  • Are you a beginner or still feeling clueless when it comes to watercolour sketching? Then you're not alone! This video marks the start of my voyage into the bewildering world of watercolour, and I set sail by sharing with you an easily achievable wet-in-wet method for painting this colourful scene, then drawing over the top of it. This painting method requires very little skill (as I prove) yet can still produce some striking results, and helped to point me in the direction of where I might try to go next with my sketching. With any luck it will help you too!

    I’m new to watercolor and enjoying the process of wet-on-wet loose color work followed by ink detailing. Thank you for the example and enjoy your rest!

      Great to hear you’re enjoying it, wet in wet is a very fun thing to experiment with. I won’t be resting much, lots of practice ahead! Cheers, Donald.

  • @CherylsCreativeWorld33

    This is great, I enjoy your fearlessness at trying something, more than once, especially! I think this came out really well! And yes, it’s all about freeing yourself and having fun!

      You call it fearlessness, I call it cluelessness 😅 But yes I wasn’t too fussed how this turned out, I was really just using this have a play with paint and get a little more practice in using it. All part of the learning curve 🙂

      Great to hear that, it’s hard to find a style that feels like “you”. I never stop tweaking and wanting to change things though, it’s an ongoing learning process.

    I love this, just came across this channel and holy moly you got me inspired and motivated to pick up those rusty paint brushes of mine. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful art and kind words with this community. This is exactly what I needed, I was about to give up on my art, but what you're saying is just so true 💜

      Hi Lisa, that’s great to hear, very glad you came across it! Definitely don’t give up, this is why I started the channel, I have many videos about this stuff because we all go through the same ups and downs. I think sometimes you just need to hear someone tell you to keep going and focus on the enjoyment of your art 🙂 Good luck with it! Thanks, Donald.

    Hi, this is a very interesting style and I'm going on an art journey myself, as I'm trying soft pastels for the first time after using color pencils for months so this video gave me confidence.
    Thanks for uploading a real time video again!

      That’s great you’re trying new things, such good fun to explore the different art materials and see what they can do. I’ve never used pastels, hope you get on well with them. Good luck!

    Well I really like what your doing. I’m no expert I’m just trying ink and watercolour myself, one suggestion would be to lighten up on the purple so your ink would pop a bit.
    I’m scared to paint like you do. Put WC down first then follow with ink 😂 not sure why I’m afraid to fail or something. Just keep doing what your doing and I’ll follow and maybe we’ll learn things together. Thanks a lot.

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety

      Hi Jeffie Bear 🙂 Thanks for the suggestion, you’re right the purple was overdone, it’s hard to judge since watercolour changes so much when it goes dry. This is how we learn though, will aim for more subtlety in future! Hope you figure it all out too 😁 Cheers, Donald.

    I’ve been sketching for years , more than 50 years and now , I m having trouble letting go and not being so meticulous with lines , I’m very critical of my work ! I think I’m being carefree but I get done I have had out the ruler ! So we all struggle, take heart !!

    • @UrbanSketchy
      @UrbanSketchy  Před 2 lety

      Wow 50 years, that’s a proper commitment to sketching! Thanks for that Sandra, it’s great to hear from people with much more experience that the endless self-criticism and analysis never leaves you, makes it easier to be at peace with it 🙂 Cheers, Donald.

    I wonder if you realise just how inspiring you are Donald? You have a great philosophy on art and I agree, I don’t think I learn anything from watching videos of accomplished artists. In fact, I have just realised that I don’t anymore🤔 I am not saying that you are not an accomplished artist in fact I think you are much better than you think you are. But I know of all the artists that I used to watch, none of them would show a piece of work or work in progress that they would not sell.
    I love the spirit in which you approach art and it is very encouraging. I have tried all sorts of ways to get into watercolour but I find that if I follow a tutorial I can get an amateurish version of the tutorial but if I attempt something original, it becomes a disaster. I think I just don’t work in colour very well as I am more relaxed and happy with my pen and ink drawings/sketches….. I wonder when a sketch becomes a drawing or vice versa????
    Looking forward to seeing what up you come up with after a weeks experimenting and many thanks for the work you put into creating these videos🙏

      Oh, I couldn't agree more to what you are saying! I have been watching videos and books of sketching, and when I read about the authors I see they are all architects, or have studied arts, or work as illustrators or other form of paid artists. So basically doing art for a living. And that becomes a bit intimidating. But a few of them, are self taught artists, and they are doing it for the pleasure of it. Like Donald here. And I can totally relate to their thoughts and approaches. They are more like me or I am more like them. We are all in the same bucket, we have the same frustrations. Donald, by all means, you are not alone. You are unique, as we all are (there's no identical DNA sequence, is there?), but on the bottom line, we all struggle with more ore less the same thoughts.
      Thanks for being an inspiration! And good luck in your watercolour quest!

      Thank you Graham, really appreciate that. I would love to watch a pro sketcher/artist show an artwork that doesn’t work out well, or see their early stuff that wasn’t as good. I would find it more relatable and inspiring to see the progression. I do admire though that people can become so accomplished that they have it all worked out and mistakes rarely appear. Something to aim for!
      You’re right I have no idea what the difference is between a sketch and a drawing. I always thought a sketch was something artists did in preparation for a full artwork, but it turns out a sketch can be the artwork itself! The terms probably mean the same thing now.
      At least you’ve settled on your thing, I thought I had but then keep wondering if I might enjoy a different medium even more. Hopefully I’ll figure it out now I have a bit more time. It took fifteen hours over three very late nights to make this video, definitely in need of a break 😅
      Cheers, Donald.

      Interestingly I heard an interview with Roisin Cure (think that’s how you spell it) and she was saying her experience of art school actually destroyed her confidence and they made her try to conform to the “correct” way to do art. It was only years later when she discovered urban sketching and started doing art for herself again that her confidence came back. I can see how having an art education can come with its own challenges and pressures. I liked how open she was about it all, you don’t hear that from pro’s very often.
      Also, I do like the idea that we’re all in the same bucket 🪣 😀
      Cheers, Donald.
