Beneath the sunlit glamor of 1985 LA lurks a relentless serial killer, a willing acolyte of evil. Two detectives won't rest until they catch him. - Zábava
"I'm not afraid of werewolves or vampires or haunted hotels, I'm afraid of what real human beings do to other real human beings." - Walter Jon Williams
Very true.
One of my absolute Favorite Quotes of all time!
Absolutely true.
That's because haunted hotels or werewolves or vampires don't exist.
But human cruelty and evildoing is something that's genuinely scary and hidden
@@PrechtGaebolgHades Way to point the obvious out dumbass, the point of the quote is people are so deluded and washed up in their own world they don't realise there is evil within the very core of them, the human race. Humans can be brutally evil, and until things like that are shown, ignorance is bliss and people are complacent.
"It was the only time in my entire life that I slept with a gun"
Holy shit.
That is when you know you are dealing with someone that is pure evil 😳
I don't get it?
@@erniemaemalle1244 the fear level was through the roof in LA at that time. Everyone, including law enforcement was scared.

This documentary was well done. Thank you for focusing on the detectives and the survivors rather than glorifying the killer.
Absolutely right. That killer got his 15 minutes of fame. It was time for those that nabbed this vicious animal to be recognized for their dedication and heroics. 👍
Quit trying to make yourself feel better for watching it.
Kate you are amazing!
They hyped the police up like they were gods though
It’s called “the hunt” for him not one on his life story
The scariest part is the no motive, the randomness, the inconsistencies of his crimes. To walk into strangers home and brutally murder them, just for them being home & you being able to get inside. Makes you afraid even when your doors are locked. Lol.
I was so scared while watching it lol🤣 but what got me soooooo scared was the sketch that they made about his face, creepy af. And he didn't even look like that👁👄👁

no motive ? he had a bad house growing up his father used to tie him on a cross and leave him in a cemetery his cuz killed his wife in front of him he grew up as a satan believer all of that is enough motive
@@aligmal5031 No motive as in none of his victims were the same as his father, they were just random people.
He was consistent - he picked elderly, children or young women and was obviously afraid of stronger men. He was a coward, that is why he silently shot men in their sleep to avoid any confrontation...
Yesss!!! Netflix releasing so many true crime shows and documentaries ... waited for this a long time
Well you don't need to pick apart everything someone says. Yes I have waited for true crime docu-series to know the stories of the survivors and people who have lived around the said criminal.
You are most welcome to not watch it. No one's forcing you to do so.
@Paul not tyler swift lmaoo
@Paul that was said in general for the true crime shows not this specifically.

That news lady was annoying as hell and at some point you could tell she didn’t care about the public she only cared about furthering her career.
That is obviously portrayed in the show.
That's what journalists do. Innocent people die because of people like her, I don't know how they live with themselves.
THATS WHAT I THOUGHT i hate her so much
I didn't even understand why she had so much screen time as if she had contributed to the case, she just reported the news like all journalists back then

Sucks that they showed his face , I didn’t watch the trailer and just watched the series straight out and they do a good job of not revealing his face until the last episodes
Showed the other side of this true story. Very good.
For real now
Richard was demonic asf 😐and gen z really was calling him cute
Women were in love with him right when this happened too tho. Bitches are crazy at all ages lol
Demonic? There's nothing supernatural here. His brain wasn't functioning normally (ie it was fu**ked up) and this is what controlled his thoughts and actions. When you remove ancient superstitions and realize a person is capable of horrendous acts of violence simply based on their own actions things like this become a lot more terrifying.
@@JCTiggs1 pretty sure the “demonic” descriptor was meant metaphorically. Not literally.
Why did I relate to that on soo many levels

I remember being an 11 year old kid scared of the night stalker when I lived in Burbank, Ca. He was murdering during the summer and we had to keep all windows closed. The house would become like an oven it was so hot but it was worth the safety. When they caught him, everyone was relieved. RIP to the victims of this monster.
I had never been so frightened as a child. I never wanted to go to sleep. All I could see was the creepy police drawing of him plastered on the front of the LA Times. Such paralyzing fear.

