    Seriously, who cares if they're 'nordic', 'eastern' or 'northern.' Estonia is a great country no matter what, don't change your flag. I think it's really beautiful. Love from Spain.

      @wardeni4806 Před 5 lety +2

      Well, I think if they want to they should go for it. If the nation feels like they're more in touch with their Nordic history and want to show that by changing their flag, it's their right. I don't think it's a bad thing to want to connect with their roots and make it visible. Also, Latvians and Lithuanians usually say that Estonia isn't Baltic because the people there aren't related to them at all.

      @hUCK- Před 7 lety

      It's almost trippy (with respect) when looking at pictures like the one in this video and then looking at the flag as it is now. Just my personal opinion.

    • @happyswedme
      @happyswedme Před 7 lety +4

      Hence the both part. Lots of people don't seam to know the sigifigance of the cross, many take it for being religious. The sideways nordic cross is not a symbol for christianity but one for nordisim, you use a nordic cross flag to show the world "I AM NORDIC" while a off center, multicolored circle says, we are not nordic but subjugated by them (sapmi & greenland) when estonians use a tricolor they are basically making a statement saying "our revolution is more important than our nordicness". however wouldn't it be cool if estonia became the first nation in the world to use 2 flags simultaneously

  • @kr0pp
    @kr0pp Před 7 lety +248

    I know I'm biased, because I'm Estonian myself, but I think that our flag is really aesthetically pleasing, plus the fact that it looks like blue sky, the forest and the white snow. Top 3 flag for sure to me. I personally hope that we never adopt the nordic cross variant, although the one with blue base and white cross outlined by black looks kinda cool.

    Actually the history of Estonian flag is much more interesting. The colours blue, black and white were first adopted and are still used by Eesti Üliõpilaste Selts (EÜS, Estonian Students' Society) which is the oldest academic student organization in Estonia. The first flag which was made in 1884 is still intact and kept in Estonian National Museum. I recommend to Google it :)

    • @random_estonian5356
      @random_estonian5356 Před 7 lety +5

      Exactly. The Livonians were aqually part of the Finno-Ugry family and were indepedent until the Prussian Teutonic Order came in and began the "Baltic Crusade".

    • @Jubinakas
      @Jubinakas Před 7 lety

      Livonian Confederation consisted of both Estonia and Livonia, so I would still consider it incorrect to say that Livonians conquered Estonia. There is a good reason why Estonians say that there was 700 years of serdom under Germans and not Livonians. The Latter would also include Estonians themselves.

    If they had chosen to go with a nordic cross type flag with those three colours, the fimbriation should be a metal (in this case white). The concepts described here somewhat went another direction. It's not that you have to follow the rule of tincture with flags, but it looks better. The flag of Faroe Islands goes against this rule by using a blue fimbriation, but i guess this was pretty much because you can only have so many combinations of red white and blue with the nordic cross before they start to look the same. To use a white field is kind of bold.

    Today I was walking in my tiwn and I found this little badge with three Blue lions and a yellow background. I remembered when you talked about the danish coat of arms and I looked for hearts but there werent any. Then a few hours later I watch your video and I see the Estonian coat of arms and I'm like "Oh! That's the one I picked up earlier!" ps. I live in Norway

    Thanks a lot for this very interesting video about the the Estonian flag and coat of arms but there is a big mistake at 2:49.
    In the communist coat of arms, "Kõigi maade proletaarlased, ühinege!" and "Пролетарии всех стран, соединяйтесь!" mean "Workers of the world, unite!", in Estonian and in Russian respectively. It doesn't read "the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic".
    But it's true however that "Eesti NSV" in the center is the abbreviation for "Eesti Nõukogude Sotsialistlik Vabariik" ("Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic" in Estonian).
    Thanks Barby from France for your awesome videos.
    Un très grand merci à toi et à toute la super équipe de Geography Now. Passionné d'histoire et de géographie, j'apprécie toujours énormément vos vidéos !

    Of the 4 Estonian Nordic variants here's what i think of each
    1: This one is "ok" it's not my favourite, plus we already have Sweden & Åland which both have blue backgrounds so in a sense, no
    2: This one's also is "ok", it's a little better than the other one TBH. But it does look like Finlands flag from afar so while it's "better" one some levels, no
    3: I feel like this one has too much detail to it, that really narrow white line when there's already white in the bottom, is my nitpick, but other than that I find this one very plausable
    4: I'll say it, the fourth one is the best one of the bunch, it keeps a simple design, the cross being narrower than Finland's is also a nice choice whoever designed it, All the colours fit together well, having the top blue and the bottom white is recognisable from afar. So yeah, if Estonia's gonna switch to one of these let it be the fourth one.
