The scene on the subway when she notices whatâs in the plastic bag is TOP TIER horror/suspense.
What's in the plastic bag? I couldnt figure that out, a hand?
@@paulzenco6182 the head of Irina her neighbor
@@musicollection133 bruh I thought it was a jar of pickles
Just watched! Glad someone else finally pointed out the head in the bag, was such a huge and terrifying moment!
Also because you don't know what she is seeing is real
I love that they didnât translate the Romanian for the audience either! Really puts you in her shoes in an even deeper way. I also loved that they got curtains after moving in and didnât even mention it as a plot point. I appreciated that so much because itâs super frustrating in most of these type of movies they could just get curtains?? But they knocked that out right away and the plot continued on just fine after making that common sense choice. Watching this movie alone in the theater definitely hit different though!
I legit was screaming GET CURTAINS the whole time up until they actually did lol
I love how she realized they were making fun of her after you as audience knows as much as her
I donât know if this film just resonated with me differently but I found this film really, really terrifying. I didnât find the movie slow at all, I felt like it expertly built the tension and I could feel my anxiety building throughout. There wasnât a moment in it I was bored and I was very invested in the story. Completely agree it is very Hitchcock and simple and serious in its execution. You could also really feel her isolation and loneliness which contributed to the anxiety and âchilledâ feeling I got while watching it (if that makes sense). I saw it in the theater and really loved it. One of the best horror films in recent memory for me.
Yeah people are just used to very fast paced horror movies that donât actually build any tension. This movie felt like a horror movie from the 70âs
I actually felt the same watching it. It was terrifying throughout and i could actually feel the anger towards her husband. I saw everyone's reviews and thought maybe i was terrified because of my past experiences and experiences with creepy people, but glad someone else liked it too.
when a silent and "slow" movie is constantly creating increasing tension, without a ton of action, it is a great achievement. the moment when that weird dude suddenly was standing in front of HER door with the officer on his side was pure desperation. that is psychological horror, which the viewer also felt. I liked that movie very much.
I honestly didn't realize how slow the film was, I was engaged the entire time, the sound design and score is amazing
Also really enjoyed a lot of the shots
I loved this movie! The fact that you can step into her shoes, especially not understanding the language is brilliant in my opinion. I saw in the theater and I know is slow but I was into it the whole time. Great movie!
Thatâs awesome, glad you loved it
Look at the book "Men, Women and Chainsaws.
It's about the "male gaze"
It's a bit old but excellent
âCleanse your horror paletteâ is such a brilliant way to put it. Yeah, I really appreciated how straight forward and non flashy the film was. Also, itâs always fun to try to figure where the story is going and Iâm happy to report that I got it wrong!
Watched it last night also. Great atmosphere with quite an ending. I love a good apartment building horror
Agreed!
I got early Polanski vibes, in addition to Hitchcock, from this one. A lonely woman who is gaslighted/toyed with by a stranger. Watcher has a moody and cold tone that only helps you identify more with Maika Monroe's character.
I really liked this movie! I found it really unsettling how isolated and vulnerable she was, especially with her not speaking the language. Genius!
Really liked this one. I'm excited to see what Maika Monroe does next. She really carried this film.
I'm a gigantic horror fan and I stumbled upon this movie last night, I decided to watch it with no expectations or even seeing the trailer not expecting anything, and I honestly thought it was one of the best scary movies I've seen in a long time. Just the way it was filmed, the acting, the scenery, the way it played out, just absolutely loved it. I seriously give it a 10/10 and I got high standards.
Same. I thought the big reveal was going to be that the guy was blind.
I thought the guy was going to be blind lol. I thought that was going to be the payoff. But remember when the husband friends said â I hear youâre an actor â ? That played off real good towards the end.
