BMW 7 Series v S-Class v A8: DRAG RACE

- We’ve taken three of the most luxurious limos around out of their natural habitat, and we’ve got them lining up for a drag race!
We’ve got Mat in the BMW M760e 7 Series, and he’s taken on the Audi A8 L 60TFSI and the Mercedes S-Class S580e over the quarter-mile!
So let’s see how these three luxurious limos stack up. Starting with the 7 Series, it’s packing a 3-litre straight-six turbo engine that can produce 571hp and 800Nm of torque. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 2,525kg. When it comes to cost, this plug-in hybrid 7 Series will set you back around £120,000.
Alongside it we have the Audi A8. It’s housing a 3-litre V6 turbo under the bonnet, and this puts down 462hp and 700Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it’s a fair bit lighter than the BMW, tipping the scales at 2,340kg. It’s also cheaper than the BMW, costing around £93,500.
Then finally we have the S-Class. Powered by a 3-litre straight-six turbo it can produce 510hp and 750Nm. It’s equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, but unlike the other two, power is sent to the rear wheels only! It’s also heavier than the Audi, coming in at 2,435kg, and this edition of the S-Class costs around £108,000.
So the 7 Series has the most power, so will it be a clean sweep? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

Considering the Audi's much lower power output compared to the M760 It did impressively well
The battery for electric motors in the BMW was nearly empty whereas Mercedes had over 50% of its battery charge left. How much "juice" Audi had, the shots from its instrument cluster didn't tell?

@@adityaparihar4241 BMW M760e had almost empty hybrid battery pack during Carwow's drag race, and if the battery is almost "empty", the control unit of, for example, cars and e-bikes (in y. 2023) avoids straining the chemical battery (to avoid damage).
The practical horsepower of the drag raced M760e with 5% hybrid battery charge was probably the total announced power minus some or most of its electric motor hp. The announced electric motor power of the M760e is 197 hp/280Nm.
The M760e won the drag race mostly with its B58B30 internal combustion engine whereas at least Mercedes had full electric motor assistance during the drag race.

No, of course the charge level of the (hybrid) battery pack is managed so that it gives full electric assistance when sufficiently full and the control unit avoids straining the chemical battery if its nearly "empty" (regardless of EV in year 2023).

@@ereinaldy20 I do remember this but relative to the competition and its previous gen it looked odd ,now that BMW is team controversial any car that has any bit of good design looks fantastic in comparison ..still think the previous gen S class is the best looking .

The BMW 7 series here in Australia ranges from about $285k for the 740i ,drive away , around to about $300k drive away for the 740d Xdrive which is a special order only , right up to about $360k for the i7 M70 . All these are amounts are a rough give or take figure etc Inc on road costs

Honestly, the synergy between Rory, Sam, and Mat is off the charts! It's like watching a trio of car-enthusiast buddies having the time of their lives. Their camaraderie makes the races not only thrilling but also hilarious. The playful banter, especially between Mat and Sam, adds a whole new layer of entertainment. I couldn’t agree more with @mtho3509, this should definitely be the standard lineup. Oh, and can we talk about the Merc's 'special massage' seats making a cameo in the race? Classic! 🤣🏎🔥
The best compliment I can give them is that Mat is Clarkson, Sam is Hammond and Rory is May.

4:22 the reason there’s a soft limiter is because the engine is cold, let it warm up then it lets you rev to redline. You see it move a tiny bit up when he revs it

I think that the reason the brakes are hotter from the long controlled stop (in the 1/4mi) vs the 100 mph brake test is b/c the temp of the brakes are going to be proportional to the amount of KE the brakes have to stop. KE=.5 M*V^2 so the extra velocity plays an exponential part. Pressing the brake harder will make it heat up at a faster rate but it will be for a shorter time during this time the rate of air cooling is much lower than the rate of brake heating so mostly negligible
The electric only drag at the start was so anti dramatic and slow but somehow entertaining! Top video again!

The Audi did quite well considering it wasn't the S8 model and was with the lowest hp but still manage to keep up with them.... not to mention the cheapest of them

@@jojajo2707people who afford an A8 would definitely prefer the comfor that bmw or merc(prob merc) offers for 10k more. Definitely worth the 10k extra for the s class or the 17k for 7 series far more beautiful both than the A8.

The speed of new cars are just awesome. I remember having to do a ton of wrenching and mods 30 years ago to get a street car into the 12s. Now you have huge luxury cars doing it like its nothing.

It is crazy! I remember being soooo excited when I put a 100 shot on my 95 Jetta with the VR6/5 speed that was already modded with a chip (yes it was that old 😂), intake and exhaust and ran 13.3’s@107. Now that’s what family sedans and minivans run. 😂

That new gen 7 series might not look the best but it got so much presence and character, it’s so bold you can’t miss it on the road, giving me Royce Rolls Phantom vibes…

The BMW doesn’t have a soft limiter. It’s just Mat that doesn’t have mechanical sympathy and was reving it on a cold engine so it restricted the revs
Yet it also has monstrous acceleration.
The proper way to organise a drag race would be to warm up the internal combustion engines before straining them
Yeah, they purposefully made is such that you cannot rev the engine while it's cold. That is why it started to increase the rev limit when the engine was hot.
The BMW is ugly just like the rest of their ugly lineup. Even Nissan's are cooler than BMW's.

Well in Audi A8 we have made this slight changes in the tires which At the best of times, resistance and friction cause a build-up of heat inside tyres which makes the air within expand. With increased road surface temperatures the pressure will increase even further - causing the tyres to expand even further - and could lead to premature wear and possibly interfere with braking.thats why it is showing steam
Of course the Merc came first. It’s got the ‘special massage’ seats after all 😂

If you set the M760e in full electric mode, you get extra power and you can do full throttle in stead of trying to balance it.
The S-Class is the best looking by far..

I'd choose a Beamer all day but aside from this hyper luxury segment (Maybach, Rolls,,...) an S-Class is really the way to go.

The BMW 7 Series really grew on me now after i've seen it several times in Person on the Autobahn. It has crazy Presence, hard to describe, it looks the best in all black especially.
i love the fact that Sam used engine braking as well in the braking test, you can see him downshift, but Rory and Matt weren't

Newly 7 series is better compared with others, 7 series interior, massive screen, quality is way more feel higher. Runner up goes to s class following A8 .
