  • A lot of people are confused about the new Boogiepop anime that is currently airing. So I decided to make a video briefly explaining most of the Boogiepop Media that has been released and answering that fabled question: "Do I have to watch the old Boogiepop Phantom anime?"

Boogiepop phantom was a very interesting series. Even though it probably isn't canon,, I would still highly recommend it.

Why you should watch Boogiepop and Others (2019)?
    That's an easy question...
*"Can you see the meaning inside yourself?"*
*"Can you see the meaning in your darkness?"*

Original Boogie Pop Phantom is an extremely surreal. A work that is defined in a genre entirely of its own. I have the Madhouse version. It's epic! Who is the duality of Boogie Pop? The beauty of the episodic series ( Boogie Pop Phantom) is that you have a mysterious story that isn't linear but dives into several questions slowly addressed or revealed i.e. who is Boogie Pop? Its well made bc the essence of the story itself was a driving factor in that all the characters seemingly sometimes important to the plot or not end of up being all true fixtures in understanding who Boogie Pop truly is. In the beginning many question who existence at all while others become in direct contact with her which is inevitable that she is a hero who is taking out the trash, if you will.
As in real life victims often become dangerous and are threats to others as they dive into their unfortunate traumas. Be it the manticore or stealing the painful memories of those by eating the spiders he is unable to resist. Boogie Pop shows him that he infact, has more spiders on himself and its his downfall getting exponentially worse. Meanwhile Rei's stalker, Saotame and many others are also once very human people that have been triggered in one way or another in this vicious world all surrounded by the TOMA company with its own evil agenda.
An extremely complex and irresistible anme. It will always sit at one of my top 5.
With characters like NagI Kirima and Toga at the very end casually meet and are talking, when they too had some secrets of their own obviously shared between them at some point. Another leap in BP's abilities not to be a linear story but one in which the viewer must watch closely. If and when you do, the writer's give us a compliment by nodding that we too are capable of knowing exactly what happened in the strange days following the piercing light that ran from the earth into the heavens.

Also I got around to watching Boogiepop Phantom despite not making a review of it, so I thought I’d share my thoughts here:
It owned so hard. It perfectly captured the feel of the novels and had the balls to use the format of the novels despite it being an anime, which-surprise-ended up working. Big time. It’s officially sanctioned fanfiction (non-derogatory) in the best way possible. If you like it, read the novels. It still kinda surprises me that it’s such a classic for anime-onlies because I feel like I wouldn’t have understood anything without the first novel. Some of its horror is straight up focused on twisting your knowledge of Book 1 into an uncomfortable shape, so I can’t imagine how that would hit without that knowledge.

The most confusing anime I've ever watched. I only understood some of the concepts and plotlines. I get that there's Boogiepop, a phantom hero that fights the monster in the shadows and has encounters with other superhumans and then later on aliens. Then the aliens having their own plot against humanity or something like that. The weirdest part was the whole chimera thing and the doctor who could see into people's hearts.

When I was like, 12, I had just learned anime was a thing. Probably the beginning of my chuuni phase. I happened across boogiepop phantom. No subs. I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at. There were no giant monsters or obvious tropes to give me context, just these strange anime characters walking around in a greenwash color pallet. I didn't even realize it wasn't just green white and black until I saw some of it again. Really left an impression on me, and I didn't even get any of the story--or see boogiepop.

It honestly feels so disrespectful that seven seas would drop boogiepop a second time. They gave everybody false hope by reprinting the old volumes and now they have chosen to completely ignore it again. They haven't even licensed the two new manga that came out in 2019.

NOTICE: I keep getting people talking about how Boogiepop Phantom is better than 2019 and yeah that's a very valid opinion. I've also heard that 2019 absolutely plummeted as an adaptation (though I have yet to watch it and still plan to at some point). But this video was made the day the first episode of 2019 came out and at the time things didn't look so dire. Phantom being really good is a common consensus opinion despite it being non-canon to the main series. Take it as you will and decide on your own whether you want to watch it or not. It is also getting a blu-ray release by Nozomi Entertainment, which wasn't announced at the time of this video. If you want to watch it, I highly suggest supporting the official release.
For those of you wanting Why You Should Read Boogiepop, I do not start production on episodes of specific series unless one of the two criteria is fulfilled:
    1) I have read three full volumes of the series
    2) I just know so much about the series from other sources that I feel able to accurately give a feel for how the series is for the most part.
Because of how Boogiepop is, I feel unequipped to allow the second scenario to happen. Despite knowing the history of Boogiepop media, at the time of this video I had not finished a single book.
I read Boogiepop and Others. I have a review script. I just have to record it... then edit it... find music... etc... and before that I have to finish my current video which is already way behind schedule, which will be apparent by some of the things I say in the video. I plan to review the entire Boogiepop novel series because of the support. Thank you for showing interest.
(And if you could check out Kokoro Connect, whether it be through my videos or by just diving into the official release on digital storefronts, that would be highly appreciated. Please follow me on twitter @/maturepurple for far more frequent updates)

Plummeted certainly isn't right since it actually got better as it went on. It started doing 3episodes per book which was pretty rushed, the second half of the 18 episodes is dedicated to just two books though so it turned way more solid.

Its interesting(That is to say, infuriating) to look in on situations like this, where I see people getting really heated about what looks to me like a decent show. Its not like the recent berzerk anime, which was worse than nothing.

I may come back someday, but I can’t tell you when or with what.
Today I logged into this account for the first time in literally two years. I opened my watch history to find I had not watched anything on this account since 2018, back when I graduated high school.
A few months ago, I graduated from university summa cum laude. It’s felt like an eternity, and it may as well have been-given the speed at which everything moves these days.
One last thing! - The latest video on the channel is just a rant I made a while back. I know it made some people mad but I stick by what I said. When I first posted it, I ended up privating it because I was afraid the like-dislike ratio would ruin me (lol) but my best friend liked the video so my last act before leaving to focus on school was to make it public again.

Boogiepop and Others 2019 is one of the worst adaptations of all time. Vol 1-3 are all adapted within only 3 episodes each and the show´s budget is non-existent. The updated setting that ended up making tech wizard Nagi pointless and the characterization/plot changes + censorship are the cherries on top. Who knows what went wrong at Madhouse but they whiffed it bad. 4/10
