    I feel you on Cowboy Bebop. I've wanted to analyze it scene by scene, episode by episode, for YEARS now, but there's no way I could ever do it justice. Each episode feels like its own densely packed movie, and the emotions it makes me feel are so strong that the only words I can use to describe to people why it's my favorite show are "Just go fucking watch it and cry and think about it and cry some more."

    Hah. Once you started talking about Inuyasha, I paused the video to grab my Kirara plushie out of my room. Even though I can recognize now that it's garbage, I just thought that show was the best thing ever when I was younger. I still have a lot of fond memories, too, like that time I took an old window pole, a whole shit-ton of tin foil, and some Halloween spider web fluff and put together my own crappy replica of the Tetsusaiga.
    Also, I was a girl in my early teens watching this show, so in hindsight I'm realizing that Inuyasha was basically my Twilight? I mean, they're both stories about a teenage girl falling in love with some sort of supernatural boy, with wolf boy third wheels. Except Kagome actually had a personally and agency, and Inuyasha's plot actually had some excitement and stakes.

      It baffels me how everybody always mentions Outlaw Star and Trigun alongside Cowboy Bebop. I watched Trigun for the first time very recently and I just think it was a really REALLY bad show. Honestly boring and a slog to sit through, cheap animation, lame characters, stupid story. I only watched a few episodes of OS, got bored, and it's been on my backlog ever since. I can't say much about it but from what I've seen I honestly doubt it's going to be anywhere near as good as Bebop. That is because Cowboy Bebop is a masterpiece. The only reason OS and Trigun are always associated with Bobop is because they were airing on adult swim and had similar themes, but they're not worth the praise and barely worth watching at all. But that's just my opinion.

    • @Icynova

    • @Kingofshapes
      @Kingofshapes Před 7 lety +3

      The reason you get the batman TAS vibe is actually due to the fact that Sunrise, the producer of the show, was a subcontractor for Warner brothers studios and helped make Batman TAS. Sunrise also of course worked on Cowboy Bebop as well so its not that surprising that you feel those shows are close together.

    I watched Kekkaishi on Adult Swim in the common room at the top floor of my freshman dorm room. It was a sort of consistency with my past that acted as relief from the overwhelmingly taxing, hyper-social environment of be accidentally choosing the party dorm because it was coincidentally sharing a similar name with a Shakespeare character. I won't say it was an amazing show, but it was there at a good a good time in my life for me to appreciate it. No one was in the party dorm on Saturday night. Everyone was out drinking/getting high. So the entire room became mine, and I even slept there frequently XD. Once or twice people were actually there, and I could tell they would feel like they were intruding on my space; though I always welcomed them anyway.

    I remember my first experience with Adult Swim was Yu Yu Hakusho as well and then Fooly Cooly. Originally, I caught Fooly Cooly at the episode "Firestarter" and thought it was just a fever dream, since it was so...weird to me. It wasn't until next week that I realized it was an actual show and it was due to FLCL that I started to look more into anime. After that, my friend Hailey introduced me to Fullmetal Alchemist and the manga of Bleach, and then my downward spiral just. Happened.
    Edit: Also, I'm hyped as fuck for the Eva video coming next.

      Princess Bubblegum did nothing wrong
      IKR, I'm eight years younger and I only vaguely remember adult swim before it was shut down. For me, I was introduced to anime when a Funimation section was added on On-Demand. Every couple of weeks, three new episodes were added for a series and once when ended a new series would take its place. I think my first show was either School Rumble or Full Metal Panic (I watched Yugioh, Pokémon and Dragonball Z/Kai but I don't really count those). That was about 6 or 7 years ago... Back then I didn't really pirate, so I went back to Adult Swim for anime when they started airing Attack on Titan.

  • @pawndidater
    @pawndidater Před 7 lety

    My story is similar in some ways. I was first introduced to anime through my cousin as well. My favorite shows were already stuff like Pokemon and Yugioh, but that didn't really register to me as different from other cartoons. I started to kind of get it when he pulled me into his room to watch the premiere of the Naruto dub on whatever that was on, and I saw more of it catching the occasional episode of Cowboy Bebop or Fullmetal Alchemist when I was at his house. Besides Naruto I could barely grasp any of it, but it just felt really cool. It was probably just the sheer violence and maturity that was atypical of anything animated and western that really sunk into me. Probably the inciting incident to finally turn me into a true fan was catching FLCL epsisodes 1 and 5 and some of Durarara which completely blew my mind beyond what I thought was possible. That said, I didn't actually start consuming a lot of anime until some of my friends in high school told me there was some on Netflix and that I should watch this great show Sword Art Online.

    Right now, being 21 years old, I'm watching Cowboy Bebop for the first time. I've just finished watching episode 13 and had to come somewhere to talk about it.
    This show makes me feel weird. Every time an episode ends I just feel happy. No matter what happened I'm just glad that I was able to watch it and experience it. I dunno. It's the bittersweet stories, the silly humor, the little details and references scattered around.
    I get you. I'm a literature student, so I kinda know how to analyze a narrative piece of art. Yet I wouldn't know how to tackle Cowboy Bebop. I can't point out what makes it so special. I guess I just have to finish it and think about it some more.
    Anyway, I just wanted to say: Don't be afraid of watching it again. It's fucking beautiful.

