  • @Aetrion
    @Aetrion Před 5 lety +343

    I agree that the Venator is probably the best star destroyer, but I don't agree that the Tarkin doctrine is stupid. Tarkin's fleet wasn't designed to fight other spaceships, it was designed to occupy or lay waste to any world capable of producing opposing spaceships. The primary role of the ISD was planetary invasion and orbital bombardment. It was armed and armored to plow through planetary defenses and it did that job extremely well. It simply wasn't a strategy designed to win a space war, it was a strategy designed to deny the whole galaxy the opportunity to wage one, and it worked extremely well given just how few ships the Rebels were able to scrounge together. Even the lackluster performance of the TIE fighter made sense in a context of denying people access to combat ships, because it was designed to be worthless if captured or stolen.

As long as the Venator can stay outside of weapons range, it's compliment of fighter-bombers will finish the job.

    Ah, the famous Venator-class... Yeah, I agree, Alan, I'd definitely take a couple of these to a single ISD I or II. Especially the II. I even think the Venators were equipped with proton torpedo launchers on its bow, giving it even more of a punch. Still, it had its weaknesses which were lower armor for a ship of the line and less firepower than similarly-sized ships such as the Providence-class or the Victory-class. Its triumphs well overcome its shortcomings. I'd take this any day.

      It's one of the stark contrast between the Republic Navy, CIS Navy and the Imperial Navy. The Venator, Acclamtor and other ship designs of the Republic Navy favored designs that put as much versatility in as few designs as possible, while the other 2 navies focused more on specialized ships.

    @tba113 Před 5 lety +163

    The Venator is a solid ship, and taking one on in battle is no simple prospect.
    _However,_ it is not without its flaws.
    *-Bridge* *placement:* to be fair, this is something that almost no capital ship in Star Wars seems to get right. Sure, having separate command sections to concentrate on commanding the ship versus fighter ops seems to make sense, but the Venator's twin-flying-bridges arrangement seems like it's just asking for trouble by being so exposed - and there is no advantage to the exposed tower. It makes sense for aircraft carriers, but they do it to make sure their radar and communication systems get as far above sea level as possible, squeezing out as much range as possible, but that isn't a factor for starships like the Venator - and if it were, they'd need a matching pair of bridges on the underside to cope with the huge blind spot the hull imposes. A better arrangement would be to have the bridge(s) buried in the center of the ship, not hanging exposed two hundred meters away from the heavy armor and shields.
    *-Versatility:* While the Venator's broad mission profile means it can reasonably go up against almost any enemy, it puts a 59-million-credit lower limit on how much any given operation is going to cost. Destroy a Separatist base? Send a Venator, 59M credits. Peacekeeping in a backwater system? Send a Venator, 59M credits. Defend a key world? Send Venators, continue to plonk down 59M-credit gobs of cash until you have enough Venators to handle the threat. They're a one-size-fits-most solution that only scales in terms of how many Venators you want to send at a time. Even the Republic seems to have realized this, since they (eventually) rolled out the Gozanti and Arquitens classes of light cruisers to handle missions that a Venator would be overkill for.
    *-Troop* *Capacity:* 2,000 men might sound like a lot, but isn't really enough to make much of a difference on a planetary scale. For comparison, that's slightly _less_ than the total number of US forces in the First Battle of Fallujah in 2004. Oh, they'd be fine in raids and limited strikes, but the ground-troop complement of a Venator would have barely been a drop in the bucket in any of the major battles of WW2. The Germans lost at least 50% more men than that in Operation: Market Garden, for example, and that was a crushing victory for the Nazis. And the numbers of LAAT's don't really add up, either: even at max capacity, you'd need 67 transports to unload all the troopers at once, but the Venator only carries 40. Almost half of them are going to have to fly down, unload, and run back to the ship for more to get all those boots onto the ground - and that assumes that none of the LAAT's are damaged or destroyed in the process, and the troops don't mind going in as just infantry, with no AT-TE's along for that first wave. Alternately, they could stuff the AT-TE's with troops and use the LAATs' vehicle-carrying configuration, but that still only gets somewhat more than half the troops into position; you'd still need 30 of the Venator's 40 to come back for another shift.
    *-Fighter* *Bays/Atmospheric* *Entry:* Don't get me wrong, the Venator's strike wing is excellent: nearly 500 fighters, interceptors, bombers, and gunships is a very powerful fleet air arm. And having the open bays allows for rapid deployment. ...But don't pretend that such an admitted vulnerability does anything but hurt the Venator's ability to take punishment - which is exacty what it would be exposed to when it drops down into a planet's atmosphere to provide fire support. Becoming a kilometer-long gunship would make the Venator a huge bullet magnet, which means it's pretty much committed to being _just_ a gunship: no shuttle or fighter will want to dock with it while it's under fire, and the Venator wouldn't want to let them in, either, because that would mean opening the bay doors.
    ...Look, I agree: the Venator is a very good ship, and does the things it was designed for very well. The issues I mention above notwithsdanding, the Empire should have kept more of them in service. But every design involves compromises, so if we're going to crush the Separatists and not get a bunch of good clones killed, we should not be blind to that fact.

