I Bought A Cheap Land Rover LR4

- This 2016 Land Rover LR4 (~$30,000 CAD) is our newest addition to the Throttle House garage as a camera and crew car. We had very specific needs for a camera car, and the LR4 looks to be the solution to many challenges we face. However Land Rovers of the era aren’t necessarily known for their reliability, so we are hoping for a smooth and trouble-free ownership experience. Thomas and James are excited to share their thoughts on their latest purchase. How does the LR4 stack up as a luxury off-roader? And how is it to daily drive? We hope you enjoy the episode. And then subscribe, silly.

@@sajushtiwari No worries 🤣
It’s actually a very clever system, whenever the LR4 thinks you need more light in the cabin it ingeniously lights up the check engine light. Brilliant !
Now that there is funny. 😂
Hahahahahahhahaha
incredible feature
Actually, all the lights turn on.
@@jaycho6747they should've kept the lights turned on for majority of the cars.
Thank you for keeping the "get-in helmet section with the i8" in the intro. Pls don't evenr remove it. It is one of the signature(TM) moments of the TH!
was getting worried when i saw the new intro and was very happy to see they kept that in lmao
Agreed. Never fails to bring a smile to my face.
@@Flat_6the LR4 looks like Range Rover Bowler 2.0.
I wasn’t expecting it… so I got to laugh really hard again 😂🤣😂
Warning from a JLR tech, if you ever see that low coolant warning, DO NOT KEEP DRIVING. Have seen way too many of these engines cooked because the person kept driving. This engine overheats very quickly without coolant...
I love that the justification is pure car people speak. “It’s the most reliable year” “it’s got a fresh engine” “I’ve thought this through and it’s perfect for us” lol
The Land Rover LR4 surprisingly is very reliable car imo.
@@purwantiallan5089Truth. LR3 (more than the LR4) and LR4 are the more reliable cars Land Rover has made. Plenty above 200k miles with no major issues.
“If the queen pulled up in this, you would only be surprised because she’s no longer alive”😂😂😂
I like how Thomas' expression immediately says, "I'm glad you said it and not me!"
The Queen was more of a Defender fan.
Wait, is Camilla dead?
@@Jabber-ig3iwmany fans of Land Rover Defender still love this Defender for sure.

#1: Love the new intro! #2: Love the dealership callout #3: Love the prayer at the end!
I would rarther they call out the shady one who didn't honor the warrenty
Hopefully they kept the prayer at the end of videos in future Throttle House videos.
Man i really love that new intro ❤
I am glad they kept the helmet scene
Yup
@@Raznakremoving the helmet scene could be a bad idea.
This whole video is the reason i love Throttle House. Thomas buying a JLR suv on its second engine, James making fun of said purchase, the truck throwing up codes like they're gang signs in Cental L.A. in the 90s, the prayer at the end. Absolutely incredible content boys. Hats off to y'all
This was the funniest analogy I've ever read
Hahahah! 😅
May and Hammond said it best, "If you want to go into the wilderness, you buy a Land Rover. If you want to come back ALIVE, you buy a Land Cruiser." Thats more than enough convincing for me! Thanks chaps!!
IIRC that was Hammond during the Bolivia special?
And James in Cars of the People
Thanks for the corrections! I couldnt quite remeber which one of the trio said it
The irony in this is he still has his L322 Range Rover
I believe it's taken from an Australian saying. I first heard it in a Clarkson video he did in Australia.
The prayer at the end is why this is the superior Canadian car channel! 😂
I will argue that this is the superior CZcams car channel, regardless of nation of origin.