I loved it! Maika Monroe is sensational as Julia, which made me realize she's quite an underrated actress. Feeling her paranoia, frustration and isolation made my skin crawl most of the time.
i'm BACK, and i've written my review for it on Shudder:
"yes, we've seen "Rear Window", and appreciate the nod to "Wait Until Dark", but the cinematography, the wardrobe, the music of "Watcher" ... ALL of it was gorgeous, with top-notch acting from all players. NOT having subtitles whilst being immersed in Romanian serves as a direct line to Julia's experience, which ONLY heightens the tension, the anxiety, et al. SO f*cking-good. Re-watching SOON."
Iâm Romanian and I definitely felt frustrated when her husbandâs coworkers made insensitive jokes. U donât really need to know the language in order to get the vibe that people are talking about u. But this film was definitely a W for me. The grandmotherâs acting was very cartoonish to be honest but the rest was really great.
Thanks for that info! I think the grandmas acting worked better for those who couldnât understand haha
Iâve been waiting and hoping for you to cover this. Psych horror/thrillers are always my favorite, and once I heard Maika Monroe was cast it was over for me lol. Been following her career since It Follows, sheâs a great horror lead. Canât wait to see this!
Yeah sheâs awesome! Hope you love it
I loved the film up until the final shot. It seemed tacked on just to give the audience closure (not every film needs closure). Plus, *SPOILER ALERT*, there's no way she could have survived that much blood loss, especially from her carotid artery. I thought her husband was going to end the Watcher's killing spree. But either way, Maika Monroe was outstanding as was the rest of the cast.
Agreed. Great movie up until the final scene. Shame
chosing not to show burn goreman except in blurry shots and only partial shots of his face is such a great idea. as someone who lived abroad, it really nails the feeling of being alone and in unfamiliar places and how that can scare you.
Watcher was so good I did a double feature night with going to see Watcher and Crimes Of The Future in Cinemark and so many more people were genuinely on edge during Watcher than Crimes Of The Future.
Youâre so lucky! We arenât getting either in cinemas
OMG I did a DIY double feature of these two as well and it was great. However I was the only person in my theater for Watcher, which made me way more on edge especially during *that scene* I had to turn around and check behind me.
@@limetreess would have be a scare of epic proportions if a strange man đ came and sat behind you in that theatre of empty seats.
Hi Emma! I watched this movie last night and I absolutely loved every second of it. I didn't find it to be too slow at all. It really unnerved me and got under my skin in all the best ways. And I loved how the film toyed with our minds and expectations throughout. And it did a great job putting us in her shoes/mindset. Loved the way it was filmed and the cinematography as well. Five star thriller for me! They don't make them like this anymore.
Yayy! Perfect timing, I've been waiting to see this for a few weeks and it's finally available in Canada on VOD. going to watch it later today!
I liked. A slow burn thriller done right. Much better than the girl in the window/train. Maika Monroe is great. Also, "Chekhov's gun", right?
Lol, I just finished watching it right now after your recommendation on the Half Year Check In, and your video was the first thing that popped up on my homepage!!! I still have the tab open and everything! Definitely a hilarious coincidence after seeing a whole movie about suspicious coincidences...
I very much enjoyed it. It's not super scary, but it does feel eery, specially if you're someone who has dealt with harassment before (which unfortunately is the majority of females like me). Being so rooted in reality and having no supernatural elements does make up for a suspenseful story... and hopefully the end will be a bit catharthic too.
Thanks once again for such a great recommendation Emma - I think I've seen half of the movies you suggested on your Half Year Check In already. So far my favorite is "You Won't be Alone". I look forward for the others!
Emma, you are a household name at my place. Love watching your channel grow over the years.
& Always thankful for your content on the best genre of film đ€đŒđč
You got me interested in this movie, can't wait to watch it
Hello from Romania! â€â€â€đčđ©đčđ©
Hello!!
Great review, was so masterfully done. Gave me Rear Window vibes. But how did nobody mention that on the subway Juila was starring at the grocery bag, which looked like it had a head inside. You could vaguely see the outline of a face (Irina's) through the plastic which completely freaked her out. Such a terrifying moment done perfectly. The actor who played the villian is so damn good at doing so in every movie he's in. Glad she got him in the end, was way more satisfying. Bravo!
