There's a bit of a question mark hanging over the head of the Land Rover Discovery, and it's there because one of its biggest competitors now comes from within. With the hugely impressive new Land Rover Defender offering so much to customers, does the brand really need a Discovery and a Defender in its range?
That's what Marcus Craft, AdventureGuide editor, has set out to establish in this review. Does the bigger Discovery 5 - in D300 spec, at just over a hundred grand - stand up against the Defender 110?
Does it have enough of a distinct personality? Is it more practical, luxurious and family friendly enough? And importantly, can it handle itself off road when it comes to serious 4x4 work? Crafty took it to his favourite 4WD track for this off-road review.

Three points: 1. You missed the big advantage, a payload about 40% higher than an LC300. 2. You can get aftermarket 18” rims. 3. Rear load space considerably bigger than the Defender

Interior space probably 40% superior to the Lc300 as well!

Yes it does have a bigger load space but sadly not as big as a Disco4 , my previous car. So I had to go to an Audi Q7. To be honest I would not buy a disco 5 as it looks too tall for the width and like a jelly mould. A bigger Defender is what should have been the discovery.

OWNED A "17 DISCO 5 HSE Si6 for 1.5 yrs, 60,000+ miles on it. I have modded it like a Trek Edition for extreme off-roading and it has easily handled everything I have thrown at it, with some minor nicks and bruises. My car has been reliable and I run LT285/55R20s Nitto Terra Grappler G2s on it, yes they rubbed slightly initially on the upper control arm, now have clearance except at extreme cornering. For me this is a great vehicle for what I what to do, a new Defender is not as spacious inside and not as comfortable IMHO. So it all comes down to what you want to do with your vehicle.

  • @tempestv8
    @tempestv8 Před 2 lety +8

Simple - if a 7-seater is required, this is the Defender to get. Otherwise, get a Defender. Especially if towing duties are required - the shorter rear overhang on the Defender makes it a bit more composed, as the tow hitch is much closer to the rear tyres than on the Discovery, which has more interior cargo space.

I’ve had multiple land rovers over the past 35 years of all shapes and sizes. Just about to trade my D4 for a D5 HSE. I have driven the new Defender and while it drives well, I simply can’t reconcile the exterior. They should have kept the essence of the original Defender and let the Discovery and Range Rover models do the heavy lifting luxury end of the market.

That's an unbelievable fuel consumption considering what the vehicle went through. And pretty unusual from a JLR diesel engine. Awesome results from that TT 3.0.

I have been a landrover owner for years and have had a very good run despite the negativety about which i can understand.thats ok Ill take the hits,
But about to update to another brand mainly due to the very very few service centres in Australia for these vehicles.Cost is not an issue for me service centre location definately.
My local Landrover service centre absolutely hates working on
them which is great for the confidence in Landies.

I don't think many SUV's can tow the line between luxury and off-road capability as well as the Discovery. I've got both the disco 3 with more than 400km's on the odometer (still going strong) and just ticked over 80k on the new 2017 Discovery. TBH, i'm still more at home with with the older Disco 3 (it seems more nimble and compact with superior visibility) but certainly less refined and much more thirsty. So conclusions... D3=post apocalyptic bug out vehicle now. D5=futuristic post apocalyptic bug out vehicle.

