There doesn't even appear to be any kind of docking station or other support structure under it from what we can see. I think we can safely conclude that either: A The Venator class can do surface landings. B: This was an error and the ship wasn't supposed to be able to do that (but it is movie canon that it can do so, and I personally take the films as higher canon than cross-sections or other books, good as they are.) Or C: That there existed a Venator variant that added landing capability, either as an innate design feature, or as a modification to one or more ships. The only other live-action scene with a planet-side Venator that I am aware of is when Anakin and Obi-Wan said goodbye to each other for the last time as friends. czcams.com/video/mm854yq38jY/video.html There are ramps allowing AT-TEs onto the ship, but it is unclear if those are a part of the ship or a ground structure. No landing gear can be seen retracting, but some kind of supports can be seen in the clip. Again, it is uncertain if these are inherent to the design or an external tool. At any rate, regardless of whether or not they had landing gear themselves, Episode III completely proves that it is possible for these ships to land in one way or another. I've always loved the design elements of wedge-shaped ships like the Venator and Imperial class, all the way back to the ancient Sith warships used during the Old Republic, and even the battleships used during the Mandalorian War. It's a design that can be traced back to the very first warships used by major forces in the galaxy.

      Agree with that. The variety of CIS ships was a disadvantage. Difficult to support with a single supply chain and almost certain that you'd never have the right type of ship in the right place when you needed it.
      The Republic got it right with two light cruiser types, one medium (Acclamator) and one universal heavy design that proved it could be upgraded to stay effective. Much simpler logistics, training and manufacture and more likely to have the ship you need where you need it.

    It is kind of ironic that the pro-Tarkin Imperials thought the Venator wasn't intimidating enough. Apparently they thought that one big fat juicy target was more intimidating than a swarm of well designed star fighters, bombers, gunships etc. Had they foregone the Imperial star destroyer line in favor of periodically refitting, upgrading, and developing new versions of the Venator, they could have reallocated their surplus resources to continue researching, developing, and manufacturing good star fighters, bombers, gunships etc. Discontinuing the Venatir design philosophy was the one decision more than any other that contributed to the downfall of the Galactic Empire.

      Plus modifying the design for serving a specialized roles could occur. Need a battleship, supersize the Venator design and keep the same hangar size. Need a pure capital ship, take out the hangar and shorten the length.

    • @mikevasquez1103
      @mikevasquez1103 Před 5 lety +27

      @@redenginner Those are all pretty good ideas. Another thing you could do instead of decreasing the size of a battle modified Venator is replace the hangar door with solid hull plating plating, add torpedo madules, and use the available interior space for an additional reactor some redundant shield generators and a massive payload of proton and ion torpedoes (hence the additional modules) Had they continue to researching newer and better star fighters, bombers, gunships, etc, eventually they would have developed models that had independent hyper drives the US making a dedicated Carrier unnecessary outside of maintenance and re-fueling.

      @@lancer737 Nothing you mentioned is even close to accurate. The Venator can easily be updated to address any flaw in its design. The same cannot be said for the ISD. The TIE fighters were easily outperformed by both the A-wing and X-wing. The ONLY superior starfighter they had was the TIE Defender which never went into widespread production because the Emperor wasted too much money building superweapons and bulky impractical capital ships. The only advantage they ever had was numerical. As far as the interior of the Venator being exposed when they launched their fighters, that is not a design flaw. The problem was that they were utilizing the carriers improperly. A carrier should have launched its fighters while still well beyond the range of any capital ships. Just because a ship is used improperly does not mean it is a bad ship.

