    I'm with Digi on this one. Boogiepop and Others is probably my favorite book ever and it was super influential on me. The problem is Boogiepop isnt an action story. It's a psychological one. Speeding through the story severely lessens the impact of just about every event that happens.
    Also cutting Kimura is a damn tragedy. The point of his chapter was to show how loving and empathic Naoko was. And that she could sense Tanaka was meant for great things the same way she could sense Echoes' feelings. I've never seen a character like Naoko before. I love that she basically dating 2 guys for totally different reasons but it wasnt exactly cheating. She was just full of love.
    I've been expecting and hoping for another Boogiepop anime ever since Haruhi and more so SAO really popularized the light novel adaptation. But it never occurred to me that like SAO or Danmachi they would for some reason feel the need to just fly through everything. Look at this this way: Haruhi took 6 episodes to get through the first novel (and a nearly 3 hour movie to get through book 4) while Boogiepop is taking 3 episodes, or 60 minutes. Even the live action Boogiepop and Others movie while wasnt great, was still far more respectful to the source material. Haruhi as an example was so well paced and it's a shame they went for "as much content as possible" vs quality here.
    On another note the sameface is awful. My girlfriend literally can't tell characters apart since she hasn't read the books which makes a chronologically out of order anime even harder to follow.
    Personally I would've devoted at least an episode to each character's viewpoint.
    I absolutely adore Boogiepop as a franchise so at the very least at least it's getting more recognition now overseas. I'm so glad Seven Seas finally translated books 4 and 5 with the possibility open for more. Maybe we'll actually get fan translations which I've been desperate for for the last 10 years after Seven Seas abandoned it.

      @@nyanko8411 I asked the Seven Seas editor in chief on animenewsnetwork if they'd be open to more if the new omnibuses sold well and he said yes. Ive never read the light novel but personally i felt that it was pushing some actions scenes and instead of adding dialogue they just added some action, Which would be fine if it wasnt a psychological thriller. I understand why they dont want to add too much dialogue because its might be harder for just anime fans to get into or understand, but without the extra dialogue it just felt vague and empty. While madhouse is a great studio, i feel like shaft could have handled it better since shaft have done more psychological and dialogue based works like monogatari and march comes in like a lion. But ive never read the LN so this is just my opinion in what ive seen so far

    Now understanding more about the book it makes sense why the anime feels like so much was left out. It felt more like a gimmick the way it was used and confused the shit out of me most of the time.

    I feel like we don't talk about sound design enough in anime, because that's what I remember the most when thinking about Boogiepop Phantom. Regardless of it being a proper adaptation it truly captures the essence and feel of books for me. While watching part of the first ep of the new series I can see them dipping their toes in that type of experimental atmosphere but not going all the way. Any sign of tension is lost with the bright garish colors used. I just wonder what the people of these productions are looking at and taking inspiration from....and if it's other anime right now- well I think that's where we have a problem.

  • @TJGibson0
    @TJGibson0 Před 5 lety +17

    Having not read the book or watch the anime yet, listening to how you describe the story (and the way it's told) makes me very intrigued.
    Maybe this wouldn't work for how it's actually structured but the way your describing it makes me think something like a 5 episode ONA would be the best way to adapt this properly to anime, that way you can give each "narrator" there own episode and make them as long (or short) as they need to be to tell the full story.
    Of course this way would likely be less profitable but would probably (as someone who hasn't read or watched it) make it the best adaptation possible.

After watching the first 2 episodes I really wanted to believe that it was fine, and that it would go on to be a good thing. But after watching this, I realized how much of an idiot I was for trying to contort my opinion of this to make it feel satisfying. I've read the first 6 novels at this point, and I'm going to re-start translating the 7th soon just because I want to read it so bad. I don't think I'll ever be more disappointed in something like this. Thanks for helping the series get a voice, we seriously need it. Buddy Waters (Andrew Cunningham) has also been talking about it on Reddit and his twitter, so between you two I hope there ends up being enough awareness to keep this going.

  • @LeynaSept
    @LeynaSept Před 5 lety +18

    I agree with all your points. A big reason for me liking Boogiepop is the characters. The first chapter is my favorite, I really like Takeda. They just ruined his character. It's hard to describe, I just kinda related to Takeda with what he thought of Boogiepop. First as like a supernatural strange thing, but getting to know him, Boogiepop is actually a cool dude and friend. I generally felt sad for Boogiepop talking about himself how he can't be human and do human things. The friendship between Takeda and Boogiepop was true, I felt so sad when Boogiepop left.
    Yeah, this would've done better without the anime and instead long OVAs. But I took extremely interest in this series after watching the second PV of the anime, as well as watched your other Boogiepop video (kinda spoiled me because I didn't read the novel yet.)
    But one thing that's good, is how this anime might attract more people to the light novels like it did to me.
    They just cut out almost every single thoughts of the characters. But that's a necessary part of the book.

    Spitting facts:
    The fact people connect the quality of source material to an adaptation, and vice versa, is ridiculous.
    Boogiepop is a really good novel. Alright, cool. This does not in any way logically lead to the adaptation also being good. It doesn't even lead that the adaptation MIGHT be good - as there have been good movies or TV shows based of shit source material. No causation.
    The best you can say is that it SHOULD be good. But that is pointless, as everything SHOULD be good, but few things are.
    Every time, every fucking time high-tier weabs hype-up some property that's unknown in the west getting some trash tier anime adaptation, and casuals either eat it up or go "Wow, this is shit, I guess the source material is also shit", causing the source-material weabs to start making excuses for the adaptation instead of just shitting on it for being bad and making it clear that the original is still good.
    Idk but this song and dance gets so fucking old

    • @DariusVladimirAuditore
      @DariusVladimirAuditore Před 5 lety

      It's not like everyone is expecting the adaptation to be bad, besides the weebs who hold the source material as a bible. Sure just because the source material is good doesn't mean the adaptation will be good, but the fact that the possibility of a good adaptation is real (look at jojo and monogatari), then people will hope for it. Yeah, it's annoying to see when these weebs try to shove the idea that the source material is forever the best, but Digi here is passionate about Boogiepop so it's natural for him to critique the bad adaptation, and he doesn't do it in a toxic way.

