  • This isn't a huge patch as far as planes are concerned, as most of the new content was ground-forces related. However there are some interesting new planes, and some Flight Model changes to popular planes that people should be aware of...

      +long5hot Awesome news! Maybe it would help a lot adding #warthunder hashtags to both tweets and youtube videos. I always watch twitter newsfeeds and never came upon yours until you mentioned it here.
      By the way, I always wondered... Seeing you always testing against biplanes, maybe sometimes you want better bots... I uploaded an image for you here:
      i.imgur.com/EoAgrV6.jpg
      Have you ever tried using that?
      THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR WORK!

      +Gabriela Druta I'm not actually testing against the biplanes, I'm just using the custom battle to run my usual flight tests instead of a test flight - firstly because it saves me time climbing off the runway, secondly as I can directly test the climbrate from a 2000m spawn, and thirdly the high speed test is a bit more realistic as I can shoot a target along the way :)
      Good idea re the #warthunder tag - I'll try to remember to use it!

      +long5hot Hey m8!! Long time no talk to! I've missed talking with you and watching your videos, my friend! I've been _so_ bloody busy with school I just haven't had time to play much of *anything* in the last seven months or so.... I'm looking to start playing War Thunder again though, but I'm _extremely_ out of practice LOL!! I have to get used to to the new patch and everything it looks like as well, now! Just wanted to tell you hello and I hope you had a really happy holiday season and everything is going great for ya in general! My semester starts tomorrow as I don't have any classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and yesterday was a holiday in the USA (plus I was flying back to where I'm living now in Colorado from Louisiana where I was visiting with my family and went to my Brother-in=Law's wedding! Hope all is well, my friend! I look forward to hearing back from ya soon, m8!!!
      Sincerely and Respectfully,

    I think it's pretty awesome that we have a Japanese plane armed with the seriously cool Ho-301 cannon. It's actually a little more like a low-velocity rocket cannon, since the ammunition is "caseless" and contains the propellant charge within the body of the projectile. On the other hand, it was so low-velocity (equivalent to an air rifle, or about 2/3rds the velocity of a 45 ACP pistol bullet, apparently) that maximum effective range is often given as less than 100 meters. Just from a momentary glimpse when you shot down the Zero, the 40mm shells did not SEEM to be travelling at less than a third of the speed (200m/s compared to 780m/s) of the machine gun tracers, but Lord knows I have no basis for reference and they WERE slower.
    Also, the A7M2 is a full BR point higher and demonstrably worse (in reference, at least) than the premium version? Color me surprised.
    Keep up the good work, I always like to see new long5hot videos in my feed!

  • @long5hot
    @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

    Note: The A7M2's battle rating has since been adjusted down from 4.7 to 4.0, and the Ki-61 Tei from 4.7 to 4.3.

    Wow, if I didn't know I would say this plane is BR 5.0. Only thing that is bad is the droprate of the 40mm shells.
    'But hey let's put it at BR 2.3, that's our Christmas troll for this year' Gajin said.

    @long5hot  Před 8 lety +4

    I made aiming with the Ki-44 otsu look easy in this video, and indeed those are the shots its most comfortable with - but having played several battles with it, those cannon can be quite a bitch to land on targets, mostly because until you're within 400m range the lead indicator is absolutely rubbish & gives you no idea of where the target's headed. And the plane is incredibly fragile.

    " Ki-43s have all lost some of their roll rate, which while still faster than average is not at Ishak-speed like it used to be, and like it should be - I've seen wartime footage of Hayabusas performing blindingly fast snap rolls, which isn't possible in WT now even in Arcade mode. In RB mode their roll rate is now rather glacial. On a positive note, they still climb extremely well, their low speed handling remains brilliant, their turnrate is exceptional and may even have improved in this patch. But that roll rate looks really wrong to me & I expect there'll be another revision of their FMs in the future, which will probably fix the roll rate and stuff up their turning or low speed handling :) "

    The Ki 61 tei and hei are probably would probably be better suited for 3.7 in AB, I have always considered them over tiered personally.
    What is even better is that the Ki 84 ko is 4.3 in RB, and pretty much outperforms both the tei and hei in most flight characteristics but the hei has a 4.7 BR and the tei a 4.3 BR.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      @qazserNOS Před 8 lety +1

      +zxbc I'm not so sure as the cannon fired caseless ammunition that allowed for a higher fire rate. Wikipedia lists 475 RPM for the cannons. At 10 rounds per gun that's only 1.3 seconds to empty the magazine. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ho-301_cannon

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

  • @JoviaI1
    @JoviaI1 Před 8 lety

    Very good video with some really nice and extensive tests on the planes. I think that for many of the planes, the high altitude performance was nerfed considerably. The La-7 and P-63-A10, for example, seem to perform worse than the Ki-61-hei now at high altitude where they used to do pretty well. Also, from what I have seen, the Ki-61-hei and the Ki-43-III seem to fly as well as they used to at low altitude anywhere below 2500m. Overall, it seems the Ki-61-hei can outperform the La-7 and P-63-A10 at almost everything but speed at the moment. The P-63-A10 seems to have had a nerf to its turn time as well. This has made my grind for the Mig-17 very tough as I have the premium variants of both these planes.

