What’s quicker in a drag race - a Mk4 Supra with £40k worth of mods added to it, or a Hot Wheels Legends UK Fan Vote Winning Mazda RX-7 from 1983 that’s been absolutely stripped out and is now used as a time attack car.
Well, it’s time to find out!
So let’s see how these two compare. Starting with the Supra, the original 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo has had one of the turbos removed, while the original automatic gearbox has been swapped for an 8-speed ZF gearbox from a BMW 530d. It’s also fitted with a transbrake that’ll help to build up boost and propel it off the line.
All of this means the Supra can produce an incredible 700hp and 780Nm of torque. It tips the scales at around 1,500kg, and to buy this exact car would cost around £80,000 - £40k for the base car, and £40k for the mods.
Then we have the RX-7, which has had so many mods applied to it that it’s hardly even an RX-7 anymore! Unsurprising then, that it was a finalist in the UK leg of the 2023 Hot Wheels Legends Tour, vying for the chance to be recreated as a 1:64 scale die-cast model!
Under the bonnet you’ll find a 2-litre 4 cylinder from the original Civic Type R which has also had a turbo added to it, and it’s also fitted with a manual gearbox from a BMW 330d.
Given it’s a time attack car, it has been absolutely stripped and added with tonnes of aero, and it now tips the scales at just 840kg!
But there’s also a special guest contender to take on both of these cars - a 911 Carrera T! It’s fitted with the standard 3-litre turbocharged flat-six, and this can produce 385hp and 450Nm of torque. It weighs in at 1,470kg, but the question is, will the power-to-weight ratio help it propel itself to victory?

Personally 11.6 seconds for 700 hp isn't crazy at all when the current M4 Competition with RWD does numbers like these while weighing a lot more

If that many drag races are done, I'm sure a lot of us will appreciate having a small sheet with all the times of each and every race for each and every car instead of just giving the time of the last race. Would make all the difference and I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard for the carwow editing team.
Repeated the drag race like 3 times, felt like I was I watching the fast and the furious. I'd love to see more of the supra, that thing is insane.
I was expecting Sam is going to whip out the 911 turbo s instead of The 911 Carrea T . Anyway, the brake test is probably expected LOL .

That Supra with the ZF 8-speed is a game changer; it's incredible to see it perform at this level. 💪 And while I love the raw power of that time attack RX7, drag racing might not be its forte. 😅 By the way, the BMW transmissions being used here-definitely speaks to their durability in high-performance situations, doesn't it? And as much as I'm a fan of manual gearboxes, there's no denying that autos have the upper hand in racing scenarios. 🏁

That time attack RX7 looks like an absolute weapon, but I'm not sure it's built for drag racing! Also what's with the BMW transmissions? Are they bulletproof or something?
They are easy to adapt to the car
Not really bulletproof but are easily mounted to those engine, plus those 3L diesel gearboxes can handle a lof of torque.
Not really BMW but ZF. They make some of the best transmissions in the world.
Yeah ZF make great transmissions for a bunch of popular car companies
ZF trans know how to manage the output from the engine for the best performance you need and they both use the diesel trans to manage a huge torque from the engine

As fun as manuals are, this really shows the auto advantage in racing.
No, it shows the disadvantage of having a car set up for fast laps with half the horsepower of what you're up against.
That said, the Supra is an incredible bit of kit.

I have a fwd manual and beat dct fwd's and some awd's , it comes down to driver knowing their car and ability.
If we're talking about the tech, we need to factor out the driver, and in that case, i hate to break it, but, modern autos and especially dcts are definitely superior to manuals in terms of shifting times. but just for the fun of it, I'd take a stick all day.@@davidgriggs3967

Man that was a great race. That Supra has so much drama while handling the business esp during gear shifts. Just awesome.
I wish we had time attacks on some race track and not just drag race. That huge rear wing must've created huge drag for RX7. Low weight doesn't help it much, since the car doesn't have good grip at the start, especially at the rear, since it can be very light and simply doesn't push the wheels hard enough into the asphalt. I know some dudes put additional ballast into the back of their cars to have a better launch. This is also why Porshe has such a good launch, despite having way less HP. I also suspect that Supra's suspension is way softer then Mazda's one, which is also an advantage in quarter mile race. And, of course, the automatic gearbox with a "cheat code" for better launch makes Supra unbeatable in the current race.

YESSS!!! My suggestion was heard!! That Carrera T did not do as bad as one would think against modified cars! Especially a Supra. Really good baseline though, need more Carrera T compares instead of Turbo! What else can a base 911 take on? Manual or auto.
