Or or we use that patreon money to buy a room, lock Digibro with a "how to learn Japanese" and then leave him in there for 2 months.
Digi kills two birds with one stone, he is now able to read the manga AND he will be able to read Japanese!

I love this series so much. I watched Boogiepop Phantom repeatedly without knowing anything about the larger IP because I thought that the anime was all there was to the story. It's like trying to glean everything about the Star Wars universe from the Tales of the Bounty Hunter collection of short stories. Agh. Somehow I got enough of the larger meta-plot that I had to write it all down, before turning it into a review for T.H.E.M. Anime (one of the old anime review websites). I think, surprisingly, the synopsis still holds up even if my writing was atrocious. Anyways. All that to say, I love this anime, and I love this series of videos you're doing. It gave me a reason to watch Welcome to the NHK, and a reason to re watch Boogiepop Phantom yet again. Thanks Digibro.

  • @linajones1337

Man, my heartbreak moment was Kino's Journey. Fell in the love with the anime, hunted down the Japan-exclusive OVAs, and discovered it was an LN series, and vol. 1 was already out. So I bought that, excited to read the stories. Well, the first volume was pretty much all covered in the anime, but that was alright, since we also saw a different perspective on some of the episodes. So then, I wait for Volume 2... and waited... and waited... and waited... and finally, someone "leaked" that it had been canceled, the publisher just never said anything.
I tried reading some of the fan translations, but I find such project difficult to read because of how they just don't flow well. It's a really shame, because some of the stories apparently follow other characters on their journies, too, and that could have been cool to see.

Apparently, that was pretty common practice at the time. Manga was really booming, so they were just shotgunning as many vol.1's as they could get the rights to, seeing what was selling the most and keep printing those, and then quietly drop all the rest without saying anything.

About that "spend the years to master the language" thing, I sometimes think that attitude is a big reason so many weebs can't learn Japanese despite consuming nothing but Japanase shit all their life.
People keep doing stupid shit like memorizing vocabulary lists and filling notebooks with kanji for years, dreaming of that perfect honeymoon with a novel of their dreams once the training arc is over, except it's never going to be over since the actual thing they need to grind to master nihingo is reading the fucking books they want.

  • @DariusVladimirAuditore

Speaking of Jojo, it really shows that he was a fan, not just in the musical references, but other certain references in the story. Like I always thought Boogiepop's outfit is reminiscent of Jotaro's school uniform. But one interesting bit was in Vs Imaginator part 2, where Spooky E described the chemical weapon he was using as the virus of Purple Haze from Jojo Part 5, with a slight twist that he would use when he created Purple Haze Distortion in his Jojo novel, Purple Haze Feedback. I thought that was interesting.

It's different but if you like Boogie Pop, youd probably like 1000 Tales. It's really good. It has a lot of the extreme mystery/suspense intrigue I got from BoogiePop. Also, the discontinued manga Homunculus was a LOT like BoogiePop. Super good mysterious. Ends abruptly. Guess it wasnt popular enough.

Listening to the opening, are you me? With Haruhi Suzumiya and SAO really making light novel adaptations huge with stuff like Toradora, Durarara, DanMachi, Devil is a Part Timer, etc all coming out, I always hoped for more Boogiepop. And now all these years later, FINALLY a new anime and FINALLY Seven Seas will release novels 4 and 5. Who knows if this is just going to start the cycle over but hopefully this time it'll get enough attention to at least get some fan translations of the books if we can't get 7+. And no there are no fan translations, I've looked for years.

I found this podcast episode to be very interesting, vagueness and all. I had actually just started looking into the anime series, so it's interesting to now know how little it had to do with the actual source material. It does make me a little hesitant to now watch the anime, because what if I love it and then want to experience more and can't? My struggle to acquire and read all of Ghost Hunt-- a series where all but the final volume was translated-- is still fresh enough in my mind to put off getting into Boogiepop just yet...

About your point with being in love with a series that is not fully translated in Japanese -- magical fans understand the pain of that for a bunch of titles from the 80's and preceeding. Yes, I can understand some Japanese and would love to read the Boogiepop novels and remember Seven Seas had a lot of random ideas for translations that didn't seem to work out.

  • @MegaCposey
    @MegaCposey Před 5 lety

I loved boogiepop and others. I read all the ones that came out. Boogiepop and Others, Boogiepop vs. Imaginator Part 1, 2. And Boogiepop at Dawn. It was awesome. It was existential, subtly unsettling, and even comforting, and very sad. Boogiepop vs Imaginator was my favorite arch especially with Shinjiro, who was a closet gay. It really subverted the dynamic of Masaki, who's like the typical Shounen male. I loved the references of Prince with Spook E and Camile ( both characters are named after his multiple-personalities). I know the others are coming out because of the anime now. So I'm looking forward to reading the other novels.

I've been getting into Nisio Isin novels and these sound similar, but way more strange. I guess this is a part of Japanese culture that doesn't translate or more precisely hasn't been translated. Also Haruki Murakami does musical allusions to old rock tracks, so that could be where that habit got picked up from.

Yeah omfg I want my book to 100% be musical references. Have a religious character who constantly says "I'm going for the one!". Or a porn direction who's director alias is "close to the edge". It's one of those things that is so dorky and lame that it is actually a modulus function and becomes cool as shit. Also yeah holy fuck boogiepop sounds cool as fuck, wish there could be a kara no kyoukai style anime.

Learn a second language: i.e. Japanese..... I think it can't be nearly as time consuming as ranting for hours/days/years of your life on anime. I would think because of the passion for an originally Japanese media and because of the vast amount of exposure to the language Digi would have would make it only simpler to learn Japanese. What's wrong with the majority of Americans who are monolingual.

Milhouse Van Houten You can buy the japanese novels, take pics as proof and then ask for up to date scanlations, that's how the only group doing them deals.

I find it funny that my experience with boogiepop is the exact opposite. I loved every little think about the anime and then read the mangas and translated novels and I could hold all the disapointment. I'd love to see how the later novels go to have a final feeling about the franchise.
On the music subject, I don't think it is that weird to try and follow the references. I took notes on all the albums and name drops in High Fidelity when I was like 13. When you're defining your tastes and find references to other genres inside stuff you loved you'll obviously try to see if those give you the same reaction. I don't know if you'll find this as a compliment or an insult but I think you're pretty normal on that regard.

If that represents chaos, clearly you've never been to Canada
Because here, snow in april almost feels like a standard thing.

If you care so much, pay for it to be translated. I did that for the obscure series I cared about.

The whole idea with soundtracks for a read is what a lot of new (mostly korean) webtoons do today. Maybe you should look into some of them, i think they are fresher than a lot of japanese stuff today.