Y’all act like he was an Army or something one bullet to the head would have killed that bitch
The fact he could've been a model, or a bad boy rockstar. He definitely could've tried out for modeling with that jawline, but he chose a different path.
Yes!
It’s really sad
@el for the victims and him too
Unfortunately even if he was a model, eventually he would go down this dark path. Because it's in him to be this evil. Ponsing around in front of a camera, or walking down a cat walk wouldn't have changed that.
Dude looks like a gay crack head...
this dude left too many foot prints lmao
With the same shoe every killing
I think it was on purpose? Richard never targeted anyone or anywhere specific. He went after children, seniors, white/Asian/black/Hispanic. He was also very fascinated with former serial killers such as Ted Bundy or the hillside strangler who all had signature killings. Maybe he left those Avia footprints as a way to say “yes I killed them”.

Yep now give us another season of the Mindhunters where we get the Night Stalker and we get to see BTK finally getting caught in 2005.
Gotta be coming soon right? I mean it was renewed and fincher just released a movie so I’m assuming he isn’t busy.
Bro they cancelled that show
@Matthew Ramirez yah im pretty pissed aswell... i loved it. and it ended with this huge cliffhanger.
Fincher isn't doing it. So if Netflix gets another show runner of equal quality to get it going that would be great.
@Matthew Ramirez yes! They were building anticipation for BTK the whole time and now we won’t even get to see it. It was a great show and definitely deserves another season. Apparently it’s “too expensive” to keep making and doesn’t bring in enough viewers. Netflix really messed up with this one.
The part about him having groupies is just mind boggling, old, young women were just fascinated by him and sent him pics. I couldn't believe it, what goes through the minds of these women. One person implied about him being a bad boy cliché. I would love a doc about these type of people, those who fantasize about evil people like him.
I also get they may not have wanted to glorify a serial killer but still it wouldn't have been a disservice to at least explain his childhood so we can at least learn how someone grows up to be him.
Also that female reporter could f*** right off
even manson got married in jail atc... and many others... its crazy
I didn't have a normal life, but I didn't get good relationship with bad people as well (better than nothing right), so I would say that even if the society can be sick and pretty messed up, these punks are just the worthless scum trying to bright. So people that admire them, are probably equal them, or just bored normies.
In the docuseries there is a rundown of Ramirez’ childhood and the trauma he suffered. Lots of drugs and violence.
That's definitely something I couldn't wrap my head around.. absolutely disrespectful to the women he raped & tortured.. he had no sympathy, it would be a different story if he met them on the outside.
These women tend to be attracted to the bad boy, and/or have sado masochistic fantasies. A portion of them see a damaged soul who needs nurturing.

Honestly this was one of my favorite documentaries to come out in a long time. I'm glad they focused on the survivors and the victim's families more than the killer himself, as well as focusing on how the detectives were affected by it. Detective Gil Carrillo was incredibly fascinating to hear the side of, and honestly there are parts of him that remind me of my grandpa; the kindness and warmth he has, the sense of humor and dedication to doing what he loves. This was a really good watch, thank you for putting it out there.
I thought it was funny when the cop was interviewing him, got super scared when he said that Richard got very sensitive when he asked him about his childhood and all of a sudden Richard started hyperventilating and looked like he was about to levitate!

@Blackflag I agree no one can’t top Richard. It’s sad that so many veterans from Vietnam were torturing the good people over there, the Vietnam soldiers that’s different but the Villages people that’s not right and sad. The cousin was torturing villages people and young Richard was brain washed. I almost felt bad for him, but I’m glad he’s dead.
@Blackflag that’s a good question? So I looked it up and it turns out the cousin died in 1995 and your not going to believe this but the army gave him a hero's burial with a twenty-one-gun salute. At the time of his death he working for Texas Workforce Veterans Services in San Antonio, Texas. I am in agreement with your assessment of the Contra disgrace and U.S. criminal overreach in Latin America which you could even trace back to the end of WW2 as a shameful chapter in the U.S. government's modern history, but I don't see the link to Ramirez. Ramirez was a highly disturbed psychopath who you could argue was born with a psychopathic personality disorder that was further cemented by the tutelage of his highly disturbed and criminal veteran cousin and the abuse on him by his father. Is there any evidence that he was a pasty or was set up? It seems pretty straight forward as a case of a disturbed individual committing serial murders and rapes as a result of his psychopathy and the influence of drugs. It seems like an overreach to attach a conspiracy as the cause and motivations for his numerous crimes. Where did you learn this assessment? I've never heard it before.
Thank you Marta for responding to my question with decency and respect, in the age of polarisation discussions seem to just be shouting matches and unelaborated statements of disagreement tinged with condemnation, so your diplomacy I admire.