As an owner of a Land Rover Discovery 3, that ending was spot on and funny as hell 😂 But we love our Disco. It's a costly happy family dog 💚
What is it about Land Rover that you like?
@@Snk13_tyJLR have very good engineers who like to do their own thing, so they are very capable cars that drive incredibly well. The problem is that they rush everything out too quickly, without enough money to do it completely right, and their manufacturing department has issues with building things right, or suppliers seem to give them substandard parts and they don't check them because they must assume the supplier did it right first time.
*Thomas* : but I've been clever because this one is on a fresh engine.
*James* : that just means it's on its 2nd engine...which already has a CEL.
*Thomas* : 👀
I felt that.
The land rover prayer was very funny...James idea I bet

I just helped rebuild one of these engines. Basically the oil change drips oil on the plastic water pipes and the coolant pipe fails, which then takes out the water pump and then the heads. Don’t let a Barney change the oil and if you ever get a low coolant light, don’t drive it until you swap out that pipe under the supercharger. The tank behind the engine could leak as well but that wasn’t the case on those RR. Fair warning, M8s.
I recently purchased a 2012 LR4 HSE LUX with 149,000kms replaced the timing chains and just returned from a 12,000km road trip thru the US. Great road trip vehicle. I also own a 2010 Jaguar XF with 305,000 kms same engine. Timing chains replaced at 196,000 kms. Love driving both cars. Love your channel
The ending is so funny actually 😂👍 17:48
I once had a tire warranty claim denied because the approval procedure the repair facility followed applied to weekends and this repair was being done on a week day. True story.
The prayer at the end is the cherry on top as to why we love this channel
The ‘Land Rover’s Prayer’ should come in every JLR handbook; I shall be reciting every time I get into our (now out of warranty 😬) Velar.
Bless you gentlemen. 🙏🏻
I almost died choking on my breakfast hearing that prayer 😅
I spit my coffee💀😂
This has immediately climbed to the top of my list of favorite videos from your channel. Keep the Disco 4 content coming and the revenue will pay for engine #3.
I bought a used Pilot, drove it for 8 years with no major issues. Although the original battery only lasted for 11 years though. I used it to drive my friend to pick up/drop off his LR from the shop soooo many times, lol.
Exactly. 2013 EX-L owner here. Most reliable vehicle I've ever owned.
@@InfoSecTangSoomiss the old generation of Hondas. Nothing beats it
I'm so glad the helmet bump lives on. Such a great bit. Please never lose it.
I really do wonder how certain brands just can't get the basics right, it's like they're actively doing this. Every year they have a meeting going "so what do we need to do to make our cars more unreliable".
I think its planned so they can make continue to generate income from the repairs. If I owned one of these companies I would be embarrassed to have the worst reputation in the industry and would be on a mission to do a 180.
They think “They’ve been selling ok for decades, why change now? It would take effort to change.”
The main reason is that car manufacturers have to keep up with ecological standards and in order to do that, they have to make their engines more difficult in terms of engineering. For example, an old d4 from Toyota was using like 15l/100km and the new engine from jlr inline 4 2.0D has a fuel efficiency of 7L/100 Km. And it all comes down at a cost of reliability. I am pretty sure companies are not fond of having the "Unreliable car" company.
@@ML-jk3sz Exactly. That meeting is more like: "How stupid are our wealthy customers, are they still stupid enough to just keep coughing up whatever we ask, however often they need to pay our exorbitant repair bills even though we should've covered all of it under warranty?"
You can do that when your brand is just a status symbol. Most original buyers of these have it for two years and then move on to a new one.
Thomas really wanted one of these since he was looking at them for the ETH episode. Also, I seem to remember Top Gear using these as filming cars in the glory days of Clarkson, Hammond and May. Best of luck gents, you're gonna need it 😂
I bought a 2015 RRS LR494 SDV6 in 2022 March. Dropped the engine once to fix the leaks, changed the transfer case and 3 air suspension struts… but am loving everyday with it

Really glad this video dropped! I’ve been hemming and hawing about buying a ‘16 LR4 for a couple of years now, despite how increasingly long in the tooth they’re getting at this point. Great video!
Love how they channel some of the best from old Top Gear. All car fans need you guys!
The Land Rover prayer you guys came up with at the end should be a mandatory practice for every Land Rover owner anywhere in the world 💯🤣
I tip my cap. Fellow LR4 owner. Love the thing! I put some KM3 mud tires on it because the fuel economy was too good. 🤷🏻♂️
Advise! I have a RR l405 and my backup cam gets foggy too. Take a heat gun or hair dryer. The get condensation inside… heat it up a bit back there and it will get 100% better
Great video guys. Looking forward to all else this fine piece of British Engineering may surprise you with. 2 vehicles I often consider buying are either the Maserati Ghibli or the LR4 Lux. Both in every video and every owner I have spoken to seem doomed with never ending reliability problems. Really looking forward to see how this LR4 holds up. All the best . Keep the videos coming .
Fantastic episode! Especially after many years of Top Gear where they preferred JLR over any other car, here the guys mentioned the poor reliability etc. as well as the positive aspects.

