Hey Jack. Magnum 308GTS is absolutely gorgeous, and that sound. Setting up those carbs would be a nightmare in the wrong hands. I reckon with another £20k you will have a superb example. Looks a little like the 288 GTO from the front in your garage. Hope it all goes to plan for you. I have a great test review against a 3.2 Carrera of same year on the bookshelf, so will be getting that out for a read now.

RE: parts prices. I'm sure you're already aware, but check out Ratarossa, he quite often cross references parts or points out very good independent sources. He's also restored a couple of 308's. I've found him quite useful for future tips. Good luck with the car. This is the one that got me noticing Ferrari.

First thing I would do is get on and do a wet and dry compression test. Don't run the engine anymore until you know exactly what is causing your oil burning situation. It wouldn't surprise me if if it's not the rings but your valve seats. It sounds like it's missing some cylinders, and a missing firing order, with burning oil under hot conditions will generally point to a cracked/pitted/split seat. If it was the rings only I'd expect the misfire to get less and less as the engine warmed up, but you may have a combo of the two (sometimes a small bit of piston ring can break off, and whack the edge of the valve seats as it exits the exhaust, quite common on over-revving situations) . So do that 1st. If your compression tests are not bringing any conclusive evidence, I would then focus on the carbs, make sure they are fuelling correctly, as sometimes over fuelling can look like oil burning under some circumstances. But my 1st point of call, compression test!
i am a mechanic and what i would do is replace the distributor cap and leads then i would do a compression test, dont trust a compression test completely then i would do a leakage test you can do this if you have a compressor simply take a old spark plug and break the porcelain out the plug and braze a piece of pipe on to it and fit a hose and attach to the compressor and get the individual cylinders to top dead center and fill with air and check how much is coming out the carbs and exhaust and dipstick tube then you know where the problem is weather its valves or rings.

What a lovely video- don’t worry about the engine just yet- fresh fuel and oil, get the electrics all working properly- window lifter mod/instrument binnacle and fuseboard mods done, change the brake fluid and check out all the suspension and brakes, get the switches all working and cable releases greased etc. Plenty to do in lockdown before looking at the engine. If the car is not rusty and is straight and complete and everything on it works, then you have a good car. As others have said about the engine these are not stupidly complex cars and eminently diyable.

That looks like a great car. I wouldn't worry about the smoke - at least not yet. It's been stood for ages, so I'd expect the rings to be a bit sticky which would cause that smoke. As you suggested, I'd go for a decent run in it and get some load into the engine. Of all the cars I've owned I have never had one which hated standing as much as my 308. Run it a bit and I bet it'll be fine. Oh - and that zip cover for the luggage area is standard 👍

Hi! Looking at the smoke, and the incredible amount of carbon on your spark plugs...I rather think it’s running way too rich. Those carbs need a serious clean and adjust. I’m not there to see and smell and feel it up close...but I think that is more likely your problem than rings.

Hi, The smoke does not look dramatically light blue, which would be a positive indication that the bores are scored or worn. It looked darker to me, which might point more towards either the carbs need setting up correctly & balancing, as it might be running way too rich on idle, or it might be worth checking all of the pipe work associated with the crank case ventilation system as well. Also check the oil level and ensure its not been overfilled. Check all of the plugs as a sure sign of one cylinder is burning oil as well....... As others have said it needs a good run as well.

Speaking from experience, I bought a 308 in 1984 it was only a couple years old. It is well known, and it was relevant to my car that it burnt a pint of oil every 100 miles, and this was normal in the Ferrari world with a 308. You could be in for a big expense because my engine started smoking but it was not oil it was water. I had the heads off and the valve seats done but it still smoked with water. Unfortunately for me it was too late and it had hydraulic lock filling one of the bores with water bending a piston. This resulted in an engine rebuild, I gave it to a top bloke to do, told him I was not in any rush - 10 years later I got the car back, £15,000 poorer. I realised I had grown out of this type of car and sold a mint 308 GTB in 2003 for a grand total of £20,000.

