@@rubiochica You are living in 20-30 years in the past, my friend. Please try to remember when did you stop actually hearing daily jokes about Finns!? The anecdotes died with the envy. Catching up with Finns is in short terms questionable, however, still the best motivator for Estonians. Estonians are soooo competitive.
My father and grandfather were in the Estonian resistance through WW2, while my father was a teenager. They escaped, with my grandmother and her young daughter (she was actually my father's stepmother, and was actually from Russian aristocracy, as her family moved to Estonia before the 17' revolution). They all fled to Germany shortly after the war as the Curtain came down.
Just before they left, my grandmother's family were taken and killed by the soviets, my grandmother and her daughter were the only 2 to survive because fate had her out of the house that day, and neighbors had warned her what the soviets were doing and told her not to return home. She never got to say goodbye to any of them.
Upon reaching Germany, my father served in the US Army with the Labor Services, along with other Baltic veterans until he, his step sister and my grandparents, were allowed to come to America in 1949, where he also served for a short while as an Army instructor for what would later become our Special Forces units. .
My father never got to see his 4 brothers or his natural mother again, although by the 70s, a few letters got smuggled in and out.
The family farm, as was the case for most Estonian landowners, was taken by the soviets.
In the early 70s, my father inquired about the possibility of visiting, and he was assured by the State department that given his and my grandfather's role in the resistance, they were very likely still wanted as criminals by the soviets and would likely be arrested or worse.
Sadly, he passed away several years before Estonia regained its freedom. And as my mother wasn't Estonian, she made no effort to maintain any connection with the culture or the Estonian community.
During the 80s, when my brothers and I served in the military, we were shocked to learn that (a) - we had this entire collection of Estonian relatives (3 of my father's brothers managed to survive and have families). We found this out because (b) as many of our 'new' cousins had been conscripted into the Russian army and navy over the years - our security clearances were all held up each time one of us enlisted - the cold war was raging at the time and we were all going into technical fields.
This video brought back so many memories of the stories and history my father and grandfather tried to teach to us.

I enjoyed reading your comment, my mother was Estonian and immigrated to Canada in 1949 as well. I was was born in Canada and my mother never spoke much of Estonia, I can only imagine what the Estonians went through living under Russian rule.

I love that at 3:05 you mention that Kreutzwald was a son of a serf ( in his younger years he himself was a serf). It really shows what an accomplishment for the people of Estonia it was.
To add Kreutzwald also was a doctor and graduated in 1833 from the faculty of medicine at The University of Tartu, from where only 13 years prior to that the first (recorded) Estonian, Kristjan Jaak Peterson entered and graduated from. To put to perspective the situation of Estonians before the national awakening and abolishment of serfdom, the University of Tartu was the only one in the Estonian area and had been existing since 1632. Meaning it took around 200 years before the first openly Estonian student started studying there.

I'm a Finn. I love my brothers in Estonia. Our history is same. We almost speak the same language. Some might say that they are just different dialects. Finns volunteers fought for Estonia in 1918 and Estonian "soomepoisid" fought bravely for Finland in against Soviet Union. In my mind. We are brothers.
I agree. We are one Finno-Ugri people....there is also Hungary but well i dont know how much are we related to them. 80% of words sound the same in Estonian and Finnish but sadly these 80% of words dont mean the same things. Suomi❤Eesti :)

I visited Estonia in 1992. Brought my father‘s ashes there as he was Estonian and wanted to rest there. Spent time in Talin and surrounding area. The people were very friendly Tallin is a beautiful city.

Great video, absolutely loved it as I do whenever someone talks about our nation.
Anyhow, wanted to point out 2 things
1 - you shouldve mentioned that the right wing autocrat who seized power in 1934 had been the president since independence, and did so because he was going to lose the upcoming election
2 - while it is true that there we're many conscripts, the vast majority of Estonians in the Nazi army were volunteers because of the animosity towards the Russians and also because Germany claimed to be a liberator and was accepted as such at first.
As an Estonian, and a fan of history,I'm really glad that somebody cleared that up, really gives some extra perspective:)
For a super quick history it's not particularily important, but of course it is important to us, Estonians, and I agree 100%. The one thing I must clarify though is that there were many volunteers conscripting to Wehrmacht, but it was not because we're Nazis but because during the short Soviet occupation from June 17th 1940 to December 3rd 1941 the Soviets managed to wreak so much havoc, mass murdering people, mass deporting people to Siberia from infants to elderly, with no extra clothes, shelter or proper tools and with a daily ration of bread that feeds a grown person for an hour. We weren't even clear on the Nazi Germany's perspective at that time. My dear wife and therefore my kids are alive today because her grandfather was arrested for a "kulak" in 1941 and shot to death in Novosibirsk, but her grandmother managed to hide and evade the deportation with the kids, with help from the locals. That's how close it still is, although it happened 80 years ago. And come to think of it, I'm only here because my own grandparents, who didn't know each other at the time, were deported from Karjala to Estonia. So I'm a descendant of immigrants. @@TTFerdinand My grand parents managed to escape via the sea and thanks to a true hero who sailed from Sweden, this hero unfortunately had his feet spiked up and he himself was left until the blood made his head explode, he was hung upside down. But I am alive today due to this hero so I really hope he is in heaven now.

estonians were not forced by the nazis's. they were volunteers in one of the most decorated SS units, 20th waffen grenedier. They were honorable fighters, never convicted of any war crimes, and even stood as guards at the Nuremburg trials.

I wouldn’t call the freedom gained after 18’ democracy, most estonians were peasants who supported communists and estonian bolcheviks. In the first parliament 63% of mandates/seats were held by three parties that promised socialism and rallied using communist slogans and promises.
I’m still learning about our history but it’s quite weird how people are so keen on thinking that peasants who worked for the benefit of local and baltic-saxon lords most definetely were against the people who promised and gave them land.

The Soviet Union was falling apart at that time anyway. It didn't take much for various republics to start proclaiming independence. In August 1991 there was a failed coup by the Communist Party of the USSR, after which it was banned, thus ending the Communist rule in the USSR.