This was Ultimate. Love you guys. Funny, and informative. PERFECTION
Amazing show! You’re getting better and better over time! Which unfortunately can’t be said about the Land Rovers…
After the video, I went directly outside to my garage and knelt by my W212 E Class and said a similar prayer. Good luck gentleman.
Lmao my family has a lemon W212 that somehow, despite having a transmission fault that no one can figure out, has gotten to about 205,000 miles. There is something seriously wrong with it has it vibrates every time you accelerate and shift gear, I pray it doesn't break everytime we drive it lmaoooo
I’ve not an SUV person, but I can see why people still buy older Rovers. They just look so nice and ride so well. I’m sure buyers think, this is amazing, and then decide to roll the dice, betting the worst won’t happen to them.
Anyway, congrats on the Rover, boys! Please keep us updated on how it goes short- and long-term!
I had an 05 lr3 and it was brilliant. Plows through snow and mud like a boss. I still miss it.

Ive owned a 2010 LR4 5.0 V8 for 6 years, replaced the Timing Chain guide rods and it's been running great and an amazing car for us. Taken if off road all over the country and has been super capable. how much do you spend a year to maintain it?
Nice fxd Thomas. You've got quite a collection. Great video.
As an Indian, I would like to have one humble request with regards to the lettering on the bonnet. If possible, would you be so kind as to interchange the first letter of each word and just casually use it? Pretty please.

