Here we go BMW fans, this is the one you’ve been waiting for… BMW M5 GENERATIONS DRAG RACE!!
We’ve got every generation of BMW M5, from the original E28 through to the F90, and we’re about to find out just how much the BMW M5 has come along since it first rolled off the production line.
So let’s see how they all compare. Starting with the E28, it’s powered by a 3.5-litre naturally-aspirated straight-six that can deliver 286hp and 340Nm of torque. This power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual. Going up against it we have the E34, which houses a 3.8-litre naturally-aspirated straight-six that can put down 340hp and 400Nm of torque. And just like the E28, power is sent to the rear wheels via a 5-speed manual gearbox.
Next up we have the E39, which is housing a 5-litre naturally-aspirated V8 under the bonnet! As a result, it’s way up on power compared to the E34, putting down 400hp and 500Nm. However, it still only comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox, and of course, power is sent to the rear wheels only.
Alongside this though we have the glorious E60, which comes equipped with an incredible 5-litre naturally-aspirated V10! This monster can put down 507hp and 520Nm of torque, with all that power being sent to the rear wheels via a 7-speed robotised manual gearbox.
For the final two cars, we’re switching up to dual-clutch automatic gearboxes. Starting with the F10, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that sends all its power to the rear wheels. However, the latest generation, the F90, is not only up on power (with 625hp and 750Nm), but it also comes equipped with four-wheel drive!
So will the F90 clean up against the opposition? Or could we have an upset on our hands? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The V10 powered E60 is arguably the most special M5 ever made. High strung/high revving motorsport derived, ITB equipped N/A engines are truly an art form!

Most people may not have loved the design, but the engine certainly was nothing to complain about~ So much power even to this day, and the raw sound of a N/A V10 is just spectacular. Too bad after the R8 and the Huracan being discontinued, there aren't any N/A V10s anymore. Actually, another complaint, the SMG transmission is not the best, but hey, you can't win em all. I don't think it was a bad transmission, you just have to get used to it, and some people like it because of the ferocity of the shifts.

The V10 in the e60 is one of the best sounding engines ever and the car design still looks good today. Love the e34 design and in Daytona Violet is the icing on the cake.
Tbh the E60 grows on you the more you look at it. I actually really like the E60's design in this M version.
@@OneIssueVoter can’t imagine the nightmares that the V10 gave people. Also the 4.0L N/A V8 in the E90 M3 is pretty much a smaller version of that V10 so it is almost just as nightmare-ish to maintain as well :(
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfan There's always someone making comments on these engines. They are vastly more reliable than most people think and require no special attention other than regular oil changes.
I don’t care how bad maintenance can be on them or if the newer m5’s are faster, as soon as I can comfortably afford it I’m upgrading from my e60 535d to the v10

The E39 is still my favourite BMW of all time. Such a pretty car. Clean lines. No fussy styling.
One of the best sedans ever made in my opinion. The time where BMW design was just perfection. I mean the E46 and E90 3 series, the E38 7 Series, the E39 5 Series, all these cars were just beautiful and timeless in their design.
Also, the proportions are so good that a friend told me they are studied in car design classes!
As someone who drives one, I will say the hype is more than justified
@@TonyKimtheamusementparkfanthe E46 didn't age a day. New lights and it still looks pretty modern. Pretty much no car from that era pulled that off.
I love my 98' 528i 5 speed. So fun.

Typically, the E60 is the M5 model marred by the horror stories of terrible reliability, but, in this case, it proved to be the most robust. It has always been a cult favorite of mine-- especially the seats. Long live the E60 V10!

the terrible reliability is part of it's charm.
If you want a reliable super luxobarge, get an E55 or an S65 AMG.
If you want a reliable sports car, get a corvette or 911.
but if you want a four door supercar, the E60 M5 is one of very few cars which truly fits this term.

It's amazing how far the M5 has come, even in recent years. Just staggering how much faster the F90 was compared the the E60.

Yohane Tsushima ever test driven the F90 BMW M5. It done 12.95 on 4WD and 12.12 seconds on FR Mode.

Honestly, the E60 was a car that was so ahead of its time in terms of its exterior design. It has aged so well in these modern days.

I'd still take the E60 all day long, owned one before and it spent more time getting repaired than actually being used, but despite all that, I loved it. When it ran, it sounded magical 👌🏼

My dad had a E28 M5 new , he still says it’s the best car he ever owned.
He’s 77 today and still loves cars ,was in the motor trade all his life .
The E28 BMW M5 in my opinion has around 510bhp.