bung in some good quality two stroke , ideally with fresh petrol , and run one tank through it , anything thats layen about for a while , I swear by a shot of two stroke . Run that through it then an oil change so you know whats actually in there , then time to look for smoke etc.
and id not be starting it without the air box without a fire extinguisher to hand , be very careful on that one ,
its a great looking car , be nicer if the steering wheel was on the correct side of course.
Hey, have extinguishers to hand 🖐! But unless there are perished hoses it should safe enough. Loads of cars run Weber’s without air boxes! Happy holidays and thanks for the advice!
@@Number27 looking at the coughs back up through the carbs .. until they settle. .. be wary of them ... I know the two stroke sounds odd .. but for sticky rings and gummy valves even sticky Carb floats .. its the ticket ...

I have a ‘78 chassis #26613. I just purchased it last September for $32,500 US. Its condition is very similar to yours with 75,000 miles, a few nicks & scratches, minor rust bubbles, and a little smoke out the tail pipes. The way I see it, I can drive it! I don’t have to worry about getting a scratch, (not that I want one) but I get to experience what a Ferrari is all about! Driving it! I don’t believe in owning a garage queen and the experience is going out to the garage and looking at it. Ferrari’s are for the road, foot down and grabbing gears!

Congrats on the 308! Check all the basics before you go internal. New cap, rotor, plugs & leads (no yours are NOT in good shape - a few are missing the seals!) plus carb service should clear up that smoke and make her run much better! Happy motoring!!

One of my favourite car the 308. But £34,000 the cheapest in the UK..is still expensive..lo e the colour. But rip off parts, servicing etc and reliability are major concerns. This is were we in the UK and Europe dont get value for our money. If you compare it with a Corvette C5 or even a C4 ZR1 you get more for your money and bulletproof V8 Corvette engine. The ZR1 has much better performance than the Ferrari and wont cost the earth. I'd go for the C5 Corvette in the coupe or Z06 form which again has better performance than the ferrari and cheaper to buy or run. The C5 is very similar in looks too. The key on the Ferrari..costs £1000's ..hmmm theres your problem..you dont get more for paying more..Lovely car..but the practicality isnt there. Some of these 308's in different spec go for up to £100,000 which is ridiculous. Good luck.

Congratulations for your purchase! Assuming it's a steel body .... It should run a compression ratio of 9.2:1 (135psi) (unless its not imported from the US) ... if it is then it would be 8.6:1 (126psi). Seems like oil smoke .... These engines are pretty good but they do tend to suffer from valve burn ... or piston ring fail.... hence a drop in compression. Was it very hard to fire up ? ... Before thinking of that ... there is way too much valve noise coming from the top covers. Check the valve clearances and then do a compression test and see how it goes. Before that check for head gasket symptoms (however these are more unlikely on such engines) check for bubbling in the radiator... water / oil mix) ... and check if the car has been topped up with water rather than coolant .... if the coolant has not been changed after a number of years it does turn corrosive ... so if you have some service history check it out. .... Lastly bore/rings.... pull out the plugs and put in a camera into the piston , see if any of the pistons have oil on top ... turn the free engine (without plugs) by hand and check the cylinder walls .... ... these led cameras are pretty cheap on ebay ... buy one that has good lighting and resolution... .. Lastly have you tried turning it by hand without any plugs in it before firing it up for the first time? These cars make for good do it yourself projects..... if the engine needs to be pulled out it would be the perfect opportunity to pump up the horsepower! Good luck!

