I love that they didn’t translate the Romanian for the audience either! Really puts you in her shoes in an even deeper way. I also loved that they got curtains after moving in and didn’t even mention it as a plot point. I appreciated that so much because it’s super frustrating in most of these type of movies they could just get curtains?? But they knocked that out right away and the plot continued on just fine after making that common sense choice. Watching this movie alone in the theater definitely hit different though!

I don’t know if this film just resonated with me differently but I found this film really, really terrifying. I didn’t find the movie slow at all, I felt like it expertly built the tension and I could feel my anxiety building throughout. There wasn’t a moment in it I was bored and I was very invested in the story. Completely agree it is very Hitchcock and simple and serious in its execution. You could also really feel her isolation and loneliness which contributed to the anxiety and “chilled” feeling I got while watching it (if that makes sense). I saw it in the theater and really loved it. One of the best horror films in recent memory for me.

when a silent and "slow" movie is constantly creating increasing tension, without a ton of action, it is a great achievement. the moment when that weird dude suddenly was standing in front of HER door with the officer on his side was pure desperation. that is psychological horror, which the viewer also felt. I liked that movie very much.

ALL of it was gorgeous, with top-notch acting from all players. NOT having subtitles whilst being immersed in Romanian serves as a direct line to Julia's experience, which ONLY heightens the tension, the anxiety, et al. SO f*cking-good. Re-watching SOON."

Lol, I just finished watching it right now after your recommendation on the Half Year Check In, and your video was the first thing that popped up on my homepage!!! I still have the tab open and everything! Definitely a hilarious coincidence after seeing a whole movie about suspicious coincidences...
I very much enjoyed it. It's not super scary, but it does feel eery, specially if you're someone who has dealt with harassment before (which unfortunately is the majority of females like me). Being so rooted in reality and having no supernatural elements does make up for a suspenseful story... and hopefully the end will be a bit catharthic too.
Thanks once again for such a great recommendation Emma - I think I've seen half of the movies you suggested on your Half Year Check In already. So far my favorite is "You Won't be Alone". I look forward for the others!

Great review, was so masterfully done. Gave me Rear Window vibes. But how did nobody mention that on the subway Juila was starring at the grocery bag, which looked like it had a head inside. You could vaguely see the outline of a face (Irina's) through the plastic which completely freaked her out. Such a terrifying moment done perfectly. The actor who played the villian is so damn good at doing so in every movie he's in. Glad she got him in the end, was way more satisfying. Bravo!

I started watching you with the Mike Flanagan piece - he is a brilliant director. I like the three ways you rate horror movies. I like that you watch movies with your dog. I watch them with two cats who lay in front of the monitor and get up a stretch blocking the screen at the most inappropriate times or try a drag the keyboard from under its' protective cover to create destruction on the keys and will get very intense staring at the outside window . I like Maika Monroe ever since 'The Guest.' I like old horror movies. Every year or so I bring out a film like, 'The Spiral Staircase,' or 'The Uninvited,' because these films as so well made, they can be enjoyed even if you know what is going to happen. I seldom watch modern horror movies more than once. You have convinced me to watch, 'Watcher.'

I'm Romanian, born and raised in Bucharest, and you have asked if watching the movie has been a different experience for me. Well, I related to the main character because I felt the isolation during my long stay in a foreign country (other than Romania) where I actually knew the language quite well. Romanians' curiosity was well reflected in the movie. Flats belonging to the old blocks of flats are usually not as big as in the movie, but in the newly constructed blocks, they can be. Generally speaking, most of Bucharest is not scary, just a limited number of neighborhoods. I can't even remember when's the last time Bucharest had a serial killer.
What I also noticed in this movie is that the non-Romanian actors either pronounce very well the Romanian words, or at least they do their best to do so. I cannot say the same about other movies, one of them being Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). In fact, might be that Watcher has the best spoken Romanian language by the foreign actors amongst all the foreign movies where Romanian is spoken.
All in all, loved the movie, although the ending made me wonder if there was something I missed during watching it.
If you have any more questions related to my movie experience, please come back to me.

I'm gonna watch this tonight! Have you seen And Soon the Darkness from 1970? It's about two English women biking through France, and one of them disappears. It's one of my favourite thrillers because so much tension comes from her not being able to communicate with people; it creates this intense claustrophobia and helplessness that the audience feels right along with her. This sounds like it might have some of that feel, so I'm really excited!

