- Hey Guys, Migs Here! In today’s video, we are working on my 1974 Corvette’s engine that we recently removed in order to find the cause of a wicked screeching noise in the clutch area, but while the engine is out, we are cleaning, resealing and painting it! And WOW it came out AMAZING! Thanks for Watching! Please Subscribe, Like, Comment and Tell Your Friends About the Channel!

Hey Migs, from what I can see, you have a pre 72 350 that someone has put a cast GM crank in it. The heads are 'double hump' high compression with straight plugs and the block is a 4 bolt main with studs for a windage tray. The original crank would have been forged. The damage to the pan was probably the result of a rod bearing failure and the reason for the replacement crank. In a previous video you said it has a 'racing ' transmission. It's a Doug Nash 4+1. Don't beat on it too hard, they are pretty fragile. I suggest the following changes:
1. Make sure the heads have been machined for hardened exhaust seats. If not, the seats won't last on unleaded fuel. Got my fingers crossed on that one because to have them done is goint to run you $1000.00.
2. Replace the timing chain and gears with a double roller set. The chain is too loose and the plastic cam gear is a no no.
3. Replace all of the freeze plugs. That rubber one on the front of the left bank is a band aid meaning the rest are pretty well rusted on the back side. Brass ones are easier to install and don't cost that much.
4. Be sure to use oil with ZDDP. You can use additive or use Valvoline VR1 Racing oil. Or Brad Penn.
5. That oil galley you have the bolt in on the rear 'China Wall' is for a mechanical gage and is 1/8 Pipe Thread.
6. The intake manifold is for pre 65(?) with the tube and breather in the front.
The one piece oil pan gasket is the way to go, but there are 2 different ones. The radius on the ends are different.
I'm 77 years old and have been building engines for 50 years. I have a 69 Vette I bought new and still do all the work on it.
Just passing on what I've learned over the years. Wished you lived in Florida, I could help you a lot.
This guy ^ knows his shit..... Too bad the boy rebuilding it won't listen to you......
Agree with this old school wise man. That crank flange shape and large harmonic balancer are 350. The heads are ‘67 or earlier double humps. Just measure the movement at the top of the valve spring with a dial indicator to learn the cam lift number.
I definitely agree with this guy. I noticed the intake and timing chain right off the bat.
@@skulledmonte84 yep, looks like he's half assing it, then will probably have problems later
That thing is a solid 3 on the shit o meter
You should have put cardboard around the valve train to keep over spray off because the oil and heat overtime will cause it to break down and go through the engine and possibly destroy it
Over spray on the valve springs bloody hell 😳
yeah that's what I said, no tape or nothin
doesnt matter.
Break clean and traffic film remover is how you clean an engine. Also the pressure washer.
Hah you’re doing the Craigslist engine rebuild! Brand new!
God bless you if you do what is right
You are a very smart guy
Nice one Migs.. Certainly looks better, You have worked damn hard, looking good..
Whoever put that engine together made a ton of mistakes, its missing the dipstick guide tube that goes in first to stop the dipstick from getting shredded by the crank webs, they used rubber freeze plugs which is a horrible idea and is only good for temporary repair, you NEED to get rid of them and replace them with either steel or brass freeze plugs or they will come back to bite you, also they used a nylon toothed timing gear which is not a good idea simply because the nylon teeth are notorious for breaking, either replace it with an all metal single row timing set or get yourself a double row timing set, and if you get the thick 1pc oil pan gasket that should get you enough clearance so hopefully the rod bolts won't hit the pan again.
Man that pan is hammered!looks like you have a bit of play in the timing chain..
Get some valve covers from cleetus
There is a crack in the block. You can see it at 9:52. That’s is most likely why they put the rubber freeze plugs.
Also at 11:27, looks like it's cracked on the other side too, it must have had straight water in it and it froze and cracked the block, I would be amazed if it somehow isn't leaking, someone must have thrown a whole bunch of block sealer in or got lucky, that block is junk and is not worth repairing.
So glad another person is taking care of this style corvette. I love this generation!!
wow that looks super nice, good job!
