People want to feel like it's okay to be themselves, and it sucks that we live in a world where people feel like it isn't. Disagreement makes a lot of people feel like they must be doing something wrong, which isn't a good feeling for most.
Even in this video, Digi stated that you must not know what you're talking about if you enjoyed Bunny Girl Senpai on the same level as Haruhi or Monogatari which feeds into that feeling of doing something wrong.

It almost gets into the whole “guilty pleasure” territory where people like things but are ashamed of admitting they do because they recognise it’s bad. There is no such thing as a “guilty pleasure”, there’s just insecurity in liking things because you recognise its flaws.
But you’re mostly right about people needing to learn to be themselves. I think a large portion of that comes down to people interpreting discussion as persuasion if their stance is well-articulated and confident. I think that charisma rubs people the wrong way in telling them that they know what they’re talking about and, as a result, makes your feelings invalid about a piece. It brings me back to why Digi even makes these videos in the first place. The whole idea of not wanting to persuade people but to present why someone may have felt this way about something, which can potentially nudge them into an idea or perspective they’re lacking, is interesting and in a lot of ways relatable to myself. I just think a lot of the newcomers misinterprete him a lot of the time.

Maybe there is an amusing meta-level here. That comment was mostly about why people might think the show is much better than it is. Digi makes is sound like he didn't read the rest and then angrily shouted about it in his followup. Right after complaining about people who misinterpret him because they stopped watching after the Bunny Senpai section.

It's even weirder because the reason anime as always seemed better than a lot of western stuff to me (even more so these days) is specificaly that they very clearly target audiences instead of constantly pursuing the ever elusive WIDER AUDIENCE. It's ok, even better, to target what you make for a certain demographic, it's my opinion that the only way to make something really great is to be very good at targeting what you make.
That's good and all, but in this case, the problem is that it's too niche to sustain itself and creatively, it feeds off of itself. Anime itself is already niche, so why try to make a profit off of a niche within a niche? It barely makes sense from a business perspective. The only reason it's practiced is that it stagnates the sales instead of potentially regressing them.
Also, like Digi said in the video, they're not even good at targeting what they make anymore. They just target the people who haven't jumped ship yet and the production values as well as creativity are regressing year after year. It just becomes more of the same but worse instead of better, but still for the same audience.
That can be a trap, though. Specializing too much. Too much anime is based on anime based on anime. Creative incest.

That's pretty much how I am too. I watch a couple anime CZcamsrs but Digi is my favorite even if I disagree with him on a lot of stuff. He just makes his points really well.

Fans don't know what they want therefore they're insecure about the shows they watch. Hearing bad things about something they've invested in makes them feel judged.
Fans that are emotionally invested, if they hear you disliking something, will feel like idiots for liking the show. IMO, that happens because they like anime on a completely emotional level. They don't know why they like what they like. Therefore when an opinion comes from a logical view point it messes them up. It messes them up because they're insecure whether or not what they liked was actually good.
In my case, you've had lots of negative criticism of shows that I have liked. And that didn't stop me from continuing to like most of them. But that's because I know what I want, and some of your criticisms of the show are things I don't care about.
So until people have fully sorted out what they like and don't like, perhaps on a spectrum rather than a dichotomy, you'll have angry people banging on your door DEMANDING you give them peace of mind. Since the cognitive dissonance of hearing a differing opinion is far too unbearable for them.

I don't think that's true. I think people just don't like their shows getting dunked on. An emotional response doesn't mean a lack of logic, you can have both coexist and still be upset about something.
@Vazazell You don't understand me. When I say "lack of logic", I mean that just because someone responds emotionally, doesn't mean their reasons for liking a show are only emotional. To me that's kind of silly. Some people are just inherently insecure about their own thoughts on things, no matter how logical or well thought out those opinions may be.
This is an eloquent summary. It's important to note, too, that this likely applies to all forms of media, and I'd go as far as to say that this sort of reaction is so common because _most_ media consumed by humanity is enjoyed on the "purely emotional" level you describe. Unless someone is particularly fascinated by a certain art form, they will not expend the time and effort required to think critically about the medium, and especially with something as pulpy as anime the fraction of people who will be dedicated enough to logically consider why they like or dislike a show compared to the total viewing population will be very small.
That's a quite long TLDR.

