    Man I love Eureka Seven. It's been in my top 10 for a while now, even though it seems lots of people have forgotten it. It had me hooked since the very first few seconds, which has been a pretty rare experience. Great coming of age story, great character dynamics and growth, great soundtrack, pretty much great everything. (PS: Anemone>Eureka)
    It also lived on through Xam'd (kind of a spiritual sequel) so if anyone wants more of E7 without having to deal with Ao or does't like the alternate timeline movie, they can try that.
    And Arjuna is a nostalgic anime for me, I really need to rewatch and see how it holds up. The last time I watched it, I was in my early teens I think.
    Digi, also, would be wonderful if one day you'd talk about Key the Metal Idol. It's such an underrated gem.

      It took the premise of EVA, and gave the psychotic characters people to rely on. Like its scary how many aspects have a direct paralell, and it is still such a different story.

    • @Greener221
      @Greener221 Před 7 lety

      Well, this is certainly a cheery little comment thread. You guys mind ruining it in the name of threatening me to watch Eureka Seven?
      From how Digi's described it, it seems to make a nice gauge for how to measure both mine and Digi's tastes without really being anything that could make me feel spoiled towards other anime. Only problem is that I'm insanely squeamish and lazy towards watching anything new, so I usually need to be threatened or given some other incentive to start on new things.

  • @RonaldCorbin14
    @RonaldCorbin14 Před 7 lety +19

    I still love Eureka Seven today. It's so rare to see good romance and I connect with this show so much. I love how it shows so many different world views and people and then moves on. It kind of reminds me of Cowboy Bebop with it's different world views that change the characters subtly.

  • @SalvadorNero1
    @SalvadorNero1 Před 7 lety +29

    Ive watched the show 4 times through my life, at all ages from teen - adult. It holds up completely. And yeah, now that I'm older, I relate to Holland/Talho a bit more, but it doesn't hold the Renton/Eureka storyline back at all. Just gives it new context. Now that its on Crunchyroll, I highly recommend giving it another try.
    Interesting thing I saw on the rewatch: Episode 1/2 have the same structure as Evangelion ep. 1/2. It's pretty interesting to see how many similarities the two shows have, and in a way how similar the morals are. (Corraleans/humans leaning to communicate vs. Breaking down of social barriers (AT fields) to learn to understand each other)
    Oh yeah, I am one of the few who watched Eureka AO. While I didn't hate it completely, It is definitely nowhere near as memorable. It just seemed so, uninspired. Its like Eureka Seven without the counter culture/romance/music.

      yea for what it was AO wasn't terrible imo, but I think if it was a totally separate IP they probably could've created something far more satisfying. it really felt to me like nirvash and eureka were superficial references rather than integral parts of the show, and i think that was the worst part about the show tbh. it seemed like most of the plot-critical connections to the original series were all shoehorned into the last 3 episodes and they didn't make a whole lot of sense :(

I have bought tons of physical and digital media over the years and revisited a lot of them (even if my libraries are now large enough that I've outpaced my ability to play/read/listen/etc.), but it wasn't until last year, visiting my first ever convention and finding an artist from the Netherlands no less that I've loved the style of for years, that I finally understood why people buy posters.
      Now, figurines on the other hand, I'm still scratching my head at.

    Eureka 7 is the perfect coming of age story. It's about a young teenage brat (Renton) who throws his life at home away to go live with his lifelong idols and a cute, enigmatic girl, only to be crushed by the cruel realities of the world and people around him, learn from his shortcomings, and work his way up to being a man who can stand beside the people he idolizes.

    I know this series didn't get as many views, but I know that wasn't the point of it. It was nice to listen to while going about the daily tasks of an adult in his late 20s. It reminded me of Super Eyepatch Wolf's stuff, which caters to a different audience (more moderate Anime consumers than diehard).

    Kenichi Yoshida is MY GUY. Love that dude's work. He has this wonderful sense of shapeliness with his character designs that is woefully hard to find in the realms of anime/anime aesthetic. Like, dude I could write a whole book on why his character designs for Eureka Seven are the BEST DAMN THING EVER.
    I honestly think a lot of what makes Eureka Seven so great is due to Kenichi Yoshida. I feel like a lot of the magic of Eureka Seven is owed to him. When looking him up, his list of credits for the show is MASSIVE, especially in contrast to other show's he's worked on. (Granted he could just be getting undercredited for his work on other series, it does seem like a lot of his work is going un/underdocumented). If wikipedia is to be believed he was even responsible for the ENTIRE DAMN FOURTH ED! Granted, the fourth ED is basically just a storyboard, but consider how much that one ED adds dramatic weight to the narrative and lore of the series. Dude is a fucking boss and my hero.

