The Onion Owner Just Didn't Want Elon Musk to Buy It?!

- The new owner of The Onion bought it mostly to keep it away from Elon Musk. They intend to paywall everything, and hope to make money... someday. So I'm sure this will be just fine. Meanwhile, Kotaku is still living on borrowed time.

That's his worry? Sounds like this dude has got his brain pickled by politics. I miss the old Onion
Any comedian who hates the guy trying to save their job by protecting free speech needs therapy.
You don't even have to like Elon but the weird activist vitriol on the left is strange to say the least.
Lol the brain rot clogged his brain
I just perused it for the first time in a decade.
I firmly believe AI now writes the jokes there.
Yeah why would you wanna sell your dying website to one of the richest men in the world? Thatd be STUPID lol
Remember Geo media owns the Onion after all. I can't even blame this guy doubt it was his choice
Knowing this, I'd prefer The Onion never be heard from again. Babylon Bee has been "The New And Improved Onion" for years.
Eh. They have a good baseline for a joke but are pretty bad at the delivery. Ofc Onion set the bar pretty low as of late.
Babylon bee is good sometimes, but it's never been as good as the onion used to be.
The Babylon Bee leans way too right. And when right-wingers are mocked, their audience get pissed
@@ApocalymonI would much rather have the far right than the far left.
I'm the opposite. Thank God in heaven they stopped him from buying it.
Last thing we need is his clownish 4chan humor taking over another former staple.
Keep it out of his hands at all costs.
This guy will go bankrupt.
His wife will leave him.
And he'll blame Elon.
Once the BabylonBee came around, theOnion stopped being good.
🧅 "Who are you?"
🐝 "I'm you but stronger"
BabylonBee came about BECAUSE The Onion stopped being good. Or even mid.
It's been terrible before that, hence why the Bee exists.
So Babylon Bee has been eating The Onion's lunch for years?
@@aeroprime3322 Debating with myself whether you intended a food pun or not....
The onion became irrelevant the second real life became more absurd than their articles
Unfortunately you’re right. 😢
The Onion has been done for YEARS
Get woke...
that former actor that played the kid in the Shining, never does reviews for us anymore. He was a national treasure. Gone!! They had nothing else of value prior to the plandemic, their other videos were awful.
Never knew about the onion till now
Agreed. They forgot how to be funny I think sometime during Obama's first term. Guess the pressure just got to be too much for them not being able to satire the president without being labeled racists.
TDS hit them hard.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk has no idea this is happening and doesn't care.
Elon be like, "What? Oh no. Anyway..."
Same for his death cars.
@@dansmith1661 Death cars? You mean EVs as a whole? There's no shortage of videos of EVs catching on fire or having their safety systems failing. Pick a manufacturer that makes an EV, you'll find videos of them going up in flames. The new luxury chinese electric vehicles are great. Brakes don't work, airbags don't deploy. the rertractable handles don't work during an accident. Top quality stuff.
@@WEKM elon is a nazi
I mean, the Babylon Bee does what the Onion used to do. Elon having it would just make it another Babylon Bee.
Another Babylon bee is what it's supposed to be.
I haven't looked at The Onion in almost 20 years. Paywalling everything worked *so well* back 20 years ago, I'm sure nothing will go wrong this time.
Same. I first heard of the Onion back in HIGH SCHOOL. Never cared about it after.
Love your content. Keep up the great work!
Every news site wants you to pay to be informed. I stopped using it altogether.
Thank goodness the guardian makes it optional
When the unironically endorsed Hillary Clinton (Yeah I know) it was over.
IT WAS HER TURN!!
Well, if he's crazy enough to buy & put resources into this money pit, I say let him. But The Orion ain't long for this world.
Their paywall strategy is going to destroy it faster. Pretty much the worst possible approach they could have chosen. Their audience isn't big enough or dedicated enough to pull this stunt.
So it was a hysterical emotional decision based on their obsessions and their ability to scare themselves with their bedtime stories. Sounds about right for the Onion
And for the far left in general.
It used to be funny... now it is lame at best
The old onion videos are still fantastic. I'm amazed they're still up on CZcams, what with the censorship and offense-taking in recent times.
Everything woke turns to......
The Onion became the very thing they made fun of.
Lefties can't meme... when comedians can not make fun of what needs to be made fun of they stop being funny lol. This Onion bs atm is the most funny shit I have seen from the Onion in years.
Some can, if they're the old lefties that weren't afraid to mock both sides, or had no sacred cows when it came to politics.
Left-wing comedians and shows used to mock Bill Clinton and Bush equally all the time, and now they can't even make one joke about the current president despite all the possible material he's creating.
It's honestly kinda scary that we have a president that people are afraid to make fun of.
@@beauwalker9820 Yeah that would be South Park... which is still funny af.
