    A bit reductive but nice. You forgot the ability of art to help us come to terms with the nature of our own existence. Self acceptance and social congruence are just two of the multi faceted perspective of artistic expression. fundamentally you have the meaning and nature of the self, the meaning and nature of community and the meaning and nature of reality. Additionally you have the interactions of these concepts, for example; what is the self in the context of community, what is community in the context of the self, what is the community in the context of reality etc etc. Overall there are 15 distinct perspective a piece of art can take not just the two (or possibly three) you mention.

    • @afabian2
      @afabian2 Před 6 lety +5

      Yeah, agreed. It took me about half a second to have knee-jerk reaction of, "uh, no, I think we have art about more things than that" and another second or two to think of a few examples. So, I like the video, as far as it goes, but quite incomplete and starting off with an obviously faulty premise didn't really get me off to a good start with this one.

    I want an Isekai that isn't just escapism, where the neet protagonist doesnt just use his godlike abilities, but actually learns something about people and society that carry over into the real world, and it ends with him waking up in a hospital or some shit, having realized that society is worth living in and that he can be worth something to people. I think the purpose of art (at least, _narrative_ art) is to reason out conflicts, show why they happen, and resolve them in ways that make them better understood. It just so happens that society is an ENORMOUS source of conflict in people's lives; in this way, I can see the point of this video applying! But I think it's reductive to imply there haven't been narratives about simply _overcoming nature,_ for instance.

    Good discussion overall, and I'm glad you're talking about this. However, I do think it's over-simplifying to say that all art is about relationship to self and society. Storytelling and painting are older than civilization, after all. There's also relationship to the universe at large, and/or the divine. Daisuke Igurashi's excellent manga "Children of the Sea" is a great example. In fact... I think you could also include "society" as part of the larger universe. Some art is completely abstract, and is more about communicating emotion than any logical message (although I suppose that could qualify as relationship to the self). Then you've got post-modernist works, which are all about portraying society and the self as meaningless constructs, and... I also think people were complex to begin with. I mean, we were definitely thinking about our relationship to each other and the world pre-civilization. Oh, and one interesting thing - one theory about why we developed society? Alcohol. Basically, we settled when we realized we could grow crops to make it. I don't know if I go along with that, but... it's interesting.

    This unique way of analyzing the core messages of anime is what drove me to click the subscribe button on this channel. That's your uniqueness. You don't review what is popular just for the views, you give your honest opinion on what makes you like or dislike and anime or manga, while deconstructing its message, being it either conveyed by plot, visuals, characters, whatever. I've found countless great animes from your channel that I would never hear about just looking across the web for what was the most popular at the moment. Many times I also ended up not liking some of your suggestions, but I could at least understand through your reviews why you had liked them, and those reviews were always entertaining to watch regardless.

    18:49 No, you're right about language too. The human psyche is, as you say, far too complex to be boiled down into a set of words - even hundreds of thousands - and as such miscommunication is inherent to being. No one will ever *truly* be able to "cut to the heart of the matter" when communicating with others. Wittgenstein has written some really interesting stuff about this.

    • @gallowglass719
      @gallowglass719 Před 6 lety

      +ttechuv Musical languages are largely constructed and no one uses them, unless you're referring to tonal languages. Cinematic language is a descriptive term which boils down to how the filmmaker communicates his or her message to the viewer - it has less to do with language and more to do with the overall presentation of a film, though. I think it's safe to say Digi's referring to language in general terms in this instance.

