    I actually really enjoyed this one. It had a very odd, hypnotic quality to it. Once I got caught up in its rhythm I was hooked. It’s definitely very confusing and flawed, but I immediately wanted to deep dive into its ideas when it was over.

    I absolutely LOVED this movie! It's one of the ones that I liked even more in the following day or two as I mulled it over. I found it very symbolic and worked on so many levels.
    The term "designer cancer" I think will stay with me forever.
    I saw it in the theater by myself, and there were only, maybe 8 other people in the theater with me. At the end of it one guys literally stood up, turned to look at all of us, and hollered, "Can anybody PLEASE tell me what in the fuck we just watched?!??" Lol!! So I totally get that it is not for everybody.

    It’s great hearing your review, I really loved it! I think it was definitely very cerebral and more so sci-fi like you said. I don’t know if seeing it in theaters helped but was very entranced and invested in everything happening, I felt the opposite like I wanted more of everything cus I was so interested in all the concepts they brought up. I love the look and design of the movie, the world building was wonderful for me, but I could definitely see this as a book because it felt like we’re just seeing a tiny little slice of what this reality is like.
    ALSO its interesting you say it feels outdated because idk if you know this but it’s actually a script he wrote over 20 years ago and he said he didn’t change a single word when he adapted it! So that helps explain it. I didn’t really feel that way, but I do wish he would’ve done another pass thru just to freshen up the old script, I wonder how the movie would be different had he done that.

    Love your honest and thoughtful reviews, Emma; definitely keep 'em coming! Hope you're better soon.
    As for "Crimes of the Future", I absolutely loved it, especially once I stripped the film of its advertised expectations and just allowed it to exist for what it is: a 100% Cronenberg drama that's closer to a blending of Samuel Beckett and William S. Burroughs than it is to anything that exists in the horror genre. Honestly, the biggest fault of this film is the way in which it was advertised; it's simply not a horror or traditional sci-fi movie and because of this essentially false advertising it's drawing a crowd that it's not intended for, which is, unfortunately, drawing its rating way down. This should have been released as an art-house film, pure and simple, and not as a commercial one. In that setting with that mindset, it's a whole different experience. It took me two viewings to realize that. And, given the myriad of things that you had to say about it without spoiling a thing, I'm guessing a second viewing might leave you with a different opinion. If not, it's still all good; Cronenberg certainly isn't looking to attract a ton of new viewers, that's for sure, and I don't see him getting more commercial any time soon judging from the synopsis of his next film, LOL. Be well.

    The world-building is top-tier and it is the best part of the movie. I never found it dull or uninteresting. However the movie did not really delve into it the way I wanted. All the body horror stuff, I've seen it in the trailer, so there was nothing cool to surprise me with. I felt kinda cold after watching it.

    Cronenberg the younger, Brandon, really brought the sci-fi horror with Possessor.
    I found Kristen Stewart less robotic than usual.
    I watched this review in July, before I saw the movie. I’m glad I did. The original 1970 version of this film (not a fan), did not really prepare me for the 2022 version. I agree it is absolutely more sci-fi (Existenz) than horror.
    Knowing that, I enjoyed it much more than I would have.
    Although, the murder of the child upset me ; and the fact that Vigo Mortensen‘s character was constantly suffering pain but could not experience/feel it at the same time left me confused. I thought it was interesting. We all have very high expectations for everything Cronenberg

    I loved that it took me back in time to 90’s style Arthouse films. Directors such as Greenaway, films like Brazil, the cook the thief, city of the lost children etc. just a great movie exploring futuristic concepts.

    • @spookyastronauts
      @spookyastronauts  Pƙed rokem +2

      Wait? What did you find similar with the cook and thief? I thought this was the exact opposite. That film has wide sweeping shots of the set with crowded art design and people, I felt this was opposite, very minimal and quiet.

      @dukeon Pƙed rokem

      I was just going to say that watching some of the film footage in this review *immediately* brought Brazil to mind. Even though that was a Gilliam film I immediately got the same vibe. Brazil is one of those films I’d rate highly but probably won’t watch again, as it left me depressed. Maybe it’s why I’m not keen on Cronenberg? His films usually leave me feeling pretty pessimistic about humanity. We all have our own tastes don’t we!