I stumbled across this movie after seeing my favorite British actor of the week (joke) Burn Gorman was in it, coming from someone who's used to him playing roles like Owen Harper in Torchwood and Hermann in Pacific Rim, creeped me out the most along with the slow build ups and the feeling of being a fish out of water with the main character. Genuinely was on edge for the entire movie and use of no subtitles but getting a general understanding of whats going on when people around her were speaking Romanian helped a lot. I didn't set a bar too high or low for this movie but it knocked out whatever bar I had for it if I did. Burn's deep voice and his not natural accent sold the last half for me and I wonder why he doesn't have any voice work roles that arent a dead MMO under his belt when he can convey such great work. It's for sure gonna be a rewatched movie in the future

That’s crazy I literally just finished this film and I look up and you uploaded your review lol. I loved everything about this film though the character made some questionable choices. Other than that it’s the type of psychological horror that I love to watch. I didn’t really enjoy “Woman in the Window” but this kept me glued to the screen.

I loved this movie, I honestly never recognized it as a slow-burn while watching it because I was continuously engaged with the slow building of tension throughout, and it's held all throughout up until the very end. *spoilers* I absolutely hated the husband Francis and how he discredited and doubted her. It's also interesting that the only person that got her and understood her was another woman, Irina, and the moment Julia couldn't find Irina was a tipping point, because now she was completely and utterly alone. I also think it says a lot how the creep utilized the police, structures that doubted Julia when she was in fear.

I was never a big fan of hers before, though I always appreciated her film choices. This movie made me a believer in her. She was wonderful in it.

I though this movie was great, it definitely slow and it's not for everyone just because of the slow-pacing, but man this was one of the most intriguing movies i've seen this year and Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman were fantastic in the lead roles. It was also such a well made, well shot movie, my grade for Watcher is an A-

As a Romanian, I was very excited to see a horror movie filmed in good old Bucharest featuring Maika and Murphy from Love. I am also a big fan of slow burners and Rear Window type scenarios.
Unfortunately, this movie left me feeling rather uninspired and bored. The tension never built up and the story and characters were underwritten and underdeveloped. I kept waiting on Maika’s backstory into why she has ptsd as I felt she acted like a victim from the beginning. I kept waiting for a plot twist to happen, but nothing ever did. It was very bland and depressing.
I quite enjoyed the silhouette of Mr Weber from the window and from afar, and the « not revealing his face » until the very end. Maika’s wardrobe and makeup were very classy and went well with the vintage architecture of Bucharest.
Understanding what was being said might’ve played against me here; I understood when the tv reporter said « a woman had been found butchered »; when the husband left out the « butchered » part, I thought for sure there is some past trauma here and he’s shielding her from it, as she’s fragile
.but nope
no backstory. He believes she’s just your typical hysterical woman I guess. Quite annoyed 😒. Many things made little sense or just never built up to their full potential. Very disappointed. 5,5/10

Most of the time, I watched your reviews first before watching the movie, so I was very intrigued by this film. I also gave it 7/10 because I felt this movie is missing something remarkable in order to give it a perfect score. I love Jules' character. She tries to survive to that sociopath by her own which is admirable because she was alone. I hate her husband, so selfish thinking about himself and his work. He didn’t care about his wife at all pretending she was imaging everything. The watcher obviously is frustrated with his life. He has to take care about his old father which is something that bothers him a lot. It took me by surprise the end because I was 100% sure Jules would not make it, however, there is a clue when she is crawling on the floor she sees the drawer where Irina's gun is kept.

I love a slow burn rear window is one of my favorite movies but I do think we should’ve had more scenes where we felt like maybe she’s right when she feels watched I feel like we should’ve thought we where paranoid with her more I think I imagine that could’ve been resolved in about 20 more mins(like the Romanian not being translated was perfect to feel out of place like her as a American)& more of a score to build tension the 6/10 for me with my first watch

I just finished watching the movie. To be honest, I'm Romanian and I didn't really get the feeling of isolation since I could understand everything that was going on. I do have to say that Karl Glusman spoke pretty good Romanian for this role. Most of the time when they make actors try to speak it I can't understand a word. If I have to be picky they only made one mistake to tie it in to the opening scene. When they first get to their apartment the girl tries to say the apartment is "frumoasa" and the caretaker doesn't correct her despite the fact that it's the wrong declination. Apartment is a masculine noun in Ro, the right for would be "frumos" but I understand that they wanted to tie it to the taxi ride. The set design (?) Is also pretty good. There's a scene where Karl's character gives the gf a flower telling her it's to signal spring. That's spot on, that flower in Ro is considered as announcing springs beginning. Also, the TV station playing is a real TV station. Honestly, I thought the killer was someone else since the building administration was speaking a bit weird when she let them in the apartment but I think that might have just been the script.
