2008 is a prime example of something Pat Riley told the Lakers on his first day coaching the team in 1981, "if you're really as good as everyone says you are, you'll win in SPITE of me".

It was always infuriating to see Doc interviewed after a game where he coached badly, he would get extremely offended and immediately start listing off people other than himself who were to blame
The truth is, Doc has always been "players coach", meaning that he let the players decide on the plays and runs and when it's going good, he also looks like a good coach. The problem starts when it's not going good and there's need for adjustment and that's something Doc wasn't capable of doing ever since the Magic days. That's why he has so many losses and I strongly believe if he hadn't won a ring in 08, he'd be out of NBA like 7-8 years ago.
Tbh look how much games it took them to get out of an weak eastern conference, 2008 Celtics that team was too talented to even not be held back by Doc
2008 was also aided by an actual defensive minded assistant coach by the name of Tom Thibodeau who actually does coach.
The truth is you don't know what you are talking about! A player coach is simply a coach that use to play professional bball also; and they understand how it is to be a player 🤦🏾♂️
@@OGMCMLXXI Think you're wrong there. I've heard many times that it means that it means you got his back during fouls and technicals and when the media attacks the superstar and such. I think you're getting mixed up with "player coach" and "player's coach" (Doc is both really), two different meanings.

At this point, Doc's remembered way more for his failures than his 2008 championship. These blown playoff series leads are funny to look at and he's become a meme, but there is definitely an issue with his coaching if this has happened on multiple teams.

He literally milked him in offense and defense (even to pass playmaking to certain degree) and guess what happens next years, McGrady like Garnett was injured. Keep it mind KG was already old carry Wolves alone without any HOF entire decade or more, but T-Mac was still prime. Doc never gave McGrady some help or time to rest. Have u noticed this playoff that he didnt play at all Trezz and Dwayne Dedmon. I know they cant shoot 3s but Trezz effort and Dwayne size could at least protect rim and grab rebounds and worn down Horford and Williams with wrestle and box out.

Well shooting is not everything he played Niang whos so called sniper. But dude bricks last and this playoffs everytime during those runs. Doc is a glorified assistant coach. Great for the locker room and making relationships. But he can't be the guy to get you over the top. The one year he did, Thibs was his assistant and by all accounts made the actual adjustments in-game.
No shame in being an assistant, but it's frustrating how he's consistently been able to be mediocre and still get praised. He is not one of the top coaches all time and the fact that he was ranked as so invalidates the entire list.
Ironically he should be Tyronn Lue's assistant instead of the other way round
So in reality, Thibodeau was the real Celtics’ head coach in 2008

He coached the 8 seeded 48 win Clippers Team back in 2019 with no all-star. Probably one of the highlight of his coaching career aside from the 08.
He's actually very good when he has less talent at his disposal. It's the weirdest thing. I think he realizes he has to coach and suddenly coach's his ass off when he doesn't have his "stars" to go into iso mode with. That's why the Sixers had such a good record this year without Embiid and/or Harden. That's also why that Clipper teams won 48 games and took the Warriors to 6 in the playoffs, and why that lottery projected Magic team went .500 under him.
Well said. But I remember hearing this great line about Doc. He has a high floor and a low ceiling. Meaning that he will overachieve with less talented teams but will not get the job done when he actually has some talent to work with. I always found that pretty interesting.......

his style of coaching works for developing players but not winning at the top to win a ring. The big three celtics team was full of veterans that doesnt need coaching but still lost the next few years because injuries needs adjustments.

He won't because he is incredibly stubborn. After DeAndre Jordan was a -12 in 4 minutes in last year's playoff loss to Miami, Rivers said: "We're going to keep starting him whether you like it or not." He then proceeded to blame the players by saying they wanted him to start DAJ over Paul Reed.

Because he won his chip by letting the big 3 do their thing and then he has used that logic to get close to another chip and then the players fail and he gets another chance and validation

He could say so many things instead. For example, he could say "not always they can travel with the players, there are important games which require isolation" and such stuff. Coach should be smart and diplomatic sometimes, guess that Doc Rivers just wasn't.
Never forget that after the Clippers fired Doc, they immediately made the WCF.

