How’s this for a RWD drag race?!
We’ve got Mat lining up in a classic Mk4 Supra, and he’s facing off against Jodie Kidd in a G80 BMW M3!
Think this one will be a walkover for the BMW? Well, guess again! You see, although the Supra still has the same 2JZ 3-litre engine under the bonnet as when it was released in 1997, it’s had a little work done to it. It’s swapped two turbos for one much bigger one, and as a result this JDM classic now pumps out 708hp and 709Nm! What’s more, it’s also fitted with a new gearbox - the same 8-speed auto gearbox as found in the G80 M3!
In comparison, the G80 comes with a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six under the bonnet, but it can ‘only’ put down 510hp and 650Nm! Sure it may be much newer and come with launch control, but it’s also heavier than the Supra, tipping the scales at 1,730kg. In comparison, the Supra weighs in at 1,490kg.
So what do you think - is the Supra going to smash it?! Or is it not going to be able to handle that much power through its rear wheels? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

ZF 8HP70 transmission. Not BMW. ZF supplies this transmission to many different brands.

@@RiasGremoryS54 It’s not a BMW transmission if literally every brand has models with ZF boxes. Go take a look what models uses the 8HP70. From Jaguar F-type to Dodge Charger to Jeep Grand Cherokee to Aston Martin Vanquish to Rolls Royce Phantom, Range Rover sport and the list goes on and on.

for anyone wondering, small turbo will get you out of the hole faster but will suffer on the top end. A bigger turbo has more lag but the top end will pull like a rocket. #SIZEMATTERS

I have never seen Matt doing burnout in the start of a drag race. Of course he did that on purpose because he is sexist.
I love this trend of modernizing the transmission of older cars with something new. I hope this gets more popular, a LOT of older vehicles would be completely different vehicles going from a 4spd auto to something like a 6-8spd.

Yeah it’s something I’m doing to my R33 as we speak. I will also be using a gearbox from a BMW lol but the 7 speed from the F80 M3. Gearbox was the cheapest bit as well weirdly and is currently sat in the garage lol.

The BMW transmission mod for the supra is great. It helps the car stay in boost that is generally lost during manual gear shifts. We need more of these mods.
ZF 8HP70. ZF makes the transmission and supplies it to many brands.

I must say the way the bmw keeps up with the Supra even having 200hp less and 50 nm less is impressive
And with 240 extra kg!
the bmw cheating with power like usual, so this is about 120-140 hp difference and torque can be the same

And the supra putting out its 700hp at one point kn the rev curve due to big turbo.
Those bmws are very impressive, although they do put out more power than they advertise.

Not really. Seems to destroy acceleration a lot. A V160 Supra with 700 HP would be FAR quicker than 11.7.
BMW isnt known to have light drive trains, which makes me think this transmission must be eating quite a lot of power. Plus the gearing isnt good for acceleration.

I suspect that it says kph but the sppedo was scaled in mph. Take notice that it is scaled to 180, on the end of quarter mile this supra was going way more than 180 kph.

I couldn't believe how well and responsive the Supra gearbox was, I was thinking it would be more "rough" or sketchy, I've seen some automatic conversion that worked sort of well but this one is quick and smooth! Great job :D !

@@ayanrahman9371 Well, yea. This 700HP Supra has just 1 turbo. So, it has large gaps in it's powerband. Find a Twin turbo 700HP Supra with similar gearing & traction and watch it gap this Supra in a drag. 600HP M3 has a much more lineair powerband due to twin turbo's & amazing fine-tuned tuning WITH 4WD, so it has a stronger power delivery which is why it's so dam fast.
Let's imagine a SUPRA with a manual transmission and 600 HP and driven by the owner?

The biggest issue that's plagued the 2JZ for years has always been the tranmission choices. The 8HP or the DCT has given new life to the 2J, which is why I went DCT in my 2JZ swap. Shit is awesome

Tuned 2JZ with ZF8 gearbox is things that i have wished till now, glad i could see this things become real so fast and it SICK AF.
The exhaust note on that Supra is so good. It's not the usual high pitched, it's brutish.

I remember seeing an MK4 Supra in one of those old autosales booklets for 20K, I can’t even begin to explain my regret passing on that. I think he did that burnout on purpose too.

Actually it would not. That could be for a g-power m10 which is limited at maximal 8k revolutions but the zf8 is limited to 7.2 and meanwhile I know people with s54s using this, I know that for eg 8th gear won't last long in high rev ranges for eg. (To fast spinning output shaft). The S85B50 V10 would be perfectly mated to a dct. The dct has not the limitation to the rpms of the V10. For this variant you could use the Cantcu controller. The S62B50(V8) though would be a perfect fit to it.

Great to see, nice and close. 0.1 seconds in the 1/4 with a @200 hp difference...there are so many factors, but in the end great racing.
It must have horrible traction issues...I have 710hp in a 5580lb SUV that runs 11.5 in the 1/4 stock, with the power/weight of the Supra is should have been 10s easily.
@@S8ER street tires on concrete are no good for ETs. Put some drag radials on that Supra, get it on a decently prepped track with a familiar driver and that is a mid 10s car all day.

well to be fair the M models have a plateau of torque the powerband of a tuned 2 JZ is 5900-7500 (if its small turbo and not made head ( 800 hp on stock bottom end)
Brilliant swapping that gearbox. Never thought I'd see an Mk4 with flappy paddles too.
In Poland there are many of that Kind of swaps, many of them with 2jz+8hp in many other chassis
The magic of these Japanese cars used to be that you could buy and tune it for a fraction of the price of the performance cars that it destroyed, nowadays they're classics and as expensive as these performance cars!
And they fold up like a tin can if you're in an accident. The M3 in this video has like ... 4x the airbags and structural safety. It's really odd that people insist on comparing the two when they have so many differences.
