I really liked the movie, sure the dialog was a little corny at times and gave me fast and furious Vin diesel "family is everything" vibes sometimes, but it was a great family movie and looked ridiculous and when you find out that every underwater scene was motion captured you just appreciate it even more.

Even with Neteryi and Jake saved the kids, spider fell and kiri was like “OMG spider fell” and Neteryi said “let’s go!” insinuating she doesn’t care for spider.
That’s why spider retaliated by saving his na’vi father because he feels apart from the kids, that’s the only true connection he has with someone.

Liked it far better than the first, and I’m hyped for the 3rd. If this is really a long epic about the different generations of this family, then I think Cameron will have something that over the long term will stand the test of time. His Star Wars.

      I concur, Sean.
The middle of the movie was perhaps the most intriguing to me. There was a bunch of good stuff about this. The whole outcast situation with the whale was relatable and tied into the battle at the end of the movie. I really liked the daughters but i think that killing off the oldest son made a bit of sense here as well as the adoption of Spider at the end of the movie. I'd have to assume that Spider somehow gets an avatar of his own. I'd like that for his character but there is something about him staying human that can sort of tie together the Na'Vi and humans. I'd have to go off a ledge here and say that towards the end of this series that the Na'Vi and humans come together as one. I really would enjoy it if that is the case, but if not, then it's no dilemma.

Look back at all his films every single one of them are very simple plots but has layers to them with some emotional attachment to them. Aliens is a simple war film but at the heart of it is a battle of 2 mothers. T2 is about 2 Terminators fighting for a kid but at its heart a kid finding a father figure & a machine learning the meaning of being human. That's just how he writes his stories.

it was genuinely a bad movie. SO many dumb shots just to show off visuals, like yeah i get it you have good CGI. Where is the story though? there was absolutely no story. It felt dumb and cheap that they reincarnated the marine leader, they wanted him to have a redemption arc where he cares about his son but then they take every opportunity to make him overly evil for no reason and that redemption just is forgotten about. The kids don't seem to be able to learn from past mistakes, they keep endangering themselves in the most ridiculous ways. Everything is so clearly telegraphed, we can see from a mile away that the water na'vi kids are going to put the younger son in a dangerous position and it was so obvious that his elder brother was going to die. The story is so weak, why the hell are the human forces expending all these resources to take out one na'vi? We find out that Earth is dying and all of humanity is ultimately going to come to this planet...but you want to go after 1 specific na'vi? And he decides to leave behind his entire army that is seemingly conducting successful guerilla attacks against the humans why? no idea. why have we never heard of these water Na'vi? No idea, no mention of any other type of na'vi in the first movie at all but conveniently here they are. So we have forest na'vi, sea na'vi, wanna bet that we will have mountain na'vi and desert na'vi? Some weak connection of the elements, earth, water , air and fire? The pacing of this movie is so off, the first movie did way better in this regard, we were introduced to new elements at relevant times and it never felt overwhelming nor spoonfeeding.
A personal opinion now, I am so sick of movies that just keep ramming thinly veiled climate change BS down our throats. Yeah, pollution is bad, we need to get renewable energy, but why are humans being depicted as these genocidal maniacs and other species are shown to be these morally virtuous nature loving hipies that are just way better than us in every single way

This is what I will say about Avatar: The Way of Water.
Films with over 3 hour runtime exist, (Titanic, LOTR, Endgame, Casino, The Godfather) and their runtime is never discussed nor is it against their enjoyability factor. With new streaming shows, most people do not care about watching a 10 one-hour per episode series. The bringing up of the runtime is irrelevant to a film’s quality. Second, while the plot of the first film is similar to other works, most of the “film bros”/movie reviewers watch comic book films which in terms are copy/paste stories just with a different superhero. It is also strange to mention Avatar’s age gap between its sequel when films like Top Gun:Maverick, Incredibles 2 and even Rambo took longer breaks and truly did not have an excuse to wait so long for their sequels to come out.
James Cameron’s secret to his successful films is telling a simple story with a big visual spectacle. The Way of Water has a very interesting story in which the children are front and center. The Sully kids are their own people and while they do make mistakes, in real life children/teens commit these same mistakes. Disobedience, proving oneself to parents and listening to peer pressure are very realistic and sometimes traumatizing moments.
Having the “boring” time to learn about the kids' dynamics with one another is important in order to care about their kidnapping in the later part. Films like The Breakfast Club and American Graffiti show scenes of teens being teens and that further explores those characters as beyond stereotypes. The Metkayina people are different from the Omaticaya people and having that moment of learning is important. Jake and Neytiri take a back seat as characters but it is important as by the end we get a sense of the entire Sully family and where they will go in Avatar 3.

First of all, they act like they're a bunch of present-day (as in, today) kids who run around speaking English with slang from Earth, while they're on PANDORA, this planet that you need to travel to for like 6 years to get there, in the 2150s or something, when they're raised by natives there, as well as a parent that was a disciplined Marine. - WHY were they starting and ending every sentence with "bro"?... Did Cameron just tell them to "just do what you would do"?... Cause it would probably be accurate. - Anyway, I wish they had focused more on Kiri for instance, because she was fascinating and I wanted to know more about her. - She had this natural fascination for her environment because of her mother, and it was just wholesome, and they should have gone more in-depth with her as a character. - They only touched upon her struggles with being "different", but it would've been way better if they went deeper on how she's offspring from Grace and all that. - Such a waste. - I honestly didn't even care that one of the boys died, which should made me weep. But I was pretty much indifferent because of the over-exposure and the "bro"-count they racked up.

Character development and worldbuilding, and just the audience's general emotional investment in the story, are often the biggest weak points for movies like this, but for Avatar they're the movie's biggest strength IMO.
Yeah the plot is generic and nothing super special, but who cares? It doesn't need to be special, it just needs to serve as a way to create stakes and make us worry for the characters and world we're emotionally invested in.
Tons of movies with a similar plot, or even a more special and more interesting plot, end up being incredibly boring because the emotional investment just isn't there.

every scene develops a character in some small way, allows to see the world from their eyes and lets us spend time with them rather than use them to drive the narrative. even the small scene of seeing Kiri stare at the sand reminded me of how Studio Ghibli films show characters going about their lives doing small tasks which mean nothing to the story but make them feel so much more real and I personally love it

I agree with Joe here, I really like this film, but it was definitely a transition point where we are being introduced to this new cast of characters. However for the life of me I don't understand the other two's criticisms of the villains killing animals "just to be bad guys." Humans are capable of evil when they are trying to force others to do their bidding, it's just that simple. The Navi hold nature and by extension animals near to themselves culturally and emotionally, and the bad guys know this. It's certainly not a stretch that they would kill animals to try and strong arm the Navi to do their bidding in that context..