I enjoyed Bunny Girl Senpai but I am bothered when people try to put it above Haruhi or Bakemonogatari. I watched those shows when they came out, and they WERE groundbreaking!! It is very likely that with time Bunny Girl Senpai will be less talked about like Oregairu or even Haganai... Like I said I enjoyed Bunny Girl Senpai but it will not *stick* with me. These shows may not be forgotten by those who enjoyed them as their "firsts" but they're not on the same level of influence and that's what is so frustrating and why this video really resonated with me.

If anyone thinks Bunny Girl is better than any of the Monogatari entries...then they are on a completely different wavelength than me. Bunny Girl was, in my opinion, a well written and flowing story with interesting characters and dialogue. However, if you try to compare it to Monogatari, I just see it as Monogatari-lite in all aspects. It was a welcome treat but not some offering from the gods.

Why not? Why are they beholden to thinking something more famous is better? If we use that logic, then you can't say that Log Horizon is better than SAO, because way more people are talking about SAO than Log Horizon, plus it was way more important and popular when it came out.
Bottom line: think what you think. If you think something not as "groundbreaking" is better, then by all means, continue to think that and you aren't "in the wrong" for doing so.

People are afraid to hear criticism of their favorite shows because they are afraid that the criticism will somehow undermine their own values by appealing to more logical metrics of quality. Criticism of structural and technical quality is much harder to ignore than a criticism of fetishistic appeal because it feels like a more objective way of saying something sucks. It makes people question their own opinions to the point of devaluing their original desires in favor of following what they view as common sense. This is especially prominent coming from public figures with large followings, because regardless of the full opinions of the crowd it feels that your opinions are being persecuted by 400,000 people at once, rather than one. It's a sort of shaming into submission without intent.

Devilman crybaby is the perfect representation of this for me. There was a lot that i specifically resonated with really hard, more than other yuasa works, but the fact that it was clearly far less polished and way more flawed than his previous masterworks makes me so angry. Imagine if we got to experience DMCB but on the same tier of production quality as fucking ping pong the animation.

You were the only other person that addressed how you felt the overall production quality went down for anime because of the current state of the industry and it really mattered to me because I felt the same way and no one else was really talking about it. The quality inconsistencies also bother me the most.
I've always really appreciated how similar my taste is with Digi's so our opinions on things tend to align quite often and I really haven't found any other content creator quite like him when it comes to this. Seeing people say to not watch something if you know you'd hate it really makes me wonder if those people even watch you or understand how you approach things at all.
Seeing all these people rushing to the defense of Bunny Girl reminds me of when I was a teenager defending Oregairu from critics who called it pretentious edgy wish fulfillment. Makes me want to die from the second hand cringe.

The reason 65 anime are made per season isn’t because they’re not hoping to achieve large audiences with each anime, it’s because it’s a highly competitive market.
The authors of most anime write it in the hopes that it’ll reach as many people as possible, each and every one of those 65 anime is trying to get each and every anime viewer to watch their show instead of the other 64.
Fitting your taste only goes so far, the true reason to watch something is quality and the people making anime are aware of that on some level.
That being said though, it should be fine to say “This is not nearly as competitive as the rest of the anime so I’m going to disregard it as the trash it is”.