The Babylon Bee is the real onion
That's the best comedy I've heard all week.
So they were just being petty.
This guy is the living embodiment of 'A fool and his money are soon parted"
Guy is living in the past when the Onion was "good" (not sure when he started reading it, I did back when it was free in Chicago), why would you waste money like his?
The Onion hasnt churned out a good joke more than a decade ago. Theyve been replaced by Babylon Bee for quite awhile now.
What a waste of money. Typical NBC thinking.
oh, the network run by the tribe; for the tribe.
Onion stopped being cool in the late 90's.
I'll counter and say early 2000's.
Why would anyone buy that shit.
I swear people think these websites are like a power ring they can put on and gain the power that’s been handed down for decades. If you couldn’t make a successful satire site with the attention of asserting political influence through TikTok before, I doubt the Onion is going to get you over that hill.
I've never even heard of The Onion until now.
This just sounds like the same logic behind the G4 revival. And how long did that last?
The ONION AINT FEEDING THEY FAMILIES WIT THIS ONE.
Meanwhile Elon: *_Oh No, Anyways. . ._*
Now it makes sense why Elon loves and support the Babylon Bee just to stick it up to the Onion.
Onion lost its relevance years ago. Just like sites after reddit and other apps etc got popular. A lot of younger ppl dont even know what it is
The problem at the Onion is they cater to leftists and leftists can't take a joke anymore.
Exactly. When you have an audience that are offended over every joke you can never make jokes.
The Onion has been on life support for years and they know that it is only a matter of time until it goes under for good.
RIP The Onion. Thank you for a hilarious ~25 years
Rest in pepperoni, it was fun while it lasted.
Whenever Kneon says "and I'm not here with Geeky Sparkles", I imagine a "no-oh" in Geeky Sparkles' voice, in the same manner and fashion as her "hello"
Am I the only one thats noticed that if the subject doesn't involve Disney Geeky is basically never there.
@@ABD-pc3jf She's not fond of the more conflict-based subjects, rather than Disney which is fair since Disney is her expertise. I see it in the same light as neither of them wanting to cover Star Wars since they're both fed up and over it.
What the heck is the onion? Ive never heard of this site before then again I've always stayed away from the media
You know the Babylon Bee? It used to be that, but centrist. Then it went woke and died.
It's a satire news group that used to be relevant some 10 years ago.
The Onion is a news parody and satire company. They have a lot of fake news skits uploaded to CZcams that have pretty high views, but they've long since lost relevancy. The most recent videos aren't even skits, they're just headlines with voice overs. I don't know what caused them to fall-off, but that's the state that they're in last time I checked.
@@flarestorm9417 "I used to think that the Onion was a comedy, but now I realize, it's a tragedy."
They were once a satarist site which made funny fake "news" but to be honest a long time ago that changed and it became just another far leftist site.
lol the Onion is a walking corpse. First IP they will sell to bring in revenue is Kotaku. Kotaku as a IP has some value and will not be a money pit for Onion, just the rest of the new owners ideas will be a money pit for Onion.
( When the Onion is so worthless, it makes even Kotaku look actually-valuable by comparison. )
I kinda wondered why Clownfish is suddenly covering news in Tech, before remembering that "The Onion" is a news site, and is not The Onion Router at all.
Babylon Bee has replaced it. If this guy wants to throw away money, go ahead.
Forget buying The Onion. No one would want The Onion as a present. And you can quote me!
I love cooking with onions, they're so good when they're caramelized and made translucent. Great for gravies, meats, crying to myself alone while cooking, clearing my sinuses. Combines amazingly well with garlic, tomatoes, cheese sauces.
The Onion will fade into obscurity, just like summoning Derek Smart into a forum.
My biggest issue with The Onion is that they publish a lot of repeat articles nowadays. There's like one Onion article that gets republished after any mass shooting in the United States. It's like some headline about a mass shooting happening in a state where is shouldn't happen because of conceal and carry laws. It's annoying. So like already mentioned, there is no headline from the Onion that even sounds like a parody nowadays.
Real life has become the Onion. So yeah they aren't satire anymore.
we dont need the onion anymore, we have legacy media
This would be like me buying a box of sanitary towels........THEY`D BE USELESS
In the mid 90s there was a satirical talk show call the nightstand with dick dietrick (play by Timothy stack) what killed the show was that the real talk shows became even more absurd than nightstand. The same thing happened to the Onion.
I checked maybe two years ago and couldn’t believe how unfunny it was.
The Onion hasn't been funny for close to ten years. Still no danger of it from the sounds of it.
I would buy Kotaku in a heartbeat, only to have them all publish a daily apology for all their lies
At least when this person bottoms out at least the babylon bee will still outperform as they currently have
"The Onion sets itself on fire to protect The Onion"
-An Onion article title before they stopped being funny
So they sold to Black Rock.