I drive a 2012 Honda pilot touring with 240,930 miles. It starts every day. I also have been towing a box trailer across the USA 6 times. Blessed it never let me down. I love the Land Rover though, if I could afford one I would give one a shot.
Let's hear it for the 2nd Gen Pilot community here! Felt personally attacked. Our 2013 EX-L hasn't left us stranded. Ever.
Had a 2019 Passport and it was the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I had a Jeep in the 80’s. The Passport had issue after issue and was at the dealer pretty much monthly. Even when it was running it drove like a tug boat. Never again.
@@du3223A 2019 Passport is not a 2nd Generation Pilot. Two different platforms.
I wish I had this prayer 3 years ago when purchasing my wife's 2017 Range Rover HSE, at her request. My prayer was not as articulate, but just as fervent. Actually, ownership hasn't been too bad and my wife loves her Aintree green Rover with the same motor (though makes 380 hp in the HSE Big Rover). Happy wife, happy life.
Owned a SDV6 Discovery 4 here in the UK for 3 years and never once had an issue with it. Ironically, one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned! Was an absolute dream to drive, and really really miss it! Would buy another one in a heartbeat!
That prayer at the end was so relatable and perfect 👌
Had a Disco 4, it stranded us on a motorway due to a faulty fuel level sensor. It thought that the tank was empty. It was not. Fantastically expensive to fix.
Wonderful car to drive; comfortable, quiet, spacious and plush. But hard to resolve the constant knot in the stomach as you wait for the next thing to go wrong.....
The sensible choices are 3 row 4 runner with a rolled down back window, or a LX with a flip up tailgate. But how will we get entertainment if those are chosen (like the Pilot). Thumbs up for the excellent guilty pleasure of cars. While you are at it, please consider the V10 M5 as a daily :)
The sensible choice is to buy what you want if you can afford it. People need to quit compromising every facet of life.
You actually topped the support group featuring the RX7 with the closing prayer. Awesome
I bought an even older Land Rover Disco. I absolutely love it. It has had annoying problems but they don’t out weigh how enjoyable it is.
Top Gear used those as film cars for many years! Also- the 5.0 V8 didn't just have random timing chain failure, Land Rover was recommending 16,000 miles between oil changes when these were new, lots of owners that stay on top of maintenance are still going strong on original chains
But but but Toyota!!!!
I’ll be honest… I have a 2009 LR2 with ~149k miles…haven’t had one issue and have done regular maintenance on it. Changed brakes a while ago, flushed fluids, replaced shocks once. Love it. I also have a 2015 RR sport SE with ~89k miles, had one issue with a coolant hose which was made of plastic so did cost a lot to pull and replace the parts..otherwise it’s been a rockstar.. not sure I’ve ever met anyone who’s had issues with LR but I always see tons of comments about poor quality.. to each their own I guess
We got a new 2016 disco back in 2016 and the interior just started falling apart. And then the fuel pump self destructed and the car locked up on my mother in the middle of an intersection. We sold the car the next day 😂😂
@@brandonsenker8671 i get it.. weve all had some bad ones..or will eventually.. but for me and my house.. im buying Rovers
The LR2 is basically a Volvo with a Land-Rover developed AWD system. For sheer lack of pedigree and capability, it doesn't have the issues the larger Land Rover products do.
@@kyreerollerson im aware of what the LR2 is however it has the LR badge on it, so folks cant pick and choose their arguments and say "welll its not the same blah blah blah". All im saying is i have a large and a small.. both are superb for me. End of story
@@kyreerollerson kinda true, but I'd say is more of a Ford rather than a Volvo. Which is not very different since at the time Volvo was also owned by Ford. The AWD system also isn't fully made by LR, is mostly a Haldex controlled by LR software, which is a nice combination
I had the X3M but we were moving to a new house and I needed less debt. So I sold it and bought a 17 expedition XLT four-wheel drive cloth seats with 180,000 mi on it for 11 grand. I started with a full brake job rotors pads emergency brake pads and front calipers and lines as well as a new set of shocks and springs, did a lube service on all differentials and transfer case. It's now up to 210,000 mi, still on the original transmission original engine has not even had the timing job done yet which I plan to do at some point here soon and it is still running smooth!!
OK? Not sure how that relates to this video but cool story
Desires, wants, necessities, needs, it's all in the same vein. Sometimes you get what you want, and sometimes you need to change to what's best for the moment!
Thank you... For reminding me why my Honda Pilot was such a rewarding, frugal, reliable, worry free decision while I lust for a Land Rover. Every time I think of trading "up" into a Disco etc I come across a story like this....
Exactly!
Watching them justify their purchase whilst it falls apart in real time is one of the funniest things they have ever done. This was a terrible idea and will not end well.
But think of all the content they will be able to create on their way to financial ruin. Subscribed!
Great content guys! Well done. All kidding aside about LR reliability reputation, the LR4 is an incredibly versatile and distinctive design. As for the failed water pump, that is perhaps the most common fault on these vehicles (anywhere between 50-80k kms). Once the water pump is repaired the 3.0 V6 SC engine is incredibly reliable from experience (and many others who have chimed in anecdotally on forums). I've been running two of these for a while now with either no or only minor issues. The latter of which I easily (and inexpensively) repaired on my own. The reality is that so many people, including Land Rover owners, love to joke about reliability issues but truth be told, my Land Rovers have been more reliable than the German-made vehicles I've owned (despite being models that were well rated for reliability!)
Do older V8 Land Cruisers not exist in Canada?

I actually love my 2018 Jaguar XF Sportbrake with the Supercharged V6! They've come a long way in 2 years with the interior ha. Plus, got a free software update for Apple/Android Auto! Less than 250 in the US, it's been fun to have a rare car that people really love to talk about!
Would be fun to see you guys test one out! Mine has 553 HP claimed from a dual pulley E85 setup by VAP! 😁
It is probably the best colour for it, suits it well. Something to look at as it is being repaired, again.
At my old shop, we referred to the perpetual warning lights on Land Rovers as the three amigos. Probably 75% of the Discos had them, as well as leaky sunroofs and generally moist interiors.
Love you guys! Keep up the good work

I own a 2015 LR4 and I love it so much! And it’s been quite reliable to me tbh. The coolant system was down once and cost me about 6k to replace the coolant pipe. But I still love it tho. The driving quality is amazing, even after 10 years of active service. But maybe I should write down the prayer at the end and keep it in the glove box just in case 😅