Really enjoyed this one. Glad you got access to it, at last! A back to basics thriller, in a good way.
This is definitely going on my watchlist now! Iâm so happy you covered it!
Thanks Kendra!
I loved it! I was trying to find the subtitles but realized there were none so we felt as uneasy and clueless like the main character did! The guy was extremely unnerving as well amazing acting from everyone!
I started watching you with the Mike Flanagan piece - he is a brilliant director. I like the three ways you rate horror movies. I like that you watch movies with your dog. I watch them with two cats who lay in front of the monitor and get up a stretch blocking the screen at the most inappropriate times or try a drag the keyboard from under its' protective cover to create destruction on the keys and will get very intense staring at the outside window . I like Maika Monroe ever since 'The Guest.' I like old horror movies. Every year or so I bring out a film like, 'The Spiral Staircase,' or 'The Uninvited,' because these films as so well made, they can be enjoyed even if you know what is going to happen. I seldom watch modern horror movies more than once. You have convinced me to watch, 'Watcher.'
I'm Romanian, born and raised in Bucharest, and you have asked if watching the movie has been a different experience for me. Well, I related to the main character because I felt the isolation during my long stay in a foreign country (other than Romania) where I actually knew the language quite well. Romanians' curiosity was well reflected in the movie. Flats belonging to the old blocks of flats are usually not as big as in the movie, but in the newly constructed blocks, they can be. Generally speaking, most of Bucharest is not scary, just a limited number of neighborhoods. I can't even remember when's the last time Bucharest had a serial killer.
What I also noticed in this movie is that the non-Romanian actors either pronounce very well the Romanian words, or at least they do their best to do so. I cannot say the same about other movies, one of them being Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). In fact, might be that Watcher has the best spoken Romanian language by the foreign actors amongst all the foreign movies where Romanian is spoken.
All in all, loved the movie, although the ending made me wonder if there was something I missed during watching it.
If you have any more questions related to my movie experience, please come back to me.
Interesting perspective - thanks for sharing!
I literally just finished it too. I really liked it. Very Hitchcockian. Best Maika Monroe performance ever imo.
I watched it with subtitles and barely had the sound on. My husband was sleeping, and I wanted to watch a movie before bed without waking him. I loved it, and I felt very lost in conversations when they wouldn't translate it. I really like that this version kept the husband mostly in the dark.
You nailed it as being a palate cleanser of sort, it's basic in it's approach but expertly directed, and downright creepy! Rarely I get uncomfortable watching a movie ( well maybe The Sadness đ ) but the realism of Watcher makes it even more believable. Just the thought alone, "Are you sure someone isn't watching you, right now?.." .Skin crawling.
Yahhhhhh. Emma with the darkest eyes and horror reviews! X 4:33am Victoria here. Just what I need...gonna watch Watcher today.
At first I felt the movie was too slow but loved the ending and thought it had a great payoff.
I liked it. Everyone was great, but Burn was the crux for me. Brilliant actor !
I'm gonna watch this tonight! Have you seen And Soon the Darkness from 1970? It's about two English women biking through France, and one of them disappears. It's one of my favourite thrillers because so much tension comes from her not being able to communicate with people; it creates this intense claustrophobia and helplessness that the audience feels right along with her. This sounds like it might have some of that feel, so I'm really excited!
Hi Emma, Truly appreciate your very thoughtful & clear review of the movie Watcher without spoiling it, you are excellent!đâ„ïž I really want to watch this film, but as I've a low, fixed income & still pay a lot for Comcast cable, & several streaming services, I'll likely have to wait til it's rental price Reduces, as I did w/the movie Titane, which I just saw last week (& I relayed my thoughts about it below your review of Titane), as I believe It was now Free to watch, but I don't recall on what streaming service.