    Back in 2003-2004 was when I heard about Trigun. I started watching Tenchi Muyo back in 2000 before I started watching Toonami. My first shows from 2000-2005 were Sailor Moon (US Air Version), Dragon Ball Z (US Air Version), Dragon Ball (US Air Version), ,Gundam Wing [was not much of a fan of Gundam for whatever reason at the time but when I watched Endless Waltz was what got me into Gundam], Rurouni Kenshin, Outlaw Star [loved this show] and Gundam Seed. I watched episodes 23 and 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion back in 2003 because someone brought their badly ripped from VHS copies of Evangelion over and watched End of Evangelion of at first I did not like but would for some reason had left an imprint on my mind that in December of 2005 because I had this random want to watch Evangelion for whatever reason for maybe intuition was involved and ended up watching episodes 23 and 24 as well as End of Evangelion and ended up liking it. Got introduced to a show called El-Hazard and I got introduced to Ah My Goddess by way of the movie back in 2005. Moved to Texas in July of 2005 so I was and just spent much of my time in my room and stopped watching Toonami all together. Got into shows like Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex back in November of 2005 of which I would eventually watch in its entirety back in January of 2007. Got introduced to Yoko Kanno back in 2005. Watched the first 6 episodes of RahXephon back in July of 2006. Did not want to get into InuYasha because it was too long. Watched a OVA called Bastard! back in 2007. Tried to watch Wolf's Rain back in 2006 but ended up not going back to it until 2014. Heard about Vision of Escaflowne back in 2006 but eventually got around to watching it as well as Cowboy Bebop in 2014. I watched Genesis of Aquarion back in 2015.

This anime showed all the tragedies in life in the most philosophical way, but it did not blind it. Because in reality we can't see the tragedies clearly. For the first time in my life, I was so impressed by the fact that I couldn't find out the past of the main character.

      Cassius Lives Escaflowne is the first cartoon that made me think "maybe some of these cartoons are made in japan". It's still one of my favorite anime to this day.

    The only reason I can think of for people watching toonami nowadays is if they specifically watch dubs and the show they're looking for isn't available anywhere else (legally).

    It's interesting that my experience was so different.
    From the moment I was introduced to anime as a medium separate from Western cartoons, I was consuming it digitally. Somewhere around 2003. Never bought any DVDs or watched it on TV.
    Might be because my first "anime" was a pirated DVD of the Japanese Naruto and Bleach. Pacific Mall was a seriously shady place to do business.

  • @TX_LoveGame

    Also I sometimes still watch the current Toonami because I largely prefer dubs and they'll usually have the new dubbed episode of whatever before it's available on Kissanime or something. I usually leave my TV on for background noise anyway so if there's nothing to do on a Saturday it'll be a fun little thing to watch.

    pilo candidate was filler, was suppose to air on daytime instead. Adult swim had time constraints, so they chose pilot candidate to fill in. tenchi on adult swim was the same version on Toonami, also because they're just lazy :P

    When the hell were you in school? I pretty distinctly remember watching all of Toonami and staying up late enough to catch FMA right when Adult Swim started immediately after Toonami ended. Am I completely remembering wrong? Or were you in school at like 9pm???

    I first saw Cowboy Bebop as a teenager on Adult Swim and it was the first episode. I was pretty shocked by the graphic violence (I was a bit of a wuss with that sorta stuff) But I watched the whole thing with my mouth agape and I was in love. It's been a huge influence on me as a writer, as a Pen & Paper Rper. Pretty much every single character I've roleplayed are Spike in some shape or form. He's one of my favourite characters, ever. Sorry this old fanboy will stop his gushing now. lol

    Why did I think you were a 90s Sci-fi network anime kid like me? Either way, interesting perspective. I like how in the 90s we all watched the same shows though. Now I wear an anime hoodie and nobody knows what show it's from because we all watch different ones of the 80 shows that are on per season.

    I think the quality of the dubs for the good shows on Adult Swim are a big contributing factor for why that bloc helped popularize anime in the West in general. Dub quality is so sketchy a lot of the time but most of the shows on AS (that were worth watching in the first place) were very well done which is important because when you're a teenager in particular you don't really want to read while you're trying to watch something, or put up with some awful dub with exaggerated voice acting that makes you feel like you're watching a cartoon intended for kids. Plus, anime is such a visual medium that you really do lose a lot when your eyes are plastered to the subtitles throughout an episode.
    Also, god damn, Steve Blum may be a bit of a meme now for being that guy who is in everything and immediately identifiable because he always does the same voice, but that voice will always be Spike Spiegel as far as I'm concerned. Absolutely perfect casting right there.

Later in my life I rewatched it and I felt pretty much the same way you described it. it didn't mean as much to me as it did when I was a kid, but I never really understood why. Maybe it has something to do with it being a coming of age story?

    This may be the ramblings of an old man, but there is something to be said about the loss of "The Event." you can read any manga and watch any anime ever on the internet with the click of a button. Back when North America got physical monthly copies of shonen jump, when that book came in the mail it was an event. Finally I get see the next chapter of all these stories that I've been waiting a month to see. Now you can read an entire manga series in like two hours, as long as it's not one piece. The net result for me anyways is I just don't read much manga anymore, because it's not special anymore. Same could be said for anime probably a little less so.