I'll give my two cents into the conversation. I love Bunny Girl Senpai. It’s probably one of my personal favorites. But I understand why some people wouldn’t like it. The animation isn't groundbreaking or interesting, Adolescence Syndrome isn't really explained and an obvious metaphor and plot device, the "scientific explanations" are pretty dumb, the humor isn't everyone's taste, the characters can be pretty boring sometimes and their problems petty and melodramatic. But with all that said I still can forgive the show and enjoy it for what it is. I like how sarcastic and snarky the characters are and found them relatable to my own sense of humor. Even though the main character is pretty disinterested in anything I could also somewhat relate to it seeing how I find life too mundane and repetitive to really give a shit about anything. And seeing how he has dealt with more bizarre cases of Adolescence's Syndrome bc of the "Hospitalization Incident" I can understand why he's not that surprised whenever it pops up. And he doesn't stay static as he would seem as he continues to try and help the other girls. Even though he may also find their problems petty he still tries to help them out and understand their dilemma as it's revealed later on that he is trying to return the same kind of sympathy he received from Shoko and just like her "live life everyday hoping he's slightly kinder". I can connect with the problems the characters go through being within the age range the show is aiming towards and dealing with issues similar to that of the characters which in turn have made me care about them enough to see how they overcome through their own personal struggles. And I can get over the fact that it's not exactly visually appealing, although admittedly I wish the character designs were more distinctive and believe that the show could've worked as a live-action adaptation but, of course, not many people watch j-dramas as much as anime. It's a shame that you and many others couldn't enjoy the show but that's perfectly fine. Besides some of these people have opened my eyes to their views of the show and see its flaws. I know that my opinion on the show will change as I grow older and mature but for now I can say that I wholeheartedly enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the movie.
No ones gonna be making another Serial experiments lain anytime soon anyway...

I think the anger or dislike of the content comes partly from a lack of direct conversation with the content. You can't have a conversation with a video, you can only be shouted at by a video. It builds up in the viewer a certain amount of angst or anger, and I think it often comes out in the form of an angry comment or dislike. In order to dispel the pent of feelings of the sort of _talking over_ of the video, like when you can't get a word in during an argument.

I completely understand what you mean, but its near-unrealistic of you to expect your audience to think or react this way. People come to hear you validate their opinions most of all. Perhaps they don't consciously click your videos with that expectation in mind, but when they hear you agree with their mindset, it feels good, and if your opinion is counter to theirs, it becomes insulting, because it seems alien that you wouldn't enjoy something that they felt such affection for, especially when its washed over with comments like 'Its just a worse Haruhi' Etc. It sounds elitist, it sounds contrarian for the sake of being contrarian. Your fanbase that has stuck with you for years does know and understand your views, but you will always have new fans or new viewers who won't understand you nor even have a healthy mindset. It must be frustrating for you, but you should get a grip on why people click your videos in the first place and expect them to have soured responses no matter how clearly you explain yourself. Personally speaking, I think a greater problem is that people view you as an 'Anime Reviewer/Critic, even though you're not. So when they listen to your raw unfiltered opinion, they react the same way as if they were listening to a review/retrospective of the show in question. This only causes the reaction to be worse, but is part of the problem with giving your first impressions of a show that literally just ended.

Ok you just struck my issue with the modern anime industry on the dot. It's turning into this mass produced amalgamation where I'm struggling to tell shows apart. There are standouts but everything is becoming homogeneous. I have been feeling this since 2017, there are good shows coming out I just haven't had the gusto to sift through the garbage to get to it. I'm pretty much just holding onto a few studios to bear the brunt of this storm.
The comments on the last video were pretty funny it's like everyone defending it heard that you hate it then wrote super long comments about nothing without even hearing the other 10 minutes talking about it
Honestly, this has really only been so prevalent when anime became mainstream. Back when anime fans were the outcasts, the default was that people didn't like anime and someone who did was a pleasant surprise. Now it's reversed.

I wasn't able to find much backlash in the comments for your views on Bunny Girl. What I did see was a lot of sniping at Mother's Basement, especially of the 'he's a shill or '''normie''' variety. I guess given the whole 'underground alternative' vibe going on, that was inevitable, but it's still kind of sad to see.
Whoever tries to compare Monogatari series with Bunny girl, probably hasn't watched any of the Gatari series besides few clips on youtube... it is insulting really.
I think people simply think the criticism you have on Bunny Girl Senpai is very superficial. I don't mind listening to criticism of the show I appreciate if the criticism is deep and insightful enough. The reason why you are perceived as a contrarian outside of your fans club has a lot to do with the quality of the criticism you make. But I guess you wouldn't be making money if you, by some miracle, became the Roger Ebert of anime. So I agree that economically it's wiser for you to stay focus on the middlebrow market you have.
On a side note, I hate anime now. Watched it for 15+ years. Can't enjoy any new shows anymore. I converted to manga somehow and been on that train for awhile. Imo I feel that newer shows are lazier and cheaper and don't capture my attention like they use to do. I am at the end of my anime lifespan I think unless something amazing comes around and shakes the entire foundation of the anime industry.. so since that isn't gonna happen. As the youngin's would say "oof".

