    Here's a thought: What if the lack of a support system built-in the ship (either ETA 2, V-wing or TIE) and the need for the pilot to wear his own life-support suit was motivated by the threat of the Buzz Droids being able to cause the cockpit to decompress and vent? If the pilot's life-support is independent from the integrity of the ship, wouldn't that allow to counter a very real problem, as the pilot wouldn't have to worry about suiting up while in a dogfight if his craft gets damaged. I'm guessing quite a few X-wing pilots met a grisly end when their lungs were sucked out of their throat by the sudden decompression of their cockpit after what could have been a grazing shot from a TIE.

      At least in legends, the helmet has a backup airshield built into it that'll keep pressure in for a little while, however, unless someone was right there to pick you up, you where indeed screwed.
      Wing Commander seems to have had the safest approach of all. the fighters themselves have the main life-support, and in the case of an ejection, the helmet visor closes and suit life-support takes over.

      The pilot wearing a space suit would *eliminate* the need for a pressurized cockpit in the first place, meaning the ship can be more easily and cheaply engineered because it no longer needs to be a pressure vessel. Man... ya gotta LOVE how, in a LOT of ways, Star Wars actually does a great job at accurately portraying the politics and bureaucracy that goes into how big governments go about acquiring and funding defense contracts (or, well,... in the case of the Empire, OFFENSE contracts.)
    As a Marine veteran, I can tell you that the reason the Empire greenlit the offense contract for the Tie-fighters over the A-Wings sounds EXACTLY why just our RIFLES in the real-life American military are mostly manufactured by Colt - instead of, say, Heckler & Koch, Sig Sauer, IWI, Fabrique Nationale, or Daniel Defense Co. (and that’s just to name a few companies who typically manufacture firearms that are generally of at least substantially better quality, toughness, longevity, accuracy, and ruggedness than those generally manufactured by Colt.) Colt makes M4 carbines and M-16 rifles for the American military in bulk - and they’re what we call, “Not the best you could ask for, but comfortably good enough. ‘This is my Rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine... .’” Yada-yada-yada.
    The same LARGE-SCALE goal for cost effectiveness applies to commissioning new airframes for our air superiority programs. 🤣 It’s all CONNECTED, man!
    It’s just insanely cool to me how many story elements of Star Wars can almost VERBATIM sound like how deals unfold in real life. 🤯

    More and more, it seems like the Rebellion's fighter corps has similarities to WW2 Germany's tanks.
    +High performance? Check.
    +Revolutionary design? Check.
    +Heavily armed and defended? Check.
    -Maintenance nightmare? Check.
    -Slow production? Check.
    -Preposterously expensive? Check.
    It's telling that for all their advantages of shields, armor, hyperspace, and heavier weapons, Rebellion fighters generally only hold their own against basic-model TIE fighters. That suggests those advantages don't actually help all that much. If the choice between A-Wings and TIE fighters is a moderate improvement in performance at triple the price, the Empire probably made the right choice in sticking with the Sienar design.
    That said, I like the A-wing. It is an ambush predator, leaping out of hyperspace at high speeds to cause instant mayhem, and relying on its blistering speed to get it out of trouble as fast as it got in. That fits the Alliance's doctrine of surprise attacks from hidden bases perfectly.
    As fast as it is, the TIE is an entirely different animal - and not a bad design either. A Star Destroyer's fighter complement of 72 TIEs (including bomber and recon squadrons) seems more suited to being a defensive and support system, providing a fighter screen for the ISD itself and air support for ground operations. If you wanted a fighter to make Rebel bomber pilots rethink their life choices, a squadron of TIEs goes a long way toward that goal.
    If I had to eject, I'd also have a bit more confidence in the fully-sealed TIE pilots' flight suit than the open-faced helmets used on Rebel strike craft. If those break up, you're pretty much hosed: every Rebel pilot we see die has the cockpit explode around him, so there's no chance to get a mask sealed. TIE pilots at least have a split second to pull the "loud handle" and take their chances, but Rebel pilots pretty much win or die.

      A closer analogy would be US strikecraft (rebellion) VS Imperial Japanese strikecraft (empire). Indeed, that is what they were based on in real life. Statistics wise, the average X-Wing could handle 2.5 standard Ties, 1.5 Tie Interceptors, or 3 Tie bombers or Tie scouts before falling. That doesn't count ace pilots or Jedi pilots, just average pilots.