E60 and E39 easily my favourites, e39 is such a handsome, timeless shape and sounds amazing. E60 still looks modern and that V10 sounds incredible and piles on speed relentlessly, it has much more character than the later boring m5’s also :)
One things for sure - the next M5 will most certainly be the ugliest based on current BMW stying trends!
E60 has the best sound but comes with tons of mechanical issues The best choice is the e39
E60 has the best engine out of all the M5s by far, but it also has the worst reliability out of all of them, since they have a tendancy to blow up and not work from rod bearing failures, so better change them sooner than later. Same issue with the E90 M3 with its 4.0L V8. Both are pretty much the same engine with the same problems. Surprised this E60 didn't have a problem with its engine after all the brutal launches it did. I'm sure the owner did their due diligence with their E60.
Depends on how old someone is, I didn’t even find those cars interesting when new, even less so now...
The s65/85 aren't hard to keep running good anymore, everyone knows what to do. They are just expensive. But having just bought an e60 m5, I don't care.. the noise and how direct the car is makes it 100% worth spending the money to keep it running.

I’ve owned both the E39 M5 and currently have the E60 M5 and while the E39 is amazing the sound and feeling of driving the E60 M5 is intoxicating and gets in your bones 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@sorinelpustiu5674 it’s a fact that the E39 M5 would annihilate the E55 (W211) on track and was much more of a drivers but the merc a sledgehammer and was quicker in a straight line.BTW the E55 your referencing came out in 2003 the E39 was out in 98/99. The W210 (out in 1995) wouldn’t stand a chance against an E34 let alone an E39. I’ve driven both and the E39 is a much better car to drive. Not saying the merc is

Mercedes in general makes more beats/brutes than BMW does.
But BMWs are better to drive and quicker.
Please note that the E60 is naturally aspirated. And has such a performance and did all that challenge.

E39 is easily the last of the good m5's the e60 is soft and very heavy car. Rather have the e34 and not to mention it has a much higher power potential if you were to go forced induction

I'm surprised the V10 did that many launches without blowing up.
S85, contrary to the opinion of couch racers, is considered one of the most reliable engines, and it is more reliable than S63 on F10 and F90. it just so happened that people were not ready for such a technologically advanced motor. It needed maintenance comparable to any sports car, not an ordinary car. More frequent oil changes and more expensive consumables, people were not ready for this then, and killed these motors
Similar to my e39 which had been unloved by its previous owner, I spent the money on it replacing things that had been cheaped out on and it transformed the car.
As my foreman at the time commented, when the car was about 14 years old, "she's getting on in years but she's still a thoroughbred and needs treating as such"
@danielartyukhov944 very true. If maintained, it will last. It just has tighter tolerances than many other mills. It's a sick car although personally M5s aren't my thing. The old ones are sick while the new ones are just too porky.

I had the M6 V10 back in the day, man I miss that car. It was legendary fun.
That E60 sounds the most badass of them all for me personally - when it picks up speed on the swing camera shot and by the time it reaches the 1/4 mile mark.
You cannot help but claim that the pinnacle of all M5's is the E39. That glorious 5.0L V8 is too freaking good. Still looks timeless, sounds gorgeous, and with a manual gearbox it completes the picture.
Having owned one I would agree. It was utterly sensational, and mine had a rear muffler delete so the sound it made was insane.

First time I saw an E39 M5 it was on a dual carriageway into a nearby city and a girl racer in a Golf GTi was goading the driver into a race. The M5 played along for a while and then its driver floored it - and I swear the colour of light changed around the M5 as it shot away!

Those metal balls from the F10, those are from the propshaft CV joint where it meets the rear diff. I've had these apart on my E46 and trust me, I know them well, because they're a PAIN IN THE ARSE 😅
Great fun as always. What non German speakers don't realize is they're having fun with Daniel & Mat in the translations...he is often saying something totally different from what you read in the "translations" 😉

I just got myself a f10 m5 stage 2 with 720hp and it just feels soo unreal, legit went from golf mk2 1.6 to that and its one of my dream cars

The E28 from the mid 1980s is my fave and one I remember from my old school days knowing an old long gone neighbour that had one on the next road. A posh hooligan's motor when the wife wasn't looking.