  • @Houldey
    @Houldey Pƙed rokem +6

    I've only watched it once so far, but I did like it a lot - I spent a lot of time trying to get an idea of what was going on, as well as trying to understand the world and its strange systems / organisations / ideals. I think the ball was dropped a little bit in piecing together the intro sequence with the rest of the movie, but it did come together in the end and whilst you're right in saying its definitely a slow burn - for most it wont be satisfying that the slow burn doesn't really go anywhere, and you're left to come to your own conclusions. I did enjoy it though overall and do for sure plan on rewatching it, though its hard to really recommend it to anyone without knowing their taste intimately lol. Its a movie for a VERY specific subset of people I guess hah.
    *edit* Oh, and i really don't understand why there was that fuss about people walking out of it, I can only guess that the end of the opening scene upset some people? Seems a bit of a lame reason for a walkout mind.

    • @brentulstad3275
      @brentulstad3275 Pƙed rokem +1

      I would guess that the "walk-outs" might be in part due to the son's live autopsy and nearly full display of that. As well as earlier in the film Kristen Stewart's character mentions how "surgery is the new sex." Then they showcase that with the child's corpse. It is unsettling and disturbing but intentionally so, and done in a cold matter of fact way, but not in a tantalizing or arousing manner of course. You'd think most people going to see this would have some awareness or nuanced perspective on tough visualizations but every subject can hit an audience in very different ways. I appreciate and admire David Cronenberg for still having the balls and cinematic skills to go for a unique vision that is potentially going to cross a line or upset people today, where so much has been done and viewers are desensitized to some degree, he's managed to stick to his artistic & creative vision for better or worse, but uncompromising and tough as it might be.

    I felt mostly the same as you spookyastronauts. It was a letdown for sure, especially if you had high hopes ( like I did as well ). I think the biggest problem with the movie is that, while I don't think that the filmmakers messed anything up compared to what they set out to make, but the finished product just didn't connect as well as it might have seemed on paper. It would be interesting to see what someone like Alex Garland might have done with the same material.

      Actually I'd argue that its "gore" was one of the best parts of the film - just tasteful enough to be titilating without being over the top. The issue I had was that the look and feel of the film felt too much like a glorified soap opera..with the artificiality of the camera, the lighting, the sets, the props. You could argue that this was all a symbolic byproduct of them living in a world full of "plastic-eaters" - an allegorical stage play intentionally masquerading as film - but it still took me out of the viewing experience. Again great concepts, but something as simple as shooting on a grainier filmstock mightve worked wonders for me.

    I think you’re dead on about the themes of performance and desensitization, but I actually really loved this. Maybe it’s because I watched it after watching Flux Gourmet (another horror movie about the absurdity of performance art), but I found it to be really timely and involving, particularly given the obvious trans metaphor at the story’s heart. Great ending too.

    As a long time Cronenberg fan, seeing all of his films and collecting Cronenberg related books, etc, I was very disappointed. There were too many side characters (the cop, the pair of pod technicians) that were underdeveloped, too many ideas talked about with no follow through. The idea of surgery as a fashion statement was better handled in the Soska sisters "American Mary." That was in imperfect film, with a rushed ending, but Katharine Isabelle gave a phenomenal performance. Hey, she's Canadian; Cronenberg should hire her for one of his films. I may see "Crimes Of The Future" again, at some point, but it was a letdown.

    I appreciate your review and thoughts on this film. I can understand your disappointment on this one, but cannot agree completely. I saw it in the theater a few weeks ago and it was great just to see a Cronenberg bodyhorror live in the cinema so I had that excitement as well as the previous year of anticipation built up. It actually looked and felt very of this moment or even ahead of the time. Pace and tone were very slowly unsettling and could have benefited from a bit more tension or suspense but I wasn't at all expecting a thriller or any out right action. More the meditation on the subject matter and possible existential issues of our future. I do think films like this need time to set in properly and multiple viewings so I'm very hesitant to say how I feel overall. But definitely not a crowd pleaser, not a film that compromises to cater to the audience, any audience but especially the wider range of casual viewers. ABSOLUTELY the movie that ONLY David Cronenberg could make! And if anything I'm fascinated by and appreciate that aspect. Was probably as much or more disappointed with Garland's MEN. But very excited to see the next feature by Brandon Cronenberg as Possessor [Uncut] is still one of the best Scifi-horror experiences I've had in recent years.