Zachary Bentley Dive into the world of anime films and OVA. That’s what saved the medium for me. In a world where the average seasonal shows use the same sorts of low effort strategies to insure the ever flow of dosh, it’s a nice change of pace to look at the productions specifically crafted to be the artistic center peace of a team that want to get in as much quality with as much time as they can get. Every anime movie has a legitimate amount of palpable effort put into it even at least on a technical level if the story or themes are lacking. For all it’s flaws “Your Name” was still a passion project for Shinkai, and it shows. I just recently got around to watching “Tokyo Godfathers” for Christmas, and god damn if that wasn’t the most magical anime experience I’ve had a LONG while. Also check out anime that’s being produced by methods outside the norm of the industry, such as Netflix. Even if they can be hit or miss most have their own sort of edge or personality to them.
TLDR: seek anime that isn’t traditional produced.

As someone who is probably like most of the people subscribed to this specific channel, I disagree with you pretty often. Doesn't stop me from being a patreon and recommending your content a bunch (well, not a bunch. Most of my friends aren't into in-depth analysis and/or wouldn't be able to get past the more extreme qualities of your personality).
Just thought I'd comment in support cuz I hardly ever do, and just say as someone who loves the Monogatari series very deeply (really looking forward to you eventually actually finishing it btw) Bunny Girl feels like diet/watered down Bakemonogatari.
However, I still enjoyed it with that knowledge, and find I could probably use it as a gateway anime to get people to maybe try Monogatari. My more normie-leaning friends would never be able to get past the long, Japanese-reference filled dialog or lolicon elements of that show, but Bunny Girl is much more easy to digest and enjoy on a similar level. It is nowhere near as deep or interesting, but that still leaves plenty of room for decent content considering how high Monogatari sets that bar.
This isn't a counterpoint as much as giving a kind of middle ground opinion since I have nowhere else to really express it, and maybe start some conversation on the value of using low commitment shows to get people into better ones.

Anyways, it's a fairly common reaction to be annoyed when someone doesn't like what you like. Now I think where the problem lies here is that you continually hate what most of the anime community loves, which is fine, but it builds up frustration for the people who watch your vids hoping you like what they like, they want their opinion to be mirrored in you.
Lastly, fellow grown man here (22 years old, have personally had a beard since i was 16), I actually really loved Bunny Girl Senpai despite thinking ep 1 was lackluster. (First time that's happened for me) and this is coming from someone who hates Monogatari and OreGairu, the 2 shows this show is compared to most. I guess I can understand being past the teenage shit, but for me they are just purely fun and entertaining, I don't need media to relate to my current situation in life (I mean general relationship stuff or anxiety, which is prevalent in teen anime is still a thing as an adult).
My favorite anime are easily Maison Ikkoku, Touch, Space Dandy s2 and Concrete Revolutio. The only one I related to heavily and felt like it was dealing with issues I currently face is Maison Ikkoku, which is what propelled it to my favorite of all time, but what made it consistently enjoyable was its fun character interaction and romantic/character progression.

I needed this video. I deal with a friend that can't handle when I critize something that he likes. He told me "every anime I've seen is good, if I haven't seen it it's not good". If I don't like something he likes, it usually gets turned into that I have high standards or I have shit taste. I find that crazy coming from someone who things SAO is a borderline masterpiece.