    I love this format, because of how long these episodes are, and I'd like to see more. You should try your thoughts on different genres- kind of like what you did with the yuri and light novel episodes. What did each genre do right? what did they do wrong? What shows that are the pinnacle of each genre? What obscure shows fell flat in most ways, but did a really good job of displaying a specific genre. I feel like you would have some nice insight on this subject, and could get a minimum of 7 episodes on this.

      It's more like, something that really resonated with you and/or motivated you to make changes in your life and had a huge impact on you not having the same impact. A show that you held in high regard may not be all that great and it's a weird sort of sadness. A really exaggerated example of this in another situation: Your grandfather was always very loving to you but when you grew up you realized he was a pedophile who molested children. It's exaggerated, like I said, but it doesn't feel good when the image you have of a show doesn't match its actual quality.

    Eureka Seven is timeless classic in my opinion. Two of my first mech anime were code geass and Gundam Seed(yeah, poor me), and although I was blown away by the visuals and edgy story, but I always had a grudge against those series for pulling bullshit plots and brain-fucked my 13 years old mind. Eureka Seven is one of the few anime series and resolved my grudge against mecha genre; I genuinely like the romance like I did with Suka Suka this season. Maybe I'm just being a BONES fanboy, I don't know.

    over last 10 years i watched Eureka7 over 10 times, i feel like this show should be watched in a loop. AO wasn't bad for what it was, only reqire a lot of overhead thinking and nostalgia to swallow it the fact that Ao did not let his father (Renton) steal the finale as kind of rewarding. i don't think watching Eureka seven now would feel much different to me now. it was always kind of guilty pleasure shounen to me, where i was thinking more about a whole package than the main characters. Like asuming that Nirvash is a girl and so on.
    Watch Eureka Seven again, you will discover 2nd bottom , and not loose fun from it. (i think)

    Definitely found this series very interesting, for me personally, the only major piece of media related to anime I spent a lot of money on when I was younger was manga. I bought every single issue of the series Negima! from my local bookstore for a fairly ridiculously inflated price (over $30 per issue), mostly because I had no idea I could just read it all online. Plus being in AUS anime was not a very common thing. I still appreciate it because it was probably the thing that got me invested into the medium in the first place. Also i hate to be THAT GUY, (I didn't scroll down far enough to see if anyone else has tried to make this correction) but Chitose from girlish number has a special place in my heart as she does yours ;)

    I love Eureka Seven, if one series has to be number one for me, it woulb be Eureka. And I understand if people say they have problems with the start, I didn't love at that much in the beginning too. After I finished the series I revisited the first two episodes, and then these episodes got me. I realized how much they forshadowed and how much groundwork was layed out during those episodes.
    I even did after seeing your "Recognizing a good anime in 1 episode". You stated there that a first episode has to lay the tone for what's to come and that's the reason why some first episodes seem to be boring on the first watch. But just for the first, in the second rewatch you will see all the details. I rembered that I felt bored by the first episodes of Eureka Seven, so I checked out if your theory works. Guess what, you were right.
    Little side note: I sae your Eva analysis series nit so long ago and realized that the first and second episode of Eureka Seven made with their episode-structure a clear reference to the first and second epiaode of Evangelion.

    Right now, I'm still not sure where I'm gonna be in the future, as I started an artistic career that might or might not work out in the long run. I'm certainly not as productive as you, which is why I really liked your videos about "not trying to be Digi"(sorry, not sure about the title anymore). Anyway, in that regard, I think I could still watch and enjoy Eureka 7.
    But the one thing I never really got to terms with even after I had finished the show, was how much physical abuse by Holland Renton had to endure.
    That's an aspect of the show(you call it "bumping heads" and character development) that until now never sat right with me. Abuse, physically or mentally, never meant any development to me, from personal experience, but rather regression or halt of development. So, in a way, the show actually helped me form a very strong opinion about something, but at the same time prevented me from going back to it.
    It's a bit sad to me, and I do wonder if I should bite the bullet and rewatch it, just for the chance to maybe come to terms with it...

