The armor on this ship is extensive, and the shields will protect you from just about anything, which is good, because you won’t be going anywhere fast. The Y-Wing is used mainly as a bomber because it can carry a heavy payload of missiles, torpedoes and bombs. The other important weapon is the topside ION canon, which rather than destroying a target, can disable it for later capture. Our canons have a computer assisted auto-fire feature, so don’t forget that when your in the heat of battle.

Yes, three or four of them (it's been a LONG time since I've seen TLJ) get taken down when a fighter crashes into the bomb bay, but one starts going down after a few seconds of concentrated TIE fire. Also, their shape made a HUGE blindspot, and they were lacking an articulated turret on the front. That could have stopped the blasted TIE from crashing. They were an interesting concept, but ultimately designed to be destroyed and thus not entirely thought through.

Load a Y-Wing up with Concussion missiles, and you've got a effective fighter killer. It takes out as many enemy fighters as it has missiles* at long range, before getting in dogfight range, then it jumps away unless all the fighters have been swatted or it has superiority fighter escorts.
While this cost missiles, it's cheaper than losing a fighter and a effective tactic for quickly thinning the field. Useful if enemy fighters are the only point defense.

But, when I re-watched it on VHS in the early '80s (along with TESB and ROTJ), I began feeling certain appreciations for each side's various fighters. Admittedly, like most, I was an X-wing lover initially. But, with ROTJ, I fell in love with the B-wing, if only by its design as not much of its capabilities were shown. But, the Y-wing was also a favorite, even if it was slower than its X-wing counterpart, its durability and survivability, even for a mostly skeletal framework, reminded me of the A-10 Thunderbolt II. It carried a lot of ouch for Imperial targets, which was played out well with the first gen Y-wings in Clone Wars. Of course in a stunning move nobody could have predicted, the imperial remnants didn't actually destroy their fleets at all, leaving the New Republic completely undefended against their advance, which is why we see only a tiny number of resistance ships and practically no capital ships at all. This is of course completely and utterly retarded and it was done solely as a lazy and creatively bankrupt way to still have the same re-hashed "tiny rebel force vs huge imperial fleet" fight over and over again.

I sure hope the hell not. The b-wing might not have necessarily been the most graceful ship, but by no means does ANY ship in star wars deserve to be compared to the star fortress. Not even the A-9 vigilance. NOT EVEN THE Y-TIE OR X-TIE OR ANY OTHER UGLY SHIP DESERVES TO BE COMPARED TO THE STAR FORTRESS.

The Y was a great fighter. Too bad lazy directors make everything a one shot kill. Closest we came was R1 showing them at least doing something useful.

A mild redesign: Move the engines further forward so they don't stick out beyond the rear of the central hull so much, then move the turret to the rear of the hull so it had a full 180° field of view to the rear. It provides much better defense in a three dimensional battle space and maybe even mix in a laser cannon with the ion so it can do some hurt.
And since the engines are stuck on nacelles, it makes them easy to upgrade or replace. Stick bigger ones one…

Bigger doesn't always mean better (just look at the starfortress). You could use smaller engines with similar output which could increase speed due to less weight or a smaller more powerful engine.

That is what they should've used in TLJ.

You'd think at some point, someone would make a next generation of Y-wing. Just keep the same basic shape, but put in newer generation engines and shields to keep the ship competitive. Maybe also fix up the armor plating so that it's still worth having on the ship. I like the look of the fully armored Y-wing.

The Ion Torpedoes in Rogue One were used after the Shield Dome had been hit, which was only after the fleet had managed to knock the shield down. (Presumably that was partially because the shield was still "Charging up" since the ISDs were caught with their pants down and their swim trunks on from being posted above such a luxurious backwater.)
Though the similar Magpulse torpedoes in Legends I think may have worked through shields, it's been a long time since i played X-Wing Alliance, but I think they bypassed shields with the limitation of only disabling certain parts of the ship like weapons. This made them good for neutralizing a threat but didn't let the fleet quickly take down the ship since the shields would still be up.