    Use of a meta lens focused on the question of why results in most stories being about us just trying to understand and how we get by while on the ride. Its an interesting prospective even if a bit reductive to keep the video a sane length. The first ghost in the shell manga's ending conversation with the puppetmaster was that work that gave me the sense of 'the world of other people and my place in it.' and watching hideo kojima use MGS2's story and marketing to actively troll his audience to teach them a lesson about information control taught me about how an artists real voice is their differences from other artists and those differences can often be misinterpreted as flaws. Being said that i want to add, even if i look like an idiot, that even if at the core of art lays it's relationship with the human experience the reality is that said experience, as well as the enviroment where it's partaken, is so infinitely complex that maybe no amount of art will be enough to comunicate everything, and i'm glad for that even if it turns to be the cause of mediocre art to exist. That is also why I really absorbed warhammer 40k books. I mean the key concept is "space inquisition". It's so over the top, it inherently brings brings out caricatures of the explored concepts and makes them accessible through this very disconnected "absurd" point of view. There is sex and gore and hope and dreams. Fanatics and rationalists. Blind faith and sceptics that would burn worlds in doubt. I love it.

    There's a danger in thinking you can boil art down to a very simple thing because the simpler you get the more nuance you lose. Maybe you can categorize every piece of art in these two categories but at some point the it becomes meaningless. Basically this video was all over the place and I disagree with a bunch of it. Hey, maybe I didn't get it.

    • @Danilaschannel
      @Danilaschannel Před 6 lety

      Pretty sure the point was that since you can boil it down to very basic premises, it's of value to focus on the distinct ways it conveys those.

    • @Nayus
      @Nayus Před 6 lety +4

      Dandvadan bus. But that is equally as vague, and obvious! and digibro has to clarify in the description to finally get the thesis of the video out there. But even then he specifically talks about the fetish, the super specific parts, and diminishes everything that is more broad but maybe equally compelling to some people. He says ' why people like that basic shit?' when the answer is completely obvious and goes against the thesis.
      My problem with the video is that it takes too long and it sounds too complicated and 'intellectual' to convey the "deep and nuance" \s point that art deep down is a vehicle to understand ourselves but we still enjoy it because of the different ways it does it and the approaches and perspectives it has. Which is not something that needs much argument.
      Also have in mind that I've watched lot of his after dark videos, also long videos, also sort of rambl-y, but never until this one I got this problem. Always except for this one the point is easy to see and there's not much unnecessary complexity added to explaining the point and argument.

    One fundamental issue I had with this (cue long-windedness) is the starting premise that "We all basically want the same things". You arrive at this assumption by saying that if we strip away all the human elements we want to eat and fuck. And, well, yeah.
    But the interestingness in art often comes from the complexities that emerge when you take these other things into your art (see basically any well known piece of political art). It's odd because you kind of contradict yourself by, in several different ways, acknowledging these ideological differences... differentiate people (which means we aren't all the same except on the trivial level of personal survival).

      What I mean to suggest is that, if we think of ourselves as all the same at the baseline, then the fact that we diverge in any way is where fascination arises. I think that because people tend to think of us as fundamentally different, as opposed to--maybe not "superficially" but more, different because of society and its influence as opposed to at the baseline--it's harder to conceive of all art as basically trying to sate the same base need for people with different perspectives.

    I don't think Society and how we fit into it, is the largest category that all stories fit into, nor do I think it is always the best lens to examine a story by. Society seems more like a setting than anything else. You could have the same general story in different times and different places. Much like the movie Shaka Zulu is a Greek tragedy set in an African society.

    You made a great point, but there's already the concept of "The Hero's Journey" which shrinks all stories down if you're good at analyzing things. Jordan Peterson presents it rather well, but you can also read Joseph Kampbell's book or some Jung.

    In video games, the best players look at the problems in their gameplay, and try to consciously figure out how to deal with that problem and improve.
    Just like real life.

    I'm working on a set of stories where the very concepts of stories manifest as energy beings that grant power, and after seeing this video I'm thinking that I should probably just lean all the way into the dual thematic metaphor (story structure warps and hampers the reality of fictional universes vs. stories and the way we engage with them in a culture have tangible effects on our lives). I mean, I'm not going to get far pretending that vaguely lampshading characters' overpoweredness by an explanation that's really a tautology when you break it down _isn't_ my fetish.