      @@thekenjistream8683 With the A-Wing costing nearly three times as much as a standard TIE fighter, with only moderate improvements in performance and being a maintenance nightmare, I think the analogy stands.
      For that matter, I think we agree on the illusion of one side's vehicles appearing heavily armed and defended: a lot is made of the heavier defenses and weapons of Rebel fighters like the X-Wing, but a fat lot of good it seems to do them. Getting a TIE fighter on their tail is still pretty much a death sentence for a Rebel pilot unless he gets a wingman to clear his six - and you can bet the TIEs will have the numbers advantage.
      As for Russian tanks... Well, maintenance wasn't as much of a problem for them, as they weren't really expected to survive long enough for their atrocious engine and transmission problems to be an issue. They didn't exactly fare well beyond the fact that they were cheap as chips to make, at least as far as tanks go. Some accounts of the battle of Kursk reported that the Soviets resorted to ramming the German tanks, in the hopes of getting the Germans hung up on the Russian tanks' hulls. If their best tactic was to be mobile tank traps, that doesn't exactly speak highly of Russian armor.

    1. Guns are still wing-mounted. Though closer together than the X-wings, they still need to have a focal point, decreasing their firing range and usefulness.
    2. Where is it getting all this power from? A ship with that many sensors, guns, and extra features is going to need a LOT of power. And those engines surely require it too. I am gonna have to disagree. The A-Wing Interceptor is the best Rebel Interceptor. But it was out performed in every way by TIE Interceptors.
    The Interceptor is constantly shown murdering A-Wings in mass. Its cannons are powerful enough to kill any Rebel fighter with a single beam as seen in ROTJ, Blade Squadron, and all the Rebels episodes with TIE Defenders as they have the same cannons.
    The Interceptor and Defender had the most powerful targeting computers in the war, and its likely what gave the TIE Interceptor the edge to get past the A-Wing Interceptors jammers.
    Interceptors and Fighters are very modular, and because the Interceptors have the same reactors TIE Avengers have, they easily could mount shields, hyperdrives, projectile launchers, beam weaponry like tractor beams, tactical beam jammers, all at once with no issue. The TIE Interceptor Squadron Avenger, and the Royal Guard Interceptors did this.
    Also despite what channels say about any TIE, all Rebellion era fighters have 360 3d ftl passive and active sensors of various kinds. The only way they wont see an attacker coming is if they are hard jammed, or preoccupied.

      @GenerationTech  Před 5 lety +12

      I think that was due to the rebels having inferior pilots. Say what you want about the tie fighter but the imperial pilots were the best in the galaxy. And although the interceptor could turn better and had more lasers an a wing had speed shields and concussion missiles. A defender on the other hand would be a bigger problem.

    • @TheMysti97
      @TheMysti97 Před 5 lety +3

      Yeah it depends on the pilot skills. Both fighters were doomed if the other one locked its weapons on it. The shield gives the A-Wing an advantage in theory, but practically it makes no difference if the rapid fireing TIE needs a few more shots. And the missiles can be countered or dodged, it's hard to lock on a equally fast and more maneuverable target anyway. The TIE can be taken out by a few shots, it needs its speed and maneuverability to survive as well as to kill. The A-Wing is better on the paper, but in a real fight it is way closer (not considering the TIEs cost advantage, although the A-Wing has more possible uses).

      @@TheMysti97 Its both the craft and skill. Using a real life example.
      Veteran F-15 pilots in Europe have lost in stimulated engagements with Green Pilots using Typhoons. In this case, the flight characteristics is so much better that the Vet Airforce pilots couldn't beat new pilots.

      True that imperial pilots were the best trained, but the a wing can go anywhere in the galaxy and has shields. You are right that the TIE intercepter was highy changable but movies A wing any otherTIE

    Good video. I always liked the A Wing although it seems a little too small to have all the features it supposedly possessed. Do you think you could do a video examining Correlian corvettes or Nebulan B frigates? I always thought these were pretty cool.

    Where you reference the ARC-170, "aggressive reconnaissance" could refer to two separate roles, attack and recon, like how the RAF classifies some of its aircraft, such as the Tornado GR.Mk4.
    It was tasked with ground attack (G) and recon (R) but it would not likely do them both on the same sortie.

    I always loved the A-Wing, having had a very bad traffic accident, 8 ton truck vs. bicyclist, I spent a lot of time in hospital, because well squish. Since at the time and in the area it was front page news I got visitors one of which was representatives from some of the Star Wars advertising folks and one of the many gifts they gave me was an A-Wing model. The biggest redesign features between Return of the Jedi A-Wing and the Last Jedi, in my opinion, is by slimming down the thickness of the A-Wing allows 2 boxes of A-wings with Last Jedi compared to 1 Box size of the Last Jedi. Movie wise you could hold twice the amount of modern A-Wings when in a stacked launch platform. Oh and the new A-Wing now being able to be used very often since every time it lands it would crush it's tail fins as it only has front landing gear.
