BMW FANS LET’S GOOOOOO!!
We’ve got our hands on every generation of BMW M3, and they’re about to go head-to-head over the quarter-mile to find out just how far the M3 has evolved over the generations.
So for this line-up, we have:
- E30 M3
- E36 M3
- E46 M3
- E92 M5
- F80 M3
- G80 M3
It literally doesn’t get better than this!
The question is, how different will the performance be across these cars? After all, we can already see in the stats just how different they are. The E30 M3 rolls up with a 2.3-litre 4 cylinder that can produce 200hp and 240Nm, whilst the G80 is packing a 3-litre twin-turbo straight-six that can produce 510hp and 650Nm!
So surely it’ll be a clean sweep for the G80, right? Or could an older edition spring a surprise? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

E46 is a beast, but in all fairness, Matt is an insanely skilled driver and pretty sure the lad in the e92 m3 isn’t as skilled as Matt, he should’ve been closer

Had a 1986 E30 BMW 323i automatic in henna red. It lasted 24 years with 840000km original engine and gearbox no overhaul. Truly the best car I've ever owned. Never bought another BMW after it. I don't know what the new cars are like, I can only imagine how good they must be now, but the E30 will always remain in my heart. I regret having sold mine on. I now drive a Honda Civic that I respect, but don't really care for, like I did with my E30. Thank You BMW for all the memories ❤❤❤❤ Respect!
The true BMW's died with the E60/E90. The last true BMW's are the E39 and the E46 (E38 also). Now, the 3 series are the same size on the outside as the E39 5 series and smaller on the inside. I owned a 2001 E39 for 15 years, now I own a 2018 430i. No comparison on the comfort and the driving feel (the E39 was 10 classes above)
E30 is nice
It's scary to think that the E92 is 15 years old and still looks absolutely stunning, same for the E46
Those two were the best generations for the M3 imo, although the E36 and the F80 are still equally as beautiful :) Although the E92 has the best engine by far, because that S65 4.0L V8 is such a special engine.

As an E46 M3 owner I am extremely proud. What a car, incredible piece of engineering in its time. For it to keep up with the new cars is outstanding. I love mine and won’t change it for anything. Every time I drive it, it feels like the first time.

E46 and 92 are my picks. E46 is my all time favourite..perfect balance and the fact it still is any where near cars 15 years newer is crazy. but I just can’t ignore that v8 of the next generation😮💨

The E46 and the E92 both have absolutely timeless designs. They've both aged like fine wine. As much as I love the E92 and its high revving V8, the E46 is still king for me. I love that car, and the way it drives. It's enticing to say the least.

The E92 was a special, special car in its day. I’ve never owned one (I’ve owned a standard 1999 E39 BMW 520i) but I’ve been in one as a passenger and it’s speed stunned me. This was back in 2008 when it was new. The E92 will always be my favourite- in my opinion it’s certainly the best sounding M3 in fact the best sounding car I’ve ever heard in my life. What a car!!!.
Yep.. I’ve had a lot of time in the e92. It’s very special. I also drove a 600hp supercharged e92 and my lord… perfection!
I don't think the e92 in this race was driven right. The launch control was bad on these and they need to be driven in simply manual M mode with DCT. 12.6 is easily possible
Also the character, sound and everything is so goooood. 6yrs of ownership and I smile everyday I drive my @com3t_m3
Even today I get the respectable nod from car enthusiasts. Driven the M2 comp, f89 M3 comp too which were all quick...but lacked the excitement the E92 got

The looks, the sounds, the nostalgia. That E46 M3 is my favourite out of all the M3's as well, but the E92 looks and sounds just as amazing.

S54 is legendary. Mine was making around 800 to the crank at over 200k miles on the original engine!

@@ty1949 I was running the maximumpsi kit with a precision 6870 turbo and custom exhaust/intake manifold. Never touched the engine or transmission and it ran like this for years before I returned it to stock and sold it. Best dyno was 720 rwhp @ 18.5 psi and I had it up to 22/23psi before I sold it, maybe high 700's?
E30. Hands down. The others may be faster but the E30 is just such an incredible car. It's such a raw experience, just you and the car, nothing else, and that makes it the best drive, in my opinion.
G80 wipes no difficulty
@@junyaiwase for me it's not about the speed of the drive, it's more about the experience while doing it. The G80 is fast, it's a thrilling drive, but the E30 is just so much more than just the speed. If you can't drive without electronic aids, then you can't drive an E30. The new cars do half the driving for you, these days.
Sure, they're quick, but if they didn't have all of those electronics keeping you on the road, they'd be almost impossible to drive properly.
Having driven both variants, I'd still pick the E30.

I’m a honda guy, and absolutely love clowing on the bmw brand really for no reason at all. I’ve owned a white ‘91 735i and a e46 sedan. Love everything about bmw’s especially the special feel you get when you’re in that all black interior and the orange dash lights when it’s night time. E46 M3 is one of the 5 bmw chassis’ that i’d own. Such an amazing car

Honestly they are just a bit underwhelming, I've been a passenger in one with my mate giving it some and I was thinking to myself that my f30 335d feels quicker. I know my 335d is not actually quicker but It definitely pushes you back in your seat more and just feels more aggressive .
Naturally aspirated engines, you need to rev the hell out of the e92 v8 to get peak power, sometimes folks start from too low revs when downshifting while it should be starting ideal from 5k band

I'm going to attribute how close the E46 was to the E92 to driver error vs. Matt's experience drag racing. Get someone who can do a clean launch in the E92 and you may well have it sitting perfectly between the E46 and the F80.

