Fascinating. Thank you -- and for mentioning the Amazon rarity which is much treasured in Sweden. I only got to drive a P1800 for a day way back in my 30s and have to say that the wobbly steering and lack of raw power from 'flooring it' was disappointing. The one I tried out was rt hand drive and had the Laycock overdrive familiar from MG and Rover of the time. I wonder if it would have had overdrive at all without Jensen's involvement. Without it the result would have been a thirsty dog of a car -- pedigree maybe but more docile great Dane than greyhound. Properly built and tuned MGs and Triumphs were far superior, unless one really needed plastic rear seats.

Not by any stretch of imagination is this Volvos best car. A car with (at the time) poor performance, poor handling and awkward styling (look at Lancia's etc for proof].

There is a movie featuring the Volvo 123 GT called "Swedish Auto," starring the lovely January Jones of "Mad Men" fame. Excellent little movie.

Good example of P1800 always quite expensivve in the US. looked for to get one many times, starting in late 1980s. always out of reach.

This car makes me wonder what Volvo would have been if they had continued down this path. Beautiful well made affordable cars. They could have taken over the world. At least they got the well made affordable cars part right.

So very true, I purchased an immaculate for 2004 CLK 320 Cabriolet, it drives perfect, better than I every could have imagined, view out is excellent, steering, brakes and engine, superb, seriously going to change my 2015 Kadjar for the CLK coupe.

I own a C4 since 2011. Just returned from a trip to Germany. 301.550 km. A dream to drive. Bullit-prove engineering, looks great, sounds great. More te come.

I owned a '64 split-bumper S for quite a few years early in the millennium. Such a beatiful car! That's why I bought it, also because I figured it was a bomb-proof daily driver. Well, it was robust, but on the other hand it drove like a truck, with an unlovely engine sound, so-so handling, iffy brakes, mediocre traction and unhappy visibility (you sit very low in these things). All in all, a 1970s R4 Renault drives a lot better, and isn't that much slower. The Volvo had pretty bad heat sink too, so summer driving was not a pleasure at all. And it had its niggling problems. The gas tank intake is on top of the rear left fender, so if I left it outside during a strong thundershower, it'd get rainwater in the tank. I can't count how many times I'd dry up the carb with towels after emptying the tank into a bucket (fortunately, there was a plug under the tank I could unscrew for that). And the overdrive was capricious, too. That good 'ole Irv Gordon could clock up a million miles in a P1800 speaks to how different folks go for different strokes.

16v turbo was quicker

I really enjoyed my red P1800. It was brought to Canada by a member of the military and it had swedish on the dials and guages. People didn't know what it was and since it was red some thought it was a Ferrari!. Sadly I couldn't keep up with the rust. I eventually sold it to a local doctor who has a California car that had been modified for air conditioning and looked terrible. I like to think part of my car is still cruising around. WIsh I could afford another. Thanks for the ride by the way👍

Safety... Few years ago while I was looking for a parking lot in Vienna, I "reached" the back of a Mercedes W124 with my Toyota Prius 3.gen. Thee Prius had a big amortisation, but on the MB we was not able to find any demage, not even a single schratch. My boss fired me next day.

The ability of governments to ban classics and gasoline in general has made the future uncertain. The idea that someone will always want a really special car loses its luster if they can't be driven. It's sad because modern cars are filled with toxic electronics and plastic. They're often not worth repairing after ten years. My classic has outlived five plastic cars. There's no way you can manufacture and demolish five new cars at less damage to the environment than the bit of extra smog from one old car.

Why did I ever sell the one I had. It was just like driving your favorite sofa!

I had an e60 520d se. Stupidly got rid of it on a mere 130k miles. Lovely car, plain basic but superbly engineered. Nothing wrong with that so called n47 engine as it was looked after properly. Now have an f10 but hankering for another gorgeous e60