Hi great vid , from the view on my screen that smoke looks grey , I think know matter how much you run and get it hot in the garage it won’t clear , if it’s not been running right and also been shunted about the storage facility it’s got well choked up , I think/ hope a good “power de-coke “ will do it the world of good , good luck 😉

My experience with Ferrari ownership they don't like not being used. You mentioned that for the past few years it has had little use.
My suggestion would be to look at those carburettors, check the mixture/balance etc. Change the oil and filter, use quality oil - I personally use Shell Helix Ultra, replace the oil and air filters with genuine Ferrari units, replace rotor arm and cap - Again genuine Ferrarri , then take it for a long run, ensure you bring the car up to temperature before being too aggressive, for a minimum of 80 to 100 miles, with short sections of hard
acceleration.
If the smoking still persists, it's engine out - check for broken rings? Or enter the car into the next classic car auction!

Original stem seals work harden and get baggy and will need replacing . But so will the guides, and the fix will be short lived if you do one without the other. Getting the heads off will be easier engine out and I'd suggest you look into viton seals and also a change to stainless exhaust valves to replace the sodium filled ones, which are known to fail.

I would have started out with the following:
-oil change with the addition of LM leak stop
-500mls and another oil change
Worn valve seals would usually start to improve by that time.
Smoke is not necessarily coming from worn rings.

It didn't look like blue smoke to me, so that would indicate it just needs a good tune up, would deffo be worth while doing a compression test and a leak down test after you've taken it for a good run, who knows how old the fuel in the tank is as well!

Cheap but you got the right one -> one of the last Ferraris with carburetors. I used to have a '69 GTV 2000 with two Dellortos, but your four Webers are way better! Given that this lockdown will last at least one more month, you've got the time to fix the car and keep us posted...

Great update. Could be multitude of reasons for smoking. Might have had oil applied into bores during storage or rings gummed up. As you say a decent run would do her good. Compression test and borescope inspection would assist. Have you seen the "Ratarossa" CZcams channel? The guy Scott is a font of knowledge on these cars and currently recommissioning a very tired USA spec 308. Maybe worth reaching out for some pointers and discussion? All the best. The way it reluctantly fired up and was putting out black smoke implies carb adjustment or wear to me. I think your next move should be a compression check to rule out bore wear and give you some piece of mind. Bore wear or stuck rings would give blue smoke, and mostly under load. Valve guides also blue smoke, but on the overrun with a closed throttle. I think your engine’s ok, but ignition and carburisation need work. Good luck!

The car looks fantastic, one of my favourite models. If the car has been sitting for a while, then it definitely needs a good run and may also need a carb tune to get rid of the smoke if it is running too rich. Enjoy!

I’m absolutely NOT a fan of Ferrari, but that looks to be on the face of it a very straight car, I know nothing of its history, but it is approaching 40 years of age. How long had it stood? How old is the fuel? Given the smoke from cold, I would say it looks like stem wear / seals as a worst case. What did you expect for £31k plus costs? A mint survivor? - that ain’t going to happen! Drive it thoroughly before drawing any conclusions - otherwise I think it was a very well presented vid - keep it up - this is just the start of the journey 😉

If the carburettors have not been calibrated for a while they can run very rich and cause bore wash. Might be worth getting a gas analyser on it or something similar.
Enjoyed the video, I like the honesty. Even if the engine needs work it’s a beautiful car to be very proud of so don’t be disheartened. I’m sure a Ferrari independent would do a rebuild for much less than £20k.
Who knows you might get lucky, if the compression test is ok, it may just be old hard valve stem oil seals. A good opportunity to lap the valves and give the heads a slight skim to restore a little lost horsepower that are inevitable over the years.

Change the oil (and filter) to Motul 300V 4T 15W-60. Check the ignition timing (spitting back through the carbs is only ever ignition or cam timing and it wont be cam!), check what the jets are currently in the carbs and buy a selection of (smaller) main and idle jets for the Weber's, and try road testing them. I am green with envy, enjoy, and I hope it comes good for you!