      Yep. They did make a smart change when later Venators had a smaller hangar access door. But another issue is the gun PLACEMENT. Those turbolasers are all focused on the dorsal side of the hull. Meaning that if an enemy cruiser got beneath it, the Venator's screwed. In space, tho, they could just roll and fire "upside down," something they kinda forgot about space it seems.

      @ThomasZT Před 5 lety +6

      you’re right, but don’t forget about fire power. i love the Venator but i think its space opera things ... Isd are so big because they have armor and space inside. the movies show them wrong. the venator would fire a long time, to actually destroy a Isd. plus, nobody takes burst fire and constant dps into calculation. i just mean the numbers are odd ... venator has x fighters, x troops and shit on board. i mean they have to eat, shit and sleep. that takes up space. space that is required for shield batteries, power supplies and things i can’t imagine. when you would simulate them in an actual battle, the venator would blow up after a few barrages of fire. i mean its hypothetic, but the venator couldn’t keep up the fire fight. when they both encounter each other in let’s say a head on. when could they fire at each other, 100 kilometers away? in the films the stand side by side ... but in a real, this distance is nothing for turbo lazzor batteries ... i mean they shoot with light, so ... the projectiles travel with light speed ... a venator couldn’t outmaneuver that, so it’s practically dead at 100 kilometers away (62 Miles). Oki, that’s why hit´n run tactics. so, deploy all fighters far away and jump in with all you have. but like tba113 said you would lose a lot of clones. actually, ... all i say ... why you ask? oki some things to consider:
      so let’s sum up what the venators place management is all about: clones -sleeping, -eating, -shitting, -showering and every day stuff. so, you need food, water and a place for waste. oki waste is blown out into space. oki, we synth water from space, but that’s another machine which uses space inside the ship. clone warrior equipment, shield stuff, engines, power core, batteries -for sustained firing ... FUEL, hyperdrive, fighters, bombers- at st´s, other shit and maintenance stuff. i think this is a odd number problem what never gets addressed by anyone.
      what is an Isd filled with? air, rocks? i think a bunch of shield things, tactical anti hack shit, batteries ... and a much better armor, which wouldn’t be that easily fucked by those over powered Rebel rockets. I know, no Rebels here at this point, but i think they’re rockets a to powerful, why don’t the Imperium have such things. maybe they have, but i don’t know it.
      Also, everybody forgets about maintenance stuff ... you think, what the shit is that? spare parts for the fighters for example. i mean in realistic condition an y-fighter was sure hit by a tie fighter in battle. not destroyed, but hit. now you say, these fighters aren’t on the venator and you’re right ... but that’s just because i don’t know the names for this kind of fighters and bombers. but i think they are somehow the same. more expansive but well armored, have hyperdrives. it’s like the Rebels kept the fighter concept against the imperium. good fighters, bombers and a carry against an Isd. oki, in the films x-wings are in bad condition but, lets say everything is new and fresh ...
      ... here is another thing with our custom battle. the video and some (all) comments said ... hey, let’s go one on one, Isd against Venator ... nobody said which fraction and which fighters would be used in this battle. so oki, lets say Isd against Venator, the standard fighters and bombers on both ships. no fractions included.
      Venator with all fighters deployed, jumps to star destroyer, hit and run style. Venator loses, you ask why was my point on the start. when the Venator arrives, close to the star destroyer for max accuracy to disable the lazzor batteries of the Isd, how fast would it be? i think not fast enough to disable all of the Isd weapon systems in time. how fast can a Venator fire? like three salvos before the Isd can fire back? Shields of the Isd should handle that easy. after the Venator is destroyed the fighters have to go somewhere. they could jump somewhere and restock, repair and plan the next hit´n run. but the Venator would be destroyed.
      oki, Venator fighters and bombers you say. they have rockets and stuff. but i say, shields of the Isd are still on. so the rockets and bombs don’t do, or do a lot less damage. yeah, but Venator fighters disable shield points on Isd! oki you’re right but how fast. doesn’t that mean this would be a tie? why a tie? because the Isd is deploying fighters too. so the Venator fighters have to retreat after a while? i mean the Venator is lost.
