7:46 THANK YOU FOR FINALLY BEING THE ONE (from what I've seen) THAT POINTED THIS OUT!
And what bothers me the most is that people seem to love the soundtrack (and the composer [Kensuke Ushio]) and no one seemed to care at all for this detail that just ruined every scene (and ruined like every song).

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about the anime adaptation of Tokyo Ghoul and Tokyo Ghoul:re. For some reason there seems to be a trend in anime were storys which in the scource material are told from subjective viewpoints, instead are told from a "objective" third-person viewpoint. It's like they only care about the plot events and not characters or themes. It seems like they have forgotten that the plot is supposed to be a "vehicle" to transport the ideas, concepts and themes. In the new Boogiepop anime and in the Tokyo Ghoul anime adaptations the "vehicle" is all that exists but it is empty.

I honestly laughed at Nagi getting stabbed. They could've done it better but it looked like they were going the cheap route.
My expectations are extremely low for the rest of the anime. And yes, it does seem like the imaginator arc might be better since it does have a bunch of more intense stuff. But it'll most likely be done in 5 episodes, which is terrible.
Also it seems the omnibus seven seas released doesn't include the translation notes which sucks.
I watch these episodes. But I just end of giggling at the things that were cut. "Ha that doesn't make sense." "That looked awkward because of this." "They must've looked _____ to anime only watchers because they don't know the character's thoughts."
***Certain spoilers to the next episodes.***
I bet Aya is going to have a certain scene censored. That scene where she exposed her chest. It made me go "Ooohh so that's what happened." I don't know why but that scene just kinda introduced her character to me, showed me how different she was I guess.
But really. This won't turn out well at all. But at least you can make more videos about it.

I think the people liking the anime also like stuff like Baccano and Kara no Kyoukai (I haven't seen either of em), where as far as I know it's just wacky shit happening out of order with a mysterious tone and by the end you finally get what's going on. Anyways, Concrete Revolutio is the best version of that type of show, go watch it people.

I have to say, watching the fourth episode, I feel like fans of the first novel really got the short end of the stick here. In comparison, the first episode of VS Imaginator breathes a lot better than any of the previous episodes, and takes it's time to let things unfold. It really feels like this was the story the staff wanted to tell, and the first book feels as like a rushed project made out of obligation in comparison.

As an anime-only guy, about 25% of the people on Reddit seem to have dropped it either after episode two, and the only ones continuing are those somewhat interesting. I have heard nobody say any praise for this show higher than "Huh. Seems interesting. Kinda getting Kara no Kyoukai vibes. Seems kinda fun. I like the OP/ED".
I personally found the "figuring out what's going on" kinda fun, but the rest pretty bland or mediocre.

I can't really say I'm "enjoying" the show, for a lot of the reasons you listed-but I'm sticking with it. It's mostly just because it's so unique and different from pretty much any anime I've seen before, and feels like something straight out of Stranger Things. I'm curious to see where it goes. I read the first novel after first videos. And I liked it, I feel like I can come back to it and find something new to appreciate.
And I glanced over first episode of new and old anime.
It feels like the old one aimed to capture feeling of novel (and include content from other books? or expand on the world). I got immersed and interested.
In new one, its like they have some list with checkboxes of events, without context of what made them interesting. I didn't recognize the characters just from design = bad design. High resolution is what makes it easy to see mediocre animation, and I didn't see sakuga to justify that. I somewhat liked the op and the posters, and even this is a stretch just to say something nice. (smartphones lol wat)
If you not gonna go all out why even bother. Such a waste

I feel like the Worldview and Themes aren't as gone as you think they are, you're just loosing sight of them in complaining about specifics you wanted.
I think Boogiepop's gender identity was made less ambiguous in how the books were translated. In the LA version I just watched there is a translator's note about how Boogie uses "Boku" and they didn't seem to necessarily be identifying as male. Also episode 11 has the scene where Boogiepop talks to the therapist.

The one thing you mentioned that really do disagree with is the wire thing. I'm fine with them making the wires more magical in nature earlier on, because its impossible to believe that Boogiepop would have been able to set up the wires realistically for the ending of the Imaginator arc, which this anime adaptation will cover, so it might just have been better to forgo a more realistic use of the wires since the next time we see them used they definitely seem magical in nature.

Maybe it should have gone to Takahio Oomori to direct. He handled ensemble cast with super natural elements well with Bacanno and Durarara. He'd even done horror before with Hellgirl. I feel like the opening narration of Durarara which told you the focus characters outlook would have been useful for showing who they are. When toning down character designs to make them "more realistic" they kinda just made them duller. IDK from the staff listed I thought this was going to be really good but I find myself baffled.

In terms of directing/storyboarding, I feel like they're trying to be subversive by cutting the tension out of their scenes and presenting stuff in a more flat/direct way. They hard cut to stuff like the guy running away, present Nagi's throat getting slit in a plain manner, and cut the audio out when they kill the manticore.
Unfortunately it just ends up deflating the scenes and making it awkward.

  • @AntiNihilist
    @AntiNihilist Před 5 lety +1

I've already bought the books but I still want to see the anime first.
I can't say whether I like the series but I certainly don't hate it. The main appeal is how it is slow paced, has a very unconventional story even if most of the details are lost, and the mystery of what is happening never infuriates me unlike when I watch most anime and they foreshadowing something literally 10 minutes before it happens every. single. time.
This was also why I dropped Boruto in the first episode. In the first 2 minutes they foreshadowed Naruto's death, the destruction of the village, Boruto getting a stupid new eye power, the identity of the villain, and that all this won't happen until Boruto is about 5 to 10 years older than his is at the series' start.
Honestly I can watch anything as long as there is a mystery or feeling of uncertainty. I don't think that's asking for much. The Promised Neverland and Mob Psycho do this effortlessly.

  • @cocoroach_ok

I think I just don't give a fuck about this anime. It feels so.. disconnected. Like this anime is just a highlight about the actual story. And no one has any personality. This show is just full of trying to be cool and deep but awkward and just not interesting in the end. I get if they wanna adapt as much as they can, but this is just butcher the book. I wanna drop this anime, but ... nope. I just wanna see how this show goes. I have The Promised Neverland, Mob Psycho 100, and Kaguya sama after all this season at least.
