Yeah, it's a huge thing isn't it- I recently comp tested my Lotus 2.0 liter and was so happy to read a decent 160 across the board. Bad reading means messed up valve seats or piston rings, really bad news. Not having to go into the engine is so nice. Leakdown will show more info on the valve sealing and piston sealing over time, it's something to consider.
I was there with you, it's the Schrödinger dead/alive moment when your fate is sealed in the blink of an eye. Totally stoked for you. Carb refurb pah!! Nice result.
Tip: I have a one quarter inch thick sheet of plywood that is 48 inches long by 18 inches wide that I lay on the seal over the zippered boot cover and it serves as a work table when I'm messing with the engine. It will save your back because you can actually lean on it with your elbows. I covered it with some indoor/outdoor carpet and you can screw some lengths of half inch dowel to the bottom that will protrude inside the lip of the seal and keep it from sliding around. It will make engine work much more pleasant.

Strangely, I have been a mechanic for nearly 49 years working on diesels and petrols of every kind and yet, I have never bothered with compression testing and don't even own a tester, always relying on my judgment when diagnosing faults as there are always other symptoms when compression is lost. Only recently started watching your channel but was on the edge of my seat right there with you and so pleased for you. I laughed with joy when it was 150+. Really enjoying this journey with you. Thanks for sharing.
Oil pan fix: depending on how it’s attached...when you put a new gasket on the pan, you need a “run out kit” which is like a tap set, but less aggressive, to clean up threads inner and outer (the kits have male and female for nuts and bolts). You also need to use brake clean and air on each thread or hole....and clean the run outs after each use or you’ll transfer rust and gum up threads. If it takes nuts over studs...new nuts...cleaned up studs....this will allow you to torque them correctly and evenly...do not over tighten....and should stop the leaks. I restore Porsche 928’s which have an oil pan that requires removing the frame cross brace...so it’s imperative to be meticulous, but done right...and as ze Germans intended...it is leak free and should be for years to come.
Ah mate, that really made me smile, thank you Jack! Impressed with all the little fixes that you have done so far and well done for just rolling up your sleeves and getting on with it! Looking forward to seeing the next video.
All 308 from cold have tight 2nd gear, my 20k mile one did the same, most others Ferrari’s from that time were the same. Always go 1st to 3rd till box warm then it should be perfect. I don’t think your out off the woods yet on no3 cylinder. Do a leak down test on 3. Pull dipstick and listen for air to see if it’s getting past rings, you could have cracked compression ring. If it’s carb the other cylinder running of that carb would be rich as well I would have thought. I am keeping my fingers crossed for you, hopefully all ok
i have a tr 512 , and i have to switch from 1st to 3rd , too, when the gearbox ist cold , after 10 minutes of driving no 2 is going in smoothly .... but when its not warmed up, no 2 is not going in , under nooooooo circumstances !!!!!!!
@@Number27 Its a bit hard to hear on the video, but the sound of the car and your power looks like its running on 7.5 cylinders. Means the cylinders on the back row should be fine, do you know when the valves was adjusted?
I don’t even understand mechanics and compression testing but such is the presenter’s expressions I end up enjoying these videos immensely. Can’t wait for the next episode!
Very happy to see the results of your compression test . I’ve wanted to own one of these since I was a child. but in the meantime I’ll live vicariously thru your videos. Cheers and continued success!
Awesome series! I absolutely love Influenzo and The old Magnum PI series. That is where my love for Ferrari’s started and to see you working on this really makes my heart pump Red!! Keep the videos coming please and good luck man...
So love your ferrari journey, this 308 is my childhood poster car, was so happy for you in cylinder 3, can't wait for the next episode, your such a down to earth CZcams, great content 👍👌
THAT IS EPIC NEWS ON YOUR COMPRESSION TEST I WAS SO PLEASED FOR YOU BUDDY, I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL IT'S SO NICE TO SEE TRUE CAR PASSION AND YOUR FERRARI IS GORGEOUS , LOVE YOUR ATTITUDE ,TAKE CARE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR NEXT VID ALL THE BEST!!!!!
I was so pleased to see that the engine is ok! I love these cars and I have been looking forward to seeing you get this one all sorted out. Great news!
Great news. Very brave performing this test in public and putting yourself out there. I feel your joy...good watching during the lockdown. I have used an ultrasonic cleaner for cleaning carbs and you would not believe how much dirt comes out. The results are always really pleasing. A new set of seals and bushes and it performs like new.
Number 27 as a highly qualified armchair mechanic..if the mixture adjustment is common across both chokes, perhaps the mixture could have been made over rich to compensate for a blocked jet on the other choke?