Doc is definitely a one hit wonder in the playoffs but he's also consistent and solid as a regular season games winner for his teams

Player talent carries teams in the regular season. Obviously coaching still matters in the regular season, but you only play each team a few times spread out over months, so talented teams are more able to just outplay their opponents in the regular season. In the playoffs, where you play the same team potentially 7 games in a row, coaching becomes way more important. It's more about moves and countermoves, very specific gameplans based on the other team's personnel and playstyle, and adjustments based on what the other team is doing on a game-to-game basis. Doc's team do well in the regular season because teams with a high level of talent almost guaranteed to have a good record in the regular season regardless of coaching. The playoffs are different, talent alone won't get you all the way.
Doc went straight to head coach from commentary and the only reason he was a coach this long was the Boston big 3

@@jwst8 nah its cuz he had a good reputation with players. Also he started to choke in his clippers days fr and even then the blame wouuld mostly be on the players back then. With the 2018 and 2019 Clips he overachieved. In 2020 he choked but the media mostly blamed PG and his bad chemistry with Doc. Then 2021, you could blame Ben Simmons. 2022 was Harden. And now this year people are starting to just blame Doc cuz he just has been on the wrong side too many times

He kept on playing Harrell over Zubac even though it's obvious that Jokic is eating Harrell's defense alive.
Losing with that 08 Celtics team would have been impossible for nearly anyone. They just had too much talent in one place. We all know Doc keeps getting head coaching jobs partly because of that year, but making the jump to head coach right away didn't do him any long term favors. Had he spent some time as an assistant first and learned from senior coaches, he'd have a lot more knowledge to draw from and be more flexible rather than falling back on old bad habits.

Sometimes I don’t understand how anyone can be head coach in the NBA for this long without even holding down some kind of assistant coaching position first.
He lucked into a coaching job that nobody wanted. A gutted Magic team that just lost both Shaq and Penny and didn't even have a lottery pick.

@@kenrickeason McGrady was a paycheck player who never showed up in the playoffs, Hill was injury prone, and Duncan didn't really want to leave the Spurs.
The year he won coach of the year, other coaches had bigger jumps in terms of wins.

Spot on video. Doc's career arc reminds me a lot of Don Nelson and Lenny Wilkens, where he gets talented teams but can't win it all (except for the Celtics title in '08). I think he needs a break for a year or two to see the game from a different perspective, and then make a coaching comeback from there.
Great points about how stacked that 2008 Boston team was. Wow. So much talent on that team, on the court and on the coaching staff. Doc can get a lot out of non-superstars, but he just doesn't have the skill to outcoach anyone in the clutch. He's charming though. I hope for his sake he takes a few years to be able to reflect on his failures and take accountability. He's like the person who keeps getting into one relationship after another to avoid the grief of the previous relationship🤣

Could you do a coaching history of Larry Brown or Chuck Daly? Both have very interesting coaching history.
Doc is a great regular season coach. His teams almost always win more games than they're projected to. He might be at his best when his stars are injured or when he doesn't have a lot of stars. I think he thrives as the "underdog." He's good at motivating good-but-not-great players to play as a team and be more than the sum of their parts. Think about those early Orlando teams. Or think about that Clippers team with Tobias Harris, Lou Williams, and Montrezl Harrell. They certainly overachieved. But that ability will only take you so far. The playoffs are a different sport. As we've seen from the way Spoelstra has exposed Budenholzer and Mazzulla this year, you need to be able to make on-the-fly adjustments. It's not enough to install a good system and get everyone to play hard.

I saw an interview where Doc tried to justify his coaching by citing his past accolades, specially the one he did with that Magic team that got him COTY. A stark contrast to Coach Pop, who always gives his players the credit, even repeatedly reminding us that he was only working for Tim Duncan....
Tbh, I think that his success as a coach is more in relation to the situation he's had, he's not able to coach up a team like Popovich and Spoelstra can

Great video, as a sixers fan you hit on every point, same play over and over again. Can be dominant in the regular season because Embiid is so good but won't work in the playoffs. Calls for ball movement constantly but it's none built into the offense.
Doc is like Monty Williams because he is friends with players while not holding them accountable
And that is a reason why this type of coaching style mostly results in failure; when you’re unwilling to hold your own players accountable for their poor performances, that enables them to continue playing poor.

Pro Ball is different when it comes to coaching, you must have that ying and that yang to win in the pros..
@@elefanta1278 Yes that is true but the problem with Doc Rivers is that he doesn't know how to make in-game adjustments.. He's the one that also need accountability as well cause the coach is the one leading the team.. Even in Highschool Basketball you must make adjustments or that other varsity team is going to destroy you down the stretch.. The same with College..

I don't know why everybody seems to think Doc is such a good coach. The only time he won a championship, He needed three hall of famers on his roster to get it done.

