The Real Reason Hasbro Fired Wizards Of The Cost And Magic Employees Despite Their Profitability

  • Wizards Of The Cost and their products like Magic the Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons have been hit hard by the Hasbro layoffs. Seemingly illogically soo as they remain profitable but that short term profitability hides a far more sinister reality, namely that things like the lotr race swaps making white Haradrim and black Rohirrim are poisoning the entertainment market

Magic is doing fine enough to stay afloat, and D&D is on maintenance mode until 5.5E drops next year so we don't know what its sales are like. Hasbro is just taking out the collapse of the action figure market on WotC becuase WotC has overtly pissed away any good will it had left with the vocal fanbase.

    • @jeremyrichard2722

Well, the typical thing is that children are seen as a very profitable market as parents and relatives can be very generous with them, and in many cases spend more money spoiling their children, than they do on themselves, beyond the whole issue of birthdays and christmas and so on. As a result when corporations get ahold of a property, one of their first impulses, especially with science fiction and fantasy with all of it's spectacular visuals, is to dumb it down for the youngest audience possible. Figuring more of whatever it is will sell if it's bought for kids instead. Likewise due to the political conditioning in schools and borked social media feedback, they figure "woke" is in with the youth in ways it is not. With a lot of these properties though they have been around a while, and the kids who are into them want them the way they are supposed to be if nothing else, which is why it fails.
Corporations hire Hasbro to kiddify IPs, and Hasbro buys IPs itself just to try and do the kiddification for more money schtick.... so it's not really surprising.
I think Tiktok also might be a factor, there are long standing rumors it's a Chinese tool of social terrorism and is designed to sort of manipulate the American public towards certain ideologies they know will hurt society, and provide bad data to companies in order to hurt the western economy. We don't know this is true, but some have been pointing to how Tiktok is one of the big things companies use to try and gather data on trends to market things to the youth in particular, and somehow they get it continually wrong. We don't know for sure there is a connection, but things like "Black Lord Of The Rings would sell really well" might be based on Tiktok data, with the feedback it generated being to tell them the worst thing they could do that the might actually believe.

    • @zenoblues7787
      @zenoblues7787 Před 6 měsíci +6

The issue with older collectors is they expect higher quality figures. Aiming for kids is healthier for the industry in the long term. Especially because they grow up to be those collectors. The best outcome is if you can appeal to both. Although Hasbro is not appealing to anyone right now.

Outside every other character alternating between an afro-caribbean hairstyle and half shaved mental illness haircut, and HR demanding that for every female cleavage there must be an equal representation of male cleavage (Wedding Announcement's flip side), there's issues with out-of-universe IP cash in sets and predatory "collectors" sets.

While I don't care one way or another about the "collector" sets as they are just optional choices for those with fatter pocketbooks, I do agree with your other issues.
Honestly I think what they've done to D&D is far worse, they're systematically gutting it of all it's original flavor and things that made it interesting in the name of pandering to the easily offended. @@DeathsjesterKMNP So i've also being playing magic since Jr High, and i'm a Mythic level player in MTGA (i don't even netdeck, proudly) and I would say my main issues with universes beyond are the resources WTOC is devoting to products that not many long-term players like. Time and expertise aren't infinite so these titular sets of course lead to the degradation of the main sets.
A related issue is extra formats and power creep attached to these expansions:
Arena recently introduced "Timeless" as a means to make LOTR and other jank cards playable, which is more resources taken, and by most accounts it's unfun as it revolves around setting off insane turn 2 combos/counter spelling the combo. Arena also introduced "Alchemy" to sell more product through special alchemy packs and seemly as a way to use cards that were cut during play testing (speculation); again alchemy is not well received by most players.
I think it poisons the game at large too focus so much of the company on this stuff.
As for the collectors stuff there's two issues: one is the marketing specifically with the 30th anniversary was promoted as the community as a whole celebrating the anniversary of the game. The product they chose to roll out for this community wide celebration was a 1000$ box of 60 non-legal proxy cards, where they talked about the drop chances of potentially TWO (fake) black lotus in one pack(!) in order to lure gamblers in.
The people taken in by these crack-dealer tactics are going to include great amounts of people who really haven't thought things through. Generally I think most whales are just people who spend their pay-checks very poorly - not really richie-riches.

Yep. Most only bought select cards for tournament decks, others because they were the strictly better cards for their commander decks, or offered too exclusive of an ability. Almost no one expressly bought any of it for the characters. The only thing selling BOXES was the One Ring serialized card. The moment it was found, the set lost half of its steam. The only other thing propping it up were the hyper-expensive modern staples that dominate tournament play. Namely The One Ring and Orcish Bowmasters.
I personally only got a Hobbit food deck, months later, because I expressly wanted the food synergy cards!

The great depression started because the president at the time signed control of our money over to and created a federal reserve bank, which was a privately owned entity neither federal nor government that it used to enslave us all and control our money. Americans have been made legal fiction through their birth certificate classifying them as chattel freight with an identification number, their social security number and used to exploit their labor through taxation and theft of property as they also devalue our currency through inflation. The dollar today only has 4% of the purchasing power it had even 50 years ago. There was a reason the constitution said our nations currency was to be of gold and silver and any who tried to change that were to be 'neck roped'. They created a world where the slaves think they're free so they go along with the system blissfully unaware it even exists or that they're considered property of those who own the federal reserve banks around the world.. as for who owns those specific banks. That's absolutely going to have been the case, yeah. Every quick cash-in the marketing heads try in order to get a win attached to their name leads to horrible long term repercussions.
But the long-term repercussions are much harder to pin down to one person so for them it's personally worth it to sink the company.

Also, you have the wrong box art for the product, that's the image for the collector boosters

I played a lot of 5e, and even helped run and DM multiple discord servers fo West Marches play. At least a hundred games across the entire level range for different builds. I bought all the 5e content on DnD Beyond to share with people on the server. And then they started to go crazy. First, the de-link of Stat bonuses to Race, then retcon of the flying monkey history (they were enslaved by wizards who used magic to make them sentient, and the american progressives lost their mind). Then the retcon of some evil races to no longer be evil. And all this time I've been furstrated with their Rules and Balance decisions because it seemed to cater to casuals who hate making strong characters.
I have stopped buying their products for at least 2 years now, and have been turned off of DnD entirely.

This is happening to all of western civilization at this point. Culture, societal trust, trust in institutions, gender relations, morality of any kind, etc. Just like brands and IPs, these things are being burned for cold, hard, short term cash, and they will golden parachute out with bags full of money when it's about to collapse. And when everything has collapsed, those who have even thought that far plan to either be dead, or secure in mighty castles ready to institute some sort of mix of feudalism and company towns, with soviet style (plus modern tech) control over people. But either way, society is being gutted in every social way (and economic, and material to some degree, etc) so the people with the power to do it can make a quick buck.

They can start with the CEO that they put in place at WotC. You know, the one who openly stated to the public within her first month of being there, that she wanted to turn the brands of MTG and D&D into the profitability of gambling cash shop, pay to win phone games. You know, the one who bought out Roll20 so they could turn D&D into a VTT to do the afor mentioned cash shop. You know, the one who decided to try and close the Open Gaming License, which pretty much tanked D&D overnight. You know, the one who decided to reprint older MTG cards that where legendarily worth a lot of money, making the original cards worth less money, while making WotC more money, and then saying it was for the fans, increased availability and all that. Plus all the things stated in this video.
    Yeah. Maybe start with her.