That is a nice car. And all the nicer for it being such a good price. Well done! Just spent the morning on my own, finishing off the fitting of a new stainless front exhaust manifold. I’ve been through all the pain you’re going to have in days to come but let me just say that every time I have imagined my credit card sailing down the pan, it hasn’t turned out half as bad as I thought it would. They are actually very well built machines. As one or two other people have mentioned, do a compression test first and take it from there, but those Webers really take some setting up. I’d take a punt that your smoke is not so much oil as fuel. Carb rebuild kits are reasonably priced and you can do them yourself with a little patience. The timing might need a little attention too. I paid to have my carbs set up by a specialist but only after I’d done all the donkey rebuild work. Owned mine for 20+ years, so I might be able to help if you’re banging your head on the floor. Drop me a line if you get to that point

I recently bought a Mondial T - think I went through the same range of emotions as you leading up to picking the car up, but like yours mine is rust free, it does have a lot of the usual Ferrari electrical issues, but I’m good with electrical stuff - good luck with your project!!

Oh how times have changed. Bought my 85 QV gts in San Diego in 2001 for $39k 21k miles unheard of 1 owner, always have 10 owners plus. Took it back to UK. Buyer from France bought it in 2008 for £25 k of me. They were not that quick or great to drive ,but boy they looked good, had a daily driver 86 carrara then at same time way faster car than it. Dyno it when you get it running good, you will be shocked at power output nowhere near what Ferrari quote. Don't worry about mileage, engines are strong. Change oil, you will find sump full of fuel from storage cold starts. Timing belts change a piece of cake on these. Enjoy it though there not that great a car to drive Sell it quickly then Ferrari and Porsche market has got to crash there way over valued at the moment,that's really a 15k car in sensible times running percent with orginal colour.

One of my favourite cars... Grew up loving these and Ferrari’s in general. My favourite number is 27 too, in honour of Gilles.. Can’t wait to see the update after your Sainsbury’s run...
Fabulous car...just love watching your journey...keep it going. I have been there myself with by 308 QV and have had so many worrying times but have come through and I am still really enjoying the car. I am well past the stage of thinking this this is Ferrari and therefore things are expensive to fix and you need to be a specialist. Ownership is very easy. CZcams is a mine of information also.
Put some carb cleaner through it, change oil & filter and a new fuel filter and see what it does. May be valve guide seals?
Let’s see.. next video will be a run to the supermarket! I am eating at twice the rate I normally do so I need to make a trip out ASAP!
Don't panic about the smoking --- yet. The F106 does have a tendency to be a little on the smokey side esp if running rich (and looking at the plugs as much as you can on a video they do look black). But don't over lean it! These cars do benefit from a decent Italian tune up so hopefully Sainsbury's will help, and you may discover how hot the boot can get behind the engine and over the exhaust... on the subject of which = nice to see one with the original single pipe exhaust. Keep it that way and appreciate the sound of the air being sucked into those carbs. Sometimes a good suck's better than a blow.
Can't tell from the video but is the fuel pump kicking in when you switch the ignition on?
Paint bubbling is interesting IF it's original paint. There was an issue with the paints in late 70 early 80s where there was a certain patina in the paint... that would reduce in the warm !

I worked on a lot of old Alfas and Ferraris. Most smoke like mad if laid up for a long time. Drain the old fuel, put some fresh 98 octane in. Change the oil to some good 20w 50with zink in it . If you don´t know anything about the age and type of oil I would definitely change the oil. It is the cheapest investment you can do. Warm it up and gradually pile on the rews. I am almost positive it will be fine. This is normal for an old Ferrari that has been standing. Best of luck!

Rings and valve guides are the usual culprits. A compression test is a cheap way of checking the rings and the good old fashioned Italian tune-up may improve things if the car hasn't been used properly for a while. If it's valves that is more worrying as carbon build up on the stems can lead them to stick down, and this is an interference engine! As for parts, many of the ancillaries were widely used around the Fiat group and elsewhere so OEM bits are often available without the Ferrari mark up, with a bit of research. When Ferrari told me parts were no longer available for the aircon on my 308 I discovered it was actually American and spares could be had in a couple of days.

