodromes, people had to pay.