Fun Fact : They called it 'The Onion' because it stinks, and makes your eyes water
Couldn’t he either join with the Bee 🐝 or start his own satire site with a webmaster and a few rotating writers?
Any corrupt company should never sold.
"But don't you care about-"
Does not matter if they have a family to feed. People who have a family work to care for them.
Clownfish TV is worth 1000 times more than the Onion..
Its so petty. How pathetic and delusional do you have to be to get that way?
The onion has been irrelevant for a decade forgot they even existed
Putting this behind a paywall, will be the fastest way to make nobody look at it at all. It is not worth looking at even when it is free.
That's some wasted money right there
I haven't heard or seen anything from The Onion in forever, i'm surprised it still exists 😂
The Onion needs to merge with The Ring.
And become The Onion Ring.
The Onion went from telling jokes to becoming one.
"I think I can be relevant and change hearts and minds by not understanding the nature of satire," he said unironically.
🤦🏻♀️
The last time the onion was relevant John Edward’s thought he could be president
It would have been great if Elon Musk just bought the Onion name and associated domains / IP and gave it all to the Babylon Bee.
I mean, I can respect someone doing something purely out of spite.
I doubt Elon was ever going to buy it. This is more like the South Park where Stan's dad bought a video rental store and went mad from the isolation.
The Onion still exists?
I was shocked that the Onion was still a thing...hadn't heard a peep out of them in *years* !
Even Shrek doesn’t want that woke onion
It's this exact sort of thing that sent the Onion down the tubes in the first place. There isn't anything the new owners are willing to do that'll save it. Just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
"Paywalling everything is always a great idea" - Rooster Teeth
Hope the checks bounce 🤣🤣🤣🤣😉😂
Sounds like The Onion isn't doing well if they've got to try the measures that have failed everyone else that has tried them.
Why would anyone do any kind of media with the ad rates being what they are?
I image a person having to sleep in a haunted house to inherit kotaku
I basically saw that guy on MSNBC and he said that he’s always loved the Onion, he’s got the staff hard at work ready to do what the Onion has been doing for years, so yeah it’s understandable that he didn’t want Elon Musk to have it.
The problem with having Kotaku writers do game guides is that there's not one staff member who has ever gotten a platinum trophy/completion on any x-box, playstation or steam game.
So they're all unqualified to write guides.
They haven't *played* a game, even
Lovely. Go put jokes behind a paywall when memes fly free... that's a winning model. He must be a Harvard business major, given the priorities. "Keep it out of the hands of the Bad People first, then profit second."
"The Onion" isn't necessary anymore, we are LIVING it every day.
I didn't even realize that the Onion was still around.
They may as well close now because they destroyed the business with that announcement
I love that the Bee has offered the Onion 2 of their stories!
Oh no my precious activisms aaaaah 😱
"Former NBC reporter and Daily Beast editor" tells you all you need to know. Meanwhile, TIFO The Onion still exists, if you'd asked me this morning I would have figured it had been shut down years ago.
So, they killed the Onion just so someone else wouldnt be allowed to make it successful. Sad, just sad.
I don't know exactly how it works, but there's definitely a scheme here. Trading around dead and unprofitable media sites must yeild an unseen to the general public revenue in the short-term.
It's a gamble. They believe the name is still valuable
Blackrock is actually a brilliant multinational stock-shorting scheme, that's the only rational explanation for why that company can do nothing except tank everything it invests in.
@@Coconut-219Wanna bet they're skimming some money as well?
I just find it funny that the Onion decided it rather fade away than become a more honest site.
Somebody finally peeled the thing.
When the BabylonBee became prophetic it showed how crazy this world has gotten.
And nothing of value was lost.
Wow. It’s fallen a long way from when it was just a fun silly free rag I got in record stores in Chicago back in the 1990’s.
Speaking of Grummz, the person who said the contract of Grummz is 20k, increased it to 30k.
Kotaku isn't worth what a single stock of BuzzFeed is.
The Onion's most ridiculous stories are more believable than what is coming out of 'rear' news sites.
The only time my friends and I talk about the onion is to say that it's not funny anymore, and hasn't been since the 2000's.
Someone once said to me that comedy is the pressure release valve of civilization. If you don't let people let off steam with laughter, they'll let off steam in your house with weapons. (In reference to pick one: King, Lord, Regent, Bureaucrat)
I still go back and watch some of their older videos even though they aren't topical anymore. Obama at Denny's is a classic
I remember The Onion. Is it still around? I thought it was gone.
Elon's already buddy buddy with the Babylon Bee. I'm not sure what they're worried about.
The Onion had a print version, way back when it was funny, before it was sold the first time.
The onion ran out of layers long ago.
I don't know if my favorite was the death penalty one, or the dolphins evolve opposable thumbs one.
Why would he want to? Lol