      "oki lets do it on a timeline here, i think its more understandable:"
      - i thought about a way the Venator could win this, i wanted to present you the way, the Isd would destroy the Venator. but i think it is easier to present a way, how the Venator could win and how tactical it has to be. i am rethinking the whole text i wrote, but its late and i am tired and i was thinking like 3 hours how this fight would end. so, you get a time line how i would destroy an Isd with a venator, where i assume how some things would work out:
      fight starts: Venator and deployed fighters jump close to Isd. (why close? dont know. the film is like that. it would be the best if the Venator jumps far away but still in weapon reach and the fighter very close to the Isd to get fast to the shield weak spots. oki, maybe the Venator jumps close because the Isd outranges the Venator anyway and the weapon systems are closer more powerful (weapons of Venator more powerful close? why would that be you ask? consider here odd number problem of the Venator, too much stuff in it, for less money and same weapon capacity? no way^^))
      Venator open fire at ... at what ... i even don’t know how shields work proper in this case. if the shields hold back all damage, the Venator have to shoot first the weak spots. that means it have to think about where it jumps, in other words ... in which position it jumps. from above, face to face, from below, from the back? Could the Venator even detect in which position the Isd is parked? i mean oki ... it is doing some planetary blockade or other Imperial things. i say oki, Venator knows the exact position and direction Isd is facing. so, it jumps under it. Venator direction is to deal max burst dps in a short amount of time. i don’t know how the Venator does the most damage in the fewest time, how it burst damages the most. i assume the Venator is under the Isd and has all 8 main turrets aimed up to shoot the under shield generator and after that, straight the hangar for preventing fighters to deploy. maybe this is even a weak spot of the Isd which isn’t armored and the Venator could do a lot of damage. i hope this is a weak spot^^ ...
      at the same time Venator fighters and bombers jump above the Isd and target first the two upper shield generators. after that the main weapons systems and after that the maneuver thrusters and main thrust.
      oki, that’s no time line, but you get what i mean. if just something is going wrong and the Isd could shoot at the Venator, it would go down to fast.
      this is a hard and risky maneuver to do. why? you have to synchronize two fleets. first you have to split your army, so the deff of your carrier, the Venator Fighters and bombers are jumping to coordinates above the Isd but outside of the Isd detection range. after that, they aim for the Isd and jump the second time. while the Venator itself has to to the same. so, jumping somewhere far away, under the Isd, maneuver around and jump to get under it. the have to arrive quite simultaneously because the Isd could move/maneuver.
      don’t forget, you have to know the exact position and facing of the Isd. I think this could work, but you have so much to lose and you have to do a first strike with the Venator, so ... i am quite sure, face to face, the Isd would shred it.
      by the way:
      - why do Isd have they’re shield generators outside and the Venator doesn’t have this kind of problems? not so strong shields, don’t require that much cooling?
      - Isd turbo Lazzor batteries could hit the millennium falcon. in some film they’re escaping from somewhere and the Isd are blocking the way. han say something like, we have to get here away quick. when they hit us, we are dead. so i think that’s another space opera thing. you could argue that the millennium falcon is a bigger ship, but ... hey it’s not like main chars are never hit in the films by storm troopers. in a realistic fight, they would hit close targets i think. so i think they would hit other fighters as well.
      - hyperdrives are expansive, or at least not at all places available. the silver ship of padme needs one in the film on tatooine. so i think that’s why the tie-fighter got invented and why expansive little ships where abandoned.
      i mean look at the Venetor. i don’t know how much spare parts for fighters they have on board, but when they run out, they have to get ships from the better star systems than the outer rim for fighters ... and i mean how much fuel does such restock runs cost? i think you’re cheaper with an Isd.
      so i say, keep Venetor and Isd in same fleet, replace expansive fighters with cheap ones and you’re good to go against everything