    I’ll never understand how anyone who enjoys any Paranormal Activity movie, could actually say that this movie was outdated. To each their own though, as I often agree with Emma on movies.
    I really don’t understand how folks aren’t seeing the plot and meaning behind the movie. I understand folks thinking it’s too slow, but that’s how most Cronenberg is received, unless he purposely adds action scenes.
    The ideas and concepts are right there. We’ve created a world that is so artificial, why wouldn’t our bodies begin to evolve into something that could live off of that artificialness? once all the biological life is either gone, irradiated or so poisonous it’s inedible, it’s one of the only ways we’d survive. Then the surgery as Art idea, has been a concept in different wsys, in many of his films.
    Ever see Dead Ringers, Crash, Videodrome, even the Fly?
    Man crating something artificial, which then becomes part of said human, or the purposeful destruction of the flesh to have artificial parts grafted onto oneself, and of course the blending of tech with biological machinery, are all concepts he’s threaded throughout his oeuvre.

    I saw this in theaters last month, Cronenberg being my favorite director. I think I liked it a tad more than you, but I can totally see where you're coming from. It feels like a mix of old Cronenberg and new Cronenberg. I was psyched that he was returning to his body horror roots, but...yeah, the film is very slow and just bursting with the pseudo-intellectual conversations that really weighed down his "Cosmospolis." And aside from a few scenes, I also didn't think it was nearly as gory as it was made out to be (probably didn't help that I was prepared for the worst). That said, I liked it, but didn't love it. I'd like to see it again to see if my opinion of it has improved, but... On your scale, I'd probably give it a 6/10...but my girlfriend (who I dragged along with me, much to her chagrin) was pretty much bored out of her mind, so it's definitely not for everyone.

    My thoughts on "Crimes" is more of a deep-dive into the metaphorical meanings within Cronenberg's on-the-nose, satirical (albeit horrific) and sometimes humorous view of modern-day technology (ex: eating chair, sleeping bed, autopsy bed), exhibitionism and voyeurism (ex: Saul, Caprice, Timlin, two women with drills), pop culture (ex: Klinik/Ear Man, others), celebrity status (Saul and Caprice), and ultimately the "plastic" society that we have become (ex: plastic eaters, non-plastic eaters, and those "evolving" into eating plastic). There are also the "policing agencies" (Cope, Wippet, Timlin) that try to regulate and/or terminate humanities permanent decline into a meaningless existence of seeking out ever-greater, "shocking" sensualities (ex: government's attempts to regulate social media and the moral decline of society).
    The story clearly identifies "plastic" as the synthetic, cheap, easily consumed and digested content in social media (I think of "Barbie Girl" by Aqua, Madonna's "Material Girl"). Each of the main characters is participating in the so-called "art" in some way with a brief glimpse of a "normal person" who dies from eating "plastic".
    The boy Brecken, from the outset, has already "evolved" into a full plastic eater. The mother, representing parents of young "social media artists" today, smothers him. This represents the consequences of parents allowing their children to consume and produce cheap, easy to consume exhibitionism eventually leading them to be killed by it (ex: kids being killed by their stalkers, older men being fans of young girls) as if the parent was the actual murderer.
    Through the entire story, the main character Saul resists "evolving" into a plastic eater (ex: "tumor-like organs" that grow inside him = the cancers of society) using alien-looking tech just to eat and sleep (Ex: cpap, hospital surgical devices, feeding tubes, mechanised beds etc). Finally, after just giving in to "evolving" into a plastic eater does he find complete contentment and peace. However, never does he realize that his "painless" exhibitionism is the very cause of his morphing into a plastic eater; he's now desensitised to it all.
    Along the way, we also meet two woman voyeurists who drill holes into people's heads representing the mindless, intellegence draining people of CZcams Channels and pornography; they create content that displays to everyone their so-called "inner beauty" but is secretely "horrific" for us to watch, and we can't turn our eyes away (ex: Adrienne, Ear Man, zipper device, etc.). In addition, Ear Man (Klinik) demonstrates how even the hippocritical Producer of his "Art" (ex: the music and entertainment industry) can be the very one who exploits the financial successes but joins the "popular" view of hating it (ex: via anonymous likes, dislikes, etc.).
    There are many more metaphorical references throughout the story and Cronenberg uses the genre as a warning of the future "horrors" of becoming "Plastic Eaters". Cronenberg asks us If we are disgusted by what we are watching and thus why are we not disgusted by what we "consume" in today's media? He suggests that if we are not disgusted by what we're watching, we're already a plastic eater. Indeed, ultimately society will become senseless, meaningless, painless, completely devoid of the characteristics that make us human if we don't stop eating plastic both metaphorically (ex: social media, empty entertainment, exhibitionism, voyeurism, pop culture, celebrity status, etc.) and physically (ex: oceans being full of plastic: fish eat it, we eat the fish). Neither has any nutritional value and will evenually destroy us and society metaphorically, physically, and socially.