Your reaction to the pressure test on cylinder 3 epitomises how we all feel working on our cars some days! That moment of pure relief, like you know how to easily fix it! Golden! Can’t wait to see the carb go in and see if it fixes it!! Come on INFLUENZO!!
Made me smile, I’m happy for you! I’m also jealous, you’re driving a real machine not sat in a device insulated from the experience. It sounds lovely. I ride older motorcycles for the same reason.
So happy for you on compression test. This will be a great series. I personally love fixing cars. Feels great to restore them back to their glory. My 993 spent 2 months on jack stands as I redid everything. Not cheap, but have a great car now with a known baseline. I learned every bolt on the car. Spent 30+ hrs steam cleaning the bottom of the car on my back. Looks brand new now and know where every leak was coming from.
Fantastic Jack, I was so happy for you when I saw the needle go to 150PSI on cylinder 3, totally understand the joy when you checked the gauge! Loving the series on the InfluEnzo :D
Absolute joy to see you so happy with the result of the compression test... Love love love these cars....best of luck with it keep making the videos they’re brilliant!
Very brave AND very knowledgable, so admire your fortitude on this one, an absloute frightener to most but you making these fantastic videos and doing a superb job are making these days go so much faster! So well done, keep up the good work, we are with you all the way!
Really enjoying the series and look forward to each one. Due to the situation I'm watching all ads on CZcams to help you guys earn what you can, but 2.5 minutes of ads in a 12 minute video is a bit much. Apart from that, loving it!
Congratulations mate. That is great news. Carbies are a pain in the ass, but at least even worst case and you have to replace a carb (which I would think is unlikely), it is nothing like the cost of an engine rebuild. Well done.
Cracking news, Grommet! Its great to ride along on this voyage of discovery. A friend of mine recommends always doing something that fulfills your needs for discovery and adventure, along with everything else that's important in life. From your reactions we can see how that works for you with this project.
I have always wanted a 328 gts but have always been hesitant because of the maintenance and inherent repair costs. After watching you work on this car I am realizing that I can work on the car myself. I have a feeling now that one will be sitting in my driveway afterall! Thank you for inspiring me!!
It’s so refreshing and heartwarming to see something good happen to someone whose livelihood and choices really might depend on one possible bad day. Please understand I mean this in the best possible way. I can’t articulate it properly. It just makes me root for you even more compared to someone who can just throw £££ at a problem. Congrats!
Awesome videos. I feel like I shared the joy with you even though I had no skin in the game. It’s funny that we saw the answer to cylinder number 3 before you did. I love to watch videos like Jay Leno’s Garage, but it is extra special to watch a regular guy work on a vehicle the average person could realistically buy some day. Not everyone can afford “an Italian guy” as a car mechanic. It looks like the carb, how awesome. I think I would rebuild all of the carbs at the same time. I am assuming it has two or three. We have all had one, at least one, of those moments when we think it may be a 5K or 10K issue, then it is something lesser. Can’t wait for the next video! The anticipation. God speed!

Much love from Colorado, USA. I watch a lot of Hoovie, Tavarish and good old Doug D love this channel and the classic Ferrari 308!!! I hope to see more videos
Wow! That’s great news. I’m so glad you have good compression. Not much to do to the ignition so I guess you have to sort out that carb now. You’re getting me excited to find my own influenzo.
Number 27 It’s gonna be because of you if I do. You seem so enthusiastic about your car! With all this CV-19 crap it’s really got me thinking I’ve always wanted one! Since you actually respond to me I’ve gotta tell you I love your name for the car Influenzo.
And that's the beauty of classic cars , the joy you can get from something not being as broken as you suspected it was . Was nervous for you man , so glad it's ok . Great video 👍 thanks . Ps : the magnum music had a touch of Outrun feel to it , love it 👍
Overhaul the carbs. You can get a rebuild kit from superformance for pennies really. The old fuel goes syruppy and clogs the jets. When you have got the carb off remove the jets soak them in solvent then blow air through them to check they are clear. I've had to resolve to pushing wire from a wire brush up the jet to get the gunk out. Then clean all the reservoirs out and make sure you have good new fuel in the tank.
Awesome reaction Jack! Only a true gear head would have that reaction. If I lived in the UK I'd def come and help you :) keep the videos coming. Great job.
Great video and a great relief I’m sure. I once had a similar problem due to camshaft lobe excessive wear. Worth you checking you’re getting full valve lift on #3. Good luck!