    As someone who also read those first 3 light novels back 06 and 07 after being intrigued to know more about Boogiepop after watching Phantom on TechTV way back when, I get having a strong investment in the series. THAT said, I haven't reread them in over a decade and I always try to see an adaptation of something for just that, an adaptation. It'll never be one to one, for example, I don't think Kadono's musical references are necessary to the anime outside of Boogiepop humming the Overture, which is an odd omission. I trust the director and crew involved that what they're putting on the screen is intentional and they could take certain things they've omitted so far and apply them later (like Suema's history). My point is, I'd wait to be completely dismissive of the anime until after 6 or 7 episodes in and where they're at then, plus like you said in your following video, I just hope this is successful enough to get people interested in the series.

    Tbh, I get the feeling my favorite character is the one which Digi probably connects with least, especially since he almost doesn't mention her at all; the disciplinary council president Kei Niitoki. Mostly because I had a similar disposition as her, I usually found myself volunteering for stuff just because nobody else would and reluctantly went with the flow just as she does for a good portion of the book. But when all is said and done, she has a strong sense of right and wrong, and stands her ground even when the situation seems entirely hopeless near the end. While she isn't openly defiant of normalcy as the other characters, she has a strong will and Boogiepop even says that the world stays a halfway decent place because people like her.

    I just read the first book after having seen the first 2 episodes of the anime a year ago (which I remembered very little about until reading the book) and let me tell you: you were right. While I think bringing over a lot of the narration would have bogged down a visual adaptation, there are still a lot of dialogue or visual driven scenes from which the meaning of the narration could be inferred (yet almost none of them were adapted...). And even if the subtextual scenes go over some readers' heads, most of the characters eventually (and usually not too forcibly) state what their character arc is to catch all the readers up to speed. Dialogue like this is really easy to adapt and it's a great safety net for themes. This is a story where you're supposed to not know who the "main characters" are until the end. The anime, just by omitting the fourth chapter character's perspective (even if it isn't directly related to the events of the plot), sort of betrays this offbeat ethos that isn't afraid to mess with our minds a little, but not so much that most people wouldn't be able to get it if they tried. But hey, anime adaptations, amirite?
    Also, they really don't establish Boogiepie as masculine at all in the anime. From what little I remember, I just full stop thought he was a cute anime girl (pseudo trap?). Glad I could overwrite my memories with the novel, it's more interesting and has a lot of heart. Seven Seas really needs to proofread more though. There was a spelling error/kerning mistake/omitted word once every 30 pages. Gonna go read books 2 and 3 now, thanks again!

I should've watched this video before doing it, was just curious to understand a little bit of this Boogiepop thing that Digi talks so much about, but sadly the anime just let me down, and I didn't undestarstand almost nothing at all 'cause I couldn't pay enough attention so boring it was, but I do now intend to try reading the light novel in the future, watching you talk about it really made me feel interested, way better than the anime did.

Why cut those if you're just going to laze through the visuals anyways? If they kept all of that stuff they cut and changed nothing else at least people would be willing to give it a chance for the story! If there was more shading and different camera angles then maybe it could compete with the Monogatari talking scenes even with inferior character designs, buuuuuut based on what Digi said, who knows what the director was thinking when he read that whole page with the repeating phrase. Or why they are skipping out on the musical preferences of major characters, something that who never get from characters today. Its a lot more direct in terms of explaining themes and feelings. There are a lot of things that can be said in the book but only shown in the anime. I feel the demographic for this anime is people who read the book and wants to see it come to life. But yeah... it sucks that one of the narrators was cut out

    Now, I definitely understand where you're coming from on seeing something you cared about deeply as a teen being massacred in adaptation. For me, that was The Giver, a fantastic book (the first in a four part series that nobody seems to know about!) which was absolutely and heinously butchered in the process of turning it into a film.
    However, I have not read Boogiepop. Maybe I will at some point, but at the moment I'm going into this entirely blind, as I didn't even watch Boogiepop Phantom. I'll admit right away that I felt overhyped for this based on how much you've stumped for it over the years in comparison to what we've gotten so far; like you say, the pacing feels kind of slapdash, many designs feel generic or overly same-y, and I feel like the structure of how things are moving is missing something significant (probably a lot to do with the lack of narration and music references you comment upon).
    And yet, I'm still curious enough to keep going with this anime, at least for now. I have some faith in Shingo Natsume given his previous work, and there are still things that are keeping me going. I like the music so far, and there is promise of well-put animatic quality coming in the future. The thing that has me most worried at this point is Kirima Nagi; that shot of her wall-running against the building like it's the Matrix or some shit in the OP is exceptionally out of place to me, and I sincerely hope this doesn't just end up feeling like some very bog-standard fantasy procedural.

      You should be aware, however, that the book and film are QUITE different. The film is very much shifted to appear as similar as possible to a lot of the Young Adult fiction books which were being turned into films at the time like the Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Divergent. The original book version of the Giver is much closer to the slow, thoughtful sci-fi novels of decades earlier however, partially because it came out quite a long time ago itself (sometime in the 1990s, iirc). I strongly, STRONGLY recommend reading the book, and then following up with its 3 sequels, if you'd like to get something a little more complete and unique.