Change oil and filter use Castrol Edge 10/60. Check oil pressure before and after do a few hundred miles if the oil still dirty change oil again. Worth a try. I owned a 308GTS for over 35 years it never smoked. Good luck.

That actually does not look to bad at all. From the video it does not look to me like it's burning excessive oil or water really. Just looks like the thing has been standing for at least a couple of years and hasn't had proper maintenance the years before that.
Have you had a look at the petrol that's in it?
It just runs rough. Personally i think it will be fine when it's had some proper maintenance, a good sonic carb clean and some oil, fresh gas and a tune by someone who knows these cars.
Especially do the carbs properly, use a sonic bath with hot/warm soapy water or degreaser and new gaskets and o-rings and all. Or have it done professionally.
I'd guess those carbs and the ignition system is why it runs like a dog and it smokes like that.
Just my 2 cents. Never did anything with ferraris but patched up my fair share of old beaters and had cars run like this that ran like new after a bit of love and maintenance.
Ps: do a compression test before you do anything else. Just to make sure ;).
Also, if a car has a loose chain or the belt skipped a tooth and the timing is off it also smokes like that.
I really think it is some sort of combustion issue, no or weak spark (wrong sparkplugs!), false air, dirty carbs etc. etc.
Probably a combination of all.

@@rockonthelough5417 in the end a car is a car, they all work the same. Not much has changed the last 100 years, they just added a boatload of electronics to it.
That being said, it still is nerve wrecking working on stuff like this ;) But i guess that is more because if you break something it costs an arm and a leg to replace it. The local scrapper usually doesn't have 80s ferrari parts on the shelves and on ebay everything costs silly money usually.
But the reward is worth it once it eventually all comes together.
Hmm, if there's water in the oil that would not be good. Lets hope that isn't the case. It will be dirty i think
I hope i'm right and it really is just minor maintenance stuff and he can drive it around in a couple of weeks. I guess we'll find out next week or so.

I remember years ago being in a RHD Ferrari 308 quattrovalvole that my dad looked after for his friend. Got so many people looking and coming up to you to ask about the car in traffic. Think the car sold for £25k fully working. Guy who bought it picked it up in an old smiley faced transit flatbed that was worth a tenth of the car 😂. Bet he regrets selling it now after how much they are.

A new distributer cap will improve spark and reduce un-burnt fuel, and in turn reduce smoke. Change the plugs and oil at the same time and majority of smoke will disappear. Car needs a new exhaust, Tubi's are best on Ferrari's. Bite the bullet and pay the money for them with full headers to tips. You will thank me later!

Little use over many years, lack of servicing, probably lots of short starts/stops and no proper runs. I bet a good service, new oil, plugs etc., and a good run will sort it.

Good job on at least getting it running Jack. Definitely worth a run out in it if possible and after that I would do a Cylinder Leak Down test before spending any more money on it. If that produces some good numbers then a full service would be next on the list. From where I'm sitting she looks bang tidy though!

Compression test if you think its the rings....i reckon it might be valve seals...off with the head and down to a good specialist. ..should not be that expensive...good luck i have got my fingers crossed for you !

Congrats for the Ferrari. No matter the value, those were the cars when Ferrari was still alive and they were largely built by hand. Also the body style will never bore you, which can't be said for many models, especially recent ones.

Smoke could be the headgaskets right? I wouldn’t be scared of taking off the heads myself and change them, it’s not rocket science after all, just like a Fiat twin cam doubled. Just get the heads skimmed of course, no big cost there

Number 27 good luck whipping the heads off these! They are renowned for being hard to remove due to corrosion between the heads and studs.

Ok engine expert here , if that old enzos been run coughing and farting then chances are it's got crap in the rings and on top of the pistons , I'd put some seafoam innit or redex and run it through or compression test it first thing first .
I've actually had cars go down on a cylinder and been run and when the cause been fixed it's still not run right then as if by magic it's sprung into life .same thing with turbo engines too ..anyway subscribed to the cheepo Enzo ... *Ciao*
