New AMG SL 63 v BMW M8 v Audi R8: DRAG RACE

We’ve got our hands on the all-new Mercedes-AMG SL 63, and Mat’s about to see if it has what it takes to bring down some of its closest rivals - the BMW M8, and the Audi R8 Spyder!
So let’s see how the three compare. Starting with the AMG, it’s powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 which is good for 585hp and 800Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox, and it tips the scales at 2,048kg. But not only is it fairly heavy, it’s pretty pricey, costing from £172,000!
Then alongside it we have the BMW M8. Lift up the bonnet and you’ll find a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 under the bonnet, which is good for 625hp and 750Nm. So it’s up on power compared to the AMG, but it’s also up on weight, tipping the scales at 2,100kg! Thankfully it’ll leave a slightly smaller dent on your bank balance, with the price starting from £142,000.
Then finally we have the R8 Spyder. It’s powered by a 5.2-litre naturally-aspirated V10 that can put down 620hp and 580Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, and it’s the lightest car here, weighing in at just 1,695kg.
So will the all-new SL 63 win it? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

Considering the SL got less than 35 hp than both the M8 and R8 , and weighs a lot more than the R8 , it did a fantastic job!
In fact, the SL63 AMG could have won, but its driver did not drive well in the last 2 rounds.

The R8 will always be missed as one of the most beautiful and exotic yet extemely useable machine. My friend has a 2019 and he drives it all winter here in South Dakota. Blizzards and all, then come summer has it flown to Italy for track days and mountain roads.
It does it all, and extremely well.

the SL did better than expected. For that price there’s better options but it is very beautiful. Sad to see the Audi R8 is leaving us forever though

That wasn't better than expected at all. I expected it to at least win against the M8 considering it's the newest car here, whereas the other two are closing on end-of-life.
Don't get me wrong, it's a cool car that I'd definitely see myself buying used, but the price as new is crazy and the performance doesn't match up in the dry.
That being said, I expected the R8 to do better.
I remember this rooftop drag on TOP GEAR so vividly. James aka Mr Slow, Richard and Jeremy were the guys. What a nostalgic moment 😂😂

Coming from a BMW guy, i have to admit that SL is a beauty. Though it is the newest of the bunch. I also have to give props to the M8 and the R8. They are gorgeous in their own right and have aged like fine wine
SL63 imo looks as gorgeous as 2010 SLS AMG.

What I like most is that the cloth roof fits it very well, it seems like it was designed with it from the get-go. The M8 in particular has the same problem that any coupe-turned-convertible has: the roof just looks oddly shaped.

In my opinion the Mercedes is rather bland looking. The M8 is gorgeous, especially in that color. The R8 is beautiful, however the green is hideous though..
The SL is the fastest and sexiest car there. That's the winner.

I choose the SL overall, but without choosing a vehicle I choose the SL rev sounds. I love the M8 above all. But the SL has the better look.

Guys - Torque doenst make you quicker. Horsepower does as it is a product of Torque and RPM. The more Torque just comes through an overboost of the turbos.

shouldve shown the fastest drag race times for each car instead of the times just for the last race. But on another note that SL is hands down the best looking car by a mile, has the perfect balance between elegance and sportiness.
Man, not everyone in the world likes the swoopy rear end and the triangular headlights that has nothing to do with the soft graphics of the whole car.
I also thought they would, seems a little biased to only show the times where the audi won.

These races are interesting because they don't have much to do with driving ability, it's more about what your car's inconsistent onboard computer system decides to do when it's time to go.

@@MaverickPhantom Also look at the old GT coupé/convertible, probably a bit cheaper, way lighter and the backseats on the new sl/gt are useless anyway, so unless you live somewhere 4wd is required i'd say get the old one

The AMG GT had the same amount of HP and torque but is way quicker than the SL , so the GT has the most amount of potential if u ask me

I love that Merc Sl and the way Sam drives it. Beautiful car. The M8 is the next favourite. The Audi is looking a bit dated now.

Not Mat trying to explain why an unusual race is important. The Mercedes did better than I foresaw but in the end faster cars pulled. Like Yanni, Mat looked conquered when he lost the 1st two races.

Hey Matt, you’re probably might not see this but to remove the soft limiter from now on, try putting it into neutral, and then just rev it My cousins Mercedes has the exact same problem so once we put it into neutral, it removes it perfectly fine and we can rev it. Also, if that doesn’t work, you can try again in neutral, but do your little trick of putting it into launch control or whatever or hold both paddles or however you do it and try it that way, but make sure the car is neutral. Try this for all the cars that have the soft limiter that you drive. Also, you could try this on your Audi.
I’m a bit in ballot over these 3 cars. I think I’ll rather go for the AMG S63 for it’s nice looking design. Performance wise it will also be my first choice.

people usually agree it’s more ‘super car’ than ‘grand tourer’
and while it certainly possesses the necessary qualities that allow it to compete with the aforementioned vehicle classes,
I think that when you hoon it around and eventually get it to hook up on the track or road, the discernible attitude of the Audi R8 is what I would describe as a german muscle car.
• The rear-bias quattro awd system,
• the ‘over-steery’ at low speed
• ‘under-steery’ at high speed car attitudes that you experience,
• the visceral nature of interaction between the power, transmission, and resultant mechanical outputs at the wheels
No. GT has nothing to do with it. A GT can be sulercar such as the GTC4Lusso.
The R8 is just a sports car not a supercar.

I suggest that when they do the thing the best lap times of all three goes should be use rather than the final race stats because some of these cars are inconsistent on their launch. This seems more appropriate and fair for me. Sam won the first two races and the way that Mercedes flies I doubt if the Audi did beat his time. Just my humble opinion

In the new SL, you can also use a physical button to put the roof up. I saw it on Remove Before Race RBF
For the braking test, the SL63 manually shifted down the gears. it must affected the result by much!

I have to say the mercedes did really well to be down on power and up on weight i thought it would lose miserably compared to the other two... but it did surprisingly well especially dding the fact everyone was driving through a swimming pool... i would love to see this race in the dry
