    Rally consists usually like 20 special stages during the weekend, special stage is usually from 15km to 30km, also moving around to get on these stages is part of rally too. During this era, special stages lasted to the night.

      Also stages are public roads (closed during the race) so its point to point racing timed stages, whoever gets the combined shortest stage times wins the Rally

    Hello ! My father was a rally driver in the late 70s (amateur driver so not on par with the drivers from these clips), racing with a Simca 1000. The races are time trials and are not laps but going from point A to point B. I live in the southern Alps in France, where a lot of Rally competitions take place throughout the year, the most notable one being Monte-Carlo Rally, and the roads here are great for rallying : twisty mountain roads with snow and ice during winter. I drive regularly on such roads and they generally go from one village to another with people from the region (and for Monte-Carlo, from around the world) attending as spectators on the side of the road. Security measures have increased since Group B but there are still accidents, especially in the more amateur rallyes which don't have enough money for greater security.

    The stuttering sound you heard was an exhaust valve, letting out excess pressure from the turbo when the engine doesn't need it (switching gears up).
    The races were (are) held on public roads, no tickets.
    Yes, they race against the clock. The cars are launched with a few minutes apart for safety, and to avoid a slower car holding up a faster one. Usually the fastest cars on the previous stage/race are launched first.

    The car that was "screaming" (02:33 fwd) is a Lancia Abarth 037 (2.0 litre supercharged FIAT engine derived from the FIAT Abarth 131 Rally car). It was one of four truly exceptional rally cars produced by Lancia: the Lancia Fulvia in the early 1970s; the Lancia Stratos in the mid-70s; then the Lancia 037; and finally the Lancia Delta (Group 4 and Group A versions) in the 1980s and 1990s.

    For ice and snow conditions they use studded tyres, pieces of metal pourtruding outside the tyre. For drivers it's like racing in gravel, the grip is amazing. Another hint is studded tyres are narrower than other tyres, less contact surface but more weight pressure from the car to the wheels, helping the tyre to crunch more the ice or compacting the snow even more, gaining more grip even.

    The MG Metro 6R4 is the neat little boxy and aero heavy car near the start, from memory the car has a "V6" which is actually a V8 thats been chopped up a bit and is the only natrually aspirated engine of the 4wheel drive class.

    You have to remember that they are driving from pace notes from a co-driver, technically a good pairing of driver/co-driver don’t even have to look at the road to be able to drive at those speeds 👌🏻

  • @TheTraktorarne

    That sharp pssshui sound in some cars is a dump-valve on the turbo charger opening to release (too much) overpressure.

  • @spdcrzy

    The weird turn at 7:00 is because race cars have limited steering lock. The hairpin was both too slow and too narrow at the apex to drift through it safely (see: stone walls on the outside of the road) so the only option was to go wide (left) on entry and fully lock the steering in order to create the radius necessary for the turn.

    • @MrBanaanipommi
      @MrBanaanipommi Před 7 měsíci +2

      Those 4wd cars did not have hand brake at all, thats why they do hairpins like that

    • @spdcrzy
      @spdcrzy Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@MrBanaanipommi this is also true. But also compounded by the fact that the corner itself was simply too slow to allow the driver to approach it with a 4 wheel throttle drift.

    that's not backfire, that's the anti-lag system that gives you so much pleasure. Snow and Ice= Spikes. A race lasts for about 3 days. Everyday there are multiple special stages. Cars start with about one minute time delay. They race against time not against each other ( Formula sport). In the end the times are added. The drivers definetly earn money. At Group B times it might have been less then today

    Just to comment on your reactions/comments: Those group B competitions were mostly done by factory teams, which for example explains Porsche, which was for sure not privately owned. Same goes for Lanica, Audi, Metro, ... It is true, you could, as a driver buy this car, as 200 needed to be made for homologation, but i can't even imagine what the price tag would be if they had been willing to sell it to you (for example, Audi from this era, group B specs was for sale for just shy of a million EUR). And yes, factory drivers were quite well compensated for driving their factory team to the top of the boards. Just for tought: Ferrari was also developing a car (229 GTO), but never entered the race as it was prematurely banned, partially because of dangers to spectators and partially due several crashes, last one with 2 fatalities - Henri Toivonen and Sergio Cresto. Also, you mention several times how good these tires must have been. Bear in mind that the tires, suspensions, ... were all made in late 70, early 80 - so we have tires and suspensions on our road cars now, that are light years ahead. It was all on the drivers.