That 2008 celtics championship was great for Boston, but I think that Doc could have lead the organization to at least an extra title if he made those adjustments

What a crazy journey it’s been just watching Doc, it’s really crazy because If you were watching basketball 10-12 years ago it’s was pretty much unanimous respect for Doc and most people considered him top 10 or at least 12 coach of all time, I’ll admit as a Celtics fan he’ll always have my respect and appreciation, I can’t don’t think I’ve ever seen a coach get as large of a tribute as Doc did when he came back to the td garden, it’s sad to see his fall but he’s still a HOF regardless

As a sixers fan, I don't think Glenn was the reason we lost this series against Boston. Joel and James, point blank let the team down. And our need for an athletic wing or guy who can create his own shot ( which has been a problem well before Glen, thank you management for keeping brett Brown over Jimmy Butler) has been an issue well before the hiring of Glenn.
However, where Glenn lost a lot of fans this season here at least, was his stubbornness to not play the younger guys. And in addition to that, what Rasheed said was correct as well, playing the same guys off the bench ( niang) when they're not producing instead of at least trying something new with a guy who could have given you either much-needed energy or points off the bench is mind boggling. I still think he began to lose a good portion of the fan base after the Atlanta Hawka collapse. That series I put on him more than this recent series. Ben Simmons downfall is well-documented, however what gets ignored is Glenn enabling Ben essentially not to shoot. And throwing old teams unde trhe bus doesnt help either. Basically he wasn't the main reason for the Boston collapse but it's been time for a change. Glenn has to get out of the 2003 mindset
Harden and Embiid deserved part of the blame, but they are not certified winners who knows how to get the job done, that's why Doc was hired in the first place. Embiid mobility was limited and the Celtics were defending with two bigs around the paint, why don't call some plays where Joel could have received the ball in more comfortable spots? Why let him settling for jumpers when he's not 100% confident on his knee injury? That's one, then Harden. Personally I've never like it trading for him (another certified playoff choker) and even if he's still a good player, James isn't a real point guard. He looks out of shape to me, his 33 but he already lost his first step. Harden shooting percentage during the Boston series was awful in the losses, but why Rivers never find a solution for his stars struggles? In Game 7 Tatum was great, he's a streak shooter, maybe a time out during the 3rd quarter could've cool him off. Instead he let the kid kick their asses.
The Sixers real problem is not having a winning culture, getting more people who knows how to win when it matters the better, so Rivers and Harden have to go. Embiid will be under heavy scrutiny next year, if he kept disappearing in the post-season then he can leave too.

Harden was the reason the series went to seven games. He was pretty shite for five of the games, but that's when embiid needs to step up and he never did. The blame needs to fall on your "mvp"
@@feroce82 yeah. I believe Joel will either need to channel an inner Kobe/ giannis ( working hard to improve all of his game ) or pull a PG and admit he can't be the main guy for a chip. And I agree, Glenn should have made adjustments, but at the same time Joel is MVP. Joelle is a great player, however we have the whole him to the same standard we hold LeBron , Kevin, CP3, etc .
@@carbiv The problem with James in the playoffs is tht he has too many situations where he's looking for foul calls rather than being aggressive. He definitely helped us when the first two games of the series, but his play afterwards regressed because I don't think he was being aggressive. If he does return if we get two guys who are three and D players I think he'll do better ( working as a full time of)

The fall of Glenn Doc Rivers was when he told Tim Duncan no wives couldn't travel with the team and screwed up T-Mac time in Orlando he caught lightning in a bottle with 08 Celtics because Ray Allen Kevin Garnett Paul Pierce was hungry to get that 1st championship and most likely would of had a 2nd if Kevin doesn't get injured. But how much would he really have if Kevin had traded to the Lakers. But we all know that wasn't happening. Kevin McHale wasn't trading Garnett to the Celtics' biggest rival. He showed you under the Orlando Magic that he just put the ball in T-Mac hands and had him take the team as far as he could. If Grant Hill was healthy and Tim Duncan was there, they would have won 🏆 but, up 3-1 as soon as the Pistons made adjustments and put Prince on T-Mac, he should have made adjustments but he didn't and they ended losing that series once again he catches lightning in a bottle with the big 3 yea he got the one championship but, also the Lakers weren't fully healthy Andrew went down Pau Gasol got there mid-season so the chemistry wasn't fully there yet. Like I said, Kevin getiing injured, and he didn't make adjustments . They lost in 7, and they got KG back and made it to the finals, but Perkins gets injured, and once again, Rivers didn't make adjustments he goes to the Clippers, where he had his best chances to win and blew 2 3-1leads with two different superstar players game 6 against Houston yall are up 19 how are you letting Josh Smith beat yall one of the worst 3 point shooters in history that was your game and he blew it. Then, with Lenard, you managed to do the samething. Then you go to the 76ers, and the same thing happens. It's you, Rivers. He's pretty much either the Mike Tomlin or Mike McCarthy of the NBA. I'd say Tomlin: Both have been to their respective title appearances twice and have lost and won one. Have had non losing seasons, but have never made it back to the title scene in years. Are players coaches to the wire.