As a little boy in San Gabriel Valley , I had to live through the fear of coming in contact with this evil creature.
My mom and her friend actually met him at a party once during their high school years. This was before he moved out of town to make a name for himself mind you, even then they felt he was very strange...
@LAUREN ELIZABETH BARRIOS Oh hell no. I'm glad my late grandpa was the type to be the "No boys allowed or I'll shoot them" type. The friend I think had a bf though.
Did she say he smelled bad or had bad teeth at that time too?
If you want to know about Ramirez' life, motivations, psychology, etc. there's tons of info on him all over the Internet. As the title distinctly says, this is about the HUNT itself, how the investigation was conducted, not about him, so I don't get people complaining because they expected otherwise. My main complaints are about the unnecessary dwelling on Carrillo's family life (what was the point of the wife getting center stage so often without any useful or interesting information - American sentimentality at its best - or worst). I did like that closing line of his, though - wasn't expecting it at all and it shows you can still retain your humanity even after facing the ultimate evil.
I also got the sense that some of these people agreed to be on the doc as a kind of competition with each other, to see who came off best, namely the LAPD vs. the SFPD. And yes, that glaring mistake in the dentist's office, just because the department didn't want to waste more money keeping their men there, then installing that defective alarm speaks volumes of how incompetence and inside politics can come close to destroying a well-conducted case.
Also, that arrogant female journalist who was so obviously interested in a scoop and making a name for herself and couldn't care less about the investigation, pretending to be so affected by it all in the end... so fake, never bought it.
Don't get me wrong, I binged the whole series, it was very interesting and well done, with a real sense of how scary and grim that Summer must have been for Californians, but some things just seemed "off". I still rated it a 7/10 on IMDb.
If this doesn’t end with the hood chasing him and helping get him caught I’m gonna be pissed
East LA , on Hubbard st .
That doesn't happen..saved your time
@@avi3020 bruh
My coworker is an OG from Boyle Heights. He was part of the beating and captured of Richard.
@@avi3020 This actually did happen, look it up!!
I need more content like this on Netflix
I'm addicted, started watching it a few days ago and every chance I get I put this show on. Nearly done. It's good so far, sick and twisted and demented and warning: extremely graphic.
When I saw this trailer I was a little worried they were going to give Ramirez too much attention but the series handles the story very respectfully.
Rather than making RR the main character the focus is placed on the hard work of Two detectives who caught him. It reviews the victims stories in painful detail so you know just how awful and selfish the killer was. It really makes sure you know who the villain and hero’s are
I'll never forget the fear that was flooring the community in 85. I was 8 years old, but clearly remember the news following the murders. All of the adults in my apartment complex would talk about this all the time.
I had an older brother who was 16 yeats old at that time. The day Richard was caught my brother and his friend Jim were at some backyard party, drinking and chilling out. At some point they realize a bunch of people in the neighborhood he was in were running around in a frenzy.
The cops were driving around and so my brother and his friend thought the party was being busted out, so they ran out of the back and into an alley. In that alley they came across Richard, they didn't know it was him until he was arrested, but it was him. Ramirez was hiding behind a trash bin, had peeked out, saw my brother and his friend and shushed them (putting his finger up to his lips and going...shhhhhh) My brother thought it was someone else from the party running out. Next thing they knew people were parading around the streets celebrating, for what? They did not know.
He watched the news later that night when he got home and told me what happened. Absolutely crazy!
Born in 77 I see... same as me... My god your brother stared into the eyes of a demon
Great story. What address was this apartment?
Yo apenas acaba de nacer
I just watched it, and it was good, but I wish they would have talked about how he lived, what his everyday life was like, who did he interact with, more footage of Ramirez speaking, his thoughts, family/upbringing. More witness/survivor testimonies. More interviews with people that may have encountered him on a daily basis or by coincidence and didn’t realize who he was until after he was arrested. More details about Ramirez and less about the detectives. I get that the detectives were fundamental in gathering evidence and finding connections in crime scenes, which I loved that they emphasized, but the details about their personal lives seemed irrelevant.
I agree with your comment. I really wanted to know more about his life, but I realized by the name of the documentary, they will not mention anything about his childhood or family. The documentary focuses on his persecution and the important role the detectives had. I am disappointed a little bit.
