We bought the cheapest Ferraris in the UK! Ferrari 456 - 308 GTS

  • Two Ferraris, bought unseen, which cost less to buy than a highly specced family SUV. My friend Fergus also bought his Ferrari in lockdown, and his 456 was a similar price to my 308 and it's a four seater. Should I have thought harder before buying the InfluEnzo? I could have had a real Ferrari V12!!

The 308, I would say, is more true to what's expected in terms of classic Ferrari style and looks. Epitome of the late 70s and 80s.
The 456, I always loved it, very elegant, uncospicuous and understated. Formidable sober style, represents in my humble opinion the best Berlinetta (4 seater-ish) model Ferrari ever made.
Would be diffcult to choose between the two.

I like the 456 a lot. One of my favourites too as it looks like a modern Daytona. The modificato looks even better!
The 308 is more obviously (or more popular?) a Ferrari in design though and over the two, I would choose the 308.
I have also been put off by the potentially enormous bills following a service on a 456. :-)

I'm sure someone in the past several weeks or months someone commented or has suggested a Capristo exhaust system. Not sure if they make it for the 308. I believe that's the sound you're searching for. The other aftermarket exhaust you tried didn't "sing" like you wanted. It may be worth the money for the Capristo sound !!

That’s a very good analogy - that Peugeot was clearly “inspired by” this Ferrari 456. But the Ferrari 456 is a nice looking understated car all the same. The sound is very good too. I can see that under acceleration it pushes you back into the seat with all those G Forces. But dont get rid of your 308. It is a heck of a lovely car. Some people are saying: 'Go with the V12, no contest.' But I'll bet they haven't worked on one that's been stuffed into a cramped engine bay. It seems most V12s are actually a pair of independent inline-6 engines, working in concert. That means two complete but separate engine management and ignition systems, two water pumps, possibly two alternators, etc, etc. Replacement parts WILL be extremely expensive for a limited-production Ferrari V12, of course.
If that 456 is an OBDII (1996-later) vehicle, it only gets worse. It will have at least four wide-band O2 sensors, probably four catalytic converters, multiple knock sensors, fourteen injectors (two cold-start), a comprehensive evaporative emissions system, and a wide range of other complexities. Not to mention all the electronic goodies that can fail, like power seat motors, cruise control, automatic climate control, damper adjusters, and so on.
It may have cost only three grand more to buy, but it will be far more difficult and expensive to operate over a significant number of miles. My god, you paid 245 POUNDS for one Ferrari distributor cap and rotor set for the 308! An obscenity. Costs about $35 (~25 pounds) for my C4 Corvette. Even if you do the work yourself, which will be a truly annoying nightmare, the expense will be astonishing (if not downright sickening).
Meanwhile, you already have a beautiful 308. It's a completely analog car (the holy grail, right?), and dirt-simple. As of this writing, you are well along in sorting it out. With the second custom exhaust, its flat-plane V8 sounds brilliant. Is the V12 really so much better? The 456 is actually a bit sterile in comparison, anyway. Sure, it's faster, but the 308 lets you savor its character. The 456 gets you to 'go to jail' speed so quickly, it's hard to enjoy. Impressive isn't the same thing as fun. Ask Fred the Frog.

  • @robertngreen6

I had an mr2 sw20 for lots of years. It was based on the 308 the 348 and the 355.
It looked kinda like a ferrari and it had popup headlamps. (forever a bonus)
Mine had a T-top and full leather interior which made the ownership experience all the better.
Only 174BHP which was not the same as the Turbos that the US reviewed against the 348.
The car was very beautiful and quite fast and handled better than any car I'd driven up to that point.
Honestly I don't think I could could take a windy road any faster in my Z4 with 218BHP than the SW20 with 174bhp.
    It was incredibly agile.
It was my favourite car I've ever owned.
    Luv and Peace.

So, having had an older 308 (1979) for quite some time I have enjoyed your channel and your hands on approach to your trials and tribulations. I adore the little Ferrari and have had a plethora of other classic sports cars to compare it to without any regrets. Luckily I got mine with about 22K miles on it and as its still under 30K I've had very little problems with it. There is basically nothing on this car I can't fix myself which is just the way I like it. And yes the exhaust sound sucks.
My other favorite at the other end of the spectrum is the 456GT. Mine is Rosso Monza and truly a spectacular car by Ferrari standards of the day. I've it just North of 160MPH without feeling like it was even breathing hard. Its got a Capristo exhaust and absolutely nothing sounds like a F V12 on song.