Rebuilding the Weber IDF's isn't too hard. It seems like you need to make sure your idle jets are set right and clean, insuring the main choke and aux is in good shape. They don't usually need too much of any bench work and can be gone through in a day of work. I cleaned my DCOE's out recently and it really helped, plus it's easy for you with a stock setup. Make sure the floats are set right and the valve that sets the float height is in good shape. Have you balanced the carbs yet?
@@Number27 I mean internally balance. There are two types of balancing- between carbs and inside the carb. The air bypass screw controls this. One of my DCOE's had an awful imbalance causing very rich running on one cylinder. It's checked the same way, using a balance gauge. If it's not that it can be verified quickly.
Excellent news had my fingers crossed everything was going to be ok and it is ! Definitely a carb or electrical issue. Well done was as happy as you are. Brilliant keep us updated lovin this 👍
Since I was 7 I thought this car was the most beautiful car ever made. I still think it today. Evergreen lines that will look as good in 100 years as they do today. Just stunning. Great news on the comp test! My hunch was carb too!
Absolutely delighted for you,, mate. I know that feeling when you can move issues from the "need to sell a kidney" list to the "annoying but fixable" one.
You will still want to know why #3 is different to prevent potential damage - carby, valve stem seals... who knows what it is but it looks like you're on a winner. For it's age your 308 is amazing, thanks for the vid looking forward to more and best of luck :D
Just found your channel and I'm working through the back catalogue. You have a great car there - the sweet spot between being affordable but very, very, tidy. On a slight;y less positive note, I only briefly saw the underside of the car and what I thought I saw was a great swathe of old-style underseal. That can hide all sorts of horrors so I would give it a very critical review to check for anything loose and possible rust underneath.
I was holding my breath with you. Missed my chance to get a 308 a few years back when we remortgaged and my wife selfishly wouldn't let me buy one for 30k. Excellent videos all the best.
I got so excited when I saw that needle on the comp gauge go over the 150 mark on cyl 3 I nearly jumped out my chair...lol....glad it went all well for you, going to be a easy fix
Pretty sure that I stumbled across this channel through JayEmm 🤔. Now subscribed as this has really got me interested. I am no mechanic but recently had to get an engine swap on my old Rover P5B which, coincidentally, was only firing on 7 cylinders. The swap was by far the easiest option lol. Looking forward to the next upload and seeing it running properly 👍.
I am not a mechanic, but this is what i would do. Check fuel filter, spark plug gap, spray at least 2 cans of carburetor cleaner down each carb and add some fuel system cleaner in the gas tank. Once again I am not a mechanic so take this with a grain of slat, they are just ideas. Hope this helps good luck and great videos !
Congratulations on dodging a serious bullet! really enjoy these videos. Was quite worried for you after seeing the previous video. I would definitely bet its a carburettor problem. A good cleanup should do the trick, the jets are most likely gummed up from storage, the floats might also have to be re-set and they could do with a sync and you should be golden! If you don't have a Carbtune to check the sync, a quick and ballpark method is to get an infrared thermometer (20 quid from Amazon and much more accurate than your hand 😉) and check the manifold branch temps and adjust each carb so all temps match up. Can't wait to see more vids on the Influenzo!
This reminds me of my old Matra Murena I used to sit in the boot to get the plugs out! Glad it's not looking serious, will look out for this you have been on my local roads.
Only a gear-head would fully understand your joy after the compression reading.
Great news indeed!
Exactly!! Thanks buddy!

@gillan64Hmnn.. . Interesting. You seem to have had such experience.
Yeah, felt it too.
gillan64 so there’s still bad news like it was a 2nd guy in the threesome (i.e. that cylinder is still not firing)?
Loved the reaction and relief to that pesky cylinder 3 compression test.
Heart warming to see someone so happy. Good luck with the project.
Thanks Mark!!
Yeah must agree heart stopping moment but fantastic news glad it wasnt a bad cylinder now it's just a case of sorting out the carbs 👍
A true moment of joy for you seeing the compression is good, Congrats

I lose count of the number of compression tests I've done over the years - never have I been as joyous as you over one! :)
Not many have I think!!
Strangely, I have been a mechanic for nearly 49 years working on diesels and petrols of every kind and yet, I have never bothered with compression testing and don't even own a tester, always relying on my judgment when diagnosing faults as there are always other symptoms when compression is lost. Still very happy that this one is good as there are a lot of scare stories out there, would have been interesting to watch a rebuild though.

@Lookup2Wakeup it leaks because it was designed that way then? LOL....idk?!?!
Dan Garner, it’s a very clever rust prevention system.