All of these bmws have a place in my heart. And I’m sure that goes for all of us bmw enthusiasts.
For me the e9x is my fav all time, current I love the g80s , the f80s left a great impression , the e46 is a huge jump from generations before it and set the standard , the e36 was the m3 we almost did not get but of course the euro spec is what was needed not the crappy American version slower engine that most of America got, the e30 is just a legend it’s beautiful and classic, slow as it is it’s a collectors item.

I agree. I also think the F10 M5 is aging well. I have '14 Sahkir Orange M5 and people still give me compliments to this day.
F80 aged really well. Clean lines with good proportion, looks on point from every angle and the performance is not too far off the G80.

@@BETNCORT Guess it's just my opinion having owned all the M3s from E46 onwards, i find the E92 the clumpiest and least "M3" out of the lot. But heaps of people love them. That generation DCT is pretty awful too! Haven't quite perfected it back then... and as you can see it's slower than the previous generation in a straight line, and didn't handle anywhere near the E46 either.
My favorite m3 is the e36 not quite sure why, just find it so beautiful

This e36 m3 definitely either wasn’t running right or not driven properly. It done a 1/4 mile same time as my 328! A healthy evo should be level with the e46 m3 all day long
@@oshogweikekhai5499 14.1 was with my US M3, 13.5 was with my stock Euro E36 M3, 13.2 was with 3.64diff ratio (same as E46 M3's 3.62)...the only advantage of the stock E46 vs E36 is the much shorter diff ratio and 8k redline, that, both of these can be done for approx 2k euro and you'll be faster then an E46 M3 :D
The F80 has been my daily driver for the last 3 years and I’m still in love with it like the first day. I’m glad the G80 is so hideous, otherwise I probably would’ve upgraded and that would’ve been a mistake.
As the proud owner of a 2004 m3 for 19 years. I can honestly say she puts a smile on my face every time I driver her. With 152k miles she has never left me stranded once. A true masterpiece
Had the E36 Evo back in the day, and didn’t feel as connected when I swapped to an E46. The differential in the E36 made steering with the rear dead easy, and the power was beautifully linear. E46 had no real finesse in the handling, and all the torque was downstairs so chasing revs was pointless. An Estoril Blue E36 Evo still makes me smile. A real classic IMO.
I had the Estoril Evo, with 284° cams, X-pipe, LTW flywheel, 3.64 diff, CSL rear arms, lightened to 1400kg without gutting, it went as faster than stock E46 at the time!
E46 and F80 are so freaking beautiful. I love them ❤
My first M3 was the E46 which I got when I was 23yrs old and I absolutely loved it but I did trade it in for the F92 model and after that I started to get M5’s because my dad got the E60 which was the last naturally aspirated M5 with a W10 engine. My first M5 was the F10 and I got the competition pack (they didn’t have a Competition version of the M5 just an additional option called the competition pack) and I now have the current F90 M5 Competition which has the AWD XDrive. I’ve also a Mercedes C63 AMG S which I’ve had modified since I couldn’t get my hands on a Black Series version. When I first saw the front of the G80 M3 I loved how much more aggressive the front bumper looks over the F80 but wasn’t keen on the front grills as it doesn’t look like the traditional BMW kidney grill but I’ve really grown to love it and might even get the M4 G82
I love all M3s but damn the E46 is so iconic. Such a classic look

Would be interesting to see the prices adjusted for inflation, to see just how much more expensive the newer ones are (or aren't). Also the E36 (in Europe) and E46 were available with SMG, while the E92 was also available with a DCT. Seems kind of unfair to compare the clutch-pedal versions in a race including newer cars--one with DCT and the other with auto. I'm sure they'd still be behind but would make it more "even" in terms of equipment.
Love that Matt’s favorite is the E46, it did really well and was nice to see it being a driver with 150,000 miles. About to hit 190,000 miles on mine. There’s so much to love about them.

I owned an e92 and they are NOT that tough to launch. Matt does an exceptional job of launching (all his practice), but the e92 driver did exceptionally poor (shifting was terrible too). I am not trying to be critical or mean...but come on 🤣
Yeah e92 driver was terrible. I've raced e46 in my e92 off the lights and did win.
And I reckon that E46 is tuned . 13.3s is unbelievable for the E46 (as is 13.6 for the E92). In real life the E46 doesn't stand a chance.
Totally agree with Matt, the e46 is my favorite generation, especially in looks. The latest generation is the Quasimodo of that model.

the e92 really should pull on an E46...e92 driver probaly isn't up to par with matt...and that e46 seems pristine/healthy...
I've owned both and the gap between them is actually pretty big. Not sure what was going on in this race.
I had an e46 m3 convertible when i was 20 years old, 12 years ago. I couldnt really afford it, but i just about managed. My god it was an amazing car to drive. Id always find the corsa gang at asda carpark and park my m3 near them. I honestly felt like the king of the chavs when i would be coming out of asda and they where all stood looking at it 😂 loved that car. Mine was in the pheonix yellow. Beautiful!
The e92 in my opinion is the most timeless m3 ever made. Still think looks better than any new model
Love the driver of E30. Man was just happy to be driving his car and it was so funny to hear him say that 😂
I belive it was Mick Schumacher or Arthur Leclerc driving the E30.
I agree with Mat, the E46 is the coolest M3 of all. I just love the unfussy, timeless look of it - feels like it would still be cool in another 20 years. And I'm really surprised at how much quicker it is than the E36, because on paper it doesn't look like there's that much between them.
I used to miss 2nd gear often on my e36. Not that I wanted to but when getting on it is when it would happen.
Nothing like that NA V8 E92, sheesh. I don't care how much slower it is. Sounds amazing and still looks great.
that driver was trash it definitely should beat the e46

Was thinking that. In that last race he was absolutely on it launching the E46. Made me think in the E92 probably would've crushed it
