Volkswagen Touareg 2024 review: New R plug-in hybrid flagship headlines Lexus RX rival's facelift
The 2024 Volkswagen Touareg large SUV is an unusual position. Unlike other VW models, it doesn't exist within the mainstream segment, albeit the semi-premium end. Instead, it's a fully fledged premium player, going up against the likes of the Lexus RX, with the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz GLE a little further ahead on price.
Either way, the Touareg has its work cut out for it, so it's good timing, then, that the third-generation model's midlife facelift has finally arrived in Australia, where it introduces a new performance-focused R flagship. In fact, in a first for Volkswagen locally, the latest range-topper is a plug-in hybrid.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Deputy News Editor John Law attends the facelifted Touareg's national media launch to see how well its upgrades measure up, including the R's 3.0-litre turbo-petrol V6 engine and electric motor, which combine to produce a formidable 340kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

Tesla Model 3 2024 review: Performance EV tested! Half the price of BMW M3 and Mercedes-AMG C63 S
zhlédnutí 6KPřed 14 hodinami
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is redefining the performance car. For a touch over $80,000 plus on-road costs, the fully electric mid-size sedan is unlike any other before it, offering a 0-100km/h acceleration time of about three seconds. As such, it offers a turn of speed that's greater than the new BMW M3 Competition xDrive and Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance sedans, both of which are tw...
Better EV than BYD Atto 3? Hyundai Kona Electric 2024 review: Premium Extended Range | family test
zhlédnutí 1,8KPřed 2 hodinami
The 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric has stepped up its game with its second-generation model, which has brought a space-age exterior design to the fully electric small SUV. As such, it stands out from the crowd, which includes competitors like the BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV and Kia Niro EV. That said, the new Kona Electric brings a very familiar EV powertrain to the table. The single front-mounted electri...
GWM Cannon Alpha Hybrid 2024 review: Australia's first hybrid ute targets new Ford Ranger dual-cab
zhlédnutí 4,9KPřed 4 hodinami
The 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha Hybrid is here to shake up Australia's dual-cab ute segment, which hasn't seen a hybrid model until now. That's right; the Chinese newcomer has beaten next year's Ford Ranger PHEV to the proverbial punch when it comes to petrol-electric powertrains. While the Cannon Alpha is also available with a 135kW/480Nm 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, the main focus h...
Ford Everest Sport 2024 review: A new 7-seat 4WD for families who love turbo-diesel V6s?
zhlédnutí 18KPřed 7 hodinami
The 2024 Ford Everest continues to be a popular choice in Australia's 4WD wagon segment. In fact, if it wasn't for the large SUV and the Ranger ute it's based upon, Ford would sell very few cars Down Under. But it's no surprise the locally designed and engineered seven-seater has sold when since its current generation was released. Either way, there's still some intrigue, as the Everest range r...
Kia Sportage Hybrid 2024 review: New petrol-electric family SUV puts Toyota RAV4 Hybrid on notice!
zhlédnutí 18KPřed 12 hodinami
The 2024 Kia Sportage Hybrid is finally here. When it comes to petrol-electric mid-size SUVs, the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid has ruled the roost since its arrival in May 2019, with its delivery wait times since then often exceeding 12 months. Point being, it's boom time for petrol-electric family cars for five years now. That said, the Sportage Hybrid is arguably fashionably late, but that doesn't mean...
A real Tesla Model Y rival? Toyota bZ4X 2024 review: FWD | New electric SUV gets family tested
zhlédnutí 2,7KPřed 16 hodinami
The 2024 Toyota bZ4X is clearly expected to sell well by the Japanese brand, with its Australian marketing campaign built around fictitious owners who bought an example of the first-ever electric car "because it's a Toyota". Point being, the carmaker is betting big on buyers flocking to this EV due to the badge on its bonnet - but will they? The bZ4X certainly has a lot going for it, but that d...
Subaru Solterra 2024 review: AWD | A new electric car for the family?
zhlédnutí 3KPřed 21 hodinou
The 2024 Subaru Solterra may be late to the fully electric vehicle (EV) game, but it's looking to make a strong first impression, as evidenced by the Japanese brand's move to significantly reduce its Australia pricing before first deliveries even began. And frankly, it has to be competitive in the mid-size SUV segment, which takes no prisoners. A twin under the skin with the new Toyota bZ4X, th...

zhlédnutí 10KPřed dnem
The 2024 Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Max is here to shake up Australia's seven-seat SUV segment. While it might sound like a flagship Apple iPhone, this newcomer is actually a segment-straddler, with the popular Kia Sorento only about 100mm longer. Either way, China's latest challenger is hoping to steal family car sales away from the establishment. So, what does the Tiggo 8 Pro Max bring to the table? W...
Peugeot 408 hybrid 2024 review: GT PHEV | Is the odd combination of an SUV, coupe and sedan good?
zhlédnutí 5KPřed dnem
The 2024 Peugeot 408 is out to redefine what a mid-size car can be. Is it an SUV? A coupe? A sedan? Or perhaps all three? Who's to say, but this new French supermodel is certainly out to make an impression - which is exactly what it should be doing as the enduring Lion brand continues to struggle to find new buyers in Australia. Closely related to the similarly boundary-pushing Citroen C5 X, th...