HaâŠwatching this right now! Cannot wait to hear what you have to sayđđ»âLove your channel â„ïž
I havenât watched it yet but it definitely sounds like a film I would enjoy. I like slow burners and psychological tension a lot, not that I would want *every* movie to be that way but like you said itâs almost a novelty in this day and age. Iâm pretty jaded to over the top VFX, gore, and jump scares so I will definitely give this one ago. And I know what itâs like being in Eastern Europe with almost no one to talk to! Been to loads of countries on my own and thereâs a definite excitement/trepidation two-sided coin thing going on there. Also, gotta see Maika đ„°. Thanks for letting us hang out with you, Emma. It was fun as always! Please give your greyhound (ugh..Iâm drawing a blank on his name!!!) a good scratch around the ears for me and tell him heâs a Good Boy. Until next time đđŒ
Great recommendation! I watched this last night on Shudder after I saw your top ten films of 2022. This was amazing. Some minor questions in the plot. But overall this was great. Iâll definitely revisit again this week. âïžâïžâïžâïž
ohmygod i can't wait to watch this. it has been on my to-watch-list forever!
Maika Monroe is THE reigning SCREAM QUEEN. Yet she is still underrated even though sheâs been running horror for over a decade now.
Awesome, thanks for reviewing this one. I didnât know much about it! I was expecting your Instagram live energy in this vid but it was poem free! đđ
Haha does it blow youâre mind i filmed this right after that
@@spookyastronauts đđđ
This was so good! A definite slow-burn but the last 15 minutes was pretty wild. đđŒđżđ„
I LOVED IT!!!!! Very subtle and all too realistic.
I loved this movie. It totally creeped me out and I felt like the Hitchcockian elements were used really well, which isn't always the case. The slow pace also reminded me of some 70s trhillers/mysteries. It's not mindblowing or super original, but for me it worked and did what I wanted it to do. 8/10.
Perfect timing! Im about to watch this tonite and I will revisit your review! đ
Edit: Just watched it, and I give it a solid 7/10. Good building of suspense, beautiful cinematography, a little bit predictable, but I don't know if that's a flaw.
Also, Storm drain was totally my favorite segment of V/H/S/94
"very slow paced" I am all set - thanks for the review.
Wonderful review! So late to the party as it's just dropped on Netflix. The slow burn psychological thriller is my favourite genre and it's great to hear others talk about it. Also, the industry word you're looking for is "Hitchcockian". It's a term.
I stumbled across this movie after seeing my favorite British actor of the week (joke) Burn Gorman was in it, coming from someone who's used to him playing roles like Owen Harper in Torchwood and Hermann in Pacific Rim, creeped me out the most along with the slow build ups and the feeling of being a fish out of water with the main character. Genuinely was on edge for the entire movie and use of no subtitles but getting a general understanding of whats going on when people around her were speaking Romanian helped a lot. I didn't set a bar too high or low for this movie but it knocked out whatever bar I had for it if I did. Burn's deep voice and his not natural accent sold the last half for me and I wonder why he doesn't have any voice work roles that arent a dead MMO under his belt when he can convey such great work. It's for sure gonna be a rewatched movie in the future
I really think the pacing reflects her slow descent into "madness" in her husband's and neighbors eyes but also the gradual effects of isolation
Spoiler!!!!
There have been so many crazy reveals in other movies, like "the killer is actually someone completely unexpected" or
"or was all in her head" that no crazy reveal feels quite fresh.
It was actually pretty decent. I really enjoyed it. But my fav horror movie of the summer is you wont be alone. I didnât know I needed a movie like that. Blew my mind
I gave it 5 stars and a heart on my Letterboxd upon leaving the theater and my lil review was as follows lol
Now THIS was a good night at the movies!
This must have been what it felt like to see a
Hitchcock movie in the theater when it came out.
What a perfect ending shot.
Maika, I need you on my screen more often.