    Marcus,
IMO u were unfairly harsh regarding a few things.
    Warranty
5 years / unlimited km & Roadside Assist
    That’s excellent
BMW is still only a 3 year warranty
Audi only just went from 3 year to 5 year warranty as of January 1.
A BMW X5 is a more dynamic car on road, but useless off road.
Disco has huge off road capability, so the trade off is some on road dynamic ability.
The body roll is very predictable and well controlled.
    The Disco won’t tip over.
20” wheels are for show, and silly.
Better ride on road ride with 19” tyres.
If u go off road a lot, then of course someone would fit appropriate wheels and tyres.
    Visibility
    Besides having BSM and RCTA,
the excellent surround view camera has many on road and off road and towing modes
And the “ clear sight front view camera “ allows u to c through the bonnet, and down onto the road / terrain ahead.
The clear sight rear view mirror gives u a totally unobstructed view behind the vehicle.
U can’t ask for more then that.
    Disco or Defender
LR purposely pushed the Disco upmarket when Disco 5 was released.
    It competes against
    BMW X5 / X7
    Benz GLE / GLS
    Audi Q7
    Volvo XC90
Defender is the replacement of the previous Disco 3 and Disco 4.
If u want a more chunky looking vehicle, that can be optioned more then Disco for more off road capability, buy the Defender.
Defender and Disco makes the all new LC 300 look very ordinary
Row 3 room in LC is very tight, and unlike the LR product, u can’t slide the Row 2 seats forward and back.
Interior packaging of new LC is very poor.
Disco has plenty of room in Row 3
Defender 110 Row 3 room is ok
Defender 130 will have a lot of room in Row 3.
Row 2 seats in Disco & Defender can slide forward and back, which allows u to have a lot of flexibility with how u carry 6 passengers.
Not the same in new LC.
    LC 300 GXL is $ 110 k on road.
    Plus options and accessories
    No power tailgate !!
    No surround view camera !!
    No rain sensing wipers !!
No factory front or rear diff locks are available for it.
U must go aftermarket for that stuff…
Disco and Defender also have a lot more payload then the new LC 300.
U can load them up with more stuff, and the higher payload makes it much easier to tow over 3 tonne, and not be exceeding GVM or GCM.
LC 300 smaller payload means u r very easily exceeding GVM, once U r towing above 3 tonne, as u have to factor in the tow ball down weight, within the calculation of the LC GVM.

    • @jean-louishamid5285
      @jean-louishamid5285 Před 2 lety +1

You can even describe the Lc300's 3rd row as "hilarious". The Disco has the best 3rd row I've seen in any Australian Suv review.

V annoying as it’s normally parked under cover and I only found out when I left it out l!! Engine warning light £670! Needs sensor changing! This is internal to the matter sensor assembly and a new part is required

      Hi Chris,
I can’t find our recent previous comments here. 🤷🏻‍♂️
      This is an Australian site.
Obviously LR are hugely popular in the UK.
During its 3 year factory warranty, if u serviced ur D5 with a proper LR dealer, u will have a lot more luck with getting LR to pay for repairs if the vehicle is recently out of its warranty, as a Goodwill situation.
There would be info on UK forums if D5 has a windscreen leak problem.
If it does, go back to the dealer / LR with this info.
If it’s a known issue, LR should pay for this repair, as a goodwill gesture, as u r just out of warranty.
Even if u serviced ur D5 with non LR dealers, this should not stop LR paying to rectify a windscreen leak, IF it is indeed a known problem that affects some D5 ??
Regarding the check engine light and the replacement sensor.
Look up stuff about this on UK forums.
If it’s a known issue, LR should also pay this as a Goodwill gesture, but, might be harder to get them to pay this, IF your last 3 years of servicing was not with official LR dealers…
      Good luck…

I have the 2020 HSE disco sport so a few minor changes incl infotainment. One significant gripe is that I tend to always drive with android auto screen open but when you do this you cannot access features of the native landrover system, particularly park assist. Too many buttons and screens to traverse when you are getting close to a parking space. When you do get there, park assist works well though.

I feel like the new discovery, the new defender, and Range Rover Autobiography are pretty much the same things with a little bit more or less space, different body styling and identical underneath. All with less articulation and big wheels. No kidding the four-wheel drive system and suspension on all of them seems the exact same it's just really what body do you want to drive and that's pretty pathetic for such expensive vehicles. I don't get how such a classic off-road company can make things with such thin tires now. I've never owned a Jeep and probably won't just because it's so cliche but the simple basic stuff you see on a Rubicon with front and rear solid axles, front and rear Factory diff locks and front and rear electric sway bar disconnect all so simple so basic and so effective. My disco 2 is pretty modified and I love it. It is so capable with the tires aired down even if I just leave it on traction control no CDL but I have followed a stock Rubicon somewhere one time and the guy stopped and I asked him why and he said I'm putting it into 4x4 and I said wow this whole time you weren't he said no just rear locker and it was pretty pathetic because I was proud for keeping up thinking we were doing some hard level 7 rock crawling Trail and he was barely doing anything. It wasn't Awakening and if I could choose I would take a 2000's Defender 110 Truck Body and put it on a long wheelbase Rubicon with 6.4 Hemi.