...so the right torque on the Porsche would be:
"Gut und Tite"
Jah?
Sorry...... I'll let myself out

Much love from Colorado, USA. I watch a lot of Hoovie, Tavarish and good old Doug D love this channel and the classic Ferrari 308!!! I hope to see more videos
Hey that is so great to hear.. thanks for subbing and nice to have a pal in Colorado!!
Wow! That’s great news. I’m so glad you have good compression. Not much to do to the ignition so I guess you have to sort out that carb now. You’re getting me excited to find my own influenzo.
Buy one Tracy!!!!
Number 27 It’s gonna be because of you if I do. You seem so enthusiastic about your car! With all this CV-19 crap it’s really got me thinking I’ve always wanted one! Since you actually respond to me I’ve gotta tell you I love your name for the car Influenzo.
I actually held my breath just before you did number 3, we’ll happy for you mate
Cheers bignose!!
The shear joy on your face has made my day Jack!
Thank you buddy!!
And that's the beauty of classic cars , the joy you can get from something not being as broken as you suspected it was .
Was nervous for you man , so glad it's ok .
Great video 👍 thanks .
Ps : the magnum music had a touch of Outrun feel to it , love it 👍
Thanks Andy... honestly I was just so happy!!
Will do Nathan, thanks!
I felt for you and REALLY shared that moment of pure joy. GREAT update.
Congrats on cylinder 3...fingers crossed for the backside cylinders!!
Thank you!!
Been saying from your second video that this car had carburettor problems and I still stand by it.
Let’s see if you’re right!
Good luck!
Thanks Damien!!
Will balance them once I get that cylinder working properly!
Love that last 30 seconds of the video, your excitement was felt alway over here in Australia. Haha 🙂 congrats mate.
Hey buddy!! Thanks 🙏 and my best to Australia 🇦🇺. Been to Perth and Melbourne and love both! As well as Mighty Cat Mods of course!
$15K back in your pocket!! Congrats, that was fun to watch.
Thanks buddy!!!
I was genuinely pleased for you when got those readings! Appreciate how that must havwe felt! Well done :)
Excellent news had my fingers crossed everything was going to be ok and it is ! Definitely a carb or electrical issue.
Well done was as happy as you are.
Brilliant keep us updated lovin this 👍
Thank you for the kind words!!
Since I was 7 I thought this car was the most beautiful car ever made. I still think it today. Evergreen lines that will look as good in 100 years as they do today. Just stunning. Great news on the comp test! My hunch was carb too!
Great stuff!! 😃😃
Absolutely delighted for you,, mate. I know that feeling when you can move issues from the "need to sell a kidney" list to the "annoying but fixable" one.
Thank you!!
Really enjoyable series of videos. Your cylinder 3 joy put a big smile on my face.
I recently discovered your channel and am enjoying this. Probably as close as I will ever get to owning one of these gorgeous cars!
Fab!! Thanks for watching Chuck!
You crack me up. I love watching your videos. My money was on the carb from the start. Enzo would be proud.
Thank you Chris, enjoy the weekend!!
You will still want to know why #3 is different to prevent potential damage - carby, valve stem seals... who knows what it is but it looks like you're on a winner. For it's age your 308 is amazing, thanks for the vid looking forward to more and best of luck :D
Thank you Tristan!!
Sell the wife? 😄
I got so excited when I saw that needle on the comp gauge go over the 150 mark on cyl 3 I nearly jumped out my chair...lol....glad it went all well for you, going to be a easy fix
Thanks buddy!!!😃
Was really relieved the compression test went well, really enjoying these videos.
So pleased for you, that was real relief on No 3..
Thanks buddy!!
Nice to see someone so excited and relieved that the compression on the dodgy cylinder checks out
Thank you for the update and I look forward to seeing the solution soon. Great content.
Cheers Jay!! Enjoy the weekend!
Thanks for watching Graham!!
The ending had me smiling a lot, you daft man Jacko!! Glad it might mean it is something simpler...
Thanks Chris old buddy!!
Great result! Wouldn't be any fun without some drama. Looking forward to the story continuing. Cheers
Thank you!!!
Thanks for watching buddy and enjoy your day!
Great result ! Another very entertaining vid.👍
So happy for you Jack, good stuff man, you deserve it
Congratulations on dodging a serious bullet! really enjoy these videos.
Thanks for the tip!
This reminds me of my old Matra Murena I used to sit in the boot to get the plugs out! Glad it's not looking serious, will look out for this you have been on my local roads.
Great news! Happy for both of you🎉🎉