The Verdict section: That's in front of Sydney Metro service building at Cheltenham oval 😂
Dude, are you serious? It forgot how to be fun? 😂 Haven't you heard anything about Track Mode? This car is without a doubt the best car on the market!
13K costlier than Tesla Model Y, but still worse than Model Y in almost all aspects! Hyundai really need to review the Kona Electric pricing.
17:02 - "we hit reasonably close" you make is sound like you consumed more than the std - you actually used less which would give you more range, you should have said - and we actually used a little less than the claimed consumption.
Good to see u back reviewing cars John Law
Don't care about the power but this new version in red looks really great.
The new Performance is an improvement over the last Performance model in many ways but not massively.. didn't you drive the initial release in 2018?.. its been the traffic light champ for awhile
Needs fun oversteer Track mode: am I joke to you?! And is not heavy. It is same weight as M3. Come on do research, dont just blob like what other reviewer says.
<I have about 5% of my portfolio in apple stock, any advice on any other stock that I can grow my $300k capital to a million dollars?
You should buy and hold tech stock Crypto investment
There are many interesting stocks in many industries that you might follow. You don't have to act on every forecast, so I'll suggest that you work with a financial advisor who can help you choose the best times to purchase and sell the shares or ETFs you want to acquire
You should know it's easy and hard to make that much profit. I say EASY because it's very possible to make that much, and Hard because you'll need professional assistance to do it, I'd suggest you get assisted by a market advisor.
I'm an advocate for having a diverse investment strategy. I grew to a 5 figure mark with my portfolio having exposure to different areas of the market, including small and large-caps of the ETF index, blue chip stocks, coins, grade bonds and alternatives like cryptocurrency markets, as this helps manage the overall risk on my portfolio managed by my FA.. Credits to my adviser, Jonathan, i have no doubt investing more
Please can you leave the info of your investment advisor here? I'm in dire need for one!!

Isn't this the guy who sang "Take on me" ?
Wow so you can’t move a small icon up and down with your finger and you mistakenly did an update when you wanted to use the car… wow first world problems right there. I mean are you serious about the drive selector? Also not everyone wants a big wing and carbon fibre everywhere and the look at me car. Some of us just like a sleeper car that under the skin is a serious sports car. Well done Tesla and will compete with any European so called sports car. 👍
Do Tesla influencers get paid?..or are they part of the company?. Fart noises rather than a HUD, a clip on sun blind rather than an integral auto blind. Bland minimalism ..coz that's the only way we can keep the price acceptable. _STILL_ noteworthy for what it doesn't have that it should. _STILL_ uninspirational for true car people. _STILL_ an appliance.
Each to their own - every day for over a year, every time I left the house I had the choice of a modified manual 300+hp Alfa Guilietta QV or my Model 3 sitting in my driveway as my choice of car to drive away in. I had to put entries in my diary to remember to turn over the Alfa and move it a little so avoid a dead battery and flatspotting the tyres.
Great review
Your review is a joke.
Are you stupid? The car has track mode. If you really like the sense of danger that you mentioned you can have it.
What about seeing NO spare tyre? It's a huge turn off for long rides.
Definitely my dream car right now! I’m stashing the dollars
Any reason why?
What a weak and disappointing review. Wow. Comments about lack of slip and slide, danger and fun lost me. Road safety?
With excessively high depreciation I'll have something slightly slower thanks.
Why would anyone buy a bloody Jeep Wrangler? They frigging ugly, and not a pick on the 4.7litre grunter that is the grand cherokee. I reckon if you’re gonna own a jeep, at least make it a grand cherokee - something with enough grunt to tow with, that’s comfortable to drive and doesn’t reek of “army surplus”!
Push forward for forward, nothing weird there 😂
For 99.9% of car drivers it will be weird.
@@intrusivethought 99.9% of car drivers can get used to not being weird
@@Tommmmmmmmmmmm except that it is. I’m sure it “works”, but pretending it’s totally normal at this point in time not having indicator stalks and gear shifter is loopy. Sorry.
I love Elon
I was blown away by the price and stats on this car but I'm still happy I went with the RWD for daily use and overall practicality.
"Dinosaur fossil fuel technology!!!" Yeah when the charging infrastructure in the country is still in Dinosaur era, having a bit of "Dinosaur fossil fuel technology" makes sense.