I remember giving him a pass in 2004 and 2009 and 2010 when he had 3-2 leads and had the chance to close it out at home and lost.
After 2020, when he lost another 3-1 lead. I said there is no way he will see another championship. It’s almost like the 08 team of his win in spite of rivers not because of him.
That's a really good coaching list of the 15 best guys but there's a couple in there that I completely objective to Don Nelson was a very difficult guy who had a lot of issues with his players. Doc Rivers is the definition of a rigid coach who probably only succeeded because he always had very talented teams but he didn't succeed the way any of these other guys would have succeeded with those teams and always came up short. Always accept once. Larry Brown was a cutthroat mother effer who would make promises to teams and then bail if the money got better somewhere else. I think that having the best three current coaches is a really cool thing with Steve Kerr, Erik spoelstra and of course Gregg Popovich. The big man Wembanyana from France has gotten perfect situation with a great big man coach in Gregg Popovich. I can't wait to see what the Spurs are going to look like next year.
All those other superstars went on to win after getting angry about their coach being fired, probably because they felt partially responsible for the coach's firing. That probably elevated them to the next level... they felt accountable for someone losing their job, and came back better than ever. I hope Joel does the same... not saying Joel is the reason Doc got fired, just saying that Joel is partly responsible for the playoff losses, and he needs to accept that and be better.
Joel should be motivated by all the heat he's getting while Jokic is 2 games away from a finals berth. He's getting called "Fake MVP" left and right. He needs to make those deep playoff runs we're yet to see where he actually performs at an elevated level, or he'll be remembered as another Carmelo Anthony or Dominique while Jokic chases that all-timers tier.

The excessive obsession of Boston fans with the 2008 team is pretty pathetic. In comparison to other championship-winning teams, that particular one is consistently glorified, and it is undeniably sad how people continue to relive a single championship despite the passage of numerous years. While some of this may be attributed to media bias, the extent to which they cling to that solitary triumph is genuinely pitiful.
As for Doc Rivers' incompetence, the analogy of an employee securing promotions solely based on political prowess, rather than genuine merit, remains a highly fitting comparison.
I think they cling to it so much because the franchise has such a storied history, and that's the only ring a lot fans have been alive for.
I understand the sentiment of looking back at past success fondly, especially when you haven't experienced similar achievements recently. However, what becomes objectively off-putting is the excessive amount of self-celebration in comparison to other championship teams. The excessive presence of documentaries, anniversary events, player reunions, merchandise and memorabilia associated with that particular team is simply cringe-worthy for me. It descends into a realm of sadness, rivaling the nostalgic tales of "back when I was in high school, reigning as the star quarterback on the field."
Being neither a fan of a rival team nor having a strong bias towards the Boston Celtics, I can acknowledge the greatness of the franchise and its numerous exceptional teams throughout history. That said, the 2008 Celtics are the ultimate cringe-lords.

Welcome to the NBA's version of "The Curse of the Bambino". As a Philly Fan I had zero confidence that Doc was going to succeed. Not just because of his past failures which are legion, but as much as I hate to say it but the 76ers are now a "cursed team". The "Curse of the Process" where Sam Hinkie conducted sports treason against the entire fandom of the 76ers for years. Failing your way to success is in no business "a thing". The 76ers did not lower ticket prices during this time period. The purposely traded away good players that any even mediocre GM could had used as a core to build a competitive team. Basketball karma will punish the 76ers and hence their fans for this transgression against all which is good in sports. Trading Jimmy Butler, Ben Simmons, Markelle Fultz and Embiid's constant injuries in crunch time. The basketball Gods are not happy with the 76ers. As a Sixers fan every time I heard an idiot say "Trust the Process" I just shook my head and thought thou hath no idea of what wrath will befall you.

Embiid, Butler, and Simmons never would have even come here were it not for the Process. Is the Process a success? No. But without it, the Sixers would still he losers mired in mediocrity(or worse) instead of being on the cusp of making the East finals.
The fact that Doc Rivers has received offer after offer for head coaching positions despite his abysmal track record clearly showing he's not fit to coach a "championship favorite" team while Mark Jackson laid the defensive foundation for the Warriors dynasty and hasn't been employed in 10 years is revolting.

Mark Jackson got the Warriors to the 2nd round in 2013 but they regressed in 2014, falling in the 1st round to the Clippers. Jackson was out, Kerr was in. Kerr's changes (adding Green and Barnes as starters, demoting Lee and Iggy) made all the difference in unlocking the championship in 2015.