      I'm half way through Eureka 7, and the one thing I can't stand is Holland physically abusing Renton, it just makes me mad. I like everything else for the most part, though.

    Eureka Seven has been my favorite series since summer 2008, although the way I enjoy it now is much different than the way I did back then. Over time I began to notice that the writing, especially between Renton and Eureka, was pretty cheesy. But I still love the show's visual style, music, and attention to detail that you just don't see in other shows.
    Protip to new viewers: Episodes 4-8 are traditionally where people drop the show. I don't mind them, but they're definitely filler-esque. If you can make it through them, it's more or less smooth sailing through the rest of the show.

    About the Movie, tl;dr: worth solely because of the ending
    I know you just made a video about how constantly people tell you give a second chance to anime you droped,
    but to me this "franchising" is an important part of Eureka and I enjoy how the maga was totaly different from what I expected when I first opened it and how every Eureka "story" is a different universe (makes it easier to cope with how bad AO was)
    The Eureka movie was one of top 3 most emotionaly impactful anime I ever watched (the other 2 being the Eureka series and Toradora) and it was watching the first 25 episodes ripped on youtube that brought me into anime for real (cuz after 25 episodes the channel was banned and I had to discover streaming sites),
    and so I would recomend the movie solely because of the ending, every time I listen to the track for the final scene and the ending 'Space Rock' by iLL it's like my heart is being squeezed and I have to hold back a tear or at least showers me in goosebumps

    I've recently finally started to go trough with my old resolution to rewatch old shows that I either remember being amazing or heard of being such. And with that I've gone trough Trigun, one of my top 3 of all time and... it definitelly aged at places, there are a few weak episodes that I repressed from memory (most of them have the common trait of too litlle Vash in them) and some of the moments didn't hit me as much as they did before, but with all that I've found a few new scenes that hit me like a brick wall (especially certain characater's death) and the animation at times is outstanding considering its age (it has an exeptional first episode). So overall I still consider this one of my all time favourites, tho for slightly different reasons so you dac definitelly relive those old series and not be left with a bad after taste.
    Also right now I'm watching Fooly Cooly, never seen it before and the animation and style are mind blowing and the story is really fun to follow, so there's also the added benefit of giving people a chance to find out about series that they haven't seen/know of for one reason or another.

    Eureka 7 has been my favorite anime since I first saw an episode of it on adultswim one night when I was like 11. I really hope you are able to go back to it and enjoy those things you liked about it at first and even find something new. There are some aspects of it I think are deserving of critisism, mostly in regards to exposition on the plot. But those don't effect enough episodes to really damage the show I think. I would really love to see you make content about it, even if I might disagree with it for whatever reason.

    Hey, Digi, I love your videos. I have a question about your mindset about your career. In many of your videos, this one in particular, you state that you take things that you experienced in the past and are now applying them to your career in various ways, such as creating a series of videos about old anime you were interested in at one time. In this video you said that you now approach buying things, at least partly, in a way that benefits and promotes your career, instead of going just off of aesthetics as you did when you were younger.
    Do you think that there is some level of conditioning that you are putting yourself through to make your career as successful as possible? Is a lot of your thought time dedicated to thinking about how to advance your career and do you think you have conditioned yourself to think in a way that instinctively considers possible benefits that an action may have on your career? And if there is conscious conditioning going on do you think it has changed your aesthetics and outlook on life?
    Thanks, I'd love to hear your thoughts.

    LATE COMMENT ATTACK!
    I always find art books probably the most worthwhile investment: That and model kits.
    But that's because I can drop £50-£100 and get a weeks of entertainment out of it. As for art books, that's because Art is my passion, looking through them and getting inspired to try something in a style I've never done before and seeing the creative process is endlessly entertaining for me.
    Although true story: I picked up several Bishoujo statues of Nono from DieBuster because a local clearance store was selling them for £5 a piece.

    I've had this feeling with buying stuff many times. When you have enough money you buy stuff that seems appealing at the time, for me it's mostly clothing at the moment. And it can get expensive, I don't buy cheap stuff.
    And when I am low on money and look at what I have, and I see I bought that expensive shirt or whatever and think "Is this really worth what I paid for?", the answer in my mind is usually no. But somehow I still fall back on it after some time.
    Not into figurines though, they do nothing for me lol.