    UPDATE 2: Ok, the Stock A7M2 is literally a BnZ. It loses too much energy in turns, making him a not so good turnfighter. His energy retention at dives is good, but at climbs it wastes quite too much. Weaponry speaking, not so great but doable.
    Both the Tei and the A7M2 climbs better at 15°~20°, use your buggy climbrate and energy to maintain at least some trick in the sleeves. Also, it's too slow to make quick maneuvers, so the best thing to do is to follow the KISS rule:
    "Keep
    It
    Simple,
    Stupid!"
    UPDATE: Apparently, the Tei performs better at higher alt (better maneuvrability), at around 5000m. It may be an "placebo" effect of trying to find something good at it... But, well, at least that. Also, after this last random patch I feel the Tei behaving better than before, although it's energy retention is crap as hell (once again, I think this is another "placebo" effected feeling).
    I'll keep on touch.
    I hope Gaijin ignore my scores in the 61 Tei... At least in AB, I have 73 kills and 30 death in 35 flyouts. I'm still spading it and so far the Hei still outclasses it everyway but Head-On (Fuselage 20mm's). The Tei has a little better FM of a Boomerang though.
    I don't like to play RB since there has TOO MUCH individualism, so I lack practice on it.
    Maybe I should start killing myself to Gaijin fix it?
    Although no Info about A7M2, I have somewhere 2/3 researched to get it (only 21k to go), I have heard that it's not as good as the A7M1 (NK9H).

  • @DMStraylight
    @DMStraylight Před 8 lety +1

    The biggest problem the F3F has is its speed. Some Era I bombers will outrun it in level flight, and basically every monoplane fighter in the game can just open up the throttle and walk away from it at will. The wings are also EXTREMELY fragile--I had one snapped off by a single 7.92mm hit from a Stuka gunner. Combine that with its underwhelming armament, and it feels a bit overtiered at 1.7.
    What I hope happens is it gets bumped down to 1.3 while the F2A-1s get their additional guns back and get moved up to 1.7 in its place. That would, I think, get Era I of the US tree pretty well sorted.
    Still, spading it was good for a laugh, even if it did only take me 4 flyouts (in RB) to do. It was, if nothing else, a pleasant distraction from the misery that is P-38 stock syndrome.
    Speaking of... any chance we might see a Survival Guide for the J and L Lightnings? I'm sick of getting set on fire by single .30 cal hits from 1200m.

    the ki-43-3 has lost way more power at altitude than it has below 4k, at around 5 and 6 it is nearly useless and the previous ki-43s still have incredible climb rates and can fly circles around it, especially at high altitude. I'm so sad, its been my go-to most enjoyable plane for a while now.

      +robin tremblay ... or copied the .50 cal brownings as I'm sure they had plenty available from captured P-40s during their quick advance through south-east asia and the phillipines. They could also have put Ho-5s on everything, that would have worked too.
      Instead they stuck with noodle shooters on so many of their army planes. I know they had a low muzzle velocity, which they made up for with a high RoF. They surely can't have been as bad IRL as they are in WT, else why would they have continued using them?

      +Philipp U. Ok, just ran some more tests. The D-5, the only one I have spaded, does indeed perform better over that altitude - but its no better below 6000m than it was. Its possible the recoil effect might be less, but I'd need to test it further to be sure.
      Also, the J7W1 Shinden looks like its gained a little more elevator authority in this patch.

      @korgeth Před 8 lety

      +long5hot So D5 still crap?

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +2

      +korgeth Maybe a little less crap. In Arcade, so little happens above 6000m that any improvement there is almost irrelevant. If I'm right about the recoil than that'll help, but the plane still bleeds speed in any kind of maneuver which is one of its biggest drawbacks, along with its terrible DM.

    • @ervinb4417
      @ervinb4417 Před 8 lety +1

      In arcade I've never been to 6000 meters, and even in RB, most combat occurs below 6000. Yeah people might climb to 6000, and the initial engagement might occur there but combat tends to quickly spiral down in alt.

      I wpuld also like to point out that the nerf to the ki-43 is absolute bollocks:

    long5hot the Ki-43 III nerf is confirmed. My Spitfire Mk IX could outturn on of them at 6km (I doubt he was using rudder and elevator). I was surprised I won since I thought he would turn curcles around me. Also, in a 2.3 lineup I notice alot more climbing Ki-44s indeed. Bust most shocking was how I saw one PUT OUT A FIRE. Only problems I have are the poor energy retention, but I'm annoyed that they placed the 50cal and 30cal in the same MG category. Okay, sorry for the multiples here, but was asking questions at the video went along. I unlocked the F2F3 and it is fun to fly. Seems very strong too. Being that the guns are in the nose, even with this being a small plane, it's still a good idea to set convergence really high? I try to use stealth as you've recommended in my planes before because of the high incendiary to set them on fire, as well as being able to pepper them for a while before they really get a clue it wasn't just a passing hit or flak. With all the F2F's, I seem to have problems with hit registry with the stealth ammo.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +Kurt Bennett As they're fuselage mounted and close together, convergence really doesn't matter too much. If stealth isn't working, try Omni (Universal) as with .50s I find its usually one of the best belts.