      I’d still think a venator would beat an isd if it used all its resources and capabilities. A venator might not be able to beat an isd with its weapons alone, but it’s got 6 times the number of fighter ships than an isd does and can deploy them much more quickly and efficiently. Not only that, the fighters are solid and strong, not flimsy and weak like tie fighters, and have a whole range of bombers and interceptors. And we all know that most ship battles in Star Wars end with the fighters taking out the capital ships. So I think, on a 1 on 1 situation, a venator will be able to beat an isd if it used all its resources and played it smart, using its fighters to weaken and disable it and then bringing in the venator to finish it off. After all, the isd doesn’t even have a point defence system so it cant fend off the fighters on its own. It has to rely on the tie fighters, and we already that the venator has 6 times the number of isd fighters
      And it still adds up to be cheaper than the isd

      That's highly debatable. I'd say the Imperial Army is overall and generally-speaking better. Troopers still have standardized and effective equipment and receive some decent military training. Ultimately though, the Imperial Army is superior to the Republic one for one thing: it's that the Imperial Army has more numbers than the GAR. Without a doubt, on average the individual clone is superior to an Imperial Army trooper (and stormtrooper as well) - however, there are significantly less numbers in the GAR. Clones are extremely expensive to produce and take a longer time to train and prepare than normal recruits and conscripts of the Imperial Army - trading quantity for quality. Ultimately, the Imperial Army has superior numbers than the GAR by a significant amount - and argueably still decent equipment, which is why the Imperial Army is No. 1. However, I will say the Republic Army/CIS takes the No. 2 spot - all three of them are the most powerful superpowers in militaries.

But Deploying just a single class of ship as your full navy is a flawed tactic where as a combined battle group of one ISD1, one or two venators and two victory classes along side a mix of cruisers, frigates and corvettes as these would over the blind spots of all the SD's as all suffer from the problem of limited to no weapons on the rear.

      @SoftisNelaris Před 5 lety +1

      @@reecewestmoreland6137 Because Disney has generally refrained from expanding the Imperial navy much. The Empire in Legends had dozens of different ships with different intended mission profiles, including multiple proper anti-fighter corvettes and patrol frigates such as the Lancer Frigate, Tartan Patrol Cruiser, IPV-1, and Raider corvette. There's other factors for why they were struggling with the rebels, like the quality-versus-cost of the rebel starfighters (In particular the X, A, and B-wings), the pool of Imperial recruits (Normal humans filling the enlisted ranks, and too many entitled rich kids making it into command positions), and the age of TIE L/n Fighter on top of all of that.
      Also, the criticism of the Empire's lack of hyperdrive has a simple explanation; They didn't need hyperdrives. When Imperial capital ships entered the system, they were pretty much the dominant force and anti-imperial forces had to GTFO or be crushed. They weren't operating with "slash&run" guerrilla warfare tactics, they simply sent one of their obscenely well armed Star Destroyers into a system and took control. A lot of the Rebels' major victories were due to ace heroes like Luke, Leia, Han, Wedge, and Lando pulling off crazy stunts that only work thanks to dumb luck that has no counter.

      @marcbartuschka6372 Před 5 lety

      Well, we see both in legends material (like the Thrawn-trilogy) or in canon material (the book Thrawn) that imperial Star destroyers while on many occasions accted alone also were often supported by other ships - scurisers and smaller types. In Thrawn, the ISD is the core of a small fleet of ships which support each other, which made a lot of sense. Of course we see that little in the films since it is much easier to show the "bad guys" with just one easy to identify ship, instead of creating a mix of different ships. Imagine a fight in which the Empire use Nebulon-B (a imperial design) together with less known corvettes etc. against a swarm of rebel ships. The viewer would very easy have problems to see who is fighting on which side, for example if two Nebulon B are exchaning fire. That many imperial ships have the typical star-destroyer design make things a little bit better, but still it is much more easy to reduce one side just to a single typ of ship.

And these hangars had multiple launching bays on its sides, making it effectively a giant mouth vomiting TIE fighters. Still twice worse of a launching capability than a Venator, but we never see the supposed huge numbers of Venator fighters anyway. SW likes to overly boost its numbers beyond what is actually on screen. This is a well known phenomenon. That said, the Venator still makes much more sense in the Star Wars universe. At least until SW engineers finally decide to up their game in terms of range, precision, maneuverability and speed.