I tested a Tesla Model 3 a month ago, I had a radiation detector device in my hand and there was a high dose of radiation in the vehicle. These vehicles must be insulated with lead. Including my own hybrid Corolla vehicle, a high dose of radiation was detected after 60 km. I think this is a very dangerous sign of cancer for people..
I love it when people spread misinformation
@@yusufcanaktas6929sen kendi öyle avut dayı..
are you sure it wasn't a retardedness detecter?
@@yusufcanaktas6929 You think so, these vehicles are completely cancerous.
LOL - I think you've injested too much of the lead you want to insulate everything with - these have been tested endlessly - there is zero radiation above the background level in the cabin of the vehicle other than the small magnets holding the visors and the charging docks for the phones not even from the screen - and it dissipates to less than 1 milligauss within a couple of centimetres.
The car is 100% drivable during a software update. I have done it.
exactly, or just don't update it right before you need to drive it. that's like initialising an update on your phone right before you need to make a call lol
You can download the update to install it later but the car is unusable while the udpate is actually installing. I have done over a dozen updates.
I’m new to this channel but are you new to reviewing cars? You forgot a bunch of key things like track mode. I’d go as far as to say this entire review is null and void without track mode, since it addresses a ton of the things you complained about.
yep, especially when his main conclusion on the car was that it isn't "fun" yet didn't test the most fun feature of the car.
He is a lazy clown. Not willing to actually learn something about the car before the test drive. Absolutely clueless. Tesla should blackist him from ever getting a car to review.
Not enough! Just like in the S, Tesla needs to differentiate these more Like stepping from a BMW 330 to an M3. Hell I see more differentiation from a 330 to an M340 than this. I got an S Plaid and although it is a Rocket, I changed my daily to an Ioniq 5 N instead of a 3 Performance because of this. You can’t place the Model 3 Performance and the Ioniq 5 N in the same sentence the Ioniq 5 N got the “Special” vibe just right and is a hell of a fun ride.
Except a 330i is like 90k and a m3xdrive is 200k on the road. They are two different cars, they also cost 2 very different amounts.
And Ioniq 5 N is for people who can’t let go of the noisy ICE cars but want an EV. It’s a gimmick and will not interest all EV buyers. Plus the cost is ridiculous for what it is.
What’s your height? Should mention when you say “wouldn’t want to be too much taller than me”
Funny that the heads up display is still even a comment. The car reads the speed signs and adjusts cruise control. Its designed for full self driving to auto indicate and change into reverse by its self 🤯 But yes you can touch the wheel and give it the beans on track with traction control off and dial up 100% RWD. It can do it all except fake engine burbles on down shifts, it farts though... 😂
Criticism over the firm ride on 20’s is inaccurate as is your excuse that you expect that from a performance car. (Ever driven an M3? It’s outrageously stiffer!) I’ve driven this car and it’s far more supple than my 2022 M3LR. You also have a setting to make it softer. That you failed to even mention.
I just tested one before I ordered and it drives as smooth as a baby’s bum, I reckon even better then the new SR.
These reviewers complain that the car is a bit too good in the handling department, and want some fun... i.e lack of control. That would be 1% of drivers. They complain, but don't look at nor test the track mode, where you can reduce the stability control and traction control. I get the feeling they want something to complain about. The new M3P definitely has a rear wheel bias, but it never ceases to amaze me that it does not lose traction. There is now a big mismatch between front and rear motor power capability. I gave one a good test drive, and have one on order. Most of my cars get on the track at some stage. I'm more than happy to drive the car NOT in track mode, because on the street safety is paramount.
Makes you laugh, it’s almost too good 🤣 He obviously hasn’t heard of drift mode.
typical Aussie whinger
weak review. complaints about too much control without any use or mention of track mode. if you wanted to get the tail happy there’s ways of doing that with track mode.
I wonder how long it takes to get used to your instruments being in the middle of the dash rather than directly in your line of sight.
Super quick. I was surprised
Took me literally minutes from driving mine. There's no difference to looking at a centre screen to a dash behind the steering wheel. Not sure why this guy thought it was harder??
can we see the wheels without the aero covers? thanks
You forgot there is Track Mode that allows for the fun you said is missing. Test drove one recently and walked away very impressed with driving dynamics and performance; miles ahead of the competition is so many ways. This car has my vote for Sports Sedan of the Year and at under $48K in the U.S. with federal rebate, it's a complete no-brainer.
100% agree with your review. Boring car
yes i agree with you especially because it can drive itself. I rather drive please and thanks. Also Tom White is lying about it being boring. Look at his face 8:49