    Also, kind of off point, do you fly the P47 variants often anymore? I ask because before the latest patch, i could spot a bomber about 7k's away while at around the same altitude, drop the nose and do a altitude drop to turn it into speed and then helicopter up and cut the bomber to pieces from underneath. My speed could get as high as 7-800 kmph. Now, when i try this, I find it locks up the elevators and I crash into the ground. Noticed that at all? Ideas?

    Is it just me or do many many planes have either a huge nerf to elevator deflection angle or were born. With one. Look at the f2a1 the f3f and your a7m2 and ki61. It looks like many planes had this problem.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +Mike Hammer On closely examining the video, you're right - those planes hardly seem to move the elevator. I tend to think its probably cosmetic though, I don't think its related to the plane's actual turning ability else the F3F would be much worse than it is - and Ki-61s don't seem any different to their elevator turning than they were prior to this patch.

    Say, what happened to the stock syndrome videos? And have you heard that IL-2:BoS is getting a mouse aim system?

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +Muddy Fudger I was actually planning a stock syndrome vid on the J7W1 in the near future ... and then patch 1.55 changed its flight model and I need to start again. I actually bought BoS when it was on sale recently after the mouse aim was announced. There's no keyboard overrides and I found it extremely difficult to configure the camera keybindings - just couldn't seem to get it set to something that works for me. Also the hangar screen maxes out my GPU and makes the fan scream, so I need to get into an actual battle asap whenever I play that game. The actual mouse aim seems to be well implemented, better than WT's in some ways as it flies more like a real pilot (rolling into turns instead of stomping on the rudder).
      Provided I can work out how the keybindings should be setup I'll definitely give that game a decent try sometime.

    • @GumMagnum
      @GumMagnum Před 8 lety

      long5hot According to Magz video, IL2's approach is to not compromise the flight models, only translating movements of the mouse to the appropriate inputs. It's also quite new to IL-2 BoS, so I'm personally going to wait a while for the devs to polish it out before I try to give it a go. I suspect that, when finished, the gameplay will beat WTs.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +1

      +Muddy Fudger The potential is certainly there. Ignoring my problems with camera controls, flying with mouse aim in IL2-BOS felt far more like controlling a real plane than Mouse Aim in RB does. Its strange how you can get a feeling of flying a plane through a mouse control, but IL2 achieves it somehow. I do see distinct disadvantages though compared to joystick, in particular the difficulty in performing vertical maneuvers such as loops & immelmans with mouse alone.
      I really hope they fix the hangar GPU problem (that not everyone experiences) quickly as it makes my PC sound like its going into meltdown ;)

    hey longshot can you do a video on realistic battles? rn the only things i know is basically just how to aim :/

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety

      +HammyPiglet I haven't flown realistic for quite a while, basically because I don't like the random battles. Lots of downtime spent climbing from the airfield, then 5 minutes of action in which one team is quite likely to simply steamroll the other - if you're unlucky you're on the bad side of it OR all the enemies die before you get within 5km of them, I once spent 2 hours playing RB where that happened in battle after battle.
      In maybe 1 game in 10, in my experience anyway, you'll have a good contest that extends beyond the initial clash & planes actually have to RTB to rearm/repair and then return for a second bout. Those games are good, but there's just not enough of them for my liking.
      If/when Enduring Conflict is finished & providing it lives up to its promise, I'll be playing a lot more RB and hence be making more videos.

    That Ki-44 with 40mm cannons is quite a "pay to win" airplane at br 2.3. Had to fight quite a few those when spading the br 1.7 F3F and I can say it was not fun. Maybe it was just me, but I had several matches I had to wait over 2 minutes to get a rank one average BR 1.3 match, which was quite odd.

    • @long5hot
      @long5hot  Před 8 lety +3

      +Polaventris I can understand it being that low in RB/SB where its guns are harder to aim and the ammo counts for a lot, but in AB ... 2.3 is just terribly terribly wrong. Almost at I-301 levels of wrong.

    • @TheReligiousCrap
      @TheReligiousCrap Před 8 lety

      +Polaventris Something is troubling me with these K-61 hei and tei. My hei model, with all mods removed has a pitiful climb rate of 5.1 m/s. while the stock tei model starts at 11.9 m/s. With all mods installed, hei model climb rate rise to 17.2 m/s. I guess it is safe to assume that the tei model should have a better climb rate, when fully upgraded.

    it looks to me they have nerfed Japaneses planes rather than buff them. this doesn't make any sense considering that Japanese planes light up like a dead Christmas tree once hit with USSR APIT rounds.

      +lance Premus I've seen nerfs to some Japanese planes, notably the Ki-43-III and the Ki-61s, while the A7M1 & J2M2 are as good as ever, the J7W1 has been markedly improved and the new Ki-44s are powerful & undertiered.