*This isn't a negative but just a funny problem I personally had during the film, I kept getting distracted whenever her man was onscreen and just reliving his [face] from Gaspar Noe's "Love"
Looks like a good movie, definitely putting this on my watch list. Thanks for the review! đđ»đđ»đđ
This is a psychological horror masterpiece!
Brilliant film. I started questioning if she was a reliable narrator. Messed with my head didn't know if she was imagining it or not
Thank you emma. i will watch today.
I love Maika Monroe !!! Sheâs also been in It Follows and Greta⊠just to name a few .. I think she is very under rated and Iâm glad that she had a chance to shine in this movie.. â„ïž
the guest
Awe Grommet! Honestly heâs my fave!
I have been waiting for this one for a while....can't wait.
Thatâs crazy I literally just finished this film and I look up and you uploaded your review lol. I loved everything about this film though the character made some questionable choices. Other than that itâs the type of psychological horror that I love to watch. I didnât really enjoy âWoman in the Windowâ but this kept me glued to the screen.

oh gosh are you me? because I've just watched it too haha! :)
@@marianar2948 crazy right lol
Hail Raatma!!!
Been excited for this movie, since Hail Raatma segment in VHS94.
Not many horror films can really get me scare-wise, but for whatever reason the last 5 to 10 minutes⊠Led by that shocking moment⊠Super tense!
I like thriller-type movies more, so I'm definitely going to check this one out!
I loved this movie, I honestly never recognized it as a slow-burn while watching it because I was continuously engaged with the slow building of tension throughout, and it's held all throughout up until the very end. *spoilers* I absolutely hated the husband Francis and how he discredited and doubted her. It's also interesting that the only person that got her and understood her was another woman, Irina, and the moment Julia couldn't find Irina was a tipping point, because now she was completely and utterly alone. I also think it says a lot how the creep utilized the police, structures that doubted Julia when she was in fear.
I was lucky to see this at Panic Fest in Kansas City. It was definitely in my top 10 favorite films I saw at the festival. Not exactly original but the execution and the acting were spot on
I got to check it out thanks Emma đŻđ
I just saw the film last night. Super good. I really enjoyed it. Great suspense and tension throughout. Plus, shout out to Maika Monroe. She was fantastic. I was never a big fan of hers before, though I always appreciated her film choices. This movie made me a believer in her. She was wonderful in it.
I though this movie was great, it definitely slow and it's not for everyone just because of the slow-pacing, but man this was one of the most intriguing movies i've seen this year and Maika Monroe and Karl Glusman were fantastic in the lead roles. It was also such a well made, well shot movie, my grade for Watcher is an A-
Agreed. Huge Rosemary's Baby vibes.
Sounds good. I'll give it a watch.
Just saw it.. reminded me of The Assistant, which I also loved.
Just finished this movie. It wasnât crazy and loud but it was fantastic. Hitchcock is definitely a great comparison.
đŻ
Good thriller, nice change of pace. It's slow with a purpose, 7/10 to me
My co-worker is Romanian so I will get her feedback!
This movie was so effective - I was enraged. Such a good representation of how women are constantly told to undermine their intuition.
A lot of reviewers feels so eager to spoil... I appreciate the subtlety.
This film was great - just left the cinema. Maika was absolutely amazing, the cinematography was stunning and the setting added so much. The scene on the train platform and in the carriage with the bag - outstanding
i loved it !
As a Romanian, I was very excited to see a horror movie filmed in good old Bucharest featuring Maika and Murphy from Love. I am also a big fan of slow burners and Rear Window type scenarios.
Unfortunately, this movie left me feeling rather uninspired and bored. The tension never built up and the story and characters were underwritten and underdeveloped. I kept waiting on Maikaâs backstory into why she has ptsd as I felt she acted like a victim from the beginning. I kept waiting for a plot twist to happen, but nothing ever did. It was very bland and depressing.