Migs you need a engine rebuilder to come get that motor and put it back together properly... stuff missing on it..
That job you are doing it is so awesome now buddy !!!🤗🤗💪💪
Migs doing a perfect one minute Monty Python routine at 14:04. Struggle, struggle, groan, groan, push, heave, hernia…(smile) not too bad! Merely a flesh wound! I love this kid’s enthusiasm!
Good job !!
By the looks of the heads they are 3782461s or 3917291s Camel Hump heads some of the best stock SBC heads
Looks good mate
Thank you!
He said this engine is wack lmao I laughed so hard motomigs
That timing chain looks to stretched
Great work as always Migs! It looks like someone put an older cast iron crankshaft in that engine.i believe corvettes came with a forged crank but I could be wrong. I'll bet the damage in the pan is from the old crank failing.. Well hopefully lol you're getting better and better with each vid man great job!
Use aluminum valve covers, tin are prone to leak. Also good idea for a new pan.
Double roller timing set and a aluminum timing cover.
For the valve covers as a last ditch effort I would try steel wool with soapy water to take it off, then use tin/ aluminum foil with soapy water to help bring the chrome back and make it even
Change that timing chain
Did you happen to write down the last three numbers of the cylinder casting, it was between the rockers? i really likes the spacers they used under the motor mounts, very creative.
Change out the temporary soft plug under the motor mount you don't want that in there
First one at 21 seconds after it was posted
DEFINITELY put a new timing chain on that thing. Make it a good one and get some brass freeze plugs. Cheap insurance.
You should put new freeze plugs i see you have the rubber ones it would be better to do them all since its out of the car i recently got my block rebuilt but they didnt put new freeze plugs it’s pretty simple but you should change them.
honestly you might have to put an aftermarket oil pan on especially if anything is aftermarket in that engine
The engine on the engine stand is too top heavy, you should adjust the bolts holding the motor so that it sits as low as possible a good idea is to line up the camshaft with the center of the engine stand pipe or even a bit lower, make a world of difference...
Hey man love the c3, I'm an 81 c3 owner! the blue looks factory but you sould look on the block and see what the casting number is, maybe it's numerator, most likely not but I'm curious to see what it's says! usually infront of the passenger side cylinder head along the China wall of the intaje!
*numbers marching, *intake
let me watch the rest of the video lol I haven't finished the video yet, from te comments I've read maybe you've addressed that🤣🤣
I would replace the clutch why you have the motor out
to find what heads what heads you have , take off the valve covers, look for the numbers
Yo migs what happened to the nascar
Buy a one piece felpro pan gasket
your timing chain is worn out ! please use a quality double roller chain. the old nylon gear is not good. change the freeze plugs. the engine numbers are on the back of the block, and stamped in front
The dreadful orange paint

Let’s go!!
Nope too late I was first comment at 21 seconds when it was posted
Sheesh 🥲
AAHHHH! PAINT ON THE VALVE SPRINGS. Prolly not harmful but cringy
Dude, read your responses. People are trying to help.!
Broooooo you painted inside the engine🤦♂️
Brake cleen is all you need to restore an engine.
That engine looks like ass
I just watch way to many mistakes from this kid. My first suggestion is if you do not know the correct year of your car then step away and put down your tools. That is no way a 1974 corvette. If your title and vin match and it says it is then your cars bean altered and maybe stolen. 1974 did not have a hatch back rear glass they had a flat back glass like on 1968 thru 1977, the rear hatch started in 1978 so yours cannot be a 1974
In his first videos on the car he said that it's a "74" with an "80" body on it, personally I think that the car is just a 1980 that someone is illegally titling as a 1974 because he lives in an inspection state where if a vehicle is 1975 or older it's smog exempt which makes the car worth alot more than one that is not smog exempt, he really needs to search for VIN numbers on the frame and body to verify that all is good, most likely some shady work has been done to this car over the years.
Stop talking for 20 minutes every video about the same stuff
Bozo the only pleasure you ever experienced is from your right hand 🤣