    • @mikevasquez1103
      @mikevasquez1103 Před 5 lety +19

      @@lancer737 The rebels lost more fighters during the battle of the Yavin because their starfighters were in a rather poor state of repair, the rebel pilots were overworked, exausted, and barely clinging to hope. Furthermore, the majority of rebel pilots were amateurs. Their few expert pilots were either Imperial defectors or a latent Jedi.The TIE pilots defending the Death Star were the best of the best and likely very well fed and rested. The rebels were also preoccupied with strafing runs and trying to blow up said Death Star. The TIE pilots were most certainly not outnumbered during the battle of Endor regardless of how they were deployed. The argument of superior technology and battle outcome is also inept because many factors besides the quality of a fighter can contribute to victory or defeat. Wedge Antilles Was an expert TIE pilot and he preferred his T65X over the TIE series. Just look at the TIE fighter(also the Interceptor) from a structural perspective. They had no life support, no shielding, negligible armor, their approximation of an eject system existed in a form of two emergency explosives located in the wing pylons, they presented a massive target profile for their size because of those wings, and regardless of their supposedly superior technology, they still had to fire line of sight basically because their visibility was abysmal. This entire argument is irrelevant anyway because my initial statement was based on INCOM recieving full imperial funding. You do realize that the TIE fighter was a scifi analog of the Japanese Mitsubishi zero from WWII don't you?They began as kings of the sky due to their speed and daring pilots, but due to lacking innovation they were quickly outpaced by their Allied counterparts. I'm sorry but you're just plain wrong. Your statements are factually and demonstrably inaccurate. Even the greater lore which draws these very analogs contradicts everything you're saying. The TIE fighters from a filmmaking perspective even, were inferior by design in order to make a rebel victory look believable.

    • @mikevasquez1103
      @mikevasquez1103 Před 5 lety +16

      @@lancer737 Oh you mean besides George Lucas himself saying exactly that a multiple occasions? The TIE fighter is cheap and easy to produce. Those are it's only two merits. The x wing and the a wing are just better than. Their weapons, defenses, reliability, durability, are superior. Their shielding and independent hyperdrive also make them far more versatile. Basic infantry weapons can shoot down TIE fighters. Rebel starfighter superiority was the biggest non Jedi contributing factor to the overthrow of the Empire. All of the star fighters from Star Wars were based on World War II fighter planes. Even the dog fights were based on World War II dogfights. That's the whole reason they're banking and rolling in deep space as if there was an atmosphere. Seriously read a book about Star Wars that isn't a Star Wars novel or a comic book and you would know this. If you can't grasp such a simple concept then there is no point continuing this debate.

    honestly one of the best ships ever built, terrifying to face, so versatile that it was hard to take advantage of a weakness, a ship that could launch an army to attack any warship it faces, and heavily armed so it could fight other warships by itself, and win. With later modifications like the added beam cannon or whatever it was to the bottom of the cruisers that can obliterate ships with one hit, or seriously damage them to the point of near destruction... The Venator was one hell of a warship, capable of taking on almost any role needed, and the Empire decided to get rid of it. I would really love to see this ship come back in the star wars universe, as a sort of "screw you and you Imperial warships", that and the Venator also is probably one of the best looking ships out there on top of best design and functionality/versatility.

      The class deserves symmetry. Allow for a superstructure ridge running the rear length of the bottom hull up until the ventral docking bay mounting a forward-firing superheavy cannon instead of Skywalker's patch job modification. Set alongside it a bank of four octuple batteries to mirror the arrangement on the upper hull. You don't need to remove the flight deck on a battleship variation.
      There's more than enough real estate to turn the Venator into a proper battleship without sacrificing starfighter operations. Though you might find it necessary to eliminate any planetary assault operations capability.

    The versatile role of this ship could both support imperials against capital ships, and provide much needed anti-fighter defense grid.

    I love the Venator. Always have since I saw it the first time on the big screen, but years later after I learned the stats of it there has always been one thing that bugged me. Why was it never heavily modified? Like the rebels did with the Mon Cal ships. I mean It can have close to 300 support craft, witch outclasses both the ISD and the MC80 by 4 to one for the ISD and almost 10 to one for the MC80. If the Rebels could add fire power to city ships, You could cut the support craft compliment in half, still have around 150 support craft, witch still beats doth the rebels and empire ships and now you have more then enough space to add some more shield generators and reactors to power both the shields and increase the fire power 10 fold. You could literally have a ship that can stand toe to toe with a MC80 and a ISD, and probably win. And I know the Resurgence class is technically the love child of a ISD and Venator but if we are talking in just the Galactic Civil war time The Venator would be seem to be the perfect ship for the Rebels to modify. Cut the support craft in half(since the rebels didnt have the star fighters number advantage), increase the fire power, and put a Mon Cal Shield or 2 on and Boom. you got a flying tank with a swarm of bees still in it. Or the empire could do something like that. It just seemed to go to waste after the clone wars.