I quite enjoyed the silhouette of Mr Weber from the window and from afar, and the « not revealing his face » until the very end. Maikaâs wardrobe and makeup were very classy and went well with the vintage architecture of Bucharest.
Understanding what was being said mightâve played against me here; I understood when the tv reporter said « a woman had been found butchered »; when the husband left out the « butchered » part, I thought for sure there is some past trauma here and heâs shielding her from it, as sheâs fragileâŠ.but nopeâŠno backstory. He believes sheâs just your typical hysterical woman I guess. Quite annoyed đ. Many things made little sense or just never built up to their full potential. Very disappointed. 5,5/10
Thanks for your comments! I skimmed a bit because I havenât seen it yet but it was very interesting to hear your perspective on it as a Romanian. Ozi buna iti doresc!
Most of the time, I watched your reviews first before watching the movie, so I was very intrigued by this film. I also gave it 7/10 because I felt this movie is missing something remarkable in order to give it a perfect score. I love Jules' character. She tries to survive to that sociopath by her own which is admirable because she was alone. I hate her husband, so selfish thinking about himself and his work. He didnât care about his wife at all pretending she was imaging everything. The watcher obviously is frustrated with his life. He has to take care about his old father which is something that bothers him a lot. It took me by surprise the end because I was 100% sure Jules would not make it, however, there is a clue when she is crawling on the floor she sees the drawer where Irina's gun is kept.
Canât wait to see it.
I love a slow burn rear window is one of my favorite movies but I do think we shouldâve had more scenes where we felt like maybe sheâs right when she feels watched I feel like we shouldâve thought we where paranoid with her more I think I imagine that couldâve been resolved in about 20 more mins(like the Romanian not being translated was perfect to feel out of place like her as a American)& more of a score to build tension the 6/10 for me with my first watch
Hi Emma! I liked the performances... She, her neighbor, the neighbor's boyfriend, the psycho killer... And like the director, he used laconic colors to generate a feeling of abandonment, of loneliness...
I think you'll like it, more *The black phone*.
Emma, quick question, I enjoyed this film a lot and I hear lots of people comparing it to Hitchcock.. I've never seen any Hitchcock! Which films would you recommend?
that subway scene. wow. director did a lot with a little (that little was good IMO too)
Good video , I'll watch the movie đđđ
đexcellent
This is a solid movie. Good one.
Bucharest is where i was born and this movie sounds interesting đ€ I might watch it đ
Ooo enjoy! It looks beautiful tbh made me want to visit
I just finished this movie and it was okay đ
I just finished watching the movie. To be honest, I'm Romanian and I didn't really get the feeling of isolation since I could understand everything that was going on. I do have to say that Karl Glusman spoke pretty good Romanian for this role. Most of the time when they make actors try to speak it I can't understand a word. If I have to be picky they only made one mistake to tie it in to the opening scene. When they first get to their apartment the girl tries to say the apartment is "frumoasa" and the caretaker doesn't correct her despite the fact that it's the wrong declination. Apartment is a masculine noun in Ro, the right for would be "frumos" but I understand that they wanted to tie it to the taxi ride. The set design (?) Is also pretty good. There's a scene where Karl's character gives the gf a flower telling her it's to signal spring. That's spot on, that flower in Ro is considered as announcing springs beginning. Also, the TV station playing is a real TV station. Honestly, I thought the killer was someone else since the building administration was speaking a bit weird when she let them in the apartment but I think that might have just been the script.
I was going to give it a pass when i first herd of the film, But after watching your review i am a bit more interested in it. A pallet cleanser sounds great! after some recent releases. Another great review. Thanks Emma
Enjoy!
good slow burn thriller and maika monroe is great
Hmm Iâm scared to watch this one; I have a theory to what the jump is going to be and itâs like my biggest fear; being watched without knowing youâre being watched⊠Iâm gonna rent it for sure, just nervous haha
I was pleasantly surprised by this movie.