I agree, too! This way, it slightly missed the point of painting a portrait of cruel people like this.
me too. I was waiting the part when he talked about his thought and it didn't have. ._.
@@ryankalubu The director said his goal was NOT to glamorise Richard Ramirez but rather the detectives.
@@19cemeterygirl @lovemusicamusa @Ryan KaluBu Yeah, I think they did a great job painting a timeline of how the crimes and other events unfolded. Also, the details I had no idea about, like the shoe print and how he ate some of the victim's food after the crimes. I had no idea about all the children, and it was horrifying. I guess it just felt like the series needed 2 more episodes focusing on those details I mentioned in my original comment for it to feel complete. And from a social perspective, I wondered if the Mexican community received any negative backlash for what he did, especially during the ’80s. What did his family say?
I only watched the trailer, and tbh I’m locking all doors and never sleeping again.
calm down.
People cried about how this went too far for a serial killer series which made me think that it didn't go far enough. Don't PG the real investigation and what really happened. It was creepy and very dark, but it almost made you feel the fear those people felt who wondered if they were next. If you make it to joyous and PG it takes away from the danger lurking out there and makes it seem like these documentaries are just fun and love for all ages.
This guy was legit terrifying.
I grew up in LA during this time. I was in elementary school in LAUSD and both my parents worked so we walked to school. My mother was TERRIFIED everyday. This 1 guy had all of L.A. petrified.
2024 still here watching this trailer because it’s just go well made ! Gives me chills still today .
I watched the show in one night, everything about it was just mind-blowing and messed up in many ways. This man was pure evil. I already watched many documentaries about him but this one was very detailed and felt real cuz it was told from people involved and got to know new facts about him. I really hope Netflix keeps doing this type of shows, documentary series about serial killers
They missed one of the biggest factors in Richards life. His insane childhood.
His cousin killed his wife right in front on him at 13 (that's just one thing).
I was six years old when this was going on and I still remember the evening news updates and the little graphic ABC used to represent the then-unidentified Night Stalker. I was so, so scared that this guy was going to show up at our house because most of the murders happened in neighboring cities. My poor mom had to reassure me that he wasn’t going to get us.
That’s why you own a Gun and three pitbulls
This documentary was great - so much insight that I did not know about in previous documentaries, and I loved all of the unseen court footage. Great on the director for focusing on the case and victims and not glamorizing Ramirez.👍🏾
My grandpa knew Ramirez not personally but they went to the same school he told me he was a very quiet and odd guy.
this is the best documentary i’ve ever watched. i love that it mostly pays attention to the detectives and the victims. can’t wait to get netflix again so i can binge watch this 3 times a day again
One of the best documentaries from Netflix. Well done Netflix you truly are the masters of crime documentaries.
the series gave so many brief details , which is great , they didn't focus on his childhood and the factors that made him like that , but all in all the series were great
This is a really good crime docuseries but what's missing are the events in his personal life that turned Ramirez into monster. I appreciate the efforts of the police officers to catch him, but i want to know more about Ramirez and not about the personal life of the police officers
i agree
@el I never thought about it that way. Very good point!
the police are evil also specially for not warning the neighborhood that there is a killer on the loose !!!
Not you trying to glamorize a serial killer. I'm glad it's about the victims bc they have a voice too.
@@maleahj308 Oh my God. My poor p.c. baby, if you think that i glamorize Ramirez then you have a serious lack of understanding. But i won't bother to explain anything to you. Waste of time
This is the first series in years that I started and finished in one sitting. It is so well made. The narration, the visuals, the music, and the way the victims and investigators were interviewed were all classily done. I hated the guy so much, that reporter, oh and Mayor Feinstein. LOL
"Immediately, I knew it wasn't John....but something. was. there......"
Damnnn...the fear in her voice is palpable.
Meanwhile, all the incompetent monsters who made sure he remained free (politicians who divulged info, reporters who bartered info, bean-counters who decided it was too expensive) never paid any price.
Exactly they did more bad than good .making shit worse like always
I watched the entire documentary and decided to come here to say, that the press and news reporters were so incredibly unhelpful through this whole case... Leaking information, contaminating crime scenes, extorting the police and threatening to release information that could help the killer get away... God. They were so useless.
An amazing documentary and thank heavens for Gil and Frank.