Hey Digi, could you talk about Nana some time? I think the writing in that is fantastic compared to a lot of other shows. Deals with a lot more adult (or struggling to be adult) themes. And it's not set in a High School which is cool. Would be interested to know what you think of it one way or the other.
Want I personally want for the anime industry is simply a site like steam where you can buy the show digitally, however it has to be good, meaning you should be able to download episodes and do whatever you want with them, the video has to be in a great quality, no censorship whatsoever and of course multiple subtitle tracks and it wouldn't hurt with a add automatically to myanimelist option or something. I would be willing to spend 10 to 20 euro for a 12 episodes show i liked, especially with the knowledge that the money would ACTUALLY go to the studios and be used on the kind of anime I want.
You could even make a twitter like function to such a site where you would be able to follow your favorite studios or creators, which would allow the studios to really make what the paying fans wanted.
But likewise, it's also okay to disagree with your point of view. If you weren't a hypocrite you'd realize this.

Oh man, I relate to this too much right now. Got to sit in at the Rising of the Shield Hero premiere at Anime Weekend Atlanta back in September. I posted about how I felt that it was painfully generic garbage and that post *BLEW UP* I got more dislikes and angry comments than every other video I've ever made combined. Some people even threatening straight up harassment in a few cases. I just sat there asking myself just as you did: "Why are there this many people this mad at someone who has a different opinion about a fucking anime?" I will never understand how some people take even the smallest slight against a show they like as some sort of personal attack.
It's the thought that if someone else doesn't like something you like, maybe they have good reasons for that, and knowing their reasons may "ruin" the show for you. Not only that, but admitting to yourself that someone else made good points about something is the same as admitting that you were not smart/observant/knowledgeable enough to realize it yourself.
And the other way around, thinking someone made bad points as to why they dislike something you like, is about misrepresenting something you like (sometimes true, sometimes just felt).
Many people want to share what they like and others to join in on it with them, and have other people also like it. So someone else publicly announcing something to be bad/not to their liking is directly opposing that.

Except it was easily one of the better selling shows of the fall season, Gridman and Zombie Land Saga being the only ones ahead of it, and the source material had the biggest sales boost of the season, so clearly it was more of a hit than most anime of 2018.

I don't agree with your point that there's less money in the industry right now. In fact, it's the opposite. The reason why there's 50+ shows made every season is that everyone is dumping money in the industry right now. Companies who want to make anime to promote their gacha game, companies who want to make anime to promote their Light Novels / manga, streaming companies (domestic, Chinese and International) pour money to get as many shows as they can to their platform, etc. The reason why everything is being rushed is that there isn't enough people working in the industry to satisfy all those demand.
I always find the most value in a reviewer that has strong likes and dislikes who can clearly articulate why they did or didn't enjoy a certain thing. Always helps you see a work in a new way whether you agreed with their conclusion or not.

subjectivity is subjectivity, all art is subjective, someone could write a 800 page essay about how SAO is a masterpiece and it would be completely valid if he truly could analyse it and your opinion would be valid as well, because art is whatever the fuck you make out of it.

The first step to learning to enjoy Anime is to not watch shows the Anime community is enjoying. Their taste is often shit. Wouldn't show 90% of the shit that airs each season to anyone over the age of 19.

You make great points, but don't always practice what you preach. It is far easier said than done. We feel strongly about our beliefs, and have built a culture around defending them against others (see sports, politics, etc.) If someone tells me they hate pineapple on pizza, I have a primal urge to say they have shit taste, and I probably will do that. Yet, no amount of arguing will make pineapple taste good for them; it is a fruitless, illogical endeavor on my part and yet I and most other human beings feel compelled to argue about it anyways. So while I do think the view expressed in this video is correct and self-evident, I don't think you can sit on a high horse regarding it. When you mock or dismiss others for their tastes, no matter how "obviously wrong" they are, as you do sometimes, you too are on the level of an annoying CZcams comment. I don't fault you for that, though it is better to avoid it, I mainly seek to point out that these commenters aren't necessarily doing anything you don't also do on occasion.
On a side note, I think most people who didn't understand why you don't like Bunnygirl would agree that Haruhi is technically more impressive, even though many would not say it is better. It's the fetish that makes them love Bunnygirl, and it's the failure to recognize other's as lacking that fetish that leads to obnoxious comments. For you it is sometimes the opposite: You lack a certain fetish that the mainstream shares, but may treat them as foolish for having it. I am not sure what compels people to watch SAO, but whatever it is, I respect that. The problem is not disliking it. It is telling people that you can't take them seriously if they put it on the same level as haruhi. Subjectivism has its limits when you look down on people that don't share your opinion which is ironically what you are doing and what they did with your opinion.
I liked haruhi but and recognize its influence but I wouldn't put it in a pedestal. There is a lot of people that would put SAO in a pedestal before Log horizon. They could even argue that SAO was "groundbreaking" somehow.
I hated haruhi's 2D character tropes even when they were disguised as lampshaded self aware tropes. Because they were there. I hated the endless eight and the fact that the author is in only for the money and won't write anything else because no publisher wants him to. I loved bunny girl because of the rushed pacing that you are mentioning. I'm also an adult that already lived what they live and I find the solutions and dialog that they provide unique in comparison the the cliched Japanese answers to teen angst.
You are always biased towards animes that are "niche popular" if something is praised on the quasi-undergroung fanbase is really likely that you are going to hate it (shin sekai iori, oregairu) its obvious that you are a 3x3 elitist poster and can't get the people's hype and opinions out of your head while you are watching something for the first time. Honestly it's not even mad, it just makes me feel bad for the person that they didn't like something. Like other people like it and I just want everyone to enjoy it to the fullest they can. That's why I feel bad for very critical people, I get that there are still things they like but the fact that they dislike so much is pretty sad.