I'm British, live in Canada. In Canada we have wide straight roads, and when I go back to the UK I am driven bat sh*t bonkers by the narrow winding roads that make up the entirety of the UK. If you do go onto what Canadians call a "highway" it's a parking lot in the UK, bumper to bumper traffic! I drive my Porsche on the HWY 400 Extension between Barrie Ontario and Parry Sound. It's like a track for sports cars. Two lanes, wide, and straight, and 100KM plus of road. I frequently "race" the guy in the Corvette or Mustang next to me. There is never any traffic.

Not all 456s were created equal. In 1996 the Bosch Motronic 5.2 engine management system was introduced. This was OBD2 compliant, so makes chasing engine gremlins a little easier and cheaper (not so intimidating). Many components are shared with BMWs, Volvos, etc. Also, the later M version (1998) of the 456 didn't have the earlier car's motorised rear underbody flap, which can present maintenance problems.

I ran a 308 GTS QV and a 456 GT together for almost 10 years. Sold the 308 when I got married in 2013. Much regretted that sale. Hope to bring my 456 silver lady to Istanbul one day. That will be a road trip.I wish that I could post a pic of the pair.

I think the 456 is a beautiful thing. But it shouldn't bottom out on ordinary roads so it may have been lowered, or the electronic dampers may have an issue. The steering I found fine, and Ferrari had been putting power steering into cars for 20 years before the 456 so it should be pretty well tuned. I haven't heard of any electronic fix to lighten the steering, and if as I believe it's purely hydraulic with no speed sensitivity or other ECU input that seems unlikely. If you want a list of what can go wrong, ask Ratarossa! But as with both cars if you find one that's been taken care of it will give fewer expensive surprises. But you pay for the privilege of course.

456 is the car I reckon Enzo would have driven as a daily - understated, quick, pretty and comfortable - I read he loved his 400 coupe so very much a modern version of the same?

The 308 is an outrageously pretty car. Classic Ferrari.

Both cars are stunning. The 308 should stay in red, but please please remove the fog light covers. Great videos.

The 308 is the best hand built street race car hands down.. If you want that F1 sound go straight pipes all the way back 😯 I would rebuild the suspension to stiffen the roll..

  • @pierre-emmanuelaugustin2970

dreamed of a 308 gts since a teenager..and get a 456 ! opportunity of a low mileage/manual/documented...bla vla and getiing older. I love it but exhaust is disappointing. What type of exhaust modification is on your friend 456?

Interesting observations and comparison. I like the idea of the 456 as the mile muncher but the complexity...? A guy in the US is putting the v12 in a 308 (I think..). Next project for you.

My Tesla has just about as much driver assistance as a car can possibly have, but I confess there are times I miss my 83 Camaro Z28. It’s not that I like burning gasoline, there’s just something to be said about the analog experience that’s missing. I know you didn’t have the option at the time, but I still think you made the right choice. Your car’s cool factor makes any shortcomings easy to overlook.

I did not realize that the shape of the 456 wasn't loved by everyone! After the Ferrari 275GTB4 and the 250GT Luzzo (complete with rear live axle) the 456 is my next favorite Ferrari. That beautiful shape graced the opening credits of the original Top Gear. Very controversially (now back off everyone) I also have a soft spot for the 308GT4.

Talking Of Ferraris that divide opinion, I've always liked the 365/400/412 but most people seem to dislike them, I think they're beautiful to look at esp. from behind. Fwiw I'd have the 456 but would not be bothered either way if, irl, u gave me the choice.

The 456 is understated a subtle beauty, it shouts out under the hood! Probably far more reliable than the 308!

Steering feel won’t be helped by those 360 wheels- the fronts are far too narrow. They were narrow on the 360, and that didn’t have a great big v12 in its nose.

  • @webspaghetti

The 456 is the most understated Ferrari I think. Very classy. A proper grand tourer as opposed to the 308 which is a sports car. I'd struggle to choose between them. Horses for courses, no pun intended.