      I got and appreciated the allegorical symbolism. It was interesting to think about these concept, but there weren't enough stakes present to carry the thread of the character's journey forward fully. The world and its philosophies were compelling but not so much the story.
      Not to mention the fact that the presentation felt to clean and artificial for my tastes. Which was ironically fitting since the point wss that they've become such a plastic-eating society metaphorically, but nonetheless the camera work, the lighting, the set design, and the props all felt like a gloried soap opera.

    You did have expectations.. you thought it would be his old school body horror style.. I went into it just hoping for a good movie, and I thought it was absolutely brilliant. It’s not horror for the sake of horror, or a movie for the sake of imagery. It had a voice, it has meaning, it has depth, and it’s only boring if you don’t allow your mind it wander and imagine and dream. This movie stayed with me for weeks afterwards, continually rethinking the moral implications, the world that was built, the why’s and how’s of that world.. it wasn’t as intense or horrific as some of his other stuff, but it has power if you let it take you.

    What you said about audience desensitisation toward horror and traditionally taboo/upsetting images seems pretty on the ball to me -- especially when you put the idea up against the script. When Saul went to see the man with all the ears perform, it was mentioned that the man's dancing was more effective than his body alterations since the ears didn't actually work. The guy literally sewed his eyes and mouth shut and grew a bunch of ears but the audience thought it was too tame. On top of that, Caprice and Saul both talk about how the 'live autopsy' could add an edge to their show that they've apparently been needing for a while to spice things up. Cronenberg was definitely trying to hold a mirror up to the kind of people who watch his films and others like them, I think!

    This is "Painkillers" finally made flesh, with a new (old) name. He's been talking about it for two decades. Being honest, even being a Cronie this was one movie I was happy he never made specifically because of the surgery sequences he was promising. "Organ play", very apt phrase, waaaaay not into seeing that. Highly squeamish over that.
    Circumstances forced me to miss this at the cinema, so it'll be a blind buy on disc. Expectations are...well, they were already mixed. Intrigued but not exactly excited.

    I felt I didn't need to relate or need a 'main' character. I'ts meant to be alienating and present a fantasy made from our own obsession and maybe even disrespect for our bodies. Although I felt I watched the beginning of a Limited series. So intriguing but did need expansion where it could maybe become more character driven with a more climactic resolution.

    Surgery porn as dystopian high art? Great synopsis and analysis. I got into it for it's originality. The flow was rather kinky and brooding. Questing for the ultimate subversive art and individual expression is a theme playing throughout. Definitely can be seen as satire and rich in metaphor. The eerie performances can be entertaining because of the appeal of Lea Seydoux, Kristen Stewart, Viggo and others. If the things Spookyastronauts pointed out about the film piques your curiosity, it might be worth a go. Desensitized to the same old same old? I extrapolated that a character continues the (r)evolution that started the plot in motion. Maybe.... It opened up a lot of ideas on the state of things to come after woke culture.

    I was ceremoniously disappointed as well. As a lifelong Cronenberg fan, the most shocking thing was it's complete lack of story or characters to latch on to. Vigo spends the majority of his screentime immobile, whispering, and bored. Lea isn't much better, but at least she walks around the four sets a bit. It's littered with references to David's own career, some blatant and some subtle, but the totality of these nods don't amount to anything in a film that has very little to say or show of the world it inhabits. It almost feels like that fan film I was worried his son, Brandon's first film, Antiviral might have been, but thankfully that one kinda had something new to say.