I saw great value in your criticism, and you presented it well enough I basically agreed with a fair lot of it. I don't understand either. It was a sequel pretty close to heart to me and yet I still loved the criticism.

Well I can see this video become a stepping stone for a longer video based on this such as differing opinions of the minority vs majority on Digi's main channel.
A huge amount of these people are teenagers, as you stated, meaning their opinions and views are extremely frail and easily influenced. Meaning that when they hear contradicting opinions, their first instinct is to do whatever they can to reject said opinion, and (regardless of whether you’re a teenager or a child or an adult, this applies) most people do not consider their actions beyond just doing whatever their first instinct tells them to.

I've seen all the shows you cite as counter-points and I think a likely divide that you might be missing is writing quality. I completely disliked the authors previous outing (Just because was it?) but Bunny Girl Senpai has very dense and concise writing. It does in a third to a quarter of the time, competently what other shows drag their feet and take ages to accomplish - by design. (Filler). I think the divide might be who prioritizes what as most important. I hold writing and plot structure as most important, even over animation (Cross Game is functionally a power point colorized manga with voice over) - I couldn't stand VEG and I didn't much care for Haruhi - all mainly because the writing left a lot to be desired. To me if the story/writing and character development aren't there, then it's just a meaningless screensaver, no matter how slick the animation is. That said - it's a matter of peoples individual priorities I think. My only criticism of your video above is that I think you got too baited into caring what your detractors are stating. I disagree with Bunny Girl Senpai being bad but favorite people are the ones I regularly disagree with - it helps me form my own cohesive thoughts.
I think your position is valid enough. Sure, it's not quite satisfactory to hear someone to hate a show "just because", but there's plenty of stuff I like "just because". Often I find myself more fascinated with "bad" media or stuff that's just kinda short of being a masterpiece than things with high critical acclaim because those shortcomings could be the result of unconventional ambitions. I'm still trying to find an anime that makes me cringe in the same vein as a Michael Haneke movie because it's a feeling that I haven't quite experienced from the medium.

I think this point right here is significantly more important than I think people realize.
It is getting harder and harder for me to enjoy a lot of the seasonal anime that is out there just because I've out aged it. It's why I love a show like Wotakoi but hate shit like Haganai despite previously enjoying it. I just can't bring myself to watch yet another High School bullshit show where so many people are commenting "it's just like me!" and I'm sitting there going "Yeah, that was me nearly a decade ago and now I can see how everyone's problems could be solved by just not being a shitty teenager!".

I liked the interactions between bunny girl and MC, but that was about it, the rest seemed a little meh. Although the show was originally described from a friend to me as “just like bakemonogatari”, and as a monogatari fan I was a little disappointed from the show’s direction because of that. Just my own gripes, I guess I was just expecting it to be more like monogatari in terms of its depth, i just felt it was more shallow, not to say that’s always a bad thing.