    • @hanzzel6086
      @hanzzel6086 Před 5 měsíci

      Well, the Rebels did operate a (unnamed) Venator. And the Imperial's used (at least) 1 as a flight school. Aside from that I can think of 5 reasons why the Rebellion couldn't/wouldn't do what you suggested: First) stealing a full sized capital ship (even from a scrap yard) is very hard, much harder than a frigate (like a Nebulon B). Second) finding parts, by the time of the battle of Yavin there would barely be any left anywhere. And most that were left would be war wrecks (and thus the likelihood of there being usable parts would be slim to non). Third) Finding the manpower to properly man such a large ship would also be very difficult. Part of what made the Mon Cala ships so useful to the Rebellion was thier small crew size. Partially from thier previous lives as *cargo and luxury cruise liners* (fuck Disney and their "they were buildings" nonsense) both of which need to keep (especially engineering) operating crew sizes small (and cheap, aka, inexperienced/poorly trained), whereas the Venator had no such pressures and had a very crew intense design (and they needed to be at the very least well trained). And fourth) The modifications you suggested would also be pretty resource intense. And it still wouldn't be able to survive a direct engagement with an Imperial, although it would probably fair better than most Mon Cala cruisers.

    - Extend dorsal landing zone to aft, making large landing strip.

    - Connect bridges together. And, probably, connect necks together. Sorry, but this is just silly.

      The bridges of the Venator are like most bridges in Star Wars extremly exposed. This never really gets exploided by capital ships, but star fighters do. The two bridges create some kind of redundancy. There have been instances, their one of the Venators bridges was destroyed, but the Venator survived the engament, due to its secondary bridge. Connecting them would weaken the ship.

    Those didn't look lile PD to me (Weapon strengh, fir rate, firering angle don't match) so where are those counted in the Venator's armament?
    Am I wrong and those are the PD, are those a special modificaton like Anakain did with the SPHAT in the ventral hangarbays just with other artillery (they look pretty similar to the "regular" artillery used by the Clones, see battle of Cristophsis or 2nd battle of Geonosis) on some other Venators or is there some other explanation (Canon or Legends) where to count those in the Venators armament?

    Great stuff as always. Would love to get a video about the RZ-2 A-wing, particularly with its improvements over the prior model and the advantages offered by its fully rotating cannons.

      I'd much prefer a video on the A-wing's true successor the RZ-1 Mark II

    I love that this ship was abandoned almost immediately following order 66. They are commonly found in every scrap yard in the galaxy being cut apart for anything valuable. It makes for a much more interesting narrative and world to have these ships as abandoned military surplus of a bygone era then if they had kept them in service and they were just phased out.

    I'm wondering why it isn't 1138 meters in length.

    A pity, all the lives aboard it, needlessly lost to the misuse of the Venator.

      Grand Admiral Thrawn With some modifications, and if it had a smaller crew, thrawn would have a field day with the Venator.

    Even after a year this is one of the best ships designs out there that led to productions of others based on it. For the Republic! ahh the nostalgia of clone wars. What a well made video.

    I had always loved the venator mainly because when I first saw it in episode 3 and in the clone wars t.v. show, I enjoyed the way it had used the 2 command bridges and multiple cannons are a perfect design for republic cruisers

    Thank you for pointing out the SPHA-Ts being used in the Battle of Coruscant. I learned that a while ago in a video by MetaNerdz Lore, and from the release of the new Battlefront II onward, the turbolasers mounted IN FRONT OF THE HANGAR have really bothered me. Great video as well. :)
